FPL and mental health: Why the game is a positive to me

We regularly get some excellent submissions to the Community Articles section of Fantasy Football Scout, from statistical analysis to Red Lightning’s mini-league round-ups and everything in between.

In the article below, site regular Notlob Legin hails the positive aspects of not just Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but also you, the Fantasy Football Scout community.

First of all, let me introduce myself.

My profile name is Notlob Legin and I’ve been playing FPL for nine seasons, with seven of my finishes in the top 100k and one in the top 10k. I have been a member of Fantasy Football Scout for six years and basically, I love football and in particular FPL. I am in my late-50s and live in the United Kingdom. I have two grown-up children and about five years ago, I “inherited” my other son; he has behavioural issues, goes to a specialist school and has had quite an impact on our lives. I would never change it, though, and have no regrets about our decision to take him on.

I work from home permanently now and due to my son’s issues we rarely go out and no-one ever visits us. We are therefore quite isolated; I’m not looking for sympathy here and overall, I am very happy with my life.

I have read many articles about how FPL can affect your mental health and last year I was part of a study into this, completing a form after every Gameweek had finished. To me, every article appears to be positioned towards how FPL can have a negative effect on your mental health – but I think in my case it’s the complete opposite!

My wife said to me a few years ago that my only hobby and real interest in life is FPL. A simple logical question she asked me was, “why don’t you spend more time on it as it’s your only interest?” This completely changed my mindset and view on the mental health issue.

I love FPL and this site. I spend hours on here every day and get great pleasure in making my own decisions. I have no guilt about my passion for the game. I, like everyone else, have good weeks and bad weeks. For example, I brought in Marcus Rashford (£6.6m) on my Gameweek 4 Wildcard. What a buzz that has given me over the past couple of weeks! I also make many bad/wrong decisions. Do I get down and upset about it? Not at all, I try to learn from it – to me, it’s all about having a positive mindset.

FPL review: Rashford's haul and Brighton's in-form midfielders

The times I get negative mental health issues are when the game is not on, such as the close season, the World Cup this year and in the aftermath of events this last week. To me, FPL is my escapism from normal life and I unashamedly say I love it.

I am no elite manager, average at best. But to me, FPL and Fantasy Football Scout are what keep me ticking. It has had such a positive impact on my life and I love the challenge of every year trying to improve on my overall rank. I also understand that most people are in a very different situation to me personally and that the game may impact you in different ways, But to me, it is, without doubt, the thing that keeps me going.

I wasn’t sure if this would get posted as it’s more a personal story/view about the game but if it does, I hope you enjoyed reading it and maybe, just maybe, if one person out there starts seeing the game as a positive rather than a negative, it was worth writing.

My last quick point is on the comments section on this site. I read almost every comment posted and overall, love the community. However, my grandad (a very wise man) always use to say to me:

There’s so much good in the worst of us
And so much bad in the best of us
That it ill betroves any of us
To criticise the rest of us

Good luck to all for the rest of the season.

Rival did not wc and needed to field Collins as 11th player because of that.

Thank you - I love St Pauli - watched them play a few years ago - great team and atmosphere there

        No worries Bolton Nige!

I was in Hamburg once when St Pauli were at home first game of the season, tried to get a ticket but no chance, completely sold out. Even sampling the atmosphere outside was great though.

Great post, mate. Glad you get so much joy from FPL.

Me, on the other hand, benched Rashford for his haul vs Arsenal after he limped off in the Thursday night game!

That's just unlucky mate. Having him at that point shows you know what you're doing (in my opinion)

Thank you. Variance, I guess. Picked him ahead of Southampton, Leicester and he only returned a single assist. Figured he might be benched for Ronaldo in the Arsenal game just 4 days later.

I’m doing terrible this year (sold Haaland on my WC before the CL fixtures and based on Pep’s rotation comments), but I’m glad that I’m still enjoying the game like you, with the weekly decisions.

Good luck with your season 🙂

      Didn't play it. I had 2 FTs.
With a bit of luck, the damage may not be too bad...

Lovely article, well written by someone who sounds like a lovely bloke.

I don’t post much if at all, but I do read a lot and spend a fair bit of time on here. I certainly agree with the sentiment that those who criticise others maybe need to take a look in the mirror and wonder why they do it. If you walked into a pub and spoke like some post on here, you would swiftly exit the building involuntarily.

      Thanks Dunster

I too rarely post, sometimes out of fear of criticism and also am always determined to make my own decisions,

In my opinion there are an awful lot of solid good people that read everything but don't get too involved. If I ever see you comment I'll make a point to reply constructively

Take care and thanks for your kind words

Never be afraid to post my friend!

There's no such thing as a silly question!

I'm only in my second proper season of playing properly and I love it!! However, I have had to reach out for help and advice before regarding the rules etc

        A good community all round

Rather assumed his name was Nigel, but I am a bit simple (always have been, that’s why i make stupid FPL decisions like triple captain Havertz)

There’s only been one ever gameweek when that might have been a wise idea.

Actually today is a really good example of this. I “ummed and arred” when selling Salah about KDB or a punt on Son. Went KDB in the end - bit of a safe pick.

Come Saturday afternoon. KDB done well. Son dropped to the bench. I am Mr Smug. Two hours later, what the ???

What can you do other than extend the hand of FPL friendship to those who backed Son and say, fair play, you lucky so and so, and smile…..

LOL - tough decision. I did the same (umming and arring) about Salah to Son - decided to keep Salah

Dropped from 460k to just over 1 million so far this week!!

I now look at it as a challenge - when things are going well everything seems easy - when things are not going so well that is (in my opinion) the true test - so now how do I get back all those lost points and rank? As of this morning I have no idea!!

I've still got 5 to play this week so it may not be too bad in the end. I really need a brace from Gordon to save my week - here's hoping

Mini poll. Best combination for next 3.
    A. Kane + Toney
    B. Son + Toney
    B. Son + Mitro
    C. Kane + Mitro

    Cheers mate! Great article.
I agree with this 100%. I always see the game in this way.
It gives us so much, not least abit of a laugh... we all love a digne own goal or a son red card

Personally I go for full involvement strategy and play multiple platforms simultaneously.. I for a peny in for a pound... sky, gaffr, fanteam, euro fantasy
      They can't all go bad.

So avoid the boredom mate when world cup comes. Embrace the madness of 7gw fantasy...
To be fair looking at some teams on euro fantasy.some people do really nail it of the short period

Late 50s? I thought I was the oldest person here. I'm 53, equally very happy of my life and quite far - it seems to me - to take Fantasy Football so seriously to endanger my mental health. That said, I vastly prefer to play "social" Fantasy Football games, such as the good old fantasyleague.com, where a community of friends monthly meet for a beer and some changes to their respective squads. I find it far less alienating and more funny, and I can't understand how this kind of game could rapidly collapsed from a monopoly condition (from 1991, when we started) to the present tiny group of die-hard aficionados. Cheers and all the best, Nigel, from Armando (Rome, Ity).

Hi Armando - Love the avatar image and your league name.

Old school is still the best for me - very jealous of your monthly meets and discussions. So wish I was in Rome - my favourite European City - so I could join you!!
