The Community Round Up

In anticipation of the launch of further Fantasy games, community members have spent their time looking back to see what lessons they can learn from last season and continue to plot their strategies for the forthcoming season. As always, we also take time out to cast an eye over the community leagues and tournaments taking place this summer.

Hottest Topics

Sometimes the boundaries between fantasy football and art blur as The 3rd Turd has proved with this colourful look at player points accumulation over last season. The graph can be broken down by position, teams and individual players. Lots to take in and an amazing sight to behold.

Elsewhere,”uber debate” rumbles on, with those favouring an “uber cheap” defence as well as those looking at more expensive options, continuing to make impressive cases for their causes.

In Tommy We Trust has been flying the flag for the “ubers” and explaining about how the strategy can form part of a balanced side. Tommy has also been looking at three- way uber attacking options. While Daniel, who favours more investment in defence, arrived to rain on Tommy’s parade and look the pitfalls of going “uber”.

JCC is another cynic who has surfaced this week is; he has set about pouring scorn on those considering Michu as an option in 2013/14. There are quite simple other far better options, he argues.

Meanwhile The Parmtree has been gazing into his crystal ball to give a lengthy team by team analysis for the forthcoming season. This epic tome is in two parts, which can be seen here and here.

Our own hot topics have also been continuing and this week we asked to what extent fantasy football affects our mood and lives. We were surprised by how many admitted the psychological scars a bad Gameweek can leave.

Community Tournaments

FFS UEFA’s intriguing Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) game turned its attention to bids for strikers this week. Among the most successful teams, which are made up along Premier League club lines, were Aston Villa led by HVT, which welcomed Lionel Messi whilst Anorak‘s Spurs plotted the acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile, Chelsea owned by Declan acquired the deadly duo of Falcao and Rooney, with Everton proudly purchasing the services of Edinson Cavani under Saniul‘s guidance. Still leading the game are Fulham, led by PeppieandFelix. The deadline for Transfer Window 1 is Saturday 2359 HRS BST, where clubs will look to trade players amongst themselves. Anyone who would like to join can sign up here.

Midfielder, having his medical today and if passes will be offered a "multiple year" contract, whatever that is. They also wrote that Norwich are still talking to PSV about Toivonen.

He's a centre midfielder. Also had a fairly good showing in the under 21s this summer, coming of the bench to score twice.

    REPOST:

Might sound trivial BUT can FPL actually launch this season's game before all the home kits are officially unveiled?

As it stands, Arsenal, Newcastle, and West Brom haven't unveiled new home kits. (Apparently Arsenal's kit is remaining the same but I'm not certain on the other two).

I don't ever remember them starting with a previous season's kit to change it when the new kit is revealed. Then again I never really paid much attention to the kits on the game.

I'm pretty sure in the past they've launched the game prior to having all the kits confirmed.

In particular I remember the Man Utd kit changing pre season but after the game had launched.

Can fpl be broken down into player subcategories?
I was thinking about this and I think of you follOw a template like this you cannot go far wrong.
CHEAPOS: defence and gk mainly. One/two goalies should be cheap to be rotate or saved for great fixtures. In defence three /four CHEAPOS to rotate and maximize cs potential. Choose these in 10 week blocks of fixtures or so and swap them only when transfers are not needed elsewhere. Eg from last year- Demel, begovic- in the beginning turner
BIG HITTERS: defence gk again- big 4 type players with some attacking potential and/or nailed onness- ie zabaleta last year or vertonghen. Maximum three total in defence and goal
STAPLES: your essential midfield men and strikers who are owned by all and come up with steady scores. I think you want three or four in your team to keep a steady rank- eg Michu, bale, rvp last year
FLAIRS: these little rascals can set you apart and be the difference- especially in close mates leagues. TWo is probably enough- having twoany will obviously hurt you If things go wrong eg- Nolan gw38, Mirallas, jordi gomez 😉 these are te explosion boys
FILLERS: cheaper players for mid and attack to rotate who'll play and score steadily, the likes of Maloney are the banner bearers.

The tricky thing is obviously getting the balance, I personally made the mistake of letting Staples fly past me rather than just swallowing my pride and rebuying them.

It is a crap shoot to know which players will begin the season well. We can only do our best to estimate. To start the game, its all about selecting the squad which you can downgrade if necessary. I remember last season 6.5 was the magic number in midfield. There were plenty of options at that price or lower. It is essential that your squad has the flexibility to sell a player for another while using only 1 transfer. example....a player priced at 6.0 is more of a risk than a player priced at 7.0 because it will take you 2 transfers to substitute the "dud" 6.0. Hope i am making sense!

In a way yes they can, but such categories would be a lot more fluid than you've suggested. There have been cheap players offering attacking/ clean sheet potential in bigger teams, and 'flair' players can easily become staple buys if they hit a run of form.

It does pose an interesting question though. Are people more likely to stick with a faltering 'big hitter' if other people haven't jumped ship yet?

if he is classified as a midfielder he is the man to get for the 5th mid spot, but he is more of a winger/second striker so i don't think he will be tough but still if he gets enough gametime, he will be exciting to watch !!!

Both great ideas and thanks for the mention. I've toyed with the idea of a similar theme to the ownership idea but with price...10 mill and out...!!!..Should be an interesting way to go if i do it.It would obviously mean another back to front team though as all the best strikers will be out for me...and a few midfielders...If somebody makes a second team (which my Belgian team was) then it really should have some sort of theme or interest to be legitimate...

Only fair - I wouldn't have thought even thought to do a themed team let alone that particular one if you hadn't paved the way. Would be interesting to see how you got on without the likes of Bale, RVP and Aguero. If they where were to fail it could potentially give you an advantage over 95%+ of other people as I doubt many would be without them all.

I think my tactic for choosing defenders this year in FPL will be to select around 15 defenders of varying prices who I would consider in my team before the prices even come out. Once I see the prices I can judge which of the players are good value. Hopefully there will be around 5 which will be. Barring any seriously underpiced options I think that this tactic might come good for me.
Personally I would lean towards a cheaper defence until January WC too.

Point taken, they need some tougher opposition to get a better idea of swansea. Whilst Michu didnt score in the first 2 pre season games, he didnt appear at all in the 1st game and only for the second half of the 2nd, think he managed to grab an assist in that one.

Either way Michu is not going to be the bargain he was last year! (he's an 8.8m forward in the Sky game)

Defense is like offense - you get what you pay for.

Maybe rotate 2, even 3 ... but a five-man rotation will be chaos to predict and manage.

BTW, I'm not saying it *can't* work, only that IMO it is a tactic fraught with worry and disappointment.

Pork stew, with porcini mushrooms and chorizo. Quite complicated to balance, but the solution turned out to be Bortolotti beans.

And I'm not talking about any POOs.

Predicting the prices of 100 players (5 players per club).
'Kagawa' organised it a year ago, but since he doesn't seem to be arranging it this season, I'm ready to organise the competition, just want to make sure there is interest 🙂

You just have to click on their name and it will show if they're linked up. But I agree it would be nicer if it there was a badge like the 'member badge' next to the name that links to the user's FPL team.

Right ... it conceals whether they're linked by forcing you to go to their profile page rather than just seeing their username.

In a perfect world - admittedly it isn't - I would have the grav link to their profile and their name be a linked/unlinked hypertext, as it was.

This is largely important to me due to my elitism, mind.

In such cases I'm sure it is discussed and agreed. Surely not in terms of minutes per game, but on some level minutes are probably included (loan fee depending on it, recall from loan, future club partnership, etc.).

Spaniards are known to do good in England, so having good relationship with a club that has the best academy in Spain sound like a good idea.

    Pre-Price 100mil formations to consider...

Here's 3 very different strategies. Any others care to share?

FWIW I go for option 1. I'm not a top player but last year was my first serious crack at this game, and putting in the effort well worthwhile. Mini league wins were sweet. #hooked

    "Option 1" Cheap Rotating Defence

    4.5 4.5 or 5.0 4.0 (9mil max cheap keepers) - proven value position
    6.5 5.5 4.5 4.0 4.0 (3 cheap rotating defenders with 2 value guns)
    11.5 9.5 7.5 6.0 5.0
    13.0 9.0 5.0

"Option 2" Balanced (don't like it, as you can't fit guns in - aka Bale/RVP)
    5.5 4.5
    7.0 6.0 5.5 4.0 4.0
    10.5 8.5 8.0 6.5 4.5
    10.5 9.0 6.0

"Option 3" Gun Stikers (3 up front) No Bale but a lot of fire power

    4.5 4.0 (dirt cheap)
    6.5 5.5 4.0 4.0 4.0 (one strong defender. weak rotation)
    10.5 7.5 7.0 5.5 4.5
    13.0 10.5 9.0

I don't believe in Option 4 expensive defence...

tnx for sharing Parm. yours is a cheaper defence version of my "cheap defence" formation 🙂 i like that your 3rd striker is a 6.0 with that even cheaper defence. hope can find some value there now!

      I like option 1 too.

Then hope that the players you select around grow in value, so slowly but surely you can put more guns in the defensive area.

This worked well for my team last year.

Ended up with a team just over 108mill in value.

Ideally would like to fit them five into my GW1 side too. Perhaps Higuain not coming to Arsenal would save me a little money so I could upgrade a cheap midfielder. I'd get Carroll instead of Hig so I could then upgrade the 4.5 midfielder to Snodgrass.

Personally not a fan of having so many cheap options in my front 8, particularly before they've been proven to be good value (e.g Maloney last season)

not really. when prices come out you'll be spewing at what you can't afford. that's just a gun 3 defenders, what i would consider balanced for all 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 players... i.e. 90min bonus point attacking point defenders. those prices won't even buy you Luiz/Baines - Vertonghen - Rafael/Similar

so it's not THAT good a defence :S

Each article is filed under a different category. The Community Round Up articles show the hottest hot topics for the week.

The3rdTurd's post is mentioned in this weeks, but the link didn't work for me so I bumped it here.

You can see all the "Community" categories here:

        Hope that helps.
