Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 29?

The transformation of Gameweek 29 into a Double Gameweek has added further complication to the latest captaincy debate.

With the focus previously on Liverpool, Fantasy Premier League managers have been forced to consider Arsenal and Manchester City options for the armband with each side playing twice.

We’ve got over the individual statistics for key candidates in recent weeks and compared them against the defences of their upcoming opponents to find the out who the best option is.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season or a monthly package can access it in full.

Captain Poll

The original Gameweek 29 captain poll

We effectively ran two captain polls ahead of Gameweek 29 as the Double prefix was not added until late on Tuesday night.

As you can see from the table above, it was Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) who took a comfortable lead when this was a simple single Gameweek, having delivered in each of his last four home matches in a row.

Sadio Mané (£12.4m) was also up there in third place with Bournemouth coming to Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) completing the Liverpool contingent in the top-five, which was rounded off by Jamie Vardy (£9.8m).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) fixture against West Ham was good enough for him to accrue 25.6% and claim second place, with three goals in his last two at home.

The new Double Gameweek 29 poll

However, the addition of Arsenal and Manchester City’s midweek meeting at the Etihad Stadium has proved enough to completely change the dynamic of the Double Gameweek 29 captaincy debate.

As you can see, Aubameyang has now stolen top spot, increasing his share by 24.2 percentage points now that he will be playing twice.

There was a similar boost for Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) as he rose from 1.8% backing to 20.1% and second place – although the Belgian is now an injury doubt.

Those shifts saw Salah drop to third place with a still-respectable 11.9% backing for the armband, while Alexander-Arnold remained stable in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Mané and Vardy dropped out as differential options with Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) taking their place but with no more than 3% support each.

No but you can see if they have taken hits and sometimes that can tell you the number of transfers made. Also you can look at his team from the previous game week and see how many he has changed

Good team. I'm wildcarding too and very similar. Mine is

      Pope, Krul
TAA, Robertson, Doherty, Aurier, C. Taylor
      Salah, Pepe, Doucoure, Saka, Cantwell
      Auba, Jimenez, Jota

Krul doesn't do clean sheets often but he might save some penalties for you. Nice plan you got there. Mine is: Auba to Wood for gw 31, Saka to Bruno gw 32 and then save the ft or spend the extra 2 mil somewhere

Norwich are actually defensively pretty sound. 3 cleansheets in their last 6 games.

They also have decent games on gw 34 (wat) and gw 37 (BUR) so the EVE home game could fall nicely for a double

Well yeah, if you look at the whole season they are bad. But if look at the last 6 games, they have massively improved. Plus they have decent fixtures coming up for those DGW

              Really?

              Last 6 games...

              • McCarthy - 2 clean sheets, 12 conceded, 15 saves.

              • Krul - 3 clean sheets, 6 conceded, 22 saves

Looking at Pope's games the only gameweeks i'd not play him are gw30 (mci) and gw35 (liv).

Krul has SOU (h) on gw30, WHU (h) on gw35.

McCarthy has nor (a) on gw30, mun (a) on gw35

DCL from 32 is the option

Will probably end up rolling FT in 31 and not getting Wood to complete my eleven. Those qfs could mean a lot of different things. Will have close to optimal ten in 31 anyway

I'd like to share an idea proposed on Reddit, by a user called FrimpongNgog. Would like to discuss with the community because I don't think it's all bad:

    FH38

    - All games start at the same time, so potential for multiple team leaks which is really helpful because last match of the season is rotation hell
    - Allows best chance at getting a full 11 out for GW38 which, again, is rotation hell, many of our DGW37 players may not start
    - Often a high scoring week as teams go all out attack, FH enables moving funds from defence to attack to target potential hauls, such as Lukaku scoring a hat trick against United
    - Got all information we would need on which teams have what left to play for, race for top 4 or relegation battle will likely go down to the wire
    - For those whose main aim is to win mini league, can bring in specific players to target rivals
    - For those with multiple chips left, could use BB and TC for GWs 34 and 37 instead
    - Finish on a high, got the whole summer to brag about it

Some of those points are from myself but otherwise credit to the Reddit user. Won't be doing it myself in all likelihood but what are people's thoughts?

IF i have enough DGW 37 players i might go with it.

Fair enough. Depending on how matched are arranged, 37 might be a better week than 34 and would share several of the pros of using in 38 I suppose.

Is this potential gw31 free hit team good enough to use the chip? - I will likely only own TAA, Doherty, Aurier, Salah and Jiménez entering the gw and will likely have two free transfers. But getting Mané will kill the team I have and like...

I have used my TC but still think I will just use the free hit chip in gw31. This strategy will me alow me to get the players I like and think will do well in gw 29 and 30 - and many of these players will have double gameweeks later anyway.

Absolutely love the chip strategy brought up by Pranil in the Scoutcast. Kuszer mentioned it too on here as well.
WC now with DGW29 and BGW31 in mind.
    FH34
    Build with FTs towards 37.

        BB/TC for the DGW 37
        Personally I've already used TC.

Dep3nds on your team. I have 11 players for GW31 and KDB & Auba for double, I have Zero need to do that

Ofc ofc. I have only 6 for 31, so its absolute peak for my team rn!

    To those who may know:

If you were on WC and could put a cheap Burnley defender in to get a body on the pitch for GW31, which would you go for??

Is this Taylor reliable as a cheaper option or better to stick with Mee/Tarky??

I'd go Taylor, but not a fan of Burnley defence for 31. Actually thinking that Watford would do very well and win that game, and they have about the same priced defenders.

If you already have Mee and Tarky you may as well stick if cash is not an issue

Not going to get Burnley defence for GW31 as I have Sarr. Might look at Burnley attack though.

Pope seems enough Burnley cover for me. Not much ceiling in any of their def.

    For GW31 which looks better?

    A)
    Keep Fernandes
    Barnes > Sarr
    Stevens > Saiss

    B)
    Keep Barnes
    Fernandes > Sarr
    Holgate/ Stevens > Doherty

Thanks bro. That was the plan. Just suddenly realised that Bruno’s fixtures look tasty and he’s clearly on better form than Barnes atm. But Doherty vs Saiss is a no brainer!

    A) Bobby & Maddison -- Auba & Sarr
    B) Bobby & Ings -- Auba & Jota

    For -4, already own Jiminez
