Bournemouth’s FPL options in midfield and attack: an analysis

Sitting in sixth position and ahead even of the hipsters’ favourites, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bournemouth have been a welcome success story in Fantasy Premier League this season.

Just three top-flight teams have scored more goals than the Cherries (16), while only Manchester City (28) have created more big chances than Eddie Howe’s side (27) in the opening eight Gameweeks.

Like Wolves, all of their FPL assets are priced up in the budget-to-mid-price bracket, with not a single Bournemouth player currently costing more than £6.4m.

Their players are offering tremendous value for money: Ryan Fraser‘s (£6.0m) average of 8.0 FPL points per million (PPM) spent is the best among midfielders, while Callum Wilson (£6.4m) and Joshua King‘s (£6.4m) PPMs of 7.8 and 6.7 are the highest among FPL forwards.

No budget midfielder available for £5.0m or less has scored more points than David Brooks (£5.0m) this season, meanwhile.

It should be said, of course, that the Cherries have enjoyed a somewhat favourable start to the season. Howe’s troops have only met Chelsea of the “big six” sides and sterner tests await from Gameweek 11 onwards, when they face Manchester United (twice), Arsenal (h), Manchester City (a), Liverpool (h), Wolves (a) and Spurs (a) in the space of ten matches.

Doubling up on Bournemouth assets is probably a no-go for this run of fixtures, then, but given the value the Cherries are offering in FPL, there might be room for one of their attack-minded assets in our squads even during this tricky spell.

With that in mind, we have used this latest members’ piece to explore the Cherries’ four current options in midfield and attack. It should be noted, of course, that doubts remain over Fraser’s fitness given his withdrawal from the Scotland squad during this international break – although the last time that happened, the winger delivered an 18-point haul the very next Gameweek.

Bench him if short term. Take a -8 if he is out for 3 weeks or more.

I have identical thoughts with Robertson being jnvolved as a potential replacemment as well. Trippier is unikely to keep CS in upcoming fixtures and ocasional asist do not justify his price.

Maybe I’m kidding myself but I don’t consider: MUN, new, ARS, as terrible fixtures, especially as the home games are televised and will be billed as “Bournemouth’s chance to mix with the Top 6”.

If, and it’s a big if, Bournemouth win their next two (SOU, ful) then they will be hugely confident going into that MUN match.

That's a fair point, actually - all three have been shipping shots for fun this season, as well. GWs 14-20 are the more daunting fixtures (BHA and HUD apart).

yes BOU's terrible run is being overhyped. It's a definite fixture swing that needs to be accounted for but it will not necessarily void Wilson or Fraser. I own Rich and Mad and Wilson and Fraser and at the moment am planning to rotate Fraser out for the fixtures I don't like. I'm undecided on Wilson

what is the point in arranging a conspiracy and going to such ridiculous lengths of public deception to rest a player. IB 'injuries' happen when coaches wont release a player because of an 'injury', not very publicly as Salah's has

If you own both Fraser and King/Wilson. I feel like Fraser is the easier one to drop from the pair, the abundance of choice in that midfield bracket makes it easier.

It’s tricky I have both Wilson and Fraser, will definitely keep one when the fixtures stiffen. Fraser injuries are probably swaying me to swapping for Bernard. Will wait for a week or 2 to make a decision. I like Bournemouth attacking players. Their style of play is attacking no matter who the opponent.

Bournemouth's record against the Top 6 (MCI, MUN, CHE, ARS, LIV, TOT) since the start of the 2016/17 season:

    Home: P12 W2, D2, L8
    Away: P13 W1, D2, L10

They have played well against Arsenal at home (W1, D1).

Bournemouth's first 8 PL fixtures have been relatively kind as they have had a number of decisions go their way including being able to play against 10 man Leicester, Everton and Watford and having matches against Cardiff and West Ham.

Their next two PL fixtures are also relatively kind (SOT ful). Things will be trickier after then with only 3 of their next 10 fixtures against bottom half teams (new HUD BHA) and 5 against Top 6 teams (albeit one is against ARS, although still to be seen how Emery has changed Arsenal's away form - it wouldn't be difficult to improve it from under Wenger's latter years at the club)

    1. MTPockets
        5 years, 6 months ago

Do you know how many of those involved opposition clean sheets?
They don't have to win for say Fraser/Wilson to get pts.

They scored in 7 of their home games - mostly a consolation goal, but notable results are a 4-3 win against Liverpool, a 3-3 draw with Arsenal and a 2-1 win against Arsenal.

They scored in 3 of their away games, most notably a 3-0 win over Chelsea.

Top 6 are miles ahead of everyone (including Leicester, Everton and Wolves). Yes, they have the odd shock against them and Wenger let Arsenal decline recently (which Emery will hopefully halt), but they will still be thereabouts come the end if the season.

              MCI and LIV are elite.
              Sarri has improved CHE.
TOT are still decent, albeit not looking as threatening offensively.
ARS always had good home form, but need to buck up their ideas away from home.
MUN look most vulnerable, but even they were able to come back from 2-0 down to beat NEW 3-2.

              5 years, 6 months ago

Cheers I just had a look. MUN/ARS at home are among the better fixtures, but mostly in 16/17 season rather than last:

              16/17
              MCI - 0G H, 0G A
              MUN - 1G H, 1G A
              CHE - 1G H, 0G A
              ARS - 3G H, 1G A
              LIV - 4G H, 2G A
              TOT - 0G H, 0G A

              Total = 9G H, 4G A

              17/18
              MCI - 1G H, 0G A
              MUN - 0G H, 0G A
              CHE - 0G H, 3G A
              ARS - 2G H, 0G A
              LIV - 0G H, 0G A
              TOT - 1G H, 0G A

I would not expect Liverpool to slip up again like thy did in 16/17.

Do you think Emery will improve Arsenal defensively away from home? I think so, particularly as Emery is putting out the second team in the Europa League and Torreira is fully fit and starting games.

Wallcott to Rich (playing up top hopefully) could be an idea, also Ramsey to Maddison is another move you could make when you have FT.

I think it is ok to take the occasional hit if it is a long term transfer and not just for a couple of fixtures. But since you have a good starting 11 (all being well) is not needed.Just gradually switch the players you want over a few weeks as long as there are no fires to put out.

No problem with the 11 but I would not want the bench.
Ryan (injury) TAA (rotation) Fraser (injury) Ramsey (rotation) Walcott over Richa? Firmino (rotation) Hamer not playing, Hoj (2 pointer) WB (horrible fixtures) Holgate (rotation)

Look at it like that, you can have a disaster!

any Ideas here? have 1ft and 0m itb. Also have a WC

          Patricio — foster
Alonso Robbo Doherty shaw —- awb
Salah Maddison Richarlison — Stephens Camarasa
          Kun kane king

          Assuming salah is fit:
A: shaw >> dunk and next week do Stephens/Kane > hazard/Jimenez (-4). Would prefer to bring hazard in gw10 after the united match

B: shaw >> dunk and WC in gw10 to bring in hazard, arnie, Mitro, remove foster

          If salah is injured:
          C: Salah + Shaw >> Hazard + Mendy (-4)
          D: Salah + Stephens >> hazard + Knockaert (-4) and switch to 343
E: Take a punt (sterling?) and then WC in gw10 as planned to bring in hazard, arnie,Mitro, mane/Firmino possibly

I have been waiting for the Bournemouth write up.
It follows how I think and I was served a reminder about junior stanislas.
They have never appealed from a defender point of view outside Ake a couple of years ago so attack is all we should look at.
The one stat I have not seen is the amount of goals they score against the big guns.
If they lost 6 5 every game I would be happy as Larry.
Good article but can anyone assist with the goals?

I think they are the poor mans Liverpool. Great movement up front but old Pool dodgy defending. They will score goals but don't have Hendo Winaljdam Milner as hunters in midfield.

They don't. last year was littered with them blanking against many of the top teams, with a couple of wins (notably chelsea 0-3 and arsenal 2-1). They scored about 8 goals in the toughest 10 games, and 5 of those came against Chelsea/Arsenal. So 3 goals in 8 other games. Awful.

I think Fab for the save points, but Ryan is a good pick too. Pat looks like the best keeper at that price, but I think a Wolves defender is better to have, and I don't like to double up.

Bit of a mine field in my opinion. Dubravka has best fixtures but costs 5 mil. Depends what the rest of your defense is as personally I don’t want to double up on wolves for example. Maybe Fabianski as you are always going to pick up a few save points regardless of opponent

Is Ihenacho a better pick that Vardy in those nice Leicester fixtures?
Currently on 1 Goal and 4 Assists at 5.9m. Vardy doesn't brace and at 9m, i don't think he is good value.

            Thoughts?

            My current WC:

            Patricio
            Doherty Trent Robertson Mendy Alonso
            Salah Hazard Richarlison
            Aguero Mitrovic

            4m - Kenedy - Hojbjerg - 4.5m

            1m ITB.

Planning to roll out 5-3-2 for two weeks then bring in Kenedy while Doherty and Trent have a tough game - potentially bringing in Balbuena.

Could spend the 1m to upgrade the bench but don't think I'll ever need that third striker.

            Decent?

You could probably raise .5 by downgrading Ryan.

I think it's a massive risk going without Salah against some of the worst defences in the league.

You're convinced Mo will be available then? If he's confirmed fit he'll definitely be in my WC team but if there's any doubt at all I can't risk wasting 12.8m of my budget.

                why?

Sterling is facing worse defences and is actually playing well, but you don't think that's a massive risk.

Liverpool share out their points. He owns a Liverpool player. So far Salah has just been an out of form, total waste of 2-3 million

I like it, only thing I would change Is less money on keepers. Ederson and a 4m is what most with premium keepers do. I personally do not think they are worth the extra cash, a 4.5 rotation or a 4.5 and a 4m is what i would do, pocket the cash and maybe use it for wilson to Arnie in a few weeks. Fab/Ryan both good keepers for 4.5 with good fixtures.
