What a World Cup it has been! If you were completely tuned out of FPL, it’s been a much-needed break. Now, with the season about to resume, I figured it would be good to look back at the first 16 Gameweeks and get back into the groove.

Does the data from the first 16 Gameweeks matter?

This is the first question I asked myself. With such a long break, it’s almost like another pre-season for clubs. How they shape up might be quite different, especially early on when some players will be sharper than others.

I think it does matter – even though there may initially be some odd results and performances, we can expect teams who were attacking and defending well to continue in the same vein. There are some exceptions though, with injuries to key personnel like Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m).

So let’s dive into the data, starting with attack.

Season so far – Team attacks

I have sorted this table by minutes per expected goal (xG) due to an uneven number of matches played. The top five attacks in the league are quite clear – Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are the only teams to have accumulated a non-penalty expected goals (NPxG) tally of over 20.

Out of these, Man City and Spurs probably have upcoming Double Gameweeks so their players need to be prioritised, although it does depend on the FA Cup third-round tie between City and Chelsea.

Speaking of the west Londoners, their xG averages at roughly a goal per game, which is only marginally better than Nottingham Forest. ‘Potterball’ has not yet taken off after Thomas Tuchel’s departure and therefore Chelsea are a bit difficult to predict.

Assets for their Double Gameweek 19 are tricky to identify, particularly in attack given Graham Potter’s rotation and the strong displays of Christian Pulisic (£5.7m) and Hakim Ziyech (£5.5m) at the World Cup.

Arsenal’s data should arguably be taken with a sack of salt, as I believe Jesus was a major contributor to their style of play. He was constantly harassing defenders and creating opportunities, so there is no doubt in my mind that the Gunners are worse off without him.

I still expect them to do ok but think they’ll drop from second to sixth or seventh in this xG table during his absence.

Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers have a new manager in Julen Lopetegui, so some improvement is to be expected.

But my general thinking is that I want at least five or six attackers from the top teams in the above table.

Season so far – Team defences

Man City and Arsenal are far ahead when it comes to defensive numbers and my feeling is that at least two of my four defensive spots need dedicating to their assets. Kieran Trippier’s (£5.9m) credentials do not even need mentioning, he is a complete no-brainer.

One question did pop up in my mind though. With Arsenal’s defensive picks also having goal threat – particularly Gabriel (£5.2m) – is spending £7.4m on Joao Cancelo‘s poor attacking numbers worth it?

Why not just double up on the Gunners’ defence and spend that £2m elsewhere? It even opens up the option of having three City attackers.

Manchester United’s above data does not reflect their last six Gameweeks, where they were extremely frugal in terms of conceding big chances. Their assets are also on my radar, especially as last season caused lots of low initial prices for this time.

However, with both Lisandro Martinez (£4.5m) and Raphael Varane (£4.8m) unlikely to feature throughout the Christmas schedule, their backline becomes less appealing in the short term.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s data is inflated by the early Potter fixtures. Under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, they don’t instil much defensive confidence.

Speaking of data distortion, Leicester City’s first 15 matches have been split into two very different defensive spells. They had excellent numbers during the most recent eight Gameweeks, so the combination of Danny Ward (£4.1m) and Daniel Iversen (£3.9m) should definitely be under consideration.

Season so far – Player data

Conclusion

The purpose of this article was to bring both you and myself up to speed after the long six-week break. I will be sharing more thoughts and selection dilemmas next week, along with my initial draft, so until then I hope I have left you with some food for thought.

We discussed our initial thoughts on a recent episode of The FPL Wire which you can check out below.

See you next week!

Utd fan here. He’s a really good player. Fast, tricky, good with both feet. Possibly our main creative outlet. Could get his fair share of set pieces and penalties too.

Note of caution: we don’t get many penalties and if Mbappe comes then he could get them. On balance I’d say he’s still worth it though.

Don’t think Mbappe is leaving PSG anytime soon unless he’s desperate to play in the Europa League.

He’s the one who’s initiated the whole process and offered to take a pay cut to subsidise a bit of the transfer fee.

What are peoples houghts on mid priced forwards

Che Adams 6.4 - great fixtures. New manager?
Nketiah 6.5 - could be 1st choice but fixtures not that easy. Maybe martinelli up front?
Martial 6.7 - Great first 3 fixtures. Could he haul?
Scamacca 6.7 - Great fixtures after arsenal. What about Antonio?
Mitro 6.8 - Seems popular choice with DGW ahead
Wilson 7.4 - great potential. What about Isak?
Toney 7.4 - great player but tough fixtures

      Mitro and Toney for me.

However, I reckon Toney gets banned any day now.

Something tells me Che Adams will fire first 4.

I wish I could get him, but I’ve gone similar priced midfielders instead as they score more typically.

A stretch too far, I think.

Two main reasons for my conclusion:

      1. Walker - although considering the nature of the opposition, he could see plenty of minutes.

      2. The bench - Probably one player too weak, unless Bueno remains first choice.

In all honesty, considering the first 5, and considering his limited attacking threat and with Tomiyasu lurking, I don’t think Arsenal defence, thus White will be worth it.

That’s where I’d target some cash.

For example. Bueno > Mings and White > Botman could add that little extra balance.

This is assuming you’ve got White at his current price.

If I’ve got the maths wrong, I’d still work on that logic.

Even Luke Thomas at 4.2 could be good, but not ideal when you’ve got double Lei defence and you may want Maddison.

I have poor team value. Most other managers could upgrade their bench.

The thing about 4 premiums is that you have 4 cash cows and a lot of ways to release cash and upgrade another position if needed.

Yeah but it requires multiple moves (and probably hits) every time you want to spread the money around. Frankly, I don't like this team at all. I think the structure is going to get you into trouble with Christmas rotation. I would at least downgrade one premium, find a more balanced structure & strengthen the bench

It requires 2 moves, which isn't hard if you save a transfer after wildcard and then keep rolling over a free transfer each gameweek.

It sounds inflexible at first; but it actually allows you to get anyone.

Not sure having 4 expensive big guns on your squad will be cost effective. Think about points per million you are getting from the four big hitters in comparison to cheaper alternatives. Spending something like 48 million on just 4 players means your bench is very thin.
But good luck anyway. There is more than one way to play this game.

It's not a RMT. It's intended to get people to think about the FOUR MIUM. I thought there is no way you could get a decent team out with 4 premiums but it's actually not that hard (and I have lousy team value). It's worth considering.

      Yeah I’m not keen.

If you’ve gone Martinelli because the value tied up, I’d support it.

Apart from that I think there’s opportunities. Heck, if you bank on Spurs getting the double I’d be looking at Kulusevski over Saka for example.

Come on, if Ten Haag can’t handle Ronaldo, he’s not going to handle Mbappe lol.

United are offering Ronaldo a coaching position to teach Mbappe how to be humble and not greedy.

Well I'm struggling so need to add some spicy differentials:

    Guita
    Trippier - Gabriel - Akanji
    KDB - Bruno - Odegard - Kulu
    Haaland - Nunez - Adams

    Ward-Patterson-Castagne-Almiron

Tell me where I'm having a shocker

No "shockers" there really, but why is Almiron last on your bench? Guiata is ok but I think I'm moving on from him now. Akanji did seem like the most nailed City CB before the break, but are we really confident he'll start twice in the doubles?

    DeBruyne Foden Diaz Martinelli Almiron
    Haaland Kane 4.2

Your main differential is out for 3 months. Looks pretty good otherwise. I would downgrade one defender though

Or, depending on who your Diaz replacement is, you could maybe do something like Iversen & Botman - Pope & Patterson?

    Interesting article.
Tempted to change KDB to Salah, but would mean me 'downgrading' Martinelli to Odegaard.

Is it a downgrade though? Comparison tool suggests not!

Still a problem, yeah. It'll probably be harder to predict than with someone like James. But at least if he's in the naughty corner for a while or looks a doubt to start due to mins in previous game I could easily just bench him

The threat of a long ban for gambling activity means I'm not even looking at Toney. Like Darwin over Salah too, so very much A so far. But then, Mitrovic could easily outscore Kane in the first 3 GW

Good point on Toney. I assume we won't know until after the restart. And just noticed Mitrovic 1 card from a ban too

I'm seeing lots of different drafts. Starting to get my FPL brain engaged again.

    Leno Ward
    Cancelo Trippier Perisic Dalot Bueno
    KdB Rashford Martinelli Almiron Andreas
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

This is my first attempt. No Liverpool is a bit scary but since I'm not captaining them and no DGWs. Seems a fair compromise. KdB > Salah after the DGW.

Bueno is a mighty wise pick

Rashford in interesting but a lot of transfer talks around him and he is the kind of players to get easily affected by this.

I think these are the absolute perfect circumstances for Rashford. Strong WC performance, Ronaldo out of the picture, 6.7m mid. It's a punt I'm very keen on. Great first 3 fixtures too.

that's true. I'm leaning towards him too. The fact he is a MID compared to Martial FW makes him ever more appealing.
He also is an easy switch at his price tag

My only issues with Rashford are:
          A) Are Man Utd currently the kind of team who will put 3-4+ past these type of opponents, or just grind out a 1-0/2-0?
          B) Is Rashford really going to thrive against teams defending deep? Isn't he more effective with space to break into?

Rashford's only barriers are nailedness and confidence at the price point he is at.

I'd say both of those are pretty much dealt with at this point.

Don't you think Perisic will be due a break after 6x 90mins + 2x ET in less than 3 weeks? Even if not, he's been absolutely terrible to own (even in an effective rotation with Sessegnon). The occasional assist doesn't really make up for 1 CS in the last 11 games.

It’s the uncertainty of it all.

Based on the number of counts of alleged betting violations you would think he’s looking at a lengthy ban, but it’s a case of how long is it going to take before the FA reach a decision on it.

Until then he’s a good play in FPL for sure.

Haaland has kind of overshadowed him but he's on 12 goals in 16 games. He's been really good and has a DGW in 20 as well.

The pen miss doesn't factor into my decision making at all, nor does your tiresome vendetta. The fatigue that Conte highlighted before the WC does though, as well as Spurs' poor form before the break & the difficulty of their fixtures (DGW especially)

One has nothing to do with the other. Many great players miss a PK. You need to be a great player to be a PK taker to begin with
