FPL Gameweek 37: Will Pep rotate if City win the league?

Arsenal’s Gameweek 36 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion means that Manchester City can seal the 2022/23 Premier League title this coming weekend.

A win over Chelsea on Sunday would see Pep Guardiola’s troops over the line, while they will be crowned champions without kicking a ball if Arsenal slip up at Nottingham Forest a day earlier.

The problem for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers is that City have a ‘double’ in Gameweek 37, with a trip to Brighton still to come.

Should the title be already in the bag, will Guardiola rest his big players with an upcoming cup final (or two) in mind? Or will he prefer to build “rhythm” going into those key early-June dates? Rotation can happen at the best of times when it comes to Pep, of course, but there are some names like Erling Haaland (£12.4m) and Ruben Dias (£6.0m) who are more immune to it than others.

Using Transfermarkt as well as our own Members Area, we take a look back at what Guardiola has done after the title has been won in previous seasons and canvas your opinions on the subject.

2021/22

There’s actually not much to report on from last season, as the title not only went to the last day but also the final 15 minutes as City pegged back a two-goal deficit to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and see themselves over the line.

In a cautionary tale ahead of this Wednesday’s rematch with Real Madrid, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were the two attackers who lasted 120 minutes in the crushing semi-final defeat last season – and they were duly benched in the next league match against Newcastle.

2020/21

City won the title with three games to spare in 2020/21 and did it without kicking a ball, thanks to their cross-city rivals’ 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City on May 11.

In the very next league game, against Newcastle United, Guardiola made five changes and sent out a side that contained Scott Carson, Eric Garcia, Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres, four players who were very much back-ups at the time:

“Everyone wants him [Scott Carson] to play because he is an important part of the group and the locker room. Everybody loves him so much and we wanted to let him play and be part of the success. I asked if he was ready to play and he said, ‘yes of course’.

“Our job is to do the best selection as possible and the guys playing today deserve to play.

“We are going to enjoy it. We will play the three games with one eye on the final of the Champions League.” – Pep Guardiola explaining his team selection in the Gameweek 36 clash with Newcastle United

Gameweek 38 was back to full strength, with a Champions League final against Chelsea following six days after it.

Nine of the starting line-up that Guardiola sent out against Everton in Gameweek 38 kept their places for that final, with only Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus of the final-day XI taken out for Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan in Porto; the City boss accused of ‘over-thinking’ by going striker-less and without a midfield anchor against Thomas Tuchel’s Blues.

Pretty much everyone of note got two starts in the final three post-title games, with no-one starting all three (Kevin De Bruyne was injury-affected, hence just the one start):

if city win the league against chelsea I would think most fringe players start against birghton with erling.-lewis -plamer plus foden mahrez etc.. i think ortega definitely plays. theres no record points tally to go for. the only thing is erling racking up more goals. I think a huge advantage for madrid last year in the run up to the final was resting players during the end of season league run in and i think pep will be thinking of doing the same thing.

To be fair, regardless of whether Chelsea get a result at Man City, Pep is always likely to rotate Sunday to Wednesday.

Resting some of the more regular players doesn't necessarily help Brighton out either.

Just got to hope there's no injuries on Wednesday night.

With Stones, KDB and Haaland I feel like I've made my Man City bed and without jiggery-pokery I should just enjoy laying in it!

Grealish might well be back. The rest was for Real Madrid.

I guess that could go to extra time and penalties but they've got 4 days till Chelsea.

I'd definitely just stick in your position and hope for the best. I sold Stones last week to try get KDB in this week so I feel it's a bit more difficult to figure out what to do now (especially as I'm somehow in touching distance of top spot in my main ML). Feels like Bruno is the ideal choice but even then I don't know what to do as I can get him in for Grealish or Rashford and save a Salah hokey-cokey so I can make an extra punt this or next week, but really I want Rashford to be fit and I feel I need to keep Grealish given how many rivals will play next week

KDB could still be the play against Chelsea with some potential for minutes at Brighton as a bonus.

        Rashford news defines a lot.

The thing with Bruno is he's involved but not quite clicking. I'm sure it will come good for him soon.

Good to hear you've got a good chance in your main mini league.

        Good luck!

Yeah and KDB has a good recent record v Chelsea IIRC and Brighton should suit him too. I've certainly read a lot from Bruno owners saying he should be getting far more returns! Cheers mate, good luck to you too for the run-in!

Been thinking of Alvarez but watched MOTD and I hardly noticed he was playing apart from one instance where he picked up the ball in his own half, wasn't much different from last week I think? Just not sure he's worth it. But personally I'd be reluctant to take hits so late on, very little time to pay off (although I'm not saying it won't happen)

True that, also feel like Bruno is due a monster haul considering his recent stats, he’s just been really unlucky lately, also down to the fact Martial Sancho and Antony just can’t finish…
Tricky decision will definitely have to give it some thought.

Uncertainty and plenty of decent midfield picks.

There's 3 value options in MacA, Eze and Mitoma for a start plus premiums.

No point carrying an injured player with just 2 transfer opportunities remaining.

Of course some news on the severity would help.

Sold just before last deadline. Too late in the season to be carrying injured players & dont have much of a bench - luckily Estupinan is autosubbing for KDB but that would have left only Greenwood/Toti to cover Rashford

If you want a Man City player for the next 3 then Rodri might be your best bet. Plus Haaland too.

Or just accept the compromise that it's for 2 games or avoid.

They do have 2 tricky away games but should seal it against Chelsea at home.

Forest are also better at their place so Arsenal could lose it first on Saturday evening.

    1. Lord of Ings
      • 8 Years

Mahrez could easily start all 3 as well, although unlikely. Still pretty sure he starts 2 atleast, him and Gundogan are the only ones who I feel will certainly start 2 at the very least and one could sneak in a third.

So if the question is 2 games for Mahrez or Gundogan or KDB then what's the answer?

All strong options plus Grealish too.

Not much in Man United midfield unless Rashford comes back fit, or you can easily get to Bruno again.

        1. Lord of Ings
          • 8 Years

Grealish doesn’t have the goal threat a gundo or Mahrez possess, even Alvarez is a better pick than Grealish I’d say.
His best bet is to win a penalty or something, playing well always doesn’t fetch you points!
I think Gundogan is extremely streaky and he’s a very decent pick, Mahrez is always decent as well.

Would agree with this. Also with City nearly having their hands on the trophy I feel like they'll go all out to blast away Chelsea and then rotate v Brighton who are still chasing Europe, so I don't know if I'd expect clean sheets this week

Isn't Grealish as likely as Mahrez?

Why not Gundogan, do you think that ship has sailed or he'll continue on a streak?

      Also, would you bench Rashford?

I feel like Mahrez more likely to get the PL game time. Pondered Gundogan but think he is likely to be rotated out for Brighton and think ship probably has sailed.

Rashford - will take a view nearer the time but wouldn’t want a second game sub appearance only so currently thinking bench.

In that case aren't you better off selling Rashford to Mahrez then?

            Oh

            Just seen Alvarez.

It's hard to pivot around 3 Man City, Man Utd, Brighton, Newcastle etc.

    Steele
    Stones, Lindelöf, AWB
    Salah, KDB, Mac10, Mitoma, Rashford
    Haaland, Wilson

    Iversen. Isak, Trippier, Toti.

With 1 FT + £0.3m itb am I best to roll into gw38?

Isak covers Rashford or Wilson, or just do a simple switch of Rashford to Eze with Man City rotation to consider etc.

Very risky but I like kdb Rashford to Bruno and Mahrez/gundo for -4.
I think KDB is going to get limited minutes to keep him fit for the big games.

Yep I would rather take 2 FTs into 38 than shuffle Utd/City assets here

So who are the preferred picks for United and City?
Double up on United def? Bruno or Antony if Rash ain't fit?
Which City def/mid for a triple up or all of them just subject to rotation?

    1. Lord of Ings
      • 8 Years
      11 months, 27 days ago

      Bruno
      Shaw
      Antony
      Ddg
      Lindelof(budget)

      Gundog/Mahrez
      Alvarez

These would be my picks to bring in.(assuming everyone has Haaland)
      Wouldn’t touch city defence.

The last 2 games yeah, but Alvarez apart from that has been amazing whenever he’s played. Returns should come!

Sticking with KDB, Haaland, Mahrez. Only have Shaw for Utd & just rolling with that. Maybe I'm getting sloppy / interest is fading out here but it feels more fun to me to have 2 FTs for final day punts rather than do something like Salah - Bruno - Salah

My team is full of injured players, so i'm thinking to take a double hit with:
Kane, Andreas, Chilwell -> Alvarez, Bruno, Shaw (-8)
    What do you think?

    Current team
    Pope
    Estupinan TAA Trippier Henry
    Mitoma Mac Allister Rashford
    Haaland Kane Wilsom

    Raya Martinelli Chilwell Andreas

With those injuries you should do something but I'd avoid taking out the fit players where possible.

Yes, I'm not keen to rid off Kane, he has nice fixtures but my funds are very limited to take in someone decent (0.9m ITB)

Don't ditch Kane. He'll go crazy in GW38.
Martinelli's season is over, downgrade to Eze/Olise.
Newcastle no longer getting CSs and Trippier has only got 2 attacking returns since the World Cup so switch him to Shaw.

I'd then wait out on Rashford and downgrade Chilwell to fodder in 38 to fund whatever final week move you want to play with.

My respectable season is unwinding rapidly! Only a ten point lead in my ML now…

I have Kepa, chilwell, zinch, rashy and martinelli.

Who goes first? Shaw, ddg and Antony in -8?

    Raya (kepa)

    Trips schar mee (chilly, zinc)

    Martinelli saka mitoma Mac

    Haaland Isak Alvarez

Play Raya, too many other fires to put out
      Chillwell, Zinch > Shaw, TAA?
Rashy/Martinelli - wait on news otherwise go to Gundo

      With ten points lead I wouldn’t take a -8…
      Martinelli -> Mahrez/Gundo maybe?

      Antony seems a huge punt.

Can you do Chilwell to Toti to afford Bruno in midfield?

Just stick with the keepers now.

    1) Isak/Wilson -> Alvarez
    2) Grealish/Rashford -> Mahrez/Gundogan
    3) Other? (can’t afford Tripp/Chill -> TAA)

    (1FT, 2.0 itb)

    DDG
    Trippier/Shaw/Estu
    Salah/Rash/Mitoma/Mac/Grealish
    Haaland/Wilson

    Bench: Iversen, Isak, Chilwell, Pinnock

1FT, 4.0M ITB. My midfield has almost disappeared due to injuries.

    Do March -> Gundo?

    Kepa
    Trippier Estupian White
    Rashford* Salah March* Mac10 Martinelli*
    Watkins Haaland

    Raya Toney* Mings Pinnock

    Kepa
    Shaw Estupian Stones TAA
    Mac Salah Mitoma
    Isak Haaland Wilson

    Raya. Rashford. Trippier. Martinelli

1FT and a 10 point lead in the ML. I don't have enough in the bank to just bring in a different GK or a Man City MF for Rashord, so...

    1) Save
    2) Wilson > Alvarez
    3) Wilson and Kepa > Alvarez and DDG (-4)
