Scout Notes

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

We continue our more detailed Scout Notes of the Gameweek 2 action with a look at Arsenal v Chelsea.

ARSENAL 0-2 CHELSEA

  • Goals: Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Reece James (£5.5m)
  • Assists: James, Mason Mount (£7.5m)
  • Bonus: James x3, Lukaku x2, Edouard Mendy x1 (£6.0m)

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) scored and put in a dominant display as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 on Sunday.

The Belgian’s man-of-the-match performance earnt rave reviews, while Reece James (£5.5m) – who got the second goal – also impressed as a wing-back in Thomas Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

LUKAKU OFF THE MARK

Lukaku took just 15 minutes to get off the mark with the opening goal, sweeping home James’ delivery, and was unlucky not to add a second after a superb save from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

The 28-year-old bullied Arsenal’s defence all afternoon, as he gave Chelsea a focal point up top and the clinical finisher that they have missed.

As a result, he collected two bonus points to return an eight-point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul in Gameweek 2.

After just one appearance, Lukaku already features amongst the top forwards for goal attempts, having attempted eight against the Gunners alone:

“What a start for Lukaku. In the beginning he struggled to touch the ball a little bit. Then he was very well integrated. He proved his value for the squad already. He linked really well with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz up front and gave something to the game that we did not have already.” – Thomas Tuchel

Lukaku deservedly grabbed the headlines, but this was a dominant team performance where others impressed, too.

JAMES IMPRESSES

James’ 18-point FPL haul – via a goal, assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus – was the biggest of his career to date.

Overall, he registered 42 final-third touches, more than any other player on the pitch, four goal attempts and two shots in the box, while his advanced role (no. 24 below) stood out, too:

Chelsea’s average position map v Arsenal

It’s now two clean sheets in two matches for Chelsea, though most FPL managers will surely be content to wait until Gameweek 7 before investing, given that their next four fixtures are Liverpool (a), Aston Villa (h), Tottenham Hotspur (a) and Manchester City (h).

ISSUES AT ARSENAL

While Arsenal’s opening day defeat at newly-promoted Brentford was perhaps unexpected, it has to be said that this result was on the cards.

Despite improving after the break, the Gunners 4-2-3-1 set-up looked devoid of width and left too much space for the likes of James to exploit.

However, it’s worth noting that the squad has been hit by Covid and injuries in the opening two weeks.

After the match, Mikel Arteta said:

“I don’t think the club in their history have faced something like this. We have to face the challenge. The league or table is not decided in August. The worst thing you can do is throw in the towel. We certainly are not going to do that. You have to understand the situation we have. We are missing nine players, and it is difficult. It is not just nine players – they are some big, big players.”

Worringly, Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) also limped off after 66 minutes with his side losing.

“They had to limp off. KT had an issue with his quad and Gabi (Martinelli) was cramping.”

It doesn’t get any easier for Arsenal, as their next Premier League game sees them make the trip to reigning champions Manchester City, though their fixtures do improve from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Cedric, Holding, Mari, Tierney (Tavares 66), Lokonga, Xhaka, Smith Rowe, Saka (Aubameyang 61), Pepe, Martinelli (Balogun 79)

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Kovacic (Kante 72), Alonso, Mount (Ziyech 82), Havertz (Werner 90), Lukaku

    What do you reckon;

    Opinions please;

I've got 2mil ITB (just culled Buendia for a 4.5)

    A) Keep Ings + Toney
    B) Ings + DCL
    C) Toney + DCL

Toney has better fixtures than Ings but I deem him off-form, stats wise he's apparently been decent but I've not been in the country to see the games so can't say for sure.

I'd be getting rid of Ings after next GW regardless.

DCL I feel is a must against Brighton due to their aerial issues. It leaves me with 1ITB for the IB but I'm okay with that.

B, but I'm not sure Brighton have huge aerial issues. Tough game, but DCL looks a great pick.

89 all out - seems silly to be making any moves. Thoughts here with 1 ft & 1 itb? Shall I hold?

    Bachmann
    TAA Shaw Tsimikas
    Salah Son Greenwood Mahrez Benrahma
    Antonio Ings

As long as Mahrez plays then you will have 11 players, so should be able to hold

Stick with this plan. No midfielders appeal at 8-10 so unsure what to do with Mahrez as you already have Son

Like 17 other managers out there, I don't have either Benrahma or Antonio. Have I missed the party or does it make sense bringing them in, especially Antonio, with the amount of fixtures coming up? Torn. Like I thought Antonio's hamstring was going to be by now! =/ He's played so well but should I just DCL?

      Definitely Antonio for now

The worry I'd have jumping on now is impact of internationals (Benrahma possibly missing GW4, Antonio playing for Jamaica) especially for Antonio's fitness, he didn't often last much more than 3 or 4 games in a row last season. But good fixture next week and decent run after that.

    Same topic as most....

    Sanchez
    TAA / Shaw / Coufal
    Salah / Fernandes / Barnes* / Benrahma
    Ings / Antonio / Toney

    Steele // Duffy / Brownhill / Tsimikas*

Made a hasty White > Duffy move last night, urged on in part by the price changes (think I'll need every penny for eventual WC). I do have Tsimikas, but he'll least hold value for a GW or so. After watching Leicester & Barnes tonight I'm really not confident on holding for that fixture. Even if I do, I know I don't want him after NOR. So, sell Barnes?

My ideal pick is Raphinha. BUR is a great fixture. It's just the potential isolation. Team -can- survive without him (ideally Duffy plays as long as possible, but even then). Probably drops in price but I will still want him for following fixtures. But, should I be considering:

    A) Raphinha
    B) Greenwood
    C) Mount
    D) Sarr
    E) Someone else (who?)

Ridiculous I even have a potential plan, but it looks okay. Not set in stone, but rough plan...

    GW2 > GW3: Barnes > Raphinha(?)
    GW3 > GW4: Ings > DCL
    GW4 > GW5: [Save FT or Tsimikas > ???]
    GW5 > GW6: [Save FT or Tsimikas > ???]
    GW6 > GW7: Toney/Fernandes > Lukaku/~8.9m (United fixture swing)

Have the same issue. White is 97.3 again, and Barnes 97.6 but I don't want to be in a situation with possible Greenwood rotation and Benrahma and Raphinha missing because of a 0.1 drop. (I would be doing Barnes to Raphinha if he can't go and already have Benrahma and Greenwood)

Always planned on WC after GW3 to make as much TV as possible over the 2 week break and transfer window closing...

Have exact money to get this team:

    Sanchez
    TAA, Dier, Ayling
    Salah, Bruno, Grealish, Jota, Benrahma
    Ings, Antonio

    Steele, White, Amarty, Obafemi

I have to pull the trigger tonight don't I...?

Man City not allowing Ederson or Jesus go to Brazil during the IB.

    https://twitter.com/City_Xtra/status/1429920892398837766?s=19

Liverpool will follow suit with Alisson, Fabinho & Firmino. Can't see Leeds letting Raphinha go in that case either...

Imagine the vast majority, if not all, players set to play a game in a 'red' country won't be going away over the IB. There may be a few cases like Salah, who might play a game if its not a 'red' country.

That's what I'm hoping with Raphinha. Would he even start for Brazil in the IB? (I guess if he wants to go to stake his claim sure - but he's so vital for Leeds).

Antonio & Benrahma too but will ignore those for now 😀

No they can't. it is whether they can just get a test on return and not quarantine for 10 days, thus missing GW5. They will miss GW4 unless they come home early

I am just stating the rules as they stand today. It is even in that tweet above

#ManCity will prevent Ederson and Gabriel Jesus from joining the Brazil squad, unless authorities can find a solution whereby both players would not have to quarantine for ten days in a hotel upon their return to the UK.

It does not say Man City are trying to stop them playing, but will if they have to quarantine for 10 days

    Sanchez - Foster
    Shaw - Tsimikas - Cresswell - Amartey - White

Switch to 3-5-2. Bissouma to Benrahma and Toney to 4.5 forward. Only issue you have is defence so better option might be to get third playing defender as we don’t know if Amartey Tsimikas will start and White out. Perhaps White to Ayling

True but not like big transfers haven't gone to the last day before. I suspect he'll stay too (I guessed correctly he wouldn't be involved against City and that he'd be on the bench and appear v Wolves and just reintegrate from there as it just made sense to me), but just can never know. Levy is spending a lot of money for someone that's normally so reluctant to do so

If he's staying or thinks he is then I can't see any reason for him not to, he might not be fully match fit but keeps himself well and he can only get match fitness by playing anyway. If something happens in the next few days and it's on the table again I'd say he won't, but only if Spurs intend to take it. But at this stage I'd expect if City will go again it'll be last minute. Mind I saw Gary Neville saying ManUtd should make a move if City won't offer what Levy wants!

This is old, there was an update today that clubs can veto their players leaving.

No I think he'll survive. He's at 97% with not a huge amount of time left. Think transfers will be focused around midfielders and forwards.

I've just based my transfer of it so it's not failed me in a good few years.

I read White didn't drop when he looked certain to, he did get flagged in the game which mitigated it, but yeah. I used it religiously in seasons where I was chasing price swings.

Yeah BB in GW1. It hauled me 12 points which was poor but it actually saved me 13 points on the pitch due to alternative picks I'd have made. My logic was that with the high prices this year, I needed to focus on a smaller squad rather than 15 players.

Bit of a different strategy than last.

Re. Captain, I think the two West Ham boys have brought themselves into contention which is a bit annoying as I was looking at Antonio prior to this week. Bruno vs Antonio for me now.

Yeah just had a look at your link. Nice position to be in.
Mentally quite tough as you'll get a lot of red arrows in a row now I'd have thought even if you beat the average every week. Didn't have that problem when I did well, never higher than the last two weeks!
I think I'll end up playing 'safe' with Bruno to be honest, flirting with the idea of Antonio seems fun right now but by Friday I reckon I'll have cooled off on it.

    A. Tsim>similar priced defender
    B. Gundo>Benramha
    C. Toney>6.5 or less
    Have 2 transfers.

Gonna get Raphinha as I already have Benrahma, upgrade defence a bit and wait to upgrade someplace else in the GW's to come. City's roulette is too much for me tbh.

Personally, I wouldn't want 3x 4.0 defenders that none of are nailed on to play. All 3 could easily lose their place and then you're a bit stuck.

Also, Alli doesn't excite yet... 1 shot in 2 games and that was a pen, that'll be shared with Son after hearing his interview.

Seems a desperate move to get Lukaku in now, when someone like DCL may match him.

I don't think you're giving yourself any flexibility to get on future price rises either.... you're essentially stuck with that team really at the price points?
