FPL Gameweek 4 team news: Updates on Bamford, Maddison, Solanke and more

Four Premier League pre-match press conferences were held on Thursday as the countdown to Gameweek 4 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues.

We’ve got all the injury updates, team news and key manager quotes in this summary.

As well as the four managers speaking to the media today, 16 more will follow on Friday and we’ll be bringing you a round-up of those pressers in another piece tomorrow.

KEY UPDATES

LEEDS UNITED

Stuart Dallas (leg), Luke Ayling (knee) and Junior Firpo (knee) remain absent, while Jesse Marsch’s pre-match quotes seemed to suggest that Patrick Bamford (adductor) wouldn’t be ready for the trip to Brighton.

“Junior, Luke, we think that they will be in training next week. Stuart is still months away but working really hard.

“The big question mark is Patrick Bamford. We think he’s doing well and moving forward. I think also with the performances of the team, it allows us to be patient, but we will still have a call to make for exactly what it means for this weekend. We want to put him in the best position possible to physically be ready to pick up where he left off.” – Jesse Marsch

Rodrigo’s place up top looks settled for now with Bamford expected to miss out but Marsch did confirm that Leeds were active in the transfer market for another striker.

“Striker, yes. How likely it is… again it’s dependent on how things play out and what availability there is of players. We certainly don’t have big amounts of money to go out and spend and bring in a huge transfer. But I think we’ve done a good job of evaluating players that are of high interest to us.” – Jesse Marsch

LEICESTER CITY

James Maddison is a doubt for Leicester’s clash with Chelsea after feeling a “twinge” in training.

“We’ve got an issue around James Maddison. We’ll see how that is tomorrow (Friday). Hopefully he’ll be okay but that would be the only doubt. He just a felt a twinge yesterday when he was training so we’ll have to see what that looks like tomorrow.” – Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers also confirmed that Wesley Fofana wouldn’t be available for selection, as his protracted move to Stamford Bridge drags on for another week.

“He won’t be available for the weekend, he has trained with our under-23 squad.” – Brendan Rodgers on Wesley Fofana

SOUTHAMPTON

Tino Livramento (knee) is a long-term absentee but Romain Perraud (leg) has been back in training this week, with assessment to follow ahead of the weekend visit of Manchester United.

“Romain is back in training, this is good to see because he was out with groin problems and now today it looked good. He wasn’t ready for the cup game so we try to give him a good session on Tuesday.

“He trained today, trained good, and now we will see for the weekend if he is ready for this.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Romain Perraud

There were more questions about Che Adams‘ form and future, with Hasenhuttl confirming that the plan was for the striker to stay on the south coast.

“He’s good in the moment, he scores goals, he’s on fire.

“You need a game like this one [v Leicester in Gameweek 3], where you step in and score two goals, win the game. Suddenly everything looks nicer, easier, and you are full of self-confidence.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Che Adams

BOURNEMOUTH

Joe Rothwell (thigh), Ryan Fredericks (match fitness), Junior Stanislas (groin) and David Brooks (match fitness) are all still sidelined for the trip to Liverpool.

Dominic Solanke (ankle) will train on Friday, however, and could “be an option” in Gameweek 4.

“Dominic Solanke will train with us tomorrow for the first time, full training. So hopefully, if he comes through that can be an option for us at the weekend.” – Scott Parker

Jamal Lowe is also back in training after illness forced him to pull out of the Cherries’ starting XI in the EFL Cup clash at Norwich in midweek.

  6. Twisted Saltergater

Played my WC and I haven't a clue. I'll put my hands up. Want to offload Liverpool players but their next 4 are great.

Ideal time seems to be before GW9, so I'm going to have to come up with something creative to get the benefit before then.

Considering sticking to Threemium with Salah, KdB and a switch of Haaland to Kane, as I suspect Alvarez gets the Forest fixture. Problem is, that means losing Trent and keeping Walker - who also could be rotated :/

    Any pearls of wisdom?

      BOU, NEW, eve, WOL.

Only BOU is the game I would really want Liverpool players. Newcastle has been one of the most consistent teams in this calendar year. Merseyside derbies are never easy. I think Wolves look solid at the back -- not captaining any Pool players.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

Yes, largely agree. I'm ok not captaining Salah, which means he's not worth 13m. That said, he's nailed to play all those games if fit, where as I can see Haaland missing the Forest game, for example.

I can keep Salah and captain elsewhere but that feels like a missed opportunity.

        1. banskt
          • 10 Years

I agree that Haaland may miss the Forest game. One option is to buy Salah and Kane on, both of whom are nailed. Switch Salah to KDB after the BOU game. Watch a few more games and see how Pep uses Haaland before buying him.

However, personally I do not like the above strategy as it would be booking in future transfers. But, as always in FPL, to each his own. 🙂

I have a ton of money if only going with Salah and Kane, as it allows both TAA and Cancelo. If you compromise on those two and go say, Walker and Zinchenko, then along with Trippier and/or Perisic, you can squeeze in a 3rd premium.

            1. banskt
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 8 months ago

I bought Cancelo on WC last week (which was a mistake, see discussion below). I think Ederson / Walker are better picks from City defense, until Pep starts using Cancelo as a wing back again.

I had the same idea as yours. Instead of the third premium, I bought Sterling last week in my WC for his plum fixtures. However, that did not help. And Chelsea overall looks blunt in attack. You could keep some money in the bank and buy Darwin as soon as he is back to gain some early mover advantage.

              1. Twisted Saltergater
                • 14 Years
                1 year, 8 months ago

Are you keeping Sterling? I have a 9-10m spot available if I go with two captain options so Sterling or Darwin would be ideal. With the ideal WC timing, I'd know how Chelsea performed against Leicester - maybe one of those don't buy, don't sell if you own Sterling/Mount already.

I almost rage transferred him out. But, on second thought, it seems a waste of FT to sell him before Leicester. I will probably keep Sterling for Leicester and Southampton. Exit strategy is Darwin on GW6 if he still doesn't perform.

I’d be moving away from Threemium personally. Too many better value options (Rodrigo, Kulu, Toney, Perisic, Foden/Diaz, Martinelli and the expensive dfers) and you can’t really have Threemium and many of those players.
The great thing about Premiums is captaincy potential. But you can only captain one a week

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

I started with Salah, Haaland and Son, and that has cost me as it meant starting a 5m midfielder or going 5 at the back.

On a WC, I'm heavily leaning towards a midfield of:

        Salah - KdB - Martinelli - Rodrigo - Rashford

This allows Jesus up top and Toney (with a big defence) or Kane/Haaland with Walker, Saliba, Dunk, Trippier and Nico.

I could lose Salah but who is there to rely on elsewhere? Chelsea not stepping up and Son has been awful.

Trossard is a good shout. The way Brighton is playing, he will surely be involved in goals when used as AM. He could be good differential pick if (a big IF) there is regression in Rodrigo's point output.

Rodrigo has been too good to ignore over the past 3 weeks though.

Yeah I'm playing on differential card. Some great fixtures ahead, while Rodrigo is playing some defensively solid teams as both Brighton and Everton can defend well often.

But I'm afraid that going without another popular pick in Rodrigo as I'm without Salah can be painful.

And what will you do with James?

If Fofana arrives, they will still have problems in midfield. Jorginho and whoever plays next to him who isn't Kante or Kovacic is just not good defensive cover.

Can't see them getting more than 2-3 cs in the next 10 gws.

Yeah the problem is I WCed last gw and it was a gw too early. Now we have some clearer view. Cancelo isn't worth it as well as City's fbs play as defensive midfielders, they don't go wide.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

This. If no City defender has any real goal/creative threat, then Walker seems a better pick, or Ederson/Dias for assured starts.

Yes, Cancelo is playing as an inverted fullback this season, unlike his wingback role last season. I failed to see this before my GW3 WC as well. Mistake, but will be rectified soon-ish. At least, there will be clean sheet points and baps until the correction.

James in GW3 WC was not a bad call. Couldn't predict Koulibaly. I think I will hold James as I hope Chelsea will sort out their defense sooner than people expect. So, will Liverpool and therefore moving back to Trent will also become an option.

Spurs haven’t looked great so far. Would still think haaland gets 60 mins each game, enough to wreck havoc once he gets going

      Bamford isn't fit yet.

He's working back but it's misleading to say he's ready.

He could be on the bench but if closer he'd have featured yesterday.

    Hoping to get either one.

They're both really strong picks. I favour Rodrigo slightly as he's likely to be on pens with Bamford out, and plays in a more attacking team. Gross is still great value.

Rodrigo if you want him to play every week. Gross for a really strong first bench option with occasional rotations.

Looks great. Just be wary of GW5 with rotation. You may need to play Trippier at Anfield.

Is that Pontus Jansson of Brentford at CB? If so, you can definitely get away with that this week, and take advantage of Kane vs Forest.

I think I prefer Dunk and Raya, to Jansson and Snachez.

See I'm thanking Kane against forest is just goals galore maybe I'm wrong, but if I go with that team the chopping and changing it wud take for the weeks ahead to get the team that is team A

This Maddison injury doubt is really annoying, I was so close to doing Maddison to Rodrigo before Rodrigo's price rise.
Now I might have to do the same move without pocketing a price rise

If you don't have Salah, who would you captaining?

Diaz could be great differential as Bournemouth right side is conceding a lot of chances.

I also have Jesus, KDB and Haaland and that would also be the order of captaining in my opinion.

    1. Bobby Digital

I'm going Haaland... Jesus a possibility too.

Same here. I don't have Salah. Captaincy options are Jesus, KDB and Haaland.

I will captain Haaland, who is still waiting eagerly for his first home goal. Palace struggled against 10-men Liverpool, once they started playing better. Even earlier, Darwin missed some easy sitters.

      1. Dušan Citizen
        • 10 Years

But I have some theory that Haaland will do better in away matches and KDB in home ones.

At the Etihad, opponent's defenders will keep eye on Haaland all the time like Bournemouth did and that will leave more space for KDB to come closer and shot.

        1. banskt
          • 10 Years

Then you got it sorted -- so its either KDB or Jesus for you.

Based on their respective performance against Liverpool, I would say Palace is more open at the back than Fulham, and hence provides higher chance of scoring for your attackers.
