FPL notes – FA Cup: More Mahrez goals, Saka fitness latest

In this, the second of a two-part double-header, we round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the weekend’s FA Cup action.

Here, we focus on Arsenal, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Three FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 24 and beyond

PEP ON MAHREZ

Just days after coming off the bench to score the vital winner at Stamford Bridge, Man City winger Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) haunted Chelsea again by scoring twice in a 4-0 FA Cup victory.

A fine free-kick was later followed up by a successful spot

-kick, taking the Algerian up to six goals and two assists from his last seven outings.

Head coach Pep Guardiola loved the performance, saying his levels have gone up in recent weeks.

The quality from Riyad is everything. He loves to play football, helped us to play the game, he played really good and at 0-0 that can happen. He played an outstanding game playing wider. Good game.

“He never lost the love [for football]. But if Riyad is sitting here I would say to him: the way Riyad is training and playing right now – even when we were in Abu Dhabi when we trained for a few days – it was absolutely not the same. I was completely fair.

“When they play in this way and they complain, I can say ‘yeah, you are right, you deserve to play’. But before, he cannot play because he is not playing at the level he is playing now. Sometimes I have to let them see in their own mirror who they are.”

So could he be an alternative route into their Double Gameweek 20 midfield? FPL managers may not want to sacrifice Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) and the more explosive Mahrez is there for £5m less.

It’s a particularly bad time to be predicting Pep’s line-ups but it’s interesting to note that – since joining in 2018/19 – Mahrez has started all five trips to Spurs but none of the five at home.

Unfortunately, after Saturday’s Manchester derby, the champions will be hosting Spurs.

Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Kyle Walker (£4.8m) kept their places from Gameweek 19 and were much improved, boosting hopes for owners that they might have a significant part to play in the upcoming doubles.

SAKA “FINE”

The 20th and final Premier League team in FA Cup third-round action were Arsenal, who eventually saw off Oxford United 3-0 on Monday night.

A brace for Eddie Nketiah (£6.5m) kept up his fine record in the absence of Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m), with Gabriel Martinelli assisting the forward’s second strike.

“He showed great composure. He is a great finisher and the timing of his runs as well. The decision making to wait to the last moment shows his quality. It’s not only that – his understanding, his work rate I think is getting better and better. And I’m really happy with him.

“The problem is we have only one! And to go for that many months til Jesus is back is not easy. But we have to get the most out of the players that we have at the moment and if we can have some reinforcements – great.” – Mikel Arteta on Eddie Nketiah

Of note to Martinelli was the first appearance in months for the fit-again Emile Smith Rowe (£5.6m), who was the Brazilian’s positional rival for much of 2021/22.

“It’s good. It’s been four months since he played so I think it was a perfect game to give him some minutes, to get off the blocks and now he needs to start to get available and start to play at the highest level because we’re going to need him.” – Mikel Arteta on Emile Smith Rowe

There was a scare for owners of Bukayo Saka (£8.1m) when the midfielder was forced off after 75 minutes but his manager assuaged fears of an absence after full-time.

“He is fine. He’s fine.” – Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka

DALOT v WAN-BISSAKA

Four teams will play twice in Gameweek 20, including Manchester United. It’s a good time for popular right-back Diogo Dalot (£4.7m) to return from his hamstring injury, although the re-emergence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) is a threat to his FPL appeal.

Up until Gameweek 15, Dalot had started all league games for Erik ten Hag, yet the three post-World Cup encounters have seen Wan-Bissaka step in and collect three clean sheets.

Speaking after he featured in Friday’s 3-1 cup win, Dalot says he embraces the challenge.

“I learn a lot with Aaron, I’m sure he learns a lot with me as well. I think this is good and healthy competition that we have. I think in this squad we have at least two players for each position, a lot of players that can play other roles, so I think this dynamic makes us stronger, makes us better.

“I think we have good headaches to give to the manager and I think this is a good problem for him. We just have to give our best when we have the opportunities to play, not take that for granted because I think at this club, the demands are so high.”

It will push more managers towards in-form Luke Shaw (£5.1m), who seems slightly more likely to avoid rotations right now.

STILL NO KULUSEVSKI

Having rolled over Crystal Palace in the second half of their Gameweek 19 match, Antonio Conte was able to change seven of his first eight players against Portsmouth but had to stick with Harry Kane (£11.6m), Son Heung-min (£11.6m) and Bryan Gil (£5.0m) as the front three.

That’s because Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m) and Richarlison (£8.4m) were again absent with their muscle and hamstring injuries. Much-maligned Gil continued his recent upturn in form when grabbing an assist at Palace and, at this price, could tempt some managers for Double Gameweek 20.

Yet it sounds like Kulusevski has a strong chance of facing Arsenal on Sunday.

“Well, not for all the players we are so confident but we are confident we’ll recover someone.” – Spurs assistant boss Cristian Stellini on the possibility of injured players returning for the north London derby

FPL new signings: Who is Newcastle forward Alexander Isak?

ROUND-UP

The pre-season prospects of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) have dampened with just one league start from the last possible six. Things have gotten worse over the weekend, as his poor performance at Blackpool ended with taking a blow to the nose that forced his withdrawal.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United were finally able to welcome back record signing Alexander Isak (£6.6m). The Swedish international had only made three appearances before a thigh injury of almost four months. He played the first half at Sheffield Wednesday and, while rusty, his availability could soon affect the game-time of Callum Wilson (£7.2m).

“Hopefully, Saturday will do him good and he’ll be involved versus Leicester [Carabao Cup quarter-final]. We want him fit and available as quickly as possible. I felt that 45 minutes was his maximum. A bit of a cliche but he would be like a new signing because we haven’t had him for a long period of time.” – Eddie Howe

Finally, cheap full-back Hugo Bueno (£3.9m) was rested for the draw at Anfield, suggesting his run in Julen Lopetegui’s starting XI will continue into a promising fixture run that begins from Gameweek 23.

Haaland Foden

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

What are your priorities here? There's a couple of easy ways to Kane for -4. But would you rather keep Darwin? I think I would definitely do something involving replacing Cancelo

It's come down to this, currently not arsed getting another united or city defender but here's the options

    James to...

    A) United Defender
    B) City Defender
    C) Brentford Defender
    D) Newcastle Defender (Have Trippier)

          There are a few reasons...

1.) He has only just returned from a hamstring injury
2.) Wan-Bissaka has played well in the recent games he has played in
3.) It's right in between the two toughest games of the season, Man City and Arsenal

I'd say there is about a 75% chance Dalot is rested for Palace, and a 60% chance Shaw is rested too.

How did you get 60% for Shaw? You've been listening to too many fantasy sites. Shaw is one of United's best players, he will start league games if he's fit.

    Reposting my City defense breakdown.

    LB - Cancelo, Ake, Gomez
    RCB - Stones, Akanji
    LCB - Ake, Laporte
    RB - Walker, Lewis

I think this is the pecking order but who really knows. For three games in a week, I think only ONE of Ake or Stones start all since both were rested vs Chelsea and are first choice imo.

Stones is maybe the most nailed in his position because he's performing better than Akanji but Ake has added flexibility in being able to play LB or LCB and was kept on at LB over Cancelo when City were in need of a goal against Chelsea. That says quite a lot.

It was weird though that Pep decided to play Cancelo at RW which clearly just didn't work in the league game vs Chelsea. Wondering if he will shift him back to LB where he has been first choice all season but recent form says he won't. It will be Ake at LB against United I think, especially up against Antony for his defensive ability.

    So predictions...

Utd - Ake Laporte Stones Walker
Spurs - Cancelo Ake Stones Lewis
Wolves - Ake Laporte Akanji Lewis

Conclusion is that Stones and Ake are the best picks for the DGW. I like Ake's flexibility and slightly lower price so am looking at bringing him in. He also has decent goal threat from set pieces.

Ake starting at LCB boils down to Laporte's fitness after recovering from his injury imo

I don't think Laporte is that nailed even when fully fit. Stones - Laporte has historically not been that strong of a pairing and Ake is performing so well at both LCB and LB that I think it's his place to lose atm.

      Dias definitely ruled out?

Stones can also play RB btw.

Some slight amendments to predicted lineups. Read a thread this morning that was interesting... Basically City use one ball playing fullback that drops into CM - Cancelo or Lewis and then a more defensively focused CB on the other side.

      So...

Utd - Ake Laporte Stones Lewis
Spurs - Cancelo Ake Stones Walker
Wolves - Ake Laporte Akanji Lewis

In the Chelsea game when they subbed off Cancelo and Walker they put on Lewis and Akanji. So... one defensive and one offensive and back to their original 3 at the back build up with a half back in CM. The Cancelo at RW experiment didn't work so I expect him to come in at LB or just not at all and Lewis start at RB with Ake on the other side.

I agree with the Ake/ Lewis and Cancelo/Walker combo but see the link below for interesting Pep quote on Ake playing LB and doing well with the ball.

This won't go the way you expect. Pep will be considering things you haven't even considered or are privy to. Fitness data, internal discipline, tactical complexities. It's an avoid for me.

Haaland, KDB, Ederson, Bernardo, Rodri are the only players that get consistent minutes.

Of course this is possible. But we have to make some educated guesses. A City defender is still really important imo with 2 sets of possible doubles over 3 gameweeks.

Hopefully I've not jinxed this, but Ake has scored 0 goals and got 0 assists in the league this season, so it's goal threat that so far has amounted to nothing.

Considering most will have Rashford and now potentially Kane, can't really see the value in bringing in a City defender or replacing an existing one.

Stones & Ake are their best CB pairing currently. I rate Stones higher than Ake in terms of nailedness & also slightly superior in goal threat too (the stats support this).

I think people are making arguments not to get Stones because he's a few 0.1m(s) more expensive, which is understandable but also very bias.

You know what, I agree. Stones is the better pick the more I look at it. That 0.4m is surprisingly useful though I'm finding in some advanced transfer plans that involve bringing Liverpool players back in for GW22.

I still have Cancelo and I might just keep him for the doubles.

He's a weird one. Used to be a key player, but has lost his place for both City and Portugal after poor form. Deservedly so.

Will surely re-establish himself soon, too good not to...

Yeah I'm in this situation too. If the DGW fixtures were better I might sell him for Stones, but as City could feasably concede in both games the potential of a big score feels tricker. Of course not impossible, but enough to pay off the hit?

I'm in a fortunate position where I can get Kane for free, and have 6 DGW players without a hit.

Feels unnecessary to take that hit, although I'm kind of aware I'll probably end up taking a hit in later GWs for Cancelo etc... so just a question of whether to do it this week or not.

The Akanji slander here is deep. I've written too many paragraphs on this already, but here are a few more

It's Pep and he'll be (mis)interpreted in varying ways by different people, including me

My interpretation of the EPL starts since Akanji joined Man City is that Stones and Akanji are the preferred EPL CB pair when everybody's fit and available (Laporte and Dias have been benched twice or more for them in EPL), while Stones only found himself at RB for a while because of Walker's injury and before Lewis emerged in the World Cup break friendlies. Ake has been locked at LB since Cancelo got dropped post-WC, and Pep recently praised Ake for "playing beyond our expectations as a left-back":

      https://twitter.com/ColmVHayes/status/1612076884518469632?t=nVjRsxYmjdYS7P8L24W--A&s=19

That's what I've seen so far. It's possible to list EPL starts and their positions to show this, but that's too much work with limited upside atm because Pep can change anything on a dime, like what he's done to Foden since the Liverpool loss and Cancelo since the World Cup

What I'll still add re Akanji is that the one time Pep benched him (for Rodri at CB, so clearly an experiment), he subbed Akanji on at halftime and said post-match that his lineup was a mistake

      1. Piggs Boson

With Stones and Akanji, I worry about Dias mainly, they haven't been keeping CSs without him. 5/6 CSs have come when Dias has played.

I've been impressed by Ake recently, for City and Netherlands, but he has so much competition...

Yes, but see how many times Pep has benched Dias when fit in the links below

As you said earlier in this thread, Pep has his reasons that we might never hear of. I'm just saying what's happened

The only time Dias was benched in the league when fully fit was against United, and they conceded 3 goals. Against Leicester and Fulham he was carrying a problem.

I like Akanji as a player but I'm concerned he's got more starts than he otherwise might have had given the other injuries at RB (Walker) and LCB (Laporte).

Now the RBs (Walker & Lewis) are here, as well as the LBs (Ake, with Cancelo getting some more mins again) - I feel like he'll be the odd man out here and then.

I (and many City fans) think that Stones has been one of their best players this season. Stones playing at RB earlier in the season is more of a way to get one of their best players into the XI rather than preferring Akanji over Stones at RCB.

Akanji can't play RB so much. But that's fine, since he can play LCB. Only issue with that now is that Ake (who can play LCB/LB) is performing even better, and Laporte is also back.

There's plenty of games and all options will get minutes but I feel like people here (incl. content creators) have really been over-egging his nailedness over a spare few 0.1m, when Stones/Ake are staring then in the face & have better goal threat.

Why not WC? We're already in DGW season, which is what people usually delay the WC for

Maybe consider hitting that WC button to negate that -12, might as well.

Just dropping by to point out the difference between correlation and causality here

It's just chance. Doesn't have much of a bearing on this coming DGW

Even less of a bearing than the usual "Player X has scored/blanked 5 times against Team Y", because at least the player would be aware of his record and might want to continue/reverse it

No, there's a chance that any CB playing for a good team can score/assist in a DGW

I'm just saying it's still chance. Same chance that they'd score in any two games

The fact that it is a DGW is unknown/unimportant to them, at least most of the time

If they score well, it doesn't change my point 🙂

    Arrizabalaga (Ward)
    Trippier Shaw Botman (Ream Bueno)
    Salah Saka Rashford Martinelli (Pereira)
    Haaland Nunez Nketiah

1 free transfer and £3.7m money remaining.

I have so many ideas what to do, but at the same time I could easily leave it as it is and be okay with it. Sitting tight and waiting for the forthcoming DGW news and announcements.

If it wasn't for Robertson's injury, I probably wouldn't go there. He was doubtful and I simply thought to myself - why the hell not. I took similar risks in the past and will continue to do so. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't.

Robbo's injury made me bench him for White (phew!) and now I've sold him for Schär... Makes up for the pain of getting Robbo on WC18

          Good luck 🙂

Nice team, looks like mine, hope your rank is better :')

Assume you did Cancelo -> Botman?

I still have him and 2FT. Waiting until closer to deadline before making decisions.

I'm trying to break into the top 500k, but it's tough. I went without Cancelo after the World Cup and I sold James for Botman in GW18.

Nobody can predict the future, so if you're feeling lucky, you may as well keep him. Joao could get a huge haul even with limited minutes, or end up as a disaster (0-2 points). You just have to trust your gut on this one.

KDB & Kane should be your targets. You could save FT but those two could hurt your rank.

      1. Arteta
        • 8 Years

I know. I can get Kane and De Bruyne for a hit, but then I have to count on Brighton to stop Liverpool from scoring.

Is Dalot a better option or play Pep roulette with a City def?

I think Dalot is a better option. I've done Cancelo + Almiron -> Dalot + Mahrez for this week, so I have Mahrez, KDB and Haaland (along with Shaw Dalot and Rashford) for the doubles. It's not like City have been reliable keepers of clean sheets so I'm hoping their attack is worth more. I don't think Dalot and Shaw will both play all of both games, though (nor will Mahrez, probably), but they'll all get minutes.

WC18 saved my season. 3.7m to 2.5m, and a good 15-man squad going into what looks like 5 DGWs in a row from GW19 to GW23

      Two caveats, though:

      1. Only get players you want long-term. Avoid getting a DGW player you wouldn't have gotten for a SGW, because a Wildcard is not a Free Hit, as tempting as it might be to treat it that way

      2. Only use it if your current team has enough issues to need it, or if you're quite convinced that the WC team is much better and won't need multiple fires to be put out anytime soon due to... Well, too many punts from point 1

    Kepa

Seems a fair few people are taking hits to bring in United and City defenders this week.

Two tough fixtures for both clubs - I'd be surprised to see a single CS.

I wouldn't call Palace tough exactly. 10 goals in their
9 home games. Plus the lure of another DGW for Man Utd in 22

You'd have to be sure Dalot plays the Palace match though. Palace game is squeezed between MCI & ARS.

3 days recovery isn't tons for a player just back from injury, with a very intense schedule in the short term.

Perhaps you may have a point re the Palace fixture. I guess it depends on whether they turn up - they have a knack of pulling off some unexpected wins most seasons.

I still pretty much agree with you - wouldn't hit them in unless your other options have a terrible fixture or problematic xMins. Playing Bueno this week is fine instead

Obviously this comment has no place in this forum but should anyone be bitten by DGW fever - Olise makes quite as much sense as Zaha. Probably more.

Have a well set up side and a luxury mid transfer that’s the smarter gamble. He’s also cheap enough to hold a week to move on in 22.

You’ll find the stats on the main FPL site - doesn’t hurt that he’ll be up against Cucu or the next makeshift Chelsea LB.

Best option this week with 1FT?

    Kepa
    Laporte Trippier Shaw
    Salah Almiron Martinelli Rashford
    Haaland(c) Kane(vc) Mitro

    Ward Bueno Andreas Patterson

    A) Save FT
    B) Salah --> KDB
    C) Mitro --> Martial

It's crazy how much people overthink fantasy football. Just go with your instinct, stop asking people who you should pick, stop listening to people like Andy on youtube, he often gives bad advice. Copying other people is weak/lazy, it's your game, if you do what others tell you, you're not playing fantasy football yourself, others are doing it for you.
