Jimenez benched for Wolves’ trip to Newcastle as Neves returns

Newcastle United take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the only Premier League match to be contested on Sunday, with kick-off at St. James’ Park at 16:00 GMT.

After disappointing defeats in Gameweek 15, both clubs bounced back with positive performances and results in midweek: the Magpies gaining a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park and Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops recording their first win in two months with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

Interest from a Fantasy perspective is mostly in Wolves’ assets, with four of their squad boasting an FPL ownership of 10% or higher: Ryan Bennett (£4.2m), Matt Doherty (£5.0m), Ruben Neves (£5.0m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.1m).

The first three of those players take their places in Santo’s starting XI but there is bad news for owners of Jimenez, who – along with Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) and Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.3m) – is only among the substitutes this afternoon.

The Mexican striker was the third-most-bought FPL player of Gameweek 16 following his goal against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Adama Traore (£5.3m), Diogo Jota (£5.9m) and Helder Costa (£4.8m) make up the visitors’ front three on Tyneside.

No FPL defender has registered more shots on target than Doherty this season, but Wolves are without a clean sheet in the league since Gameweek 8.

Rafael Benitez has made three changes to his team, with Ciaran Clark (£4.5m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) and Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) replacing Javier Manquillo (£4.3m), Jacob Murphy (£4.8m) and the suspended Fabian Schar (£4.6m).

Kenedy (£4.9m) and Paul Dummett (£4.4m) have recovered from injury but are only among the substitutes.

Salomon Rondon (£5.8m), who has three goals in his last four starts, once again leads the line for the Magpies.

Jamaal Lascelles (£4.7m) is the most-owned Newcastle player in FPL, sitting in 3.2% of squads.

No Premier League club has lost on as many occasions at home (six) as the Magpies in 2018/19.

Newcastle United XI (3-4-3): Dubravka; Lascelles, Fernandez, Clark; Ritchie, Diame, Ki, Yedlin; Atsu, Perez, Rondon.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Rui Patrício; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Neves, Saïss, Vinagre; Hélder Costa, Diogo Jota, Traore.

Just realized the Jota is now 5.9m

    As perr @OfficialFPL

"SCOUT: He's on the scoresheet, but no #FPL player has fallen in value more than Diogo Jota this season.

Initially priced at £6.5m, he currently costs £5.9m #NEWWOL"

    Incredible drop.

Considering his position, he will probably go a run where anything more than 2-3pts will be hard to come by. Just like what has happened with Neves/Kante, so you have to be prepared.

Rondon looks like a season keeper. Think it's fairly evident that Pulis was holding him back playing him in a 10-0-0 formation.

By the way, where are the people that were on here on Friday afternoon encouraging Alonso owners to bench him for City and having a go at me when I told them to play him because you never know, Chelsea might shut out City?

To quote Delia, "where are you?!!"

        Look back to Fridays posts.

Seriously, I got stick for suggesting you don't bench a £7.1m defender regardless of how tough the fixture looks.

          • 6 Years

Agree with this. What about a 7m player in general? Would you ever bench a 7m midfielder or forward?

    2. Plymouth

Mark with Alonso on last bench. Looking purely at odds, which reflects all available information, it was the right call.

    3. MMN
      • 10 Years
      5 years, 4 months ago

I did, and plenty others. Ville Ronke is one of them.

The outcome of an event doesn't affect what the best decision was before the event occurred. City were highly likely to score and what was far more probable than not, didn't occur. The expected value was greater for the other 11 players who started. Mind you, having said that most people who benched him will get him auto subbing in due to so many no shows.

    4. FPL_Gyarados
      • 10 Years

I never understand benching premium defenders.
The whole point is that they could perform in any match. Like David Luiz this week. I'd never bench a Chelsea, Man City or Liverpool defender this year even when they are against each other. Some would stretch that to Tottenham and maybe Arsenal

    5. F_Ivanovic
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 4 months ago

It was the right decision for most people to bench him. Can't be results orientated just because Chelsea managed to keep a CS. Now, there were some people playing WB instead (or having him higher on bench) - like in the link you posted and I think Alonso was def the better pick there.

But playing Doherty instead was IMO correct. Just unlucky that's it not worked out.

Spurs with the great run: personally Kane perma, son, alli also options
