Scout Notes

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

We continue our more detailed Scout Notes of the Gameweek 2 action with a look at Arsenal v Chelsea.

ARSENAL 0-2 CHELSEA

  • Goals: Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Reece James (£5.5m)
  • Assists: James, Mason Mount (£7.5m)
  • Bonus: James x3, Lukaku x2, Edouard Mendy x1 (£6.0m)

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) scored and put in a dominant display as Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 on Sunday.

The Belgian’s man-of-the-match performance earnt rave reviews, while Reece James (£5.5m) – who got the second goal – also impressed as a wing-back in Thomas Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

LUKAKU OFF THE MARK

Lukaku took just 15 minutes to get off the mark with the opening goal, sweeping home James’ delivery, and was unlucky not to add a second after a superb save from Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

The 28-year-old bullied Arsenal’s defence all afternoon, as he gave Chelsea a focal point up top and the clinical finisher that they have missed.

As a result, he collected two bonus points to return an eight-point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul in Gameweek 2.

After just one appearance, Lukaku already features amongst the top forwards for goal attempts, having attempted eight against the Gunners alone:

“What a start for Lukaku. In the beginning he struggled to touch the ball a little bit. Then he was very well integrated. He proved his value for the squad already. He linked really well with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz up front and gave something to the game that we did not have already.” – Thomas Tuchel

Lukaku deservedly grabbed the headlines, but this was a dominant team performance where others impressed, too.

JAMES IMPRESSES

James’ 18-point FPL haul – via a goal, assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus – was the biggest of his career to date.

Overall, he registered 42 final-third touches, more than any other player on the pitch, four goal attempts and two shots in the box, while his advanced role (no. 24 below) stood out, too:

Chelsea’s average position map v Arsenal

It’s now two clean sheets in two matches for Chelsea, though most FPL managers will surely be content to wait until Gameweek 7 before investing, given that their next four fixtures are Liverpool (a), Aston Villa (h), Tottenham Hotspur (a) and Manchester City (h).

ISSUES AT ARSENAL

While Arsenal’s opening day defeat at newly-promoted Brentford was perhaps unexpected, it has to be said that this result was on the cards.

Despite improving after the break, the Gunners 4-2-3-1 set-up looked devoid of width and left too much space for the likes of James to exploit.

However, it’s worth noting that the squad has been hit by Covid and injuries in the opening two weeks.

After the match, Mikel Arteta said:

“I don’t think the club in their history have faced something like this. We have to face the challenge. The league or table is not decided in August. The worst thing you can do is throw in the towel. We certainly are not going to do that. You have to understand the situation we have. We are missing nine players, and it is difficult. It is not just nine players – they are some big, big players.”

Worringly, Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) also limped off after 66 minutes with his side losing.

“They had to limp off. KT had an issue with his quad and Gabi (Martinelli) was cramping.”

It doesn’t get any easier for Arsenal, as their next Premier League game sees them make the trip to reigning champions Manchester City, though their fixtures do improve from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Cedric, Holding, Mari, Tierney (Tavares 66), Lokonga, Xhaka, Smith Rowe, Saka (Aubameyang 61), Pepe, Martinelli (Balogun 79)

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Kovacic (Kante 72), Alonso, Mount (Ziyech 82), Havertz (Werner 90), Lukaku

Thinking of getting a Spurs defender, Taranga seems the more riskier out of Dier and him. Any thoughts?

Tanganga- higher ceiling, lower floor (potentially as low as losing his spot)

Diet- lower ceiling, higher floor (probably more nailed, but won’t give you goal contributions)

Spurs fan here, really hard to give advice. I think very short term Tanganga is the best of you just want any Spurs defender. For centre backs I can't tell you who are first choice pairing will be after the international break. Romero and Sanchez may have to isolate so Dier may be best bet. Reguilon probably best pick it he delivers attacking returns. Aurier, Doherty, Rodon, Davies could come into the team but can probably all be ignored.

What would you do here? (A) gives me a drastically better team but (B) or (C) might be the safer bet given Amartey’s uncertainty to start 1 more GW:

    Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - Tsimikas
    Salah - Bruno - Mahrez - Raphinha
    Ings - Antonio - Toney

    (Foster - Amartey - Brownhil - Omobamidele) - 0.0 ITB - 2 FT

    A) Mahrez + Toney -> Benrahma + DCL
    B) Mahrez + Tsimikas -> Benhrama + Livramento (Save cash for Ings + Raph -> Lukaku + Sarr (-4) the week after)
    C) Tsimikas -> Livramento and bank 1 FT

    Cheers!

Which spur def would you get if you can't afford Reguilon
    a) Tanganga
    b) Dier
    c) Sanchez

Tanaganga competing with Doherty and don't know Romero replaces Dier or Sanchez. Any suggestion?

Nope. He could easily haul. Yet it's away. Benrahma and Antonio are burning hot (in form) and have CP home.

Those with Benrahma have already won pts against us Barnes owners. I dont want to gamble with this and give them more TV advantage. Barnes has to go anyway after next week. And yes, it may backfire. But if those who have Barnes get a haul, it's not as big long term issue as Benrahma owners hauling.

I did it. Didn't like it, should have done earlier. No real difference with expected pts, but TV is important. Delaying that transfer might cost .3 TV and that is not worth the risk for me.

Benrahma's Algeria play the Burkina Faso in Morocco, which is currently on the 'amber' list. AFAIK, he'd need to be double jabbed to available when returning from there.

I was just thinking there about about this upcoming international break and the rules around "green, amber and red countries" and how it may affect some of the players in my team or transfer targets i have in my sights.

I see under "Amber list countries" different rules apply for people that chose to get vaccinated or not.
Then i remembered reading an article during the Euro's in the summer about a few players in the Belgium squad including Lukaku that were not too keen on the vaccines (which is their own business tbf) but i can't get it out of my head now that this could affect him for gw4?

I suppose they're other players in the same boat and we won't know for sure until gw4 comes around and see who's available.

My point is that just been on an "Amber list country" is no guarantee that a player will be available is it?

    What a nightmare. 🙁

    1. Rainer
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Returning from 'amber' country would be available once double jabbed, afaik Ogie. All the players choices etc but who's done and who's not is unknown.

I wont be surprised if there's just a blanket exception for 'elite athletes', once a negative test on return to the UK. Or rules are held in place and clubs don't let their employees go.

      1. Ógie
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I did hear the the PL were in negotiations trying to get an exception alright but even if that does happen i can't see the UK government granting it to players that chose not to get the jab Rainer.

I suppose the respective clubs will want a player in that situation to stay but with World Cup qualifiers involved you could see a right tug of war between club and country.

Yeah, you could be right. But Jota will be rotated and Salah is 12.5m. Trent and indeed Robbo or Van D, could easily score 200 points this season and are all 5m and counting, cheaper than Salah. I think Son and Bruno can still keep up with Salah's points total and are both cheaper.

there's one argument that you get double salah points when captaining him which would be a large portion of the season.
trent/robbo will always prove better value in points per mil.
If you think pool can get 16-20 CS then go for it
can always use your wc to bring salah back if needed

I don’t like any of the moves really. Find a way to get DCL?

Toney and Barnes to DCL and 5.4mid 🙁
        Why not Bamford instead DCL?

Could work. I’m just not convinced on Gray and Bamford.

Cresswell, Toney > Coufal, DCL -4

Literally the only way to get DCL. Or leave it till after internationals and do for free?

Yeah, don’t want like a 0.3 price swing against me.

Barnes, Toney, Shaw > Benrahma, DCL, Dier (-4) ?

    Sanchez - Steele
    TAA - Shaw - Ayling - White - Tsamikas
    Bruno - Salah - Greenwood - Barnes - Bissouma
    Ings - Antonio - Toney

Not sure about dier over shaw. Think that’s a big downgrade.

Do Barnes to Ben at first.

With Perez suspended, surely Leicester change formations? Could be a 2 up front, in which case Barnes could miss out

Could be. Rodgers would need Vest fit to play with Soy & Amartey. Nacho and even Daka can't be far away from a start.

could also be a 4-3-3 Barnes and Nacho starting as they're lacking goals right now

BHA are a sturdy defense, hold till next GW. Not to mention you may want the FTs over the international break.

      Oops

    So my current team is
    Bachmaan (Foster)
TAA - Shaw - Amarty (Veltman, Ayling)
Mahrez - Jota - Salah - Son (Bissouma)
    Antonio - Ings - Toney

I had 0 ITB and 2 free transfers.

So instead of sorting out my potentially non starting defence, what I've done is swapped Salah & Toney > Benrahma & DCL on a one week punt with a view to either wildcarding next week, or swapping Mahrez back to Salah with my 4.8mil currently sitting in my bank.

Which of these most accurately describe your thoughts on reading this?

    A) Wow, much genius, such outplay, your ML leaders should be terrified
    B) You got rid of Salah you fool, this is exactly the kind of tinkering that lets everyone catch up with you

Seems a reasonable early move after that game, and once the price starts to move others are obliged to row in. Those early gains will be crucial to picking up players when needed.
Just sorry I didn't buy him. But, did just fine without.
