FPL notes – FA Cup: More Mahrez goals, Saka fitness latest

In this, the second of a two-part double-header, we round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the weekend’s FA Cup action.

Here, we focus on Arsenal, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Three FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 24 and beyond

PEP ON MAHREZ

Just days after coming off the bench to score the vital winner at Stamford Bridge, Man City winger Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) haunted Chelsea again by scoring twice in a 4-0 FA Cup victory.

A fine free-kick was later followed up by a successful spot

-kick, taking the Algerian up to six goals and two assists from his last seven outings.

Head coach Pep Guardiola loved the performance, saying his levels have gone up in recent weeks.

The quality from Riyad is everything. He loves to play football, helped us to play the game, he played really good and at 0-0 that can happen. He played an outstanding game playing wider. Good game.

“He never lost the love [for football]. But if Riyad is sitting here I would say to him: the way Riyad is training and playing right now – even when we were in Abu Dhabi when we trained for a few days – it was absolutely not the same. I was completely fair.

“When they play in this way and they complain, I can say ‘yeah, you are right, you deserve to play’. But before, he cannot play because he is not playing at the level he is playing now. Sometimes I have to let them see in their own mirror who they are.”

So could he be an alternative route into their Double Gameweek 20 midfield? FPL managers may not want to sacrifice Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) and the more explosive Mahrez is there for £5m less.

It’s a particularly bad time to be predicting Pep’s line-ups but it’s interesting to note that – since joining in 2018/19 – Mahrez has started all five trips to Spurs but none of the five at home.

Unfortunately, after Saturday’s Manchester derby, the champions will be hosting Spurs.

Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Kyle Walker (£4.8m) kept their places from Gameweek 19 and were much improved, boosting hopes for owners that they might have a significant part to play in the upcoming doubles.

SAKA “FINE”

The 20th and final Premier League team in FA Cup third-round action were Arsenal, who eventually saw off Oxford United 3-0 on Monday night.

A brace for Eddie Nketiah (£6.5m) kept up his fine record in the absence of Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m), with Gabriel Martinelli assisting the forward’s second strike.

“He showed great composure. He is a great finisher and the timing of his runs as well. The decision making to wait to the last moment shows his quality. It’s not only that – his understanding, his work rate I think is getting better and better. And I’m really happy with him.

“The problem is we have only one! And to go for that many months til Jesus is back is not easy. But we have to get the most out of the players that we have at the moment and if we can have some reinforcements – great.” – Mikel Arteta on Eddie Nketiah

Of note to Martinelli was the first appearance in months for the fit-again Emile Smith Rowe (£5.6m), who was the Brazilian’s positional rival for much of 2021/22.

“It’s good. It’s been four months since he played so I think it was a perfect game to give him some minutes, to get off the blocks and now he needs to start to get available and start to play at the highest level because we’re going to need him.” – Mikel Arteta on Emile Smith Rowe

There was a scare for owners of Bukayo Saka (£8.1m) when the midfielder was forced off after 75 minutes but his manager assuaged fears of an absence after full-time.

“He is fine. He’s fine.” – Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka

DALOT v WAN-BISSAKA

Four teams will play twice in Gameweek 20, including Manchester United. It’s a good time for popular right-back Diogo Dalot (£4.7m) to return from his hamstring injury, although the re-emergence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) is a threat to his FPL appeal.

Up until Gameweek 15, Dalot had started all league games for Erik ten Hag, yet the three post-World Cup encounters have seen Wan-Bissaka step in and collect three clean sheets.

Speaking after he featured in Friday’s 3-1 cup win, Dalot says he embraces the challenge.

“I learn a lot with Aaron, I’m sure he learns a lot with me as well. I think this is good and healthy competition that we have. I think in this squad we have at least two players for each position, a lot of players that can play other roles, so I think this dynamic makes us stronger, makes us better.

“I think we have good headaches to give to the manager and I think this is a good problem for him. We just have to give our best when we have the opportunities to play, not take that for granted because I think at this club, the demands are so high.”

It will push more managers towards in-form Luke Shaw (£5.1m), who seems slightly more likely to avoid rotations right now.

STILL NO KULUSEVSKI

Having rolled over Crystal Palace in the second half of their Gameweek 19 match, Antonio Conte was able to change seven of his first eight players against Portsmouth but had to stick with Harry Kane (£11.6m), Son Heung-min (£11.6m) and Bryan Gil (£5.0m) as the front three.

That’s because Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m) and Richarlison (£8.4m) were again absent with their muscle and hamstring injuries. Much-maligned Gil continued his recent upturn in form when grabbing an assist at Palace and, at this price, could tempt some managers for Double Gameweek 20.

Yet it sounds like Kulusevski has a strong chance of facing Arsenal on Sunday.

“Well, not for all the players we are so confident but we are confident we’ll recover someone.” – Spurs assistant boss Cristian Stellini on the possibility of injured players returning for the north London derby

FPL new signings: Who is Newcastle forward Alexander Isak?

ROUND-UP

The pre-season prospects of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) have dampened with just one league start from the last possible six. Things have gotten worse over the weekend, as his poor performance at Blackpool ended with taking a blow to the nose that forced his withdrawal.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United were finally able to welcome back record signing Alexander Isak (£6.6m). The Swedish international had only made three appearances before a thigh injury of almost four months. He played the first half at Sheffield Wednesday and, while rusty, his availability could soon affect the game-time of Callum Wilson (£7.2m).

“Hopefully, Saturday will do him good and he’ll be involved versus Leicester [Carabao Cup quarter-final]. We want him fit and available as quickly as possible. I felt that 45 minutes was his maximum. A bit of a cliche but he would be like a new signing because we haven’t had him for a long period of time.” – Eddie Howe

Finally, cheap full-back Hugo Bueno (£3.9m) was rested for the draw at Anfield, suggesting his run in Julen Lopetegui’s starting XI will continue into a promising fixture run that begins from Gameweek 23.

Hopefully the formatting will be legible (using NZ dates cut and pasted)...

Salah or Kdb for GW20-23 if no other fixtures added or subtracted?

    SALAH
    Date - GW - Vs - FDR
    Sun 15 20 BHA (A) 3
    Sun 22 21 CHE (H) 3
    Sun 5 22 WOL (A) 2
    Tue 14 23 EVE (H) 2

    KdB
    Sun 15 20 MUN (A) 4
    Fri 20 20 TOT (H) 3
    Mon 23 21 WOL (H) 2
    Mon 6 22 TOT (A) 4
    Mon 13 23 AVL (H) 2
    Thu 16 23 ARS (A) 4

KdB rotation risk particularly against 'easy' opposition and not good fantasy form, but ManC have two dgw. I own Salah and will lose value if sold, but at present would have exact money to buy him back if I transfer out for KdB this week. Have 2FT.

Based on the way the two individuals and teams are playing right now, it's still Salah to me

I need to see KDB improve before moving to him, regardless of fixture count

Class is permanent. Form is FPL

See Son and Bruno as recent examples. They're finally looking somewhat good again, but they're far from the template because their performances dropped for a while. That's FPL

Salah is very involved and Liverpool attack keeps creating chance after chance, and these involve Salah and Darwin. We need to keep doing this, because our defence was already dead but is now buried by VVD's injury

KDB has had his radar off since the World Cup. Just the one flashy game vs Pool, but he's been played out wide (Pep's fault), had his usually pinpoint passes stray by some inches, lost the ball in unexpected ways, killed counterattack opportunities with wrong decisions... Just, well, how Son started the season. He's been unlucky too, but I like the option of holding Salah and missing KDB's first few hauls which mark his return before diving back in. Fwiw, Pep has sought more control over most football matches since the Liverpool loss, leading to dropping Foden's thrust for Grealish's ball retention. This has led to a lower volume of chance creation by KDB and for Haaland, except in the much easier games like vs Leeds

I believe KdB's underlying stats haven't been as bad as his points, and the two extra games seems like a lot.

Son mask off is surely waving an FPL flag but there's too many good mids

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

I don't expect the underlying stats to dip much because he will keep spamming crosses, and someone (usually Haaland) will keep getting close to 'em

It's the accuracy of those passes that has dipped, imo. I don't know if it's a confidence thing or just a small dip in a small sample size. But when comparing him with another player who at least looks a little bit better and shoots a lot more, it sways me towards Salah

I understand the DGW argument, but I greatly prefer form + fixture quality to fixture quantity

KdB has played 3 times since the WC. He should have hauled massively against Leeds if Haaland and Grealish could finish.

Liverpool look entirely dysfunctional as a side without a midfield and the full backs lost in space. Darwin has not been good for Mo and Gakpo could further confuse things. This is an ongoing pattern from August.

I think I would hold onto Salah for now. KDB's (& City's) form isn't really screaming punishment for non-owners & no-one will cap him. Crellin is making noises like the Livepool/Chelsea double is now more likely than Arsenal DGW in 21 so keeping Salah may save you 2 transfers & retain a plum captaincy candidate for next week

Don’t see why not - both full backs have plenty in their armoury and are cheap.

The season may turn but Chelsea and Liverpool are dire at the back. City distinctly average.

Were any of those defences producing United numbers I suspect everyone would be all over their more expensive full backs.

Schär for the next 4 and roll, imo. I think you've got a good bench if he gets suspended

Stones/Akanji would be a luxury second move to bench Gabriel here, as a Bueno replacement. Not the best fixtures, but at least Gabriel has one of his two tough fixtures anyway, and City's defensive stats are still up there. I consider it a luxury move because anybody can be Pep'd

Does this XI look fine enough for the weekend?

    Ward
    Trippier - Shaw - Botman - Cancelo*
    Almiron - Rashford - Foden*
    Kane - Darwin - Haaland

Bench: Ramsdale - Martinelli - Andreas - Patterson
    2 FTs - 0.9m ITB

Thinking of moving Foden -> Rodrigo.
Will look for early team news regarding Cancelo, but he too could be transferred out (to who though?)
Other thought is Ramsdale -> DeGea, but would like to keep an Arsenal defensive cover for upcoming GWs.

    Thoughts greatly appreciated!

I like the look of Cancelo to Stones/Akanji here, as you've got most other things covered

Foden isn't a priority sale atm because Pep might start him in one. Almost definitely not both, both maybe one start or some significant minutes off the bench across both

I'd consider starting Martinelli over The Botman, btw. Spurs aren't a strong defence

Ramsdale stays, imo. Maybe the Cancelo funds will allow a Bruno punt or another downgrade for Salah's DGW21

It seems that these price change sites arent to be trusted at all. I moved early with my 2 free transfers to avoid being priced out of planned moves. I brought in Botman and sold Cancelo 4 days ago as Botman was due a price rise and Cancelo a price drop. But 4 days later and neither players price has changed at all. Annoying

I just can’t sell Cancelo ahead of a double. Happy to take the risk tbh. Bank on an attacking return in the game he does start.

Not sure I could get on a -4 to a diff City defender as don’t see any options who could get attacking returns and relying on clean sheets… which don’t happen so often.

I am happy to bench Martinelli in any tougher fixture. I also predict. Arsenal to drop 8 points in the next 15 🙂

Why do you think he is unlikely to start both games? If Walker start RB vs Spurs, surely Cancelo slots in at LB. I don't think Gomez is a concern and unlikely play Ake LB as Pep prefers one of the FB to play inverted

If things fall the right way, we could have this lineup of (triple) captaincy options:

Haaland vs Man U and Spurs
    Salah vs Chelsea and Chelsea
    Rashford vs Palace and Leeds
    Haaland vs Villa and Arsenal

Four in a row. I'm excited

Would any of you triple (c) Salah against Chelsea x2? I think a (c) would suffice that week. Chelsea do look awful though.

Generally I'm not so keen on the FBs at the moment, but this double does tempt me a little. Can be hard to predict what happens when such a misfiring attack meets a leaky defence, but if Pool can scrape one CS out of this Robbo could be in for a big haul. Should have quite a favourable matchup down that flank where he can venture into the final 3rd with confidence that he won't get overrun by Azpi on the break. I don't think I'll actually go for it myself but I can see some merit to it

I would imagine he isn’t on penalties until Rashford stops this consecutive scoring streak in all competitions (the best since Rooney 2010 or something).

Without penalties, Bruno is about 2m over priced.

GTG? Assuming Liverpool double in GW 21.......

    Kepa

    Mitro Botman White Ward

Mitro v Martinelli is a tough one. Mitro talisman and on pens but against a good defence. Martinelli up against a poor spurs defence.

Very nice! I am sticking with Cancelo Salah & Darwin as things stand too.

I think Bueno to Akanji to bench White (and set up a nice DGW/fixture-based rotation) should bring more points than losing a confident Almiron who's about to face Fulham, Palace, West Ham and Bournemouth while Newcastle are still on a high and chasing UCL a spot without European distractions

I'd only do Foden and James to Rodrigo and Shaw.

Not clear. Far from clear, even

I won't take Nketiah over Haaland Kane Mitrovic, for instance. I also fancy Ødegaard's better form and stats in recent times over Martinelli

Still, I think they're all valid options for different reasons. Team dependent, as Tony says

  25. leop911

So, I am struggling a bit to take a decision at the moment.

    Kepa
    Trippier Walker Shaw
    Saka Summerville Almiron KDB
    Darwin Haaland Kane

    Ward Andreas White Bueno

    2 FT, 0.7 ITB

    I see following needs:
    - Bring in Rashford
    - Replace Walker due to playing time.

Due to cash, I can not trade Andreas or Summerville for Rashford. The only direct transfers I can make are KDB or Saka. But KDB out in a DGW would be silly.

Even if I downgrade Walker (in a DGW...), I still do not have enough cash for Rashford.

If I downgrade Darwin (Mitro, Nketiah, Martial), I could... but I am not sure anyone of those are better picks that Darwin for this week, it's a transfer I would rather make if Liverpool does not get a DGW later on.

So currently I am on the idea of trading Saka for Rash, keeping Walker and rolling a FT. Then next week possibly trade Walker (Botmas, Schär?) and bring in Odegaard or Martinelli for Andreas or Summerville or Almiron. This is also due to the YC risk of Saka.

    Thoughts?

With the way Spurs are playing right now, I still wouldn't lose Saka

He could be on 12 points by half time. That's how Spurs defend these days

Yes, Rashford is a priority. But see two of his next three defensive opponents. I think he can wait

I know it's hard, but I think Rashford can be a DGW22 purchase and likely triple cap option

To make things easier, I'd just focus on the guy I don't expect to start: Walker to Stones, Akanji or Schär and roll, for me

I'd give Castagne the Forest game and then reassess after

Trossard is out of the XI *and* injured, so he's a priority sale for Mitoma or Mac Allister due to fixtures

I'm still not certain on which one, but Mitoma is already proven at LW and settled in that role with great stats and form, while Mac Allister *might* turn out to be better at CAM with pens and direct free kicks. It's a decision I'll delay by 1 GW. But since Trossard must go now, I'd advise taking the known over the unknown... So, Mitoma
