James v Chilwell: Who is the best pick in FPL 2023/24?

Reece James (£5.5m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) have been priced up equally in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for the 2023/24 season.

Both players have dropped in price by £0.5m after injury-hit campaigns but will surely have big roles to play under new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, who likes his full-backs to get forward at every opportunity.

Some Fantasy managers will be tempted to punt on a Blues defender given their appealing run of opening fixtures, but which is best?

We take a closer look in this Premium Members article.

Injury updates for FPL Gameweek 13

When fit, there are few better FPL defenders to own than James and Chilwell, but neither of them are reliable.

In their past three seasons with Chelsea, they’ve missed 30 and 38 matches respectively through injury per Transfermarkt, averaging roughly 20 and 16 starts per campaign.

In 2022/23, knee and hamstring injuries disrupted James’ season, limiting him to just 14 Premier League starts, while Chilwell was also hit by hamstring problems which ruled him out of the FIFA World Cup, meaning he only fared slightly better.

2020/21JamesChilwell
Starts2527

It means the sample size for their data in 2022/23 is of course limited, but they were available enough of the time to demonstrate just how important they can be under Pochettino.

GOAL THREAT

James44.577.9207.8311.81222.5
Chilwell36.488.7129354.8978.6

While James shot more often in 2022/23, it was Chilwell who posed the greater goal threat, posting superior numbers for minutes per shot in the box (129 v 207.8) and minutes per xG (978.6 v 1222.5).

That’s because 10 of James’ 16 efforts were from outside the area, compared to Chilwell’s five of 16, which is captured below.

Above: James (left) and Chilwell’s (right) xG shot maps in 2022/23

In fact, nine of James’ efforts last term were shots from set plays, compared to Chilwell’s three, putting an even greater distance between them from open play.

However, both players’ averages fell away in the campaign just gone, which was surely a consequence of Chelsea having three different managers in 2022/23, who each brought their own ideas and tactics.

James’ run-outs at centre-half should also be factored in, which limited his attacking threat.

In a settled system, it’s fair to say we can expect both players’ output to improve in 2023/24.

Martenelli, Maddison and Ferguson could all rotate.

I don't like the keeper too much and there's not much on the bench. Besides that it has the core strength but no cover. I can aee the attraction but it's optimistic too.

Out of the crop of £6.5m midfielders that balance out the squad, do you think that Eze and Mbeumo are more likely to out perform the Brighton 3 this season?

Mbeumo I think he'll be the talisman with Toney banned. The Brighton 3 will do well but I don't think there's a key talisman amongst them; the points will be distributed.

It's a fair observation on the Brighton mids but if they can get around 150 points again that's going to count, even if you switch a hit during the season.

On the face of it Mitoma has the best chance as he only started 24 games laat season whilst March had 31 starts amd Gross 37.

      I think so.

Eze is being slept on and think that he will be integral to all Palace's attacks. Outscored Mitoma and Mbeumo last year, possibly on penalties as well.

Have this feeling Brighton and Brentford won't do as well this season compared to lasr

They do indeed. As we saw in the 2nd half of last season, RDZ will rotate a lot when the fixtures are coming thick and fast.

Seen this said quite a bit lately but I wonder if the rotation threat is being overstated. BHA had an absolutely insane schedule, more intense than UEL, but RDZ actually didn't make many changes initially & even played the likes of Mitoma against Grimsby & Stoke in the cup. Even after the gruelling loss on pens in the SF, he still put out the same full strength team 3 days later at Forest - and only after losing there did he start to make adjustments for fatigue. So I don't get the impression he's particularly trigger-happy on rotation.

That's the conundrum, but if he does he is way ahead.

11 goals and 7 assists in 22 starts last season.

I think his previous form is a v reliable indicator and he could feature more prominently this season and at the outset.

I hope you’re right, but many have been saying the same thing for the last 3 years - this will be his breakout season, first choice etc. Unfortunately it never is, and may never be with Pep at the helm. I’d like to see him at a different club where he plays every week. It would benefit him and the England national team.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. He kept five clean sheets after Dyche's appointment, same as Raya, and you'd expect a bit of defensive improvement from Everton too with a proper pre-season.

I'm a bit confused by those saying "fixtures". Fulham ripped them to pieces at Goodison under Dyche, with no Mitro and Dan James up front. Wolves is good but also lost that one at home last season. Facing a promoted side away in the first few games is unlikely to be a banker CS. So its basically GW7-8 you're hanging in for..?

  8. LangerznMash
    • 7 Years

Re: the article. No one is going to consider James/Chilwell until GW3 due to fixtures and by then will have two weeks extra data to assess the better option.
Unlikely either will be a great FPL asset this season due to Poch usually preferring a bacck4, so much less licence to get forward and get attack returns.
In terms of value they would have to score at least 150 points overall to be considered worthy of their £5.5m price tags. However, I think there is much better value in the £4.5m defenders, and you can afford to rotate these to dodge difficult fixtures (can't really bench a £5.5m defender).
    TL;DR = James/Chilwell are a NO GO.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

I wouldn't say 'no one' although neither are on my watchlist.
There will be a fair few who have high hopes on a Poch Chelsea, fit wingbacks and the new-look squad. West Ham's attack looks flaccid at the moment, so only the first game looks tricky.

      1. LangerznMash

Allow me to change that statement from ''no one'' to "only people punting on James hauling an 18 pointer, instead of considering overall value" lol.

Pochettino always plays a back4 and in his last season at Spurs (19/20) his fullbacks (Rose, Davies, Aurier, KWP) managed a whopping 6 attack returns between them all season, not one single 'haul'.

The potential for a Chelsea fullback to haul an 18 pointer under Poch is very low.

Ideally you don't need to go to fodder on midfield with the pricing, Douglas Luiz at £5.5m offers value with goals and assists.

He got 6 goals and 7 assists in 33 starts and just under 3,000 mins last season which is reasonable. 142 points for £5.5m if he performs well again and Villa should do.

    Flekken
    Trent - Estupiñán - Pedro P
    Saka - Rashford - Mbeumo - Enciso
    Haaland - Kane

    (Strakosha - Bell - Mendes - Semenyo)

      3-4-2 not a valid formation 😉

Would wait to see whether Raya stays at Brentford first as there was a similar scenario before the start of last season as to who Brentford's starting keeper would be

If Raya stays Botman would probably become a Brentford 4.5 def. Henry probably.

Best I could come up with to fit Salah TAA and Haaland

    Areola
    TAA - Estupinan - Gabriel - Botman
    Salah - Saka - Foden - Encisio
    Haaland - Jesus

    Forster Mings - 4.5 - 4.5

      I’ve managed to do it:
      Pickford
      TAA Estupinian Gabriel
      Salah Martinelli Maddison Mitoma Mbeumo
      Haaland Ferguson
      /Areola Bell Beyer Woodrow

  15. Lukakus Unit

First team (will be changed repeatedly before GW1):

    Ederson
    TAA - Shaw - Estupinan
Saka - Odegaard - Grealish or Foden - Mitoma - Marsh
    Haaland - Jesus

    Bench:
    Baldock - Bell - Surridge

    My rationale:
    - Profit from Arsenal/Brighton’s early fixtures before (possibly) switching to other players (MUFC)
    - Three City players (might switch Ederson to another GK and bring in Dias, but I like the three D in my team already more to start the season)
    - If TAA is still a converted midfielder in preseason, he’s a keeper

    Thoughts?

If you're going to max out on the keeper then you're better off doing so with Alisson.

Like the Arsenal double up in midfield. Not so sure about the Brighton two. I think I'd want Fernandes or Rashford for GW against Wolves.

What's the reason for Brentford spending around £11m on a new keeper when they have Raya and 5 on the books?

Raya is insisting on a move. He won't be their goalkeeper. Better buy now than wait until Raya has gone and selling clubs can hold the Bees to ransom.

Two from Four £4.0m/£4.5m defender rotation pairing system.
FFS' current 'predicted teams' tab has 17 out 20 teams starting a defender valued at £4.5m or less (not Arsenal, Liverpool or ManCity).
    I think it is possible to plan a rotation pair system (with the odd planned transfer) to create a great budget back line based on the fixture ticker. This should be of interest to people who wish to go with both Salah + Haaland for example;
    Pickford - £4.0m
    Saliba - £4.5m - £4.5m - £4.5m - £4.0m (= only £22.5m in total!)
    Salah - Saka - Foden - Maddison - Mbeumo
    Haaland - Jesus - £4.5m

Starting with Webster, Cash, Fofana and Baldock, then transferring In Botman for Webster after GW4 gives you a lovely run of fixtures...
    GW1: Webster + Baldock = LUT + CRY
    GW2: Cash + Baldock/Webster = EVE + nfo/wol
    GW3: Fofana + Cash = LUT + WHU
    GW4: Fofana + Baldock = NFO + EVE
    GW5: Botman + Cash = BRE + CRY
    GW6: Fofana + Botman = AVL + shu
    GW7: Fofana + Botman = ful + BUR

FFS' fixture ticker lists all 14 of these fixtures as blue for easy.

Sasa Kalajdzic (5.0 FW) is one to monitor in pre-season, was injured all of last season, but had decent numbers in Bundesliga. Signed for £15m, 6’7 and 25 years old. All changes if Wolves sign another ST, but currently only Fabio Silva & Jimenez are competition.

    Pickford (Areola)

    James Saliba Ake (Botman Beyer)

Salah Bruno F Saka Eke Mbeumo

Kane Wilson/or a 7.5 so I can strengthen defence (Semenya)

Very very early non Haaland draft that will change lots for sure, especially with the Kane situation..but a side with several penalty takers and a bit of wriggle room too

    I await the criticisms 😉

Never considered that. I think as the focal point in attack for a team pushing top 6, he should continue to do well. I prefer him over Jesus as I'm more inclined to go with double Arsenal midfield and a defender.

I think the fact that he’s the same price as Jesus and Ars have better opening fixtures is the main reason.

He also tailed off at the end of the season but had a great campaign overall.

        He's a good pick.

Arsenal might struggle more when the Champions League kicks in. But Jesus looks the shiny option as you say.

I also think Isak will emerge as a sharp option, arguably he's a better finisher. Depends on his starting position.

            Yeah

The signing of Barnes is an interesting one. If he nails down the LW spot then Isak and Wilson won’t play together as much, decreasing the game time for one, or both of them.

Isak played wide left due to injuries last season, meaning Joelinton had to drop back. It was also at a time that ASM was just coming back from injury. Arguably the link up between Joelinton and Willock on the left wing/midfield was the best combination last season.

I don't think Isak will play left wing, unless there are no other options. When the team was at its strongest Isak was upfront and Wilson on the bench.

I agree, I think Isak is the better all round player. Wilson’s probably the better finisher/goal scorer but Isak is better on the ball and with his link up play. Which is probably why Howe seems to favour him.

Howe prefers Wilson as striker. As per his comments and team last season. It should be common knowledge by now.

After they both came back from injury, Isak was first choice. Wilson came off the bench or started midweek games. It was only when there were injuries in midfield that Isak was put in the left and Wilson got the nod upfront.

    Estupinan or Botman? https://imgur.com/a/EDNc2nv
For 352 formation where my starting trio will consist of TAA, James and Zinchenko.
My reasoning is that in first 9 GWS Brighton play NEW, MUN, AVL, LIV and MCI, so except first 3 GWs (LUT, WHU, WOL) I might not even start him with the the other 3 options. 5th is a 4.0 fodder.

I would prefer not to rely on later transfer (e.g. after GW3) with pricing risk.

I don't want to kill your idea and plan, but it does seem like a waste of a bench boost chip to me. If I played it, I would go for a totally different team and captain.

For starters, do you really expect Chelsea to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool? That would be one of the biggest GW1 surprises I can imagine. Brentford's away trip won't be easy for Spurs, especially if Kane goes to Bayern before the season starts. Another question is, why would you only have one Arsenal player when they are playing against NFO at home? No BHA players when their opener is against Luton is another questionable decision.

I'm all for spreading the cash all across the team, but it depends on what you have planned for later. Would you use your WC straightaway, or are you still trying to build a long-term squad?

It's not a bad attempt; it's just not what I would go for. You can stick with it, and it may pay off. I'm not saying I'm right, and I won't make you a BB team, but I'm just giving you food for thought.

        Thanks for the message.

I think Chelsea vs Liverpool could be a goal-fest, i.e 3-3. But James or Chilwell will likely be involved in one of those goals, particularly James, who is better than Robertson on that side.

Brentford will be found out this season in my opinion. Tottenham will be desperate to get off to a flyer. The last thing a new manager wants is a loss to a mid-table team, with United the following week.

I think Brighton could be this year's West Ham - great in Europe but poor in the league. Plus, they've lost Colwill, Mac Allister & probably Caicedo - spine of the team has gone.

I'm trying to build a long term squad, due to the lack of Covid, World Cup etc. Neto would come off the bench to replace Pickford when Everton have tougher fixtures around GW8ish. Morris has nice home fixtures who can alternate with Tavernier. Ahmedhodžić is a goal threat as a 4.5m DEF.

Ahhh ok, I thought it was Daryl Hall from Hall and Oates. With the imminent world takeover by AI it will soon be Hal and Oates though.
