FPL new signings: Who is West Ham forward Gianluca Scamacca?

West Ham United followed up their summer signings of centre-back Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m), midfielder Flynn Downes (£4.5m) and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) by splashing out on Italy forward Gianluca Scamacca (£7.0m).

The 23-year-old arrives from Sassuolo for a fee of around £30.5m and will hope to succeed where other Hammers forwards have not in recent years.

None have arrived to ease the burden on Michail Antonio (£7.5m) since 2019, such were the disappointments of Sebastien Haller, Javier Hernandez and Simone Zaza.

So, where does the Italy international fit in at David Moyes’ side and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Born in Rome, Scamacca totalled six years in the academies of Lazio and Roma before making a surprise move to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven at the age of 16.

With Holland being a proven breeding ground for many years, the plan was for the youngster to break into the PSV line-up and use it as a stepping stone for a bigger move.

2019/20Ascoli (loan)Serie B3391
2018/19PEC Zwolle (loan)Eredivisie800
2017/18Cremonese (loan)Serie B1410

He was quickly back in Italy though, signing for Sassuolo in January 2017, a side who themselves have mastered the transfer market over recent years and provided ready-made talent for Serie A’s biggest outfits.

Loan spells at Cremonese, PEC Zwolle and Ascoli led to his first full top-flight campaign at Genoa in 2020/21.

Netting in the derby against Sampdoria certainly didn’t hurt his popularity, going on to score seven more times before being deemed ready for a run as Sassuolo’s focal point.

It was a wise decision, with Scamacca scoring 16 times and doing enough to earn his first seven caps for Italy.

PLAYING STYLE

At a height of 6ft 5in, FPL managers are right in assuming that Scamacca is good in the air. WhoScored directly refers to aerial duels as one of his best attributes, with regular comparisons back home to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Yet last season’s 16 league goals showcased many types of finishes, including tap-ins, long-range strikes, direct free-kicks, headers and one penalty.

Right-footed, his expected goals (xG) total of just 10.8 can either be interpreted as a campaign of overachievement or prolific finishing. With this being the first season in which he has ever exceeded 10 goals in a single campaign, there may be a degree of scepticism.

Amongst the ‘big five’ leagues, only four players scored at least 15 goals whilst also missing no more than five big chances – Erling Haaland (£11.6m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Domenico Berardi and Scamacca.

WHERE SCAMACCA FITS IN AT WEST HAM

FPL managers will certainly be interested in seeing if Scamacca links up well with the crosses of Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m). The left-back already has the giant Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) to aim set-pieces at but, using stats from our Members Area, we see he is one the most regular crossers amongst all defenders.

Two seasons ago, Cresswell assisted 11 times and perhaps the addition of Scamacca will benefit the prospects of both.

Over a fifth of Scamacca’s efforts were headers last season, including three of his 16 goals.

Above: Total crosses made by defenders in both 2020/21 (left) and 2021/22 (right)

Scamacca was limited to a cameo appearance in Gameweek 1, with Moyes stating he is “a little bit behind” due to the transfer’s interference with pre-season. He still found time to force a good save from Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), although the header would’ve been ruled out for offside.

However, it seems that Scamacca will initially be sharing minutes with Antonio – which immediately dents the FPL prospects for both.

“I see his link-up play and his build-up play are very impressive. He’s 23 at the moment and that’s young for someone to come into the Premier League, so I’m looking and will have to give him time. We’re not going to push him on too hard, too quick, because we want to bring him on and we want to get him right and then bring him in when we feel he will be ready to show his qualities.” – David Moyes

IS SCAMACCA WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

It’s very much a wait-and-see situation with the forward on the back of Moyes’s comments.

Our Season Ticker does say that West Ham have the second-best fixture run between Gameweeks 2 and 11.

But although they coped well with last season’s congested schedule, it’s worth mentioning that qualifying for the Europa Conference League group stage would bring another long period of midweek matches.

From Gameweek 2 until players are released for the World Cup in November, each midweek will have either a league, Europa Conference League or EFL Cup match. There is also an international break to factor in September.

Should Scamacca become the Hammers’ clear first-choice forward and hit some great form, his £7.0m price sits well amongst the likes of Ivan Toney (£7.0m), Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) and Callum Wilson (£7.0m).

Aaronson - probably should have gotten a return at the weekend, and plays attacking midfield for one of the most adventurous sides in the league, plus great fixtures.

FPL BlackBox / Social Media and Mark's rant - my take

TL;DR - Mark is a hero. Az is a great guy. Twitter is a cesspit. FF Scout is still a great forum full of insight, fun and, yes, tripe.

The reason I tune into BlackBox week in week out is for the chat and banter and friendly joshing and rivalry. F*kc the ranks and the criticism, MArk & az have created something that manages to touch upon the old skool style of the original Mark & granville chats from way back when. That is genuinely golddust. They could both be 3 million rank at Xmas and I guarantee they will get an audience. This is my main point - you've got FPL fans and you've got FPL (insert twitter handle) fanboys desperate to be told how to play the game

It genuinely makes me sad that someone as clearly intelligent Mark is getting dragged into the "should i mute" rubbish becuase Twitter is bringing him down. Absolute utter cesspit. Never had a Twitter log in never will. For every genius FPL Twitter such as Marcin and the memes you have 999 rubbish bins

I didn't have Haaland, I got 59pts... and I;ve Wildcarded. Caveat is that my record is actually half decent over the years and I've done that GW2 pretty much last 6-7 seasons.. felt like with the 3rd wildcard it was too easy this time even though I'll probably only actually do 5-6 changes.

Rant over. Roll on GW2. Good luck all 🙂

I like his point that going different from template and optimal team is a lose lose. If it goes through it's "variance" and if it goes wrong it's "I told you so", "that's now how you should play".

Low risk, low reward teams just get you so far. Mark is always aiming for an exceptional, and he knows that he can't beat other managers by having the same players. So he went aggressively straight from the off, it didn't pay off immediately, but we'll see what season brings.

Got a dilemma - had initially decided on sticking with Kane (alongside Haaland and Jesus) for his Wolves / Nottingham Forest fixtures mainly, and holding off on a Darwin switch (even though I much prefer his next fixture).

However, I can envisage various players that will need upgrading e.g. Bailey / Walker such that will need extra funds very soon..

Would it be better to just switch Kane to Darwin now to free up cash and avoid price changes? Or should I commit to Kane?

    1. InsertPunHere
      • 1 Year
      1 year, 9 months ago

Yes. Those prices are only going in one direction, and there’s a decent chance they could return similarly + the gains made through the extra money. I got on the Haaland switch before the rises, so I’m very happy indeed.

Doubt he'll be the same price as Raph last season and 1m more than Aaronson. I think Aaronson was on the right, but he could switch to the left at the expense of Harrison. I didn't watch the game so I don't really know who was where

Aaronsson looks tailor made for how Marsch wants to play and can play 10 behind Bamford so I suspect if Sarr signs Rodrigo might be most at risk. There is Sinisterra when fit too so rotation might be a factor.

He’s a great player, could be worth a pop at £4.5 in the short-term, but the wingback rotation situation remains unsettled, especially given we haven’t hit CL yet. I still think the first choice wingbacks will end up being Perisic and Doherty, but I might be wrong. Although I think Perisic will start against Chelsea because of his experience in big games and better understanding of the Conte system.

Perisic is the elephant in the room otherwise he’s in everyone’s team

You could pick Sess as your 12th man & guess when the rotation might occur & put him in your 11 then but it’s a lottery

I agree. In the old days, there were more solid contributions that became decent hot topics. Though I wouldn't say they ran the show. The quality of the vast majority of posts was still low, mostly RTMs and A/Bs, and there was still plenty of bullying-type behavior too. A minority of more avid contributors gave false hope, along with words from FFS staff, of a new dawn that never came.

A decent start with the team below, albeit I had Mitro, KDH & Sessegnon on the bench and captained TAA.

I gave to admit, I put Bailey in as a £5m mid based on the amount of teams I saw here last week and don't know too much about him. Is he a temporary selection or is he a good long term player? - or should I look to swap him out soon?

1 ft, gtg or swap anyone?

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Walker, Zinchenko, Trippier
    Salah (v), Martinelli, Kulu
    Haaland (c), Darwin, Mitro

    Ward, Bailey, Sessegnon, KDH

Yeah hands down, had this discussion the other day with a few in here. Just messed up royally on captain choice and benching...only accumulated 88pts and not even in top 20k - although on paper you'd think it's too 10!

Yeah liking Aaronson...just not sure how I can fit him in...£0.0m in bank and need an extra £0.5m if I swap Bailey for him.

Guess I could look to swap Zin for Saiba - both prefer the idea of Zin long term.

Not checked price rises/drops but would you...
Perisic > Walker ? (already have Cancelo)
Will Perisic drop to 5.4m? Will Walker rise to 5.1m?

If i do it now i can bank 0.5m to save for Perisic in a few weeks once his fitness improves + MCI have nice fixtures.

    Thanks.

Doesn't really matter because of the unlimited transfers in GW16. The fixture swing that'll happen in GW9 has bad fixtures for Liverpool and City. Will u really get rid of players from the 2 best teams? So anytime people see a point they can jump onto a better point potential team then u should hit the Wildcard. Even if its at most 4 transfers since we all have players from the top teams that we won't want to get rid of.

I missed the Haaland 0.1 , and now have to take a hitt to do Kane > Haaland..

Would you downgrade Mount or Bailey? Both starters..

    If Mount then for 7.8
    A) JWP
    B) Harrison
    C) Zancho
    D) Zaha
    E) Grealish

    If Bailey then for 4.8???
