Scout Report – Alvaro Negredo

City boss Manuel Pellegrini continued his summer of big-money buys yesterday by acquiring Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla. The 27-year-old arrives at the Etihad on a four-year contract for a fee initially believed to be in the region of £16m, with an extra £4m in add-ons. City’s third new signing of the close-season, following the purchase of Fernandinho and former Sevilla team mate Jesus Navas, the Negredo deal preceded the arrival of Stevan Jovetic as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his options up front

The History

A product of the Rayo Vallecano youth academy, Negredo racked up 14 goals in 15 appearances for the club’s B team in 2004/05 and, subsequently promoted to the senior side, notched once in 12 matches in the same season. Snapped up by Real Madrid in the summer of 2005, the forward spent two years at the Bernabeu but failed to make a single La Liga appearance – demoted to the B team, he notched 22 times in 65 matches before Almeria came calling in July 2007.

Installed as a first-team regular, Negredo immediately displayed his clinical eye for goal, with 12 strikes and four assists in 36 appearances over his first year with his new club. Stepping up another level the following term, he notched 19 goals and five assists in just 34 matches before Madrid exercised a buy-back clause in the summer of 2009. Rather than hand him a chance to nail down a starting berth, Madrid simply sold the forward to Sevilla for a healthy profit.

Over three seasons at Sevilla, Negredo established himself as one of the most lethal frontmen in Spanish football. His first two seasons harvested 34 goals and 11 assists in just 68 appearances before he notched an impressive 25 goals and four assists from 36 matches in 2012/13 – the fourth highest strike rate in La Liga last term, behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao. Negredo ended his Sevilla career with a bang, firing all his side’s goals in a 4-3 win over Valencia. On the international stage, he has struggled to nail down a regular role – from 14 appearances, he has managed to find the net six times.

The Prospects

While the arrival of Fernandinho and Navas will inject pace and dynamism to the City first-team, Negredo’s role will be that of penalty box predator under Pellegrini. His scoring record stands testament to the Spaniard’s ability to turn half-chances into goals and, standing six foot one, his aerial threat could thrive as City seek to utilise the flanks more often this season after a somewhat one-dimensional approach in Roberto Mancini’s last term at the helm.

Fielded as the main forward in a 4-2-3-1 system by Sevilla, Negredo is clearly capable of leading the line alone. Compared with Sergio Aguero and Jovetic, he’s more of a traditional type of centre-forward and seems best-suited to be utilised in the advanced role if Pellegrini is looking for a more powerful option up top. As mentioned in the Moving Target piece on Pellegrini, though, he has a tendency to pick his side in accordance with opponent – indeed, it may transpire that the versatile Aguero’s ability to tuck in behind a lone forward or lead the line effectively may still make him the best bet for regular game time.

Certainly, the new boy’s arrival doesn’t bode well for Edin Dzeko – the Bosnian appeared to have moved up the pecking order after Carlos Tevez left for Juventus but is a little too similar in stature to be fielded alongside Negredo, with the latter’s strong work-rate, superior mobility and intelligent movement inside the box also in his favour. The Spaniard is also likely to challenge to the position of number one spot-kick taker; a factor that would certainly boost his appeal from a Fantasy perspective.

Having managed just 66 goals in Mancini’s last season, City’s main attacking assets have suffered a drop in price across the Fantasy games. The likes of Aguero comes in at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but is expected to benefit from Pellegrini’s more offensive style of play after notching just 12 times in 2012/13. While Negredo won’t be priced as low as Dzeko’s 7.5, an initial cost of around 9.5 could be on the cards and with home games against Newcastle and Hull, in addition to a trip to Cardiff in the opening three Gameweeks, City look primed for early-season investment.

Undoubtedly, a regular role at the head of his side’s attack would see many clamber aboard the Negredo bandwagon but with the forward options available to Pellegrini increasing significantly, it may well be déjà vu all over again, with many opting for the midfield security offered by Silva instead. Fantasy managers will be keenly assessing the pre-season situation for any indications – with a handful of friendlies still to follow, the picture will hopefully be a little clearer as we edge towards the new campaign’s kick-off.

if Rooney moves to Chelsa that means that Kag will play behined RVP?

    in that case

    my front 7 would be

    Kagawa , Walcott , Bale , Silva , Thomas

    Rooney , Sturridge , Rodrigez

thoughs about this for a team?

everything depens about Rooney situation cause i rather have him than Hazard and with him off i can get UTD cover by getting Kag in (it's not only cover thing cause Kag is brilliant)

defence is classic - Kos + 4.5M guys

...United won't sell Rooney to Chelsea without lining up a replacement that would strengthen their own side eg Cesc. It would be suicide if they do. Chelsea will be a massive force with Rooney in their team.

So, what i'm saying is the Rooney replacement(if Cesc) will be a better way to get united cover then Kags, although prob more expensive.

They have been solid The last couple of seasons and Zaba is so attacking anyway that you might pick up some goals/Assists/boners anyway from Zaba.

I just don't think Silva @9m is the way to get Citeh cover.

I have the core of my team, but this Rooney going to chelsea and possible DGW is making RMT's a waste of time.

If Negredo is up top and plays regularly @9.5-10m then he is an excellent shout. I know very little of Jovetic/Negredo.

Nastasic is really, really good. Whenever you watch a City match, you rarely see him make a mistake. He's always there for a last ditch tackle, hardly concedes penalties or space to strikers. World class player-considering his age. Credit to Mancini for that signing.

    Those with Foster/Boruc

Have any of you thought about Migs every week now Pepe is off? Boruc and Foster will probably produce more points but it's harder to get right and going Migs allows you to have Clyne, Turner, Collins, Yanga-Mbiwa and Figueroa in a 5 way rotation

    Thoughts?

Migs/4.0 is the same price as Foster/Boruc, you end up playing a keeper away a lot and you've lost your West Brom coverage at home. I'm not saying yours isn't a valid option but I prefer Foster/Boruc.

Yes they did, but that doesn't take into account Southampton's defensive improvement towards the end of last season, or WBA's slightly odd slump (I'm aware that's not very scientific). Say Toure starts and you can get him for 5 - why would you want Migs at 5.5 anyway?

If I want Liverpool defensive coverage I reckon Johnson at 6 is a better bet than Mids at 5.5.

I hate having a non-playing GK but £10m is too much to spend hence so many looking at the £9.5m pairing options.

Must be a better option than Figueroa at Hull though... That's the equivalent of having a four way rotation with the 5th guy sat 3rd on the bench every week!

Perhaps if Ridgewell leaves (for Fulham) then the Popov bandwagon will roll as the cheap option in the WBA back line? That way a different option can be added to the £9.5m list. Or better yet if Di Canio decides on his GK a viable £9m pairing can be made with Boruc

Last year I owned Aguero and Kagawa several times each and each time, both were a let down and a constant headache as all I wanted to do was sell them but held on due to injuries elsewhere and stuff. This year, I decided I wouldn't get either until they proved themselves a bit first.

Why do I still keep looking at them both and try to work them into my side? Should I learn from previous let downs or go with the "surely they'll come good this time" mentality that I kept employing with both last time out?

That is the strongest midfield I have seen so far! Not sure on Luiz now Jose has said he is going to be a CB going by his comments we'll see Azpi and Ivan as full backs so Azpi should be the value pick from Chelsea. Having Berba as your main striker would be my only concern but obviously to get a midfield like that you have to make sacrifices!

Hey Arn...welcome to the world of posting...

Reliance on midfield five of course - not a bad tatcic but a a worry. Mata and Luiz rotation would be a concern. Rodriguez starts also not guaranteed given Soton's signings and tendency to rotate.

I suggest downgrading one midfielder to one solid striker. Its easier to find solid cheap mid for 4,5-5, then a playing striker. Gives you better balance for future transfers.

While I'm normally a fan of going with cheap rotating keepers you have to consider changing strategy when a bargain appears. That bargain being Mignolet with Reina on the way out.

Rodgers has proven to be a manager of teams that do well for clean sheets - 16 for Liverpool in his first season in charge and 14 for Swansea in their first season in the league.

Liverpool have great opening fixtures, looking at their first 15 games 12 of them offer a decent chance of a CS. Of course they won't come close to 12 CS from 15 games but they should do well.

I would pair Mignolet with a 4m and play him every game. This gets a bit sticky between GW16-19 when Liverpool are away to Spurs, City and Chelsea (with a home game against Cardifff in between and a home game against Hull GW20). For these 3 problematic weeks upgrading the 4m to Marshall gives WBA, SOT and SUN. Obviously that's taking forward planning too far but there would are simpler alternatives either by switching to a similarly priced keeper with good fixtures or just riding it out.

Trying to predict points is a lottery but bear with me:

Clean sheets = 64 (16 CS is same as Liverpool got last season, could well increase in Rodgers 2nd season)
Appearances = 76 (doesn't allow for injury but you would have to transfer if he was going to miss a few games anyway)
Save points = 25 (not a clue but Reina made 81 saves, dividing that by 3 gives just over 25 minutes, this doesn't allow for all the saves that don't count towards a point but Reina missed a lot of minutes through injury so I don't think its unreasonable)
Goals conceded/yellow cards = -15 (plucked out of thin air, say they concede twice in 10 games and deduct a few more points for prudency).

This gives 150 points without allowing for any baps and penalty saves. Providing he avoids injury I can see Mignolet exceeding 150. I got 146 points from rotating keepers last season. Two years ago I got 171 points from the GK position having had the exceptional Vorm/Krul combo from GW4.

One of the common arguments I see is that you need a backup keeper that plays but I really don't see why unless there's a tough run of fixtures that needs covering. If for whatever reason Mignolet was to miss a game and you have no keeper its really isn't a big deal, the replacement would probably get points anyway. There is also the argument about covering the tough games but in this case I would only play a backup 4.5m keeper over Migs in 3 of the opening 15 GWs. Given that the best 4.5m keepers manage a CS in about a third of their games I don't think spending .5 just to cover 3 games over 15 weeks would be worth it. One other thing, Evs went without a keeper for a few weeks early last season and he did alright.

This has gone on a bit but rotating keepers is a very common strategy and often cause for discussion in preseason. Think I've convinced myself to ditch the 2 cheapies for Mignolet and a 4m.

Leaving aside the issue of the 4.0 benchwarmer and whether or not he plays if/when you need him, I have two arguments against Migs at 5.5.

      - Toure at 5.0
      - Johnson at 6.0

See JK's post above, there has already been some interesting discussion on the topic. I'm still considering my options but there isn't a lot between a Foster/Boruc combo compared to a Mignolet/Given combo. Pro's and cons in both but the former will likely yield more save points and greater security.

Yeah I'll probably go Migs and a 4.0. Possibly even Boruc and a 4.0 for the first few weeks because their games aren't too bad, and keeping some cash in the bank for GW1 isn't a terrible idea. It gives you some flexibility when you most need it.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/15/pre-season-friendlies-weekend-round-up/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_5034743

Having read that again, I still think Mig + £4m beat Ruddy + Boruc + £0.5m though, especially since I can get Turner and Clyne for £0.5m less.

If 'Pool don't sign another CB, I may end up with Ruddy / Boruc and Toure plus a £4m defender, however.

I think he'll do really well, the 9.0 price is a bit of a disappointment, I think 8.5 would have given a few people more of a bee in their bonnett - from looking at the boards he seems to be a bit of an irrelevance right now.

He's come out and said he wants to steal Hulks place for the WC. To do that he'll have to deliver - even though Hulk is totally overrated - but based on what he produced at the end of last year I can see him doing just that.

A lot depends on where Liverpool play him. If he's 'in the hole' I don't think he'll be the same goal threat as he will be in a front three.

Agree with Stilicho that at 8.5 he'd float a lot more boats! At the same price as Sturridge most would sooner have the striker

DEF: going with 3 big defenders (liv, city ,arsenal)
MF:Hazard,Wally and Bale are core of every team + Mirallas with brilliant fixures
ATACK:Sturridge ,wolf and Rodrigez all of them have brilliant opening fixures

also i have 1M to spare

the probelm is, take a deep look at the Norwich, Saints, Hammers rotation. it doesn't work in a 3-way. In needs to be part of a 4 way or a 5-way, the fixtures don't match up well for a rotation

Might be mixing around a bit but I think Lambert is nailed on for me, he's better than JRod (despite the loverboys here).

It seems to go in waves, a few days ago he was in quite a lot of RMTs. I find it difficult to think rationally about Lambert because a) every time I got him last season he did nothing, and b) he looks a bit like a bricklayer.

As long as we are catching lurkers. I was a lurker/reader for a half a year until I realised I didn't have to pay to be a forum member..... 😆
