Dugout Discussion – Gameweek 38

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have one last chance for mini-league glory as the 2017/18 season comes to its conclusion this Sunday afternoon.

Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane, the top two players in our Captain Poll for Gameweek 38 and rivals for the Golden Boot, both start.

Three goals ahead of the Spurs striker, Salah seeks a tenth double-figure home haul as Liverpool welcome Brighton to Anfield.

Sadio Mane is passed fit to start for the Merseysiders, while Roberto Firmino and Dominic Solanke are also in the XI against a Seagulls’ side that they have already beaten 5-1 earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Kane collides with a Leicester defence that he’s scored five goals against in their previous two league meetings. However, owners of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Ben Davies are left disappointed as all three are named on the bench at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho is true to his word and makes numerous changes to the Man United teamsheet.

The likes of David De Gea and Chris Smalling are – as their manager suggested – both rested, though there’s no Anthony Martial in the squad to face Watford at Old Trafford, as the Frenchman misses out through injury.

In the blue half of Manchester, Gabriel Jesus is the man to miss out up front, with Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva all starting against a Southampton side with two clean sheets in 17 home matches. Ederson and Kyle Walker are named among the subs, while David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi miss out altogether at St Mary’s.

Arsene Wenger rolls out the big-hitters for his final match in charge of Arsenal, with Alexandre Lacazette flanked by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the trip to Huddersfield.

Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud are named on the Chelsea teamsheet at Newcastle but there’s no place for Marcos Alonso, who drops to the bench. Eight goals in nine against the Magpies makes Giroud a potentially big differential today.

The most transferred in player for Gameweek 38, Wilfried Zaha is again named up front by Roy Hodgson for Crystal Palace’s clash with West Brom. The Ivory Coast international has delivered 14 points in each of his last two at Selhurst Park.

Finally, Marko Arnautovic is another out-of-position starter who could have a big impact in the final standings.

The Austrian has ten goals and six assists since being moved up front in Gameweek 16 and could prove the difference as David Moyes looks to get one over former club Everton at the London Stadium.

My 7th season of fantasy football this year. All 7 in the top 200k, 6 in the top 100k, 5 in the top 30k, 4 in the top 10k and 3 in the top 5k. This year was the hairiest though, half way through the season was still doing nothing around the 500k mark - but finished strong in the top 10k!

I was about to use it on GW 37 but forgot, it was 7 points then, and in the last week that would have been 1 point, so no need to worry. But funny thing is that I haven't used it at all this season 😀

England could win the World Cup. But it will take humility and accepting that we need to park the bus against the better teams. We also need to identify who the team is built around. If it is Kane then every pther player needs to work to support Kane. If Sterling, Lingard etc. don't want to do that then they shouldn't be in the team.

To be honest it was coming. He had a nightmare defense of bailly christensen morgan and some other losers. This forced him to spend precious transfers and hits just fielding a playable defense. To be no 1 you almost have to make zero mistakes. That mistake cost him no 1.

Ah ye I'd agree but feel his pain. I've led my main cash league for quite a while now and was beaten today. Got in PVA thinking he'd be a nice differential and rival got him too. TC on Sterling and even getting Sterling and Kane in for Mahrez and Vardy has really hurt me. Real painful end to the season.

What's a better indicator of how well your season went? Overall Rank, or distance from first in terms of points?

Last season I finished just inside the Top 10K, 257 pts off the winner.

This season it looks like I'll be finishing near the Top 30K, 250 pts off the winner.

Exactly! If he had kept his damn shirt on, I would have won my h2h on overall points after 38 long weeks.

      17. Rank milestone comparison
        stat
          6 years, 2 days ago

A comparison of how much an achievement each milestone rank was this season compared to last:

          Last season:
          Total players by GW 38 = 4,503,345

          Top 100 = 0.0022%
          Top 1K = 0.022%
          Top 10K = 0.222%
          Top 25K = 0.555%
          Top 50K = 1.11%
          Top 100K = 2.221%

          This season:
          Total players by GW 38 = 5,910,135
          Top 100 = 0.0017%
          Top 1K = 0.017%
          Top 10K = 0.169%
          Top 25K = 0.423%
          Top 50K = 0.846%
          Top 100K = 1.692%

Finishing 10,000th in 16/17 would mean finishing above the same % of people as finishing 13,120th in 17/18.

No idea about top players in GW 1 in 16/17, but there are 3,880,223 players (or more accuratrely - positions) currently in the GW 1 league

It would be better to have a cut-off - like stop counting the total number of players after 2 or 3 weeks, so you are comparing yourself to teams that are genuinely competing for OR rather than for whatever reason a late entry is playing for.

Next season a new strategy for me?
I play a conservative risk free, hit adverse strategy each season - hence I get a similar result:

                  2013/14 2,432 3,989 (The Suarez era) (112pts in hits)
                  2014/15 2,224 5,690 (40pts in hits)
                  2015/16 2,216 29,790 (48pts in hits)
                  2016/17 2,252 28,917 (24pts in hits)
                  2017/18 2,275 27,444 (48pts in hits)

pretty consistent scores in recent times...

...I need to take the next step into the 10k - 15k range...

Yes. I keep a spreadsheet each season and each GW I record:

                      *OR
                      *Gross Score
                      *Net Score
                      *Points lost for hits
*Number of games in the GW
                      *Team Value
*Average GW score of FPL players
                      *Total points from top 10k.
                      *Running comparisons to last season.

I also track the Scout Picks score for each week + the GW's highest scoring EPL player.

Scout Picks this season scored 2140 (no Captain) and the average highest GW player scoured 16.92 pts (Total 643pts over 38 GWs.)

Is there a way to see how many people have played each year for the past 10 years? Would love to compare my percentage rank year on year.

Finished top 13k this year but feels like better achievement than top 10k rank from a few years ago.
