FPL Gameweek 2 differentials: Brighton’s fixtures boost Trossard’s appeal

Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is fast approaching, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Brighton and Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of five per cent or less at the time of writing.

LEANDRO TROSSARD

Another assist for Salah as Brighton and Southampton prepare for favourable schedules 5
  • FPL ownership: 2.3%
  • Price: £6.5m
  • GW2-6 fixtures: NEW| whu | LEE | ful | LEI

Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) has featured as a winger, wide midfielder, number 10 and false nine under Graham Potter in the past 12 months, but has been lining up as a wing-back of late.

That kind of ‘reverse out-of-position’ tag isn’t usually one welcomed by Fantasy managers, but it does seem to be getting the best out of the 27-year-old: the Belgian international delivered seven attacking returns (four goals, three assists) in his final six appearances last season and netted a hat-trick in the recent friendly win over Espanyol.

It’s also worth noting that his actual position on the pitch is extremely high. For example, in last weekend’s 2-1 victory at Manchester United, only Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) and Pascal Gross (£5.5m) took up a more advanced average position. In that match, Trossard was also heavily involved in both goals and almost scored himself within 60 seconds after pressing Diogo Dalot (£4.5m).

Brighton and Hove Albion are now about to embark on a very kind run of fixtures, as they face only one of last season’s top 10 in their next seven matches. Notably, that also includes appealing games against newly-promoted Fulham and Bournemouth.

Graham Potter likes his players to be versatile and Trossard certainly fits the bill. Now, given his schedule, he could be a nice differential pickup in the mid-price midfielder bracket.

BRENNAN JOHNSON

Assessing Brennan Johnson and Nottm Forest's attacking assets ahead of FPL return 4
  • FPL ownership: 1.9%
  • Price: £6.0m
  • GW2-6 fixtures: WHU | eve | TOT | mci | BOU

Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) was excellent for Nottingham Forest last season, netting 18 goals and producing 10 assists.

As a result, he was named the Championship’s young player of the year, with his partnership with Djed Spence (£4.5m) down the right flank one of his team’s biggest attacking weapons.

Now, Johnson will hope to replicate that understanding with Neco Williams (£4.0m), as Forest return to the City Ground against West Ham United in Gameweek 2.

At Newcastle United last weekend, Forest struggled for large periods but did look better after bringing Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m) on for Sam Surridge (£5.0m), a switch which meant Johnson wasn’t so isolated in the final third. Indeed, they enjoyed their best spell of possession shortly after.

Steve Cooper named six new players in his starting XI in Gameweek 1, including Jesse Lingard (£6.0m), and the hope is now that with an additional week of training, they can improve against a West Ham side who only had one fit centre-back against Manchester City.

On penalties and heavily involved in set-pieces last season, the next challenge for Brennan Johnson is to establish himself as a goalscoring forward in the top-flight, something his counter-attacking attributes and finishing ability should enable him to do.

JACK HARRISON

  • FPL ownership: 1.2%
  • Price: £6.0m
  • GW2-6 fixtures: sou | CHE | bha | EVE | bre

Jack Harrison (£6.0m) performed well in the opening day win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and could be one to step up in the absence of Raphinha.

The winger played the full 90 minutes as Leeds United came from behind to beat Bruno Lage’s side, as he supplied an assist and posted team-leading totals for created chances (six), big chances created (two), successful crosses (four), final-third touches (31) and take ons (four).

Notably, he also took on a share of set-pieces with team-mate Brenden Aaronson (£5.5m), another appealing differential to emerge from Gameweek 1.

However, Harrison’s form has been good for a while now. In fact, from Gameweek 28 onwards in 2021/22 – Jesse Marsch’s first match in charge – he managed four goals and was unfortunate not to provide an assist, given his -1.24 expected assist (xA) delta.

Leeds now take on a Southampton side looking to respond to a 4-1 thrashing at Tottenham Hotspur, but the pressure is on, given that they struggled at home towards the back end of last season, losing five of their last six St Mary’s clashes whilst conceding 14 goals. Other appealing fixtures against Everton, Brentford and Nottingham Forest follow prior to Gameweek 8, and as a result, it’s no surprise they sit fourth on our Season Ticker in that period.

Jack Harrison sits in just 1.2 per cent of squads at the time of writing and is a tempting differential given Leeds’ schedule.

Locked in, what do you think?

    Meslier
    TAA - Walker - Trippier
    KDB - Saka - Kulu - Martinelli
    Haaland - Darwin - Mitrovic

    Ward - Saliba - Andreas - Patterson

The plan is KDB to Son for GW3

Him and Gross are on my watchlist and along with Damsgaard at Brentford, could all be good options when it's time to replace Neto/Bailey/Rashford.

Some games Trossard looked very good last season and could be a good low price option. Encouraging how far advanced both Trossard and Gross were against Utd

I'm probably one of the few people that punted on Trossard at one point last season and didn't get burned by him (it was when he was playing as a false 9 for a time, think he got a 10 pointer against Newcastle?) yet I'm still always wary of going with him. Very talented player in a solid side but I feel like I'm never very sure where he's going to play or what sort of a role he's going to have from week to week.

Potter is a master tactician, which is kinda bad news for us. He changes formations between and even during matches, so you never know quite what you're going to get with a Trossard or a Gross.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

Yeah it's why I'd be very hesitant on Gross, he doesn't hit the heights of seasons gone by of a lot of attacking returns. That being said, with Cucurella gone and no Dan Burn there I do think there's a chance he plays at LWB again and regularly so let's see. Trossard just feels like the type of player that can end up from anywhere between CM up to CF on any day

RMT thinking for -4 to bring highland in for Kane.

    Ward
    Taa Cancelo Dias Mings
    Salah Martinelli Bailey
    Vardy Jesus Kane

Bench:- Iversen, Andreas, N Williams, Neto

    Thinkinog -4 as below:-

Neto , Kane out and Dasilva, Halaand in?
    Good to go guys?

I have Dasilva but unsure on bringing him in, he's probably in a group of 4 or 5 challenging for 2 spots currently. I think you need to move out Mings as he's out of favour now, Bailey is possibly a rotation risk at the minute going by what some are saying and Martinelli might miss the odd game with ESR back fit and a small possibility of Nketiah playing at LW

Damsgaard has just signed, and I'm not sure how that impacts on DaSilva. Could knock him down the pecking order a bit, or maybe Wissa. I'd definitely want to see how Brentford set up in the next couple of games, with Damsgaard before committing to anything.

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years

He's mostly played LW but with KLP and Wissa there I'm not sure that's where Frank will want Damsgaard. The Athletic think he'll play him in a central role to try to replace Eriksen's creativity there but in a very different manner given his style of play. It seems like Frank wanted Jensen to be the main creative focus before Dansgaard signed but 0g1a all last season and Dasilva having a decent preseason and then changing the game last week must mean he'll be rethinking that. I've seen a lot of Brentford fans saying Jensen isn't good enough to do it, but similarly that, if Damsgaard was to play in a central / CAM role, Dasilva will need to improve his defensive work if he's to take up that place. Not sure if Janelt is likely to be dropped, Baptiste in there too.

Keeping an eye on Damsgaard too, has huge potential, really it's just the worry over his condition, although it sounds like the issue was that it was undiagnosed for a long while, and now he's on the right medication for it he seems fine. Could be an enormous steal at 5.5

Planning to get an 8.0m mid in next week, and then a 7.0 defender the week after. Which combo below to you prefer?

Glad Harrison is listed as a differential and not my pick, Aaronson. Still 1% owned - I think he'll be the stand-out sub 6m midfield pick in the near future, and cheaper than Harrison, Rodrigo and Bamford.

Salah - Martinelli - Aaronson: I'm more than happy with that midfield.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I didn't know Aaronson was on some setpieces until this article so it's good to hear, was so disappointed at the goal being taken off him last week having happened to be on here at the time it happened but seems like it was the right call. Both him and Harrison look like solid options, I did Kane to Nunez this week but even with the money itb allowing me to move Aaronson to an 8m mid, I'm much happier keeping him from what I've seen

Heh, selfishly I was glad the goal was taken off him as he was my first bench with Bailey playing. This week he starts for me. But if he'd got the benefit of a toenail, I'd have missed out on a return and likely his ownership would have risen tenfold!

Disagree. In general, that logic doesn't make sense. Every week you're trying to pick the best options. If 12 players have good fixtures, one has to miss out. It's not bad to pick someone with good fixtures who you don't play.

Happy with my team for GK 2 and was going to roll a transfer.

Next week planning on removing Tripper because of more difficult fixtures ahead (depending how he/Newcastle do this week), do I just do it this week instead?

    A) Keep Trippier
    B) Bring in Walker
    C) Bring in someone else for 5m or under

If you're determined to get one of them now, I'd say Trossard is worth the extra, based on past performances. For me, it's too early to really know.

Did WC after first round, but it usually backfires really fast. But since you are probably already on it, I'm not sure about Bruno and Diaz. Walker to Cancelo, Saliba to James, Bruno to Kulu/Sancho (if you really need ManU), Sanchez to Ramsdale and work Diaz as needed.

Is it too early to make the call to switch Salah to Nunez, rely on perma cap Haaland, and spread the funds?
(Feels like this could be a season defining change)

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

Very early. Salah picked up 12pts last week in a game where the whole team was very poor and where he didn't do very much. There are 36GWs left after this weekend, plenty of time left, don't do anything rash now. It's not impossible to have both either with Nunez' decent price point. I moved Kane to him this week so I have him + Salah and TAA and have Haaland as well so it's very doable.

Hmmm, maybe I'll wait one more gw before deciding.
Agree it's risky, but I feel like with the template being so strong (and my te being very template) this might be the season defining move to get ahead early doors. (It also might backfire extraordinarily!)

If it's what you want to do and you're decided then go for it, I'm definitely not someone that wants to discourage someone for going with a different approach to the template (as someone that captained Elyounoussi at one point last season!), I just worry if you want Salah back he'll be quite awkward to get to, especially as he may possibly rise soonish

Yeah. It's Def what I 'want' to do. I think the thing holding me back is that to do it 'properly' I'd need to WC. Using the WC this early doesnt sit well with me (esp as that closes off an easy route back to Salah). And there's nothing fundamentally wrong with my current team.

              I could get to this:

              Ramsdale, Ward
              TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Walker, James
              Kulu, Saka, Martinelli, (Andreas), (DaSilva)
              Haaland, Nunez, (Archer)
£2.3m ITB! (Perhaps spend a lickle more to bolster the bench)

Risky but could be the right call. I’m going without Salah, which arguably also was the right call in the spring of 21/22. He looked bad v Fulham compared to Darwin.

Yeah, I just wonder if the games changed this year with Darwin and Haaland becoming focal points for their respective attacks.
I guess it probably is just a bit early to tell.

Moving to Haaland and Nunez up top would also involve switching Jesus to Saka - another anti-template move. I'm happy with this as unlike D&H I think a bigger part of Jesus' role will be to create space for Arsenal wingers. I.e. Man C and Liv are moving towards target men, Arsenal are moving towards a 9 who creates opportunities for the wingers.

The thing is more or less everyone looked bad against Fulham, while Salah looked off-colour after AFCON and the returns simultaneously dried up. He still got the returns last week at least, and honestly I feel like for the most part I see more games where I don't think Salah looks particularly outstanding compared to one's where I think he does, yet the returns are nearly always the same

2 for me also. Marsch has announced that James will be on the bench so Rodrigo will start again if you want to punt on him instead. Would stay clear of Sinisterra for now

Aaronson is probably most likely to play most games given his versatility and he's a nice differential, have him in my normal FPL team. But Rodrigo is a favourite of Marsch too, I know Sinisterra has to come into the side but I don't think he wants to drop him

Which combo would you go for?

    1) Jesus + Aaronsen/Trossard
    2) Microsoft + Saka

I'm Judy not sure which Arsenal player I want. Felt like Jesus was very industrious and looked class. Saka wasn't involved till his fortunate assist, but thats one game.
