GAMEWEEK 2: KEY OBSERVATIONS AND NOTEWORTHY CHANGES

  • Neco Williams (£4.0m) was even more prominent at set plays for Nottingham Forest this week, not only taking a direct free-kick but all of his team’s six corners – from both sides of the pitch – against West Ham.

  • Having taken 13 corners in Gameweek 1, most of them awful, Reece James (£6.0m) found himself uninvolved against Spurs. New signing Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) shared duties with Mason Mount (£8.0m) instead. James was actually barely involved at corner-kicks in 2021/22, taking only three this calendar year (before Gameweek 1), although was and is still prominent at indirect free-kick situations. One convincing argument for why he’s less involved at corners is his pace: Thomas Tuchel has previously highlighted how much James’s speed helps against swift opponents when playing at centre-half, so having him back to stop counter-attacks might be preferable.

  • Substitute Ivan Perisic (£5.4m) replaced Son Heung-min (£12.0m) in the second half of the clash at Stamford Bridge and immediately assumed the South Korean’s role at set plays, providing the corner for Harry Kane‘s (£11.4m) late leveller.

  • Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) has his feet under the door at Manchester United when it comes to free-kicks and corners, with compatriot Mathias Jensen (£5.0m) filling the void he left at Brentford.

  • Having not taken a single corner in Gameweek 1 when four of his teammates did, Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) was back on dead-ball duties against Bournemouth.

  • Two penalties were taken in Gameweek 2, both of them missed by Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) and Declan Rice (£5.0m). While the former remains on spot-kicks for Fulham after his manager’s backing, the identity of West Ham’s next penalty taker remains unknown: David Moyes talked up Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m), who was off the field when Rice missed from 12 yards, but Gianluca Scamacca (£7.0m) did take and score three across the previous two campaigns for Genoa and Sassuolo.

“Mitro knows that the next penalty will be there, the next penalty he will take, and the next penalty he will score. That is part of the game.

“Last week he had one and he scored, this afternoon he could be the moment for us to win the game, but okay, it’s part of our job.

“It’s part of Mitro’s job as well and we have to keep working with him. I will not miss, for sure, because I do not take penalties, but it’s part of the life of a football player. Next time he will score.” – Marco Silva

“Manuel Lanzini took the penalty kicks last year and scored them, it wasn’t Declan. We had Declan in mind today.

“No [Rice isn’t the designated taker this season]. That was one question, it doesn’t mean it will be the same all season. We will see, but Declan was the guy that was on the penalties today.” – David Moyes

Is Robertson worth the extra 1Mil over James? Might get rid as have no Chelsea cover in defence. Will see how Robertson is tonight and pull the trigger

Is Robertson your 3rd Liverpool asset? Id downgrade rob to one of the chelsea guys, and free the liverpool spot. I believe Díaz or Darwin will be essential sooner than later

I have Robbo, TAA, Bailey, but no Chelsea defender or Martinelli.

I'm going to take Robbo down to James or Cucu so i can afford Bailey to Martinelli, -4.

I am in the same position but Liverpool have United and Bournemouth coming up. I'm thinking to hold until GW5 and then switch to James or Cucurella. Might do it sooner if Liverpool defence looks ropey tonight.

    Meslier Ward
    Trent Cancelo Trippier Zinchenko Cash
    Salah Diaz Rashford Neto Andreas
    Haaland Jesus Plange

    0.3 itb

Think I will take my first hit this week...

Not keen on playing Trippier, but will have to if Cash is injured.
I want rid of Rashford (and maybe Diaz if he blanks again)

    Thoughts on this:

    Cash/Trippier --> Cucurella
    Rashford --> Martinelli

    -4

IF cucurella starts and IF he gets a CS, that gives you 6 points, minus the 4 pt hit = 2 points.

Trippier and cucu could give you between 1 and 6 points.

          Worst scenario:
          Trippier 6
          Cucú 1
          Result: -5 -4hit = -9 points

          Best scensrio
          Trippier 1
          Cucu 6
          Result: 5 -4hit = 1 point

Risking 9 points to get 1 at most is not worth imo

    Would you WC this team?

    DDG*
    Trippier Trent Cancelo Digne*
    Saka* Bailey* Salah Kulu

I think its the best week to WC if you have 3-4 issues to sort out.

A WC can really help you get ahead of the curve. Otherwise you take a -8/-12 which can also be taken later on.

I wouldn't and to be fair we'd all make some changes to our teams. You own a few of the main players and it's impossible to have all big hitters. I'd save WC for later for sure.

Looking to transfer Bailey for a similarly priced asset. I can't see him playing regularly in Gerrard's current system, so I thick a price drop is looming. Maximum I can currently afford is £5.5m. I've narrowed my options down to the following.

    1) Roll a transfer and see if he starts instead of the injured Coutinho.
    2) Eze
    3) Gordon
    4) Aronson
    5) Brentford midfielder.

All are underwhelming options, but I can't afford any more at the moment.

    Cheers.

In a similar position with Bailey. Only have 5.3 to replace him with and really don't like any options in that range. Will likely just bench for Neco this week and reassess next week.

What happened to West Ham? That game versus Forrest was horrendous. West Ham could have easily won that game, but they were really bad nevertheless. That first half was a disasterclass by West Ham.

Also, Scamacca needs to start games or West Ham need to buy another striker. Antonio is horrible. Absolutely dreadful player. Fatigue, overworked, no backup, there is no excuse anymore. Antonio is absolutely terrible.

Andreas is flagged. If he is on the bench for Fulham it could block points from Trippier.

It is City of course but Newcastle are at home and are much better defensively than last season. They are not the worst attacking side either.

Just my view but I would have Trippier 1st bench. He is still on set pieces vs City.

          He's done it.

Graeme Souness has addressed his ‘man’s game’ comments after the Chelsea/Tottenham match:
“We’ve got to be careful what we say today and I’ve not been very good at that, but we were becoming like other leagues. They were blowing the whistle all the time and it wasn’t a good watch. Our game has always been unique, more meaty, more in your face and more intense and we got away from that. My comments yesterday were saying we’ve got our game back. That is the kind of football I remember playing in.”

Have both Digne and Bailey in my squad with 1 free transfer. Thinking Digne-Gabriel and bench Bailey (hopefully transfer him out next week).

Big ManUtd protest planned at OT next week, never know if a group of them will try what they did last year and it ends up off. They know it's coming so you'd imagine the authorities and staff will be prepared to deal with it but never know.

Jesus is an excellent choice and has a great fixture. That being said I earmarked Nunez for this week looking at how bad ManUtd defend their box and the Brentford game just multiplied that

Walker boring but sensible...my problem with Walker was with Cancelo and Halaand he blocks potential for a second City attacker

I got Walker last week to pair up with Cancelo and Haaland.

Unless it's KDB, I don't think I'd trust any other City attacker to get regular starts.

I'll take the double defence points from the best defence in the league all day long if I can't have KDB and Haaland

I'm really struggling for ideas as to what to do with Neto - 2 FT, 0.5 ITB ?

    Ramsdale
TAA Cancelo James Trippier (N Williams)
    Salah Kulusevski Martinelli Neto (Andreas)
    Haaland Jesus ()

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated

With 2 FT and 0.5 you should have jumped on Rodrigo before his price rise. You had an additional ft in case of injuries.
Now your only option is to downgrade neto or trippier to create funds

Not seeing many looking at Maddison. Had decent returns first 2 and the fixtures look reasonable going forward. I know Leicester haven't been great defensively but they've looked decent in attack.

Just trying to pick the right time to hop on. Southampton at home is very appealing but the three away games (che/bha/tot) still a bit off-putting

I'm still wary of a move to Newcastle happening (which could mean him missing a game or two) so I'll wait until that's resolved. Not convinced by Leicester and while he's still of course reliable for points, feeling you can rely on a player's team to win games helps a decision to back them

Not too worried about Cancelo as Walker will cover for CS points. The differential 2M should make up for the other points lost.

TAA or no Pool defence is definitely a worry.

This is true. Even Robbo should outscore Toney.

Will need to relook. Probably getting biased due to the sea of greens for Toney. But the things in his favour are that he is on pens and looking quite fit.

Glazers won't sell their cash cow no matter how "nawty" you get.
Recovery takes time and patience. If you have to raise your voices then ask for some stability and to give ETH some time.

It's been long enough, when the commercial side fails they'll sell. It's up to fans to keep that pressure up

I have a lot of friends that are United fans and want some Saudi royal or Oligargh to come and pour money into United thinking it'll solve everything, but it won't.
Taking informal loans from a rich owner is risky. If Roman asked for his 1.5 billion back, Chelsea would have been bankrupt. City and Newcastle are headed that way.
At least United are indebted to banks and legit businesses. And the Glazers paying themselves hefty dividends means the club is making profits.
The Glazers are bad, but they won't go because of protests. Ask for things you can get.
Give ETH time and investments towards infrastructure.

Try being an Arsenal fan and having an owner like Kroenke. He has done what the Glazers did in half the time.
But still Arsenal are IMO headed in the right direction.
If you plan on being a fan 15 years from now, time shouldn't be a problem.

The arsenal model is what we need to follow, but the manager isn't being backed! They waste billions on commercial signings and go against managers wishes

                                I agree.
So ask for that, more time for the manager and more control over transfer for ETH.
Glazers won't leave no matter what. Unless someone offers upwards of 8 billion for the club.

United were in a strong position after 2020-21 season, but signing Ronaldo and the Greenwood controversy did derail their development.

Also I feel United players preferred playing behind closed doors where crowd pressure was less.

Going with Sterling, Rashford and Perisic and not owning James, Martinelli and Cancelo have been such a silly move for me.

Yet I feel like I should keep Sterling and Perisic for one more week. They both got and assist this GW. Thoughts?

Well I was actually going to play Dasilva this week and I have no other obvious issues with my team.

So its that or lose a FT \_O_/

Oh, well that's an even worse decision. DaSilva is likely to return 1 point most weeks - although there is a chance he starts the next game if Lewis-Potter and Damdgaard are both not ready. However, if they were both on the bench on Saturday, you'd have to give DaSilva a slim chance of starting. And then you're banking on him fluking a 0xG shot through a goalkeeper as hapless as de Gea.

Oh yeah there are so many great 4.5 - 5 players out there. What's your suggestion?

My suggestion? Go 442 and use your transfer of a keeper with an easy fixture. If you like Brentford's fixtures, get Raya.

Damsgaard didnt come on so I doubt he's ready, it's really just about who Frank prefers between Dasilva and the other usual few for this week I'd say.

5m was too much on the bench and there's a chance of price drop
PS: I made the move before Dasilva price rise

Think Andreas is a much better choice than Da Silva who has very poor underlying stats. Current form is nowhere near sustainable and think he will drop in price before getting another price rise.

That would block you from getting Salah completely...whatever about punting on no Salah, but No option for Salah seems mental...use your 2FTs to tidy it up IMO

I don't want him or see myself getting him in. Haaland is my set and forget captain until GW11 at the earliest bar injury. I have my Liverpool cover in Darwin, Trent & Robbo.

Even with the 2 FTs, not really sure what I'd tidy up, Son & Taylor to Kulu & Jesus?

Team without Jesus like mine. Feeling the pressure of Jesus ownership. If Darwin doesn't go mad tonight, I think I will hold my team for another week before buying Jesus. Get some more info before the WC.

-4? Chilwell would only really be sideways to James or Cucu or even Walker, Grealish would be a downgrade, might give me the funds but doubt it

I feel Mitrovic is still the best option. Wilson close second. The United game was an anomoly. I would wait another week if possible.

Mitro was definitely in my thoughts.

Tempted just to play Wilson against city. He’s involved in 50% of newcastles goals apparently. I see them sneaking a goal against city.

Normally we shouldn't fuss about our 5m mid much, but I guess deep down no one wants to sell Bailey due to his potential.
                            Hence the questions.

I didn't see the game but a mate of mine watched it with his Villa supporting dad, and both said he was superb when he came on so I can understand this

There are lots of uninspiring options. With Neco acting as a good enabler, you can get a ~5.5 option to rotate with him or just bring in fodder to upgrade elsewhere

How much faith would you have in any of those returning more than 2 points on a regular basis.

To be honest - and this is just my own flimsy opinion - I think if I picked a fresh side today I would go 5-3-2. There are so few attackers standing out to me right now compared to defenders. There's no comparison between a player like Trippier or Walker and a player like Almiron or Lallana in my book.

People want the choice that everyone else is going to go with. It's how we ended up with Bailey in the first place. I think I'm going with March.

                          Any thoughts? Looking at:

                          A) Iversen--> Sanchez (Requires to downgrade Rashford to Gross/Da Silva/Gordon)

                          B) Rashford --> Rodrigo

                          2 FTs

                          Ward (Iversen)
                          TAA Walker Cancelo James Perisic
                          Son Martinelli Diaz (Rashford, Andreas)
                          Jesus Haaland (4.5)

Hmm tough, probably A a C, although I'd go D over C if there was a sniff of him starting but it's probably unlikely

                              Best option short-medium term?

                              A. Rodrigo (6.1m)
                              B. Gross (5.6m)

A, really don't fancy Gross is an option at all
