Wildcards change shape of top 10k FPL squads in Gameweek 9

Squads among the top 10,000 bracket of Fantasy Premier League managers changed a little for Gameweek 9.

The international break triggered 4.4% of Wildcards at that level of the overall rankings. This was more than double the figure from any of the previous three Gameweeks.

In this article, we will highlight the differences between the choices made by Wildcarders and the rest of managers, also discussing the effect of injury news during the break.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week.

This leads to a cumulative percentage of managers in the top 10k who already used the chip to 73.7%, a number that is particularly high considering we are only almost half-way through the first Wildcard usage window.

The overall cumulative percentage of Wildcarders is much lower, 35.4% and we could see significant changes in the top10k fabric if the Wildcards that are to be used in the next few weeks make a big difference.

Most Popular Players

Next, we look at the most common picks of the Gameweek 9 Wildcards vs the total picks of the top 10k.

Most of the Wildcard picks actually explain themselves. The two cheap goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski dominate the Wildcards selection.

In defense, the interest in the in-form Matt Doherty and the returning  Benjamin Mendy is the main focus point. While they are in 72.4%, 69.2% of Wildcard teams respectively, their ownership in the top 10k reside at just 50.4% and 26.1%.

Meanwhile, it seems like Marcos Alonso and Kieran Trippier are the main fall guys.

On the other hand, midfield and attack options look very similar. The only exception is the shy appearance  of Raheem Sterling in 39% of Wildcards while it was Ryan Fraser’s position in the rest of the top 10k.

Speaking of which, the Bournemouth man, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the most popular picks that had injuries over the international break.

While Fraser had 42.6% top 10k ownership last week, the number only slightly dropped to 41.8% indicating that only 0.8% managers decided to sell him this week based on his injury concerns.

However, not all who kept him actually had him in the starting XI.

In fact, Fraser’s percentage in started top 10k teams is only 33.85% meaning that around 8% of managers have him on the bench this week.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane switched places again for top 10k ownership. Salah now leads with 34.1% as opposed to 31.4% for Mane. The Egyptian has an even higher effective ownership since 6.7% of top 10k managers actually gave him the armband this week.

The other top captaincy choices this week are the very popular option of Sergio Aguero (67.2%) and Eden Hazard (7.2%). Other differential captains were Sterling (5.97%), Harry Kane (4.28%) and Alexandre Lacazette (3.5%).

It looks like so far this season, most of the obvious captaincy choices delivered and Aguero continued this pattern today.

Also, as the most owned players in the top 10k have been more or less the same the past few weeks, it can still be hard to beat the template with differential picks or captains. But this could all change.

Yeah, like i said on my other post a bit lower, am looking at getting Robbo AND Mendy for Taa and Tripp, but i need a third man for this. Hence a -8 (this week) or -4 next week. But am still hoping TAA gets back in the team. Too optimistic i guess.

In any case waiting one gw seems the more sensible option i guess.

The initial idea with my GW 6 WC was to have TAA and bring Robbo and Salah GW9 onwards. Salah is in the team now. But this TAA situation is complicating this plan.
Didn’t he paid a heavy price for one bad game against Napoli?
The liverpool defence with taa, vvd, gomez, robbo looked great until that game where the whole team was crap.

Thing is, I am looking at getting Robbo and Mendy for Tripier and TAA. But would need a Third man to do so, therefore a -8. Seems too blunt. Should I make no transfers this week and look at it next week, for a -4 (and having more info on the TAA situation)?

Did two rage transfers yesterday, TAA & Mané > Mendy & KDB. Had the exact funds to do it, and would have been priced out today anyway. Not optimal considering Liverpool and Man City's next fixtures, but I wanted to get early aboard the KDB-train, and it makes my GW10 line-up look like this:

    Patricio
    Alonso / Mendy / Trippier
Hazard / De Bruyne / Moura / Richarlison
    Agüero / Vardy / Mitrovic

    Hamer / Bennett / Wan-Bissaka / Billing

Next out are Lucas Moura and Alonso, which I got on my GW4 WC. Not a single offensive return from any of them so far.

Your team looks good, but not having Liverpool players will at best be nerve-wracking and worst, season ending.

Moura is next on my hit list, but I've at least had him from day 1 so got the United haul. Tough price point. Maddison or Ramsey look good, but you have Vardy...

I compared top 10 HOF's players from GW8 and GW9. Positive numbers indicates the number of player bought, negative numbers the number of players sold between the two gameweeks.

    3: Doherty
2: Aguero, Richarlison, Robertson, Sterling, Wilson
1: Fabianski, Hojberg, Jimenez, Lacazette, Mendy, Patricio, Ryan, Salah, Dubravka, Yedlin, Murphy, Schindler
0 (examples since they are so many): Alonso, Arnautovic, Ederson, Hazard, Ings, TAA, Zaha
-1 (examples since they are so many): Hennessey, King, Luiz, Maddison, Mané, Mitrovic, Son, Trippier, Walcott, Walker,
    -2: Fraser
    -3: None
    -4: Kane

    Most owned players (GW9):

    10: Richarlison, AWB
    9: Hazard
    8: Doherty, Aguero, Alonso
    6: Robertson, Salah
    5: Sterling, Wilson, Bennett, Maddison
    4: Hamer
3: Hojberg, Jimenez, Mendy, Patricio, TAA, Hennessey, Mitrovic, Fraser

    Noticeable: Lacazette (2), King (2), Trippier (2), Arnautovic (1!), Mané (1), Kane (1).

Interesting to some kind of trends among the most experienced FPL managers.

So I've sort of decided to use my WC when my back three MAD stop performing all together i.e one of them doesn't score more than 6 points at least for 2-3 GWs. The idea is to downgrade them to make up funds to upgrade attack.

    Thoughts?

    Mendy or alonso?
Have both at the moment but also have robin so need to drop one. Too much money in defense. Will probably bring Duffy for who I drop. Really think Alonso points are drying up and Mendy will out score him going forward.

There is no such thing as "too much money in defense". Just consider each player individually. Personally I think Robbo, Mendy and Alonso are close to essential from a value point of view. And then you can have other great options too like Doherty, Trippier etc

Honestly think you need balance in the team do transfers are easier. Too much money in one area makes that difficult.

If you are looking to maximise xG + xA then you would have the following players (Top 3 at each position)?

    Aguero (8.58)
    Wilson (8.27)
    Mitrovic (5.37) (NB: King = 5.51)

    Salah (8.31)
    Hazard (7.37)
    Dilva (6.07) (NB: Fraser = 5.17)

    Alonso (2.69)
    Robertson (2.52)
    Doherty (2.40) (NB: Mendy = 2.21)

Arnie to come in after next week. With those fixtures, barring injury , he is a must for me . It co-insides nicely with a couple of tough fixtures for Jimenez. So a straight swap has been my plan.

I sold for Kun, I reckon you have both?

I would sell for Laca or Mitro/Arnie to fund midfield

Although Kane has good underlying stats, the fixtures are not great and Spurs don't look their best atm

I sold Aguero for Kane before the Cardiff game and that fell flat on it's face.

Keep thinking Jesus is due a run in the City team too so that was putting me off Aguero - I may opt for someone like Lacazette now I think.

My biggest mistake of the season has been transfering Aguero to Kane 2weeks ago. Now I want to get Aguero back.

I will prob do Kane & Sterling to Aguero & Salah.

Imo Sterling might see his minutes reduced bcs of contract issue.

Seriously? If you bought him, why on earth are you selling? He needs to score about 5 goals a season to justify that price, but the annoying thing is that makes it almost completely unpredictable.

No other pressing issues (right now) so wondering if someone else may be worth considering a punt seeing as woeful Newcastle are.

Have 2fts, nil in the bank and not much idea of what to do with them. Wildcarded a couple of weeks ago, TAA has let me down badly as before I got him in he'd started every game. I'd like robbo or mendy ideally.

If you want Liverpool CS could sideways to Gomez?
Jonny seemed to take the fall yesterday and was hooked at HT. Bennet can cover Wolves CS & free up 0.3 for future tinkers.

          Good advice.

Or downgrade Maddison to someone like Fraser. That should allow you to upgrade TAA to Mendy/Robertson.

Albert Luque:-) What crap memories as a toon fan 🙂

I got burnt on TAA too, as I downgraded Robertson to him as part of the Kun->Kane move... I say stick for one more week, that also allows you to jump on Mendy for decent fix after Spurs
