Assessing the best FPL players from Man Utd

Throughout the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, our team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors will be sharing their thoughts, tips and own transfer plans.

Only Premium Members are able to read every single one of these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

Here, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser assesses the Manchester United squad ahead of a favourable fixture swing.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

Not often in the last few years have I been asked to write specifically about Manchester United, which in itself is quite encouraging.

In the next three Gameweeks, the Red Devils face West Ham United at home followed by two trips to Aston Villa and Fulham.

It’s worth noting that both West Ham and Aston Villa have the best expected goals conceded (xGC) record over the last six matches. So, if opting for a United attacker, the expectation should be more ‘steady stream’ rather than an explosion of points. Their underlying attacking stats haven’t been great (ranking near the middle) but it is worth noting that a bad start was then followed by better results against tougher teams.

The last five games have been against Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, a selection of the league’s stingiest defences.

THE ATTACK

Gameweek 9 brought Antony‘s (£7.6m) first full game, so it’s worth looking at the data since then to identify trends as Erik ten Hag’s side has finally settled into a rhythm.

Let us look at goal threat first.

For more on Gameweek 14, my fellow Pro Pundit Zophar and I did a short comprehensive podcast where we discuss Liverpool, Arsenal and the short-term flings we like for the final pre-World Cup weeks. You can watch it below:

He's not even a negative defensive player, very un-Southgate like!

Not sure Doherty starts this one but 1 point is better than the inevitable 0 Guehi gets

    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier Doherty
    Salah Foden Saka Martinelli
    Haaland Toney Mitrovic

    (Iverson Andreas Guehi Patterson)
    1 FT & 0.7m

    A) Save FT
    B) Doherty to White

Could save FT but I only need to make 2 transfers before World Cup (sell Mitro in GW15 & Toney in GW16)
Will have 2 transfers for that if even I get White in for Doherty this week.
    Thoughts?

    a) James and Solanke to Tomiyasu & Jesus (-4) exact money
    b) James to Gabriel/White (for free); Would then play Doherty or Andreas

    Pope
    Trippier, Cancelo, Doherty (Zouma, James)
    Salah, Foden, Zaha, Martinelli (Andreas)
    Haaland, Mitro, Solanke

    Thanks all!

    Guaita (Iversen)
    Cancelo, TAA, Trippier, (Guehi, Williams)
    Salah, Foden, Zaha, Almiron (Andreas)
    Haaland, Toney, Mitro

    2FTs, 0.2 ITB

Tempted to burn a transfer deliberately for the first time ever but not sure what else to do besides Williams>Bueno to gain .1ITB

Downgrade TAA to a 3.9 maybe?

What about something completely different to what you are thinking of in Toney to Darwin and Trent to whoever to fund that move otherwise maybe one of Guiata/Guehi out

Just can't see who I'd get in for Guaita for these 3 games. Slim pickings

Don't like Guaita. I'd replace him. Regardless of the good fixtures Palace look vulnerable defensively.

I don't like Guaita much either after that last game, although he only conceded 5 in the previous 6. Who would you to get instead though? Kepa's looked great but those fixtures are nasty

Prefer Kepa over Guaita. Team quality matters more than fixtures when it comes to defenders imo.

I'd much rather have Chelsea, City, Newcastle defense with bad fixtures than a team like Palace, Leeds, Everton with good ones.

I'd generally agree but with a settled squad and 2FTs, I'm only thinking about the next game, and Guaita at home to Southampton for me is slightly better than Kepa away to Brighton. Writing my words down now, ready to chop and sprinkle them on my fish and chips at 5pm tomorrow. Could end up doing Haaland to Kane depending on the Pepresser

    Play

    1. Gomez
    2. Trippier

I get the feeling most people are going to go for 2, but don't think it's that clear cut. I benched Trippier last week and just don't feel like a cleansheet is happening and attacking prospects lower than the likelihood of a Liverpool cleansheet against and out of sorts Leeds.
