European football returns to the free-to-play Sorare Academy

Sponsored by Sorare

After an enjoyable summer of MLS action, European football is back and we’ve got matches to pick from across three of the five big leagues this weekend.

This week, we’ve got some tips from a new guest blogger, Jonny, which should help you whether you’re playing our free-to-play game or dipping your toe into the main Sorare game.

After playing a range of other fantasy games for many years and a peak of a top 600 FPL finish, Jonny found Sorare in July 2020 and hasn’t looked back. You can find him on Twitter as @IndexGuru.

The Sorare Academy allows users to explore the Sorare platform and play with the most expensive players without paying the price – and to compete for Sorare prizes, with the top 15 players winning a limited card each week.

ENTER THE SORARE ACADEMY HERE

Tip 1: Look for peak scores

Making the top 15 of the Sorare Academy will take incredible scores; therefore, when looking at players to choose, you need to target players who can score 90+ points.

For example, Rafael Borré and Florian Tardieu have a very similar average per game, but for the Academy, I am going to be more likely to pick Tardieu if he has a good match.

Here’s why: if Borré has a good game, you will probably be limited to 70 points, but if Tardieu has one of his better games, I know it could reach the top scores of 80 to 100.

Tip 2: Use high-scoring partnerships

The term ‘stacking’ means using players from the same team in the same line-up. The logic is that you only need one result to work in your favour to get a good score. The difficulty is picking five players from that team who all get a decent return.

One option is to place a goalkeeper and defender from the same team in your line-up. If the team keeps a clean sheet, they both benefit – the keeper gets a 25-point boost and the defender receives 10 points.

Looking at Alexander Nubel and Benoit Badiashile in the example above, they hit their peak scores when Monaco kept a clean sheet. By combining these players, you would have started with 172 points and wouldn’t need to rely on another clean sheet.

Combining midfielders and attackers might not be as clear-cut as defenders and keepers as they don’t necessarily benefit from the same action, although one tactic could be to pick attackers and midfielders from teams you think will score lots of goals that week. If a team scores five goals, the chances are you will get several goals and assists among your attackers.

Tip 3: Use fixtures to your advantage

In a one-week contest like Sorare Academy, it is crucial to focus on the best players overall and on good players who also have good fixtures.

You might think that Christopher Nkunku is one of the best players to use, but in a game against Bayern Munich, he would not be the best pick. Similarly, you may not like Wolfsburg as a team, but they could be playing a newly promoted side who concede a lot of goals. This would make some Wolfsburg players a perfect pick for that week.

Aim for:

  • A team at the top of the league in good form playing a team in the lower half in poor form
  • Picking attackers who play teams that concede a lot of goals
  • Picking defenders and keepers who play against teams that don’t score a lot

Here are three fixtures you might consider for the Gameweek beginning 5th August:

1. Fulham vs Liverpool

After their Community Shield triumph, Liverpool faces newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage. Liverpool finished second in the league last year, scoring 94 goals and only conceding 26 goals in their 38 games last season. This makes them great options in attack and defence.

Conversely, when Fulham were last in the Premier League, they only scored 27 goals and conceded 53. With this in mind, you would assume that Liverpool will score several goals, and their defence should be strong enough to keep a clean sheet.

2. Clermont vs PSG

PSG finished the season as Ligue 1 champions and, like Liverpool, were both dominant in defence and attack. They scored 90 goals, which was eight more than the next best in the league. They also had the joint best defence in the league, only conceding 36 goals.

On the other hand, Clermont just avoided relegation while scoring 38 and conceding 69. The results were 6-1 and 4-0 in PSG’s favour when the two sides faced each other last season.

3. Lyon vs Ajaccio

Lyon are a solid attacking side and last season scored 66 goals, which was third best in the league. Their defence, on the other, concedes quite a few goals; therefore, I would focus mainly on their midfield and attack.

Ajaccio did, however, have a solid defensive record in Ligue 2, but it will be a big step up in their return to Ligue 1. When the two sides met in the 2021 Coupe de France, Lyon won the game 5-1.

Best of luck this Gameweek – don’t forget the deadline to pick your team is Friday at 11am!

I'll go 5-4-1 this year, and try to stick to my guns for longer than one GW, let's see how that shakes out..

    Ramsdale (Iversen)
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Dias, James
Salah (C), Son, BrunoG, Bailey (Neto)
    Mbeumo (Greenwood, Enciso)

Thinkin I might even BB, just to get it done, if not I'll shave off 1.0 by downgrading to 4.5s

Don't consider it great for a BB though due to fodder you have to have on bench.

Digne (bou, EVE) and trippier (NOF, bha) should just about cover for the first two and then I can move to him or Doherty if needed

Could be very good, but can also be injured in first game. He is not totally fit according to Conte, and never played in PL before. Its either full fire or a pooh IMO.
I dont like to pick players managers says are not totally fit.

            It will do nothing

He is based on many seasons of data an excellent finisher - similar level to Son etc

Its all about getting chances. He will score bucketloads, its all about trying to get it right when we think Pep will rest him

What i saw from Haaland was not building confidence. Bundesliga is a really bad league in terms of defensive level. Looked stressed and not comfortable in front of goal.
He will score, he plays in steam that guarantee you that.
But he will very likely get rested or injured. When Pep gets Foden in fit shape, Foden will be the one we want.

Repost as bottomed on last page.

Afternoon all. Could I get some constructive comments on this team pls:

        Ward (Iverson)
        Perisic, Dias, Robbo (Neco, Patterson)
        Bailey, Salah(C), KDB, Mount, Martinelli
        Darwin, Jesus (Archer)

        (0 ITB)

Question: KDB vs Son for GW1? Son has the better fixture but don’t want to pencil in a transfer and need a City attacker vs Bournemouth GW2.

If I go KDB then is Mount or Kulu the better 8m mid I start with?

I know Darwin isn’t a guaranteed starter vs Fulham but even a 30 min cameo could be devastating. He looked dynamite in the CS. Think I’m happy to give him a few GWs and reassess. Only a couple of transfers up to Kane / Haaland or down to an emerging fwd (eg. Wilson / Martial / Brennan, etc).

        Cheers!

I have Son. I plan to captain him. Plan is then to shift him to KDB/Mahrez/Foden, depending who looks best after the WHam game. Might end up sticking with Son, thus moving out Mount (who I also have) to Foden/Mahrez for GW2.

The thing that most strikes me as a worry about your team is the lack of TAA. I think Neto over Martinelli would be the way to afford the upgrade.

Yeah no Trent might be an issue but Rovno outscored him over the final third or so of last se son. Is the difference between the two that dramatic?

It might not be such an issue. Robbo for sure has his big games. Personally, I think age is on TAA's side, and he's thus an ascending asset. Personally, I have both.

I wonder if a punt on Sterling from the outset could be the better option. More aggressive. Utd might be improved defensively under Ten Haag and Dalot is quite attacking.

Can always correct with transfers / first WC if Sterling disappoints.

I think its a viable bet to go against Jesus for short term. I see a draw and a narrow win weeks 1-2. Betting Jesus wont go crazy - maybe 5-10 points over 2 weeks

I much prefer having these 3 captains in one team until week 3
            1 Salah
            2 Haaland
            3 Son

and having 2FT to get Saka and Jesus week 3 for Haaland and Bailey

Sure not a bad idea. Lots of good options. But unlikely he stays quiet imo.

No for sure , i think he may go something around 10 points and pretty much nobody will captain him so this risk is very low

I really like having the Son option week 3 and FT to move back to template

Template wont have a Spurs attacker this week - unless Kane and then will need to move to Haaland to cover him etc week 2

My FTs can then be more agressive (e.g Ars attacking triple up with Saka)

Is Buendia likely to leave Villa or will he be a threat for Bailey's minutes? Saw that he didn't play at all in their last friendly.

As much as the hype is behind Jesus/Haaland/Kane there hasn't been a season since playing this game when it wasn't about having powerful midfields

          Agreed

Im only on Haaland as my only striker and will likely move down to Jesus in week 3(And get Saka for Bailey with the Haaland cash in 2FT's)

3 premiums draft for short term captain targeting is very optimal short term with these raft of cheap starters (Ward / Doherty / Bailey and Andreas for Week 2 rotation)

          Ward Iverson
          James Cancelo TAA Perisic Doherty
Bailey Martinelli Son Salah ( Andreas)
          Haaland (Archer, Greenwood)

interesting. Yeah, I can't escape that along with Son and KDB's PPG far outweighing Kane even post Conte

I think Son will be the main CF with Kane having to drop to be creative

Very viable for some time with Son

I cant understand why others are not looking at the above draft and moving one of the 3 premiums (almost certainly Haaland for his run of new CRY ) out and then suddenly week 3 you have the template again and taken care of e.g Bailey issue for bad fixture swing

I've seen so many either premium forward or premium defence teams but i haven't seen many if any that have put much funds in midfield.

..and more recently, also high scored defenders for under 8m.

Yes but Haaland Kane are cheaper than their midfield counterparts for this reason now. And they're more reliable captain options.

        Cheers

Defence is Robbo, TAA, Cancelo, James, Neco.

If I downgrade James who would you pick? Or another 6.0 def

I was surprised that James had such a high overall ownership since nobody seems to own him here anymore. I will definitely go with him. If it does not work out I can always change to Perisic/Doherty/Arsenal/Trippier/etc.
