Does switch to striker role improve Sterling’s appeal?

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) could line up as a centre-forward for Manchester in Gameweek 1 and in the early matches of 2019/20.

With Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) unlikely to be back in pre-season in time to fully prepare for the campaign ahead, the England international has now spearheaded Pep Guardiola’s attack in three friendlies.

Sterling operating in such an advanced role has caused plenty of excitement in the Fantasy community, altering the nature of comparisons between him and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m).

This article serves as a double-up on this interesting new development, covering Manchester City’s latest match as a Scout Notes, whilst also using Members data to assess Sterling’s capabilities as a centre-forward.

Kitchee FC 1-6 Manchester City

Sterling in action for Manchster City against Kitchee

Goals: David Silva (£7.5m), Leroy Sané x2 (£9.5m), Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), Nabil Touaizi, José Ángel Pozo

Assists: Sterling x2, Ilkay Gündogan (£5.5m), Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m), Adria Bernabe

Sterling was at the very heart of Manchester City’s attacking threat as they thrashed Hong Kong outfit Kitchee SC on Wednesday.

The central role allowed him to play a pivotal part in the intricate pass and move play, so it is no surprise that Sterling came away from the latest pre-season friendly with three attacking returns.

He hit the bar with a first-time effort early on, set-up David Silva (£7.5m) for the opener, fired a beautiful effort into the top corner for 3-0 and it was his saved shot that allowed Leroy Sané (£9.5m) to get on the score sheet too.

However, it is hard to read too much into this result given the gulf in class between Manchester City and Kitchee SC.

It would be easy to argue that the 0-0 draw with Wolves last week would be of a better use for assessing Sterling’s centre-forward capabilities.

In that match, Manchester City were quite sluggish and spurned plenty of chances.

Sterling himself started that match brightly but, after missing a penalty, was less involved.

That said, he also led the line for 45 minutes against West Ham three days before that and scored twice, so his time up-front is producing somewhat mixed results so far.

It’s early days in pre-season, of course, and there is plenty of time for Sterling to impress in the centre-forward position against better opposition.

Thankfully, we have the Community Shield coming up to act as a true test of what Sterling is capable of in a different role.

That pits Manchester City against Premier League runners-up Liverpool in a match that both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to win – which should see the strongest possible line-ups deployed.

What does the data say about Sterling as a centre-forward?

Sané scored twice for Manchester City in their big win over Kitchee

Sterling’s central role during pre-season is proving to be good news for Sané and Bernardo Silva as increased competition on the attacking flanks shores up their place in the team.

As things stand, only Sterling has been involved in more goals this summer than Sané, despite speculation that he might leave the club.

De Bruyne continues to be involved in the goals too, registering an assist for Sané’s second against Kitchee.

While there had been talk of Sterling’s move into the middle, media reports surfaced this week that the Belgian has been asked to play a deeper midfield role.

De Bruyne did not look especially reserved or conservative in his play against the Hong Kong side, continuing to demonstrate his creative credentials.

However, as already mentioned, it is hard to know how much to read into this result. It is possible that the low quality of opposition was what pardoned de Bruyne from having to drop deep.

Again, this is something to look out for in the Community Shield final next month.

The only other Fantasy talking point concerns the defence as managers hope to work out who Pep Guardiola’s preferred full-backs are.

Kyle Walker (£6.0m) remains relatively nailed-on for the right-back berth, but the other flank is still very much in the air.

After three pre-season matches, Angeliño (£5.0m) has started at left-back twice but is currently ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) on minutes by 136 to 134 – so it is still very much up in the air.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Bravo; Angeliño (Zinchenko 46′), Laporte (Dionkou 64′), Stones (Harwood-Bellis 72′), Walker (Danilo 64′); de Bruyne (Doyle 64′), D Silva (Rodri 46′), Gündogan (Foden 72′); Sané (Pozo 72′), Sterling (Touaizi 72′), B Silva (Bernabe 64′).

Does anyone else think sterling up top makes sane a great shout for the first few games. His points per game last year were excellent but obviously was a big rotation risk. Without aguerro and Jesus surely he's a nailed starter

Sane is a great player and fpl asset...when he plays.

Attitude seems to be a thing that has been highlighted domestically and internationally. He could be an interesting shout early in the season, but bear in mind that Europe’s transfer window is later then ours so Sane could still down tools or get sold.

It’s strange, I think I prefer sterling ghosting in from out wide with a true centre forward detracting away from him.

With city in the league I just don’t think teams give them that much space (unlike Arsenal). Interesting read though.

Speaking as a Kopite and match goer and this comment will come across abit biased but I honestly didn't see him coming to us in the first place we can't guarantee him playing time and would be playing musical chairs with the front 3 we wouldn't spend £50+ mill for him to rotate from the bench with them long term it would be a waste of money and he would lack gametime Klopp knows this hope he smashes it in Italy though

I KNOW I'm getting something wrong because I cannot be the only one right and you all wrong, but I can't get my head around Wilson being worth 1.5 more than King. I look at stats, I like at points on previous seasons, and can't see it.

one of those 3 seasons, Wilson was out for 6 months.
also in Howe's formation 4411 King is at risk of rotation with Solanke and Brooks vying for that second striker spot.
Wilson more nailed, and what others said.

          1. JohnnyMagrinho
              4 years, 9 months ago

Using injuries as a way to say stats are skewed is just slewing reality. PPG is so misleading. If the player isn't available to play, he's not worth the money...

Total points scored is more valuable to look at. People saying Coleman over Digne for example, just because he outscored him in 2019. That's a very shruggable statistic if you want to use logic in making decisions.

King all about the pens and general involvement, good as a long term option but not explosive. Wilson is the predator finisher and involved in a good 50% of Bournemouth’s goals along with Fraser. If he stays fit he will be worth the 1.5m. Depends if you want long term or short term gains imo....

If I wasn’t allowed to make changes all season then I would agree on king over Wilson at 1.5. However I believe Wilson is more likely to haul and I want the best chance of big points for those opening fixtures. In an ideal world he’s gone GW3 for me.

Not excited about either myself, but I think the view is that King doesn't contribute a whole lot other than penalties whereas Wilson does everything, assists as many as he scores and is maybe more consistent and sustainable.
I was only on King for the first few easy GWs so consistency wasn't important to me, but I've ditched any and every BOU player now.

Last season King scored 4 goals in open play in 28 matches when Wilson was on the field. Then 3 in 7 when he wasn’t. Give a game or two. Bournemouth also got more than their fair share of pens.

King in only if Wilson injured or you believe VAR changes everything.

Don't like it, but honest to God, that's how I managed to get Sterling in. I was with KDB all along, but that scares me.

I would get Kane instead of Vardy by downgrading any one of King/Fraser and Boly

Just feel Wolves might not be watertight with EL and tricky fixtures.

I like it! and I’ve been toying with Boly too. Still a great option at 5.0 and if none of the Chelsea or spurs boys look nailed on I may well pick him too!

          Not really template at all

No double Liverpool defence. No Mo. Rich and Siggy and Digne. AWB too.

Interesting team. I rather like it.

Think Shaw is more likely FPL asset and not a King fan. But if Everton go well could be great.

True, the combo isn't template, but I've seen the names in a thousand RMTs today.
Actually the double-Toffee midfield is a bit weird.

AWB is making a comeback here. Don’t quite get it but I haven’t watched any united games. For me he’d need to be showing a lot in attack. Those fixtures are very average.

Struggle to see how you can answer this with such conviction.

With the right fixtures he could be.

      From BBC Sport...

"United forward Anthony Martial looks a player reborn on this trip.

From being a player who some suspected would not respond to Solskjaer's harder pre-season training regime, the France international has been electric at times."

Thoughts from anyone that's watched the Utd games? Rashford and Martial have been rotating at striker haven't they? Think there's any chance they could both start the opening game with Rashford LW and Martial central instead of the opposite?

Based on talent alone Martial should be starting every single match as long as he doesnt become lazy and jaded like last season.

Anyone else see a high selected by % as a disincentive?

Seems logical that these players are most likely to drop in value.

Not the ones like Salah, but the non-playing ones like Button and Kelly could drop and yes, I avoid.

As seen last season FPL will protect highly owned popular players from dropping in price.
