Sweden v South Korea: Budget punts and bench fodder

After the rip-roaring spectacle of Germany v Mexico yesterday afternoon, Group E’s other two teams – Sweden and South Korea – get their World Cup campaigns underway at 1pm in Nizhny Novgorod.

The match is likely to be of minimal interest to Fantasy managers, with no player on show owned by more than 3% of McDonald’s FIFA managers.

The omens aren’t particularly strong for a free-flowing exhibition of football or indeed a Fantasy points bonanza, though the fixture is surely now a must-win for both sides given Mexico’s shock victory yesterday.

Sweden haven’t won a FIFA-sanctioned match since their play-off first-leg victory over Italy last November and have scored on only two occasions in their subsequent seven fixtures.

South Korea have won only one of their last six friendly internationals, losing all three of their most recent meetings with European opposition. No Korean player scored on more than two occasions or registered over two assists in their ten AFC third round World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Despite us previously championing the causes of penalty-taking centre-back Andreas Granqvist (£5.0m) and creative full-backs Mikael Lustig (£5.5m) and Ludwig Augustinsson (£5.0m), it was Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) who Fantasy managers gambled on: the Swedish centre-half is owned by 3% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA but is only among the substitutes this afternoon.

The Swedes kept clean sheets in both of their June friendlies.

Midfielder Emil Forsberg (£7.5m), who scored on four occasions, supplied three assists and had more shots on goal than any other Swedish player in qualification, is the only other main Fantasy draw in Janne Andersson’s side. Marcus Berg (£8.0m), the scorer of eight goals in World Cup qualifying, has been largely overlooked by Fantasy managers.

All Korean players owned by 1% or more of McDonald’s FIFA managers are £4.0m-rated goalkeeper and defenders: only one of them – Park Joo-ho – starts today in Russia.

I see that South Korea use Son cutting in from the right side where as at Spurs he is usually used cutting in from the left where i also think he is more effective.

Is the right side favored by Son or is he just out there to accommodate another player?

      Probably targetting the left back.

Okay, confused by the commentators there.

Can someone clear up VAR for me.

Does the referee need to call for a decision to be reviewed, or does the VAR team communicate to him directly to advice him to stop the game to have a second look at an incident?

      The latter

But I think the ref can ask too - it's a 2-way communication. Ref always has the final decision though.

Interesting, I thought the referee had to request it.
I've been impressive with how it's been used, and the general standard of officials so far.

    Leicester are smashing the window,

Needed replacements for Huth and Simpson, got Evans and Pereira

Buying James Maddison now for their midfield

If they manage to hang onto Mahrez again I shall be checking the odds..

Don't think Mahrez will still be there come August. I'm surprised it's not more than just Man City trying to sign him though. Spurs and Arsenal would improve their first team with him

Leicester value him at around 70 million. No way anybody but Man city will touch him at that price.

In reality he'll go for £50m though and both can afford that

I highly doubt Mahrez will still be around, Puel will want to clean out the dressing room and not deal with his usual hijinks every transfer window. They've been linked with the likes of Shaqiri, T. Hazard, Ziyech, as replacements, but nothing very concrete thus far. Watch this space, Leicester have made some cracking business which I expect will continue

Ziyech? Looks like they've been playing too much Fantasy World Cup 😛

    What to do with this?

    Muslera Uzoho
    Varela Pavard Kimmich Meunier Danilo
    Coutinho JRod Sanchez Ziyach Meza
    Cavani Lukaku Mbappe

Tempted to WC as feel like Ronaldo is essential.

Other option is Mbappe > Costa?

      The Costa move looks decent.

I don't think anyone is essential. If Ronaldo was so essential we'd all have him from the start. He just happened to have 1 good game.
