Captains

Captain Sensible – Liverpool and Manchester clubs central to armband debate

Fantasy Premier League managers are faced with another tricky call for the captaincy in Gameweek 29.

Ahead of yet another round of fixtures, it looks as if assets from Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool will be the key options.

As ever, we are here to help find the best candidates for the armband with some in-depth statistical analysis.

Captain Poll

Paul Pogba (£8.9m) looks set to win this week’s captain poll but not by a huge margin. At the time of writing, he has a 23% share of the vote ahead of Southampton’s visit to Old Trafford. The French midfielder has blanked in just one home game since Ole Gunnar Solskjae rook over.

Close behind him are Manchester City pair Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) who are neck-and-neck for second place on 17% each. Pep Guardiola’s men are travelling to Bournemouth in Gameweek 29, which will have raised interest in his Fantasy assets. Aguero looks the more dangerous but Sterling is the more likely to start.

Eden Hazard (£10.8m) makes an appearance in the top five for the first time in a while, ahead of Chelsea’s trip to now-managerless Fulham. The Belgian midfielder is not especially in any kind of form but the fixture is particularly appealing, the Cottagers still in possession of the worst defensive record in the league.

Mohamed Salah (£13.5m) completes the top five but has just 7% of the vote after blanking for the fourth time in his last five Premier League outings. Interestingly, he still has more backing than Sadio Mané (£9.7m), who has just 1.4% of the vote despite drastically outscoring him across the last six Gameweeks. That could mean that managers are largely put off by the fixture, an away trip to Everton in the latest edition of the Merseyside derby.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Raúl Jiménez (£6.9m) are the best of the rest with a 3.4% share each. Harry Kane (£12.4m) and Son Heung-min (£8.9m) have also picked up minimal support ahead of the north London derby with 2% each.

Morning all, Torn how to go, double on Liverpool attack or Defence.

    Current Team
    Alisson, Speroni
    Kola, Doherty, Digne, Schindler, WB
    Salah, Pogba, Anderson, Son, Barnes
    Aguero, Vardy, Jimenez.

    A)WB>TAA
    B)Son>Mane

Leaning towards TAA. But then would love the Liverpool attack double up Vs Fulham in 31

why don't you do a comparison with defender x plus mane or taa plus midfielder y and then see which one you prefer

Bit hard. As both WB & Son will be out my team before 31, so can't really compare. It's just if I go down the Double Attack or Double Defence route for Liverpool.

With Sterling suddenly in everyone’s teams, getting nervous my plan to hold FT this week is going to make me fall further behind the pack. With this team which would you do?

    1.6itb
    Fab
    Robbo, TAA, Doherty, Luiz
    Salah, Pogba (C), Son*, Jota*
    Kun, Jimi
    (Hamer) (Barnes, Pereira, JWP)

    A) Son, Jota > Sterling (C), Kante/ Hayden (-4)
    B) Save FT and hope Sterling doesn’t go crazy

Sterling will probably turn into Hazzard. Planning to only play with 9 or 10 in 31.

I’m not going to ignore bringing in players if they don’t play 31 if I think they can do well before hand.

Hi all, have a big dilemma in terms of when and whether to bring in a liverpool defender (essential i know!)

    Fabianski -- Button
Doherty • Pereira • Digne -- Lascelles Schindler
    Salah • Pogba • Sterling (c) • Rich --- Hayden
    King • Jimenez • Kun

    - I am planning to remove Kun, Sterling and one of Hayden / Schindler / Digne by gw31 to get 11 players for gw31. So

A: Digne >> TAA this gw
B: Save FT and reassess next gw. I could do Schindler >> TAA in gw31 when i downgrade Kun. Alternatively i could ignore pool defence and focus on upgrading Hayden >> Maddison which one could argue is a bigger upgrade then doing digne > TAA now.

    Toni Haapanen

    LTU -I.D. 2575352

    [FPL - current leader]

The Number one in the world has only the Bench Boost Chip left .

    17 Aug 20:15 Triple Captain Played GW2
    14 Sep 18:57 Wildcard Played GW5
    26 Oct 21:14 Free Hit Played GW10
    22 Feb 18:05 Wildcard Played GW27

    Legend .

Interesting to watch how he navigates the last 10 weeks. I am in the same boat albeit 300,013 places behind.

Up to now it shows it can be done and would be extremely interesting if he manages to stay there to the end.

Additionally, those of us who have but one BB (next to useless) chip left, there is no 'help' out there for us but at least we can watch closely how he gets past the next 7 weeks in particular..He got off to a good start and with using his chips he has stayed there. Very , very interesting.

He could be a FPL legend by the end of this

That's the typical negativity displayed by many people , including the scoutcast of which one member called those like Toni as 'poor souls'. There are many on here who would swap their left testicle to be where Toni is rather than be languishing in a hole nestling their comfy blanket (a few chips).

I'm getting at being without the chips and having to navigate the rest of the season without any help from anyone, as opposed to the multitudes who want/require spoon-feeding as to when and how they use their chips. I get your angle completely.

I admire people who play this game differently. Being disparaging about folks who play their chips in what historically has been the "right" way isn't very cool though..

The guy in first has used his chips very successfully, until this point, Unfortunately he's now a tiring fox being pursued by a massive pack of hounds who are all about to take their steroids.

Possibly, but he could go 'left field' take a different course to the hounds, pick a few points on the vista that the mutts don't see (as they are too busy listening to the masters with their loudhalers) and come away clutching a rabbit that he nicked from under their noses .

Well for a start the guy in #2 has a FH chip left in addition and is 1 point behind so that's a huge disadvantage to start with. I'm guessing he'll be at least 50 points behind by the end of GW32 if he doesn't pull ahead before then.

      1. andrewe63
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

There's already a shift in emphasis on GW31. I had the week down as a non-event weeks ago, and now the Gurus are proposing to use FH on GW 32.

GW31 centres around Liverpool in all probability so have 8 players could well be enough.

GW32 - why is it that brilliant? It's easily planned for. He'll have the same captain as most, have the same big hitters as most? If players use FH on 32 they wont be able to use TC. How far behind can he be really?

I admire your staying power. Got to be honest if I was at 300k with one chip left I'd have quit weeks ago. How do you keep motivated and what is your target? Are you still in with a chance in your mini-league?

      1. andrewe63
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

        That's a low blow.

I've had 8 straight arrows in a row. I'm playing it out because I want to play the rest of the season without the use of the chips.

Sounds like you might be a quitter lol.

        1. Bird Raymond
          • 12 Years
          5 years, 2 months ago

Wasn't having a go, just interested how you maintain motivation as I've found it hard to in that situation.

Yes I am a quitter, think I've quit in 3 of my 9 seasons! These days you are given the option of having the current season expunged from your records when you quit rather than losing your entire history.

Fair play, I wouldn't be worrying about 'expunging' any figures myself. There's something challenging about digging in when things are tough. I think its that aspect that draws me to the fortune of the FPL leader.

    So for me its between:
    A) Hazard
    B) Pogba

Any reason why Hazard wont score? I think he scores when he wants, and London derby is a great game for him, hardly an away game.

Pogba can haul, but the worrying thing for me is the absense of Matic, or is it really a problem? Saints fan, can you confirm, are your team going to park the bus at Old trafford or play deep defensive line? If so then Pogba is the one to go

Two goals and an assist in his last eight matches doesn't bode well for me. Hazard's fixture is appealing, but still a gamble imo. Would you captain Sterling if you brought him in? Might be worth a -4 depending on who you bring in.

What would you do chaps. 2FT:

    A) Sane and Digne out – Sterling and Bedenerak In
    B) Rashford, Sane, Digne out – Aguero, Hayden, Luiz in (-4)
    C) Rashford, Sane, Digne out – Aguero, Maddison, Diop in (-4)

    Thanks!

Bednarek is not worth it. Poor fixtures and blanks GW31. Aguero may be rested or have his minutes limited this weekend. Hayden is decent shout. Maddison and Diop may be fruitful.

Tough call, but C. Depending on your bench, it might be worth keeping Rashford if you didn't ditch him last game week.

Was set on Pogba captain but personally can't look past Hazard this week. Fulham are dreadful.

Probably be one of those 'give it your all lads and even if you're 5 down, never give up because miracles can happen' type managers.

Craven cottage is a tight pitch, if he is one of those and the players knuckle down - I reckon it could be damage limitation 1-0 or 2-1 to be honest.

Been looking at Sterlings away form and it isn’t that good. 22 points in the last 7 away games. That’s pretty much 3 points a game. Think i’ll Stick with Pogba

      Loves playing Bournemouth though.

Have a sneaky feeling City might struggle a bit tomorrow. Bournemouth have done quite well at home this season.

0.1 short of doing Auba > Kun.

Auba & Son > Sterling & Vardy for a -4 hit? Or is it too soon to get Vardy?

Would you play Rondon or Anderson this GW?

When did Fanderson last do anything? Rondon is a good player in an improving team. I'd go Rondon.
