Scout Report – Christian Eriksen

After announcing the capture of Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela a week last Friday, Tottenham rounded off a hectic day of transfer activity by acquiring Christian Eriksen from Ajax Amsterdam. With just one year left on his contract at the Dutch club, Spurs were able to snap up the 21-year-old for a bargain fee reported to be in the region of £11m to take their summer spending past the £100m mark:

The Dane is the eighth new face to arrive at the north London club as Andre Villas-Boas splashes the cash accrued from the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. Following months of speculation linking him to Liverpool, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, Eriksen revealed Tottenham’s long-term interest was key to his decision:

“There were a lot of rumours, but I only felt right about the approach from Tottenham. The club followed me for a long time and really showed intent. It was the whole package that attracted me. I spoke briefly with the manager and my impression is that he is a very good manager. The goal is to challenge for the title. That is what the club wants and that is what I want. From the conversations I have had, they have indicated that they see me as an attacking midfielder, a creative player. They have also told me that you are expected to fight for a spot on the team because there are a lot of good players here. But, of course, I hope things will fall to my advantage.”

The History

A prodigious talent, Eriksen’s youth career began in his native country with Odense Boldklub where he quickly caught the attention of a number of major clubs. After trials with Chelsea, United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Milan, the playmaker opted to join Ajax’s youth system back in 2008.

Handed his first-team debut midway through the 2009/10 season, Eriksen produced just a single assist from 15 appearances (10 from the bench) as he was slowly introduced to the senior side. Firmly established as a regular the following year, Eriksen returned six goals and 11 assists from 28 appearances before stepping up again over the next couple of campaigns, producing a further 17 goals and 36 assists from 66 Eredivisie matches as he helped the Amsterdam side to three consecutive Dutch league titles. Eriksen also registered two goals and three assists from four league games this term prior to his move to White Hart Lane.

On the international stage, he has represented Denmark at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 a total of 38 times and notched 12 goals. Eriksen has also received 37 caps for the senior side, finding the net on four occasions.

The Prospects

Despite the multitude of midfield options available to Villas-Boas, Eriksen is expected to quickly establish himself as a regular in the Spurs starting XI. The main point of contention, however, is just where he will fit into the Tottenham side – at Ajax, he was fielded on the left of a midfield three as part of an inverted triangle, with one player sitting in front of the back-four and two pushing on in a 4-3-3 formation. Such a scenario could see a more defensively-disciplined player such as Sandro or Etienne Capoue given the job of screening the backline, allowing Eriksen, along with either Paulinho or Mousa Dembele, the chance to bomb forward and support Roberto Soldado.

Alternatively, Villas-Boas could revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation he opted for last season. The Spurs boss retained this system for the Gameweek 1 win over Crystal Palace, with Gylfi Sigurdsson tucked in behind Soldado, before shifting to a 4-3-3 in the subsequent two league fixtures. A role in “the hole” could be on the cards for the Dane if his manager chooses to go down this route, with Sigurdsson and the likes of Lewis Holtby looking set to drop further down the pecking order.

Speaking to the press after Sunday’s north London derby defeat at the Emirates, however, Villas-Boas offered up a somewhat ambiguous statement on the matter. The Portuguese boss conceded a 4-3-3 was “more or less the way we want to go forward this season,” before going on to praise Eriksen’s abilities by saying, “He is a wonderful creative player.. a good solution for our No 10 position”, then followed that up with, “In between those systems we will fall”.

Even the Spurs fans sites are uncertain of their manager’s intentions but whichever tactical set-up he ultimately decides upon, there is no question Villas-Boas must afford Soldado greater support up front. The Spaniard has been far too isolated in the past couple of games as the lone striker – an injection of creativity in the middle of the park is essential if Spurs are to get the best out of the former Valencia forward and Eriksen’s assured touch, vision and ability with either foot looks the ideal solution.

Coming in at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 7.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team Eriksen’s delivery from set-pieces and corners, allied with a penchant for hitting the net from distance, makes him a real contender for our five-man midfields. With Lamela priced at 9.0 in FPL, the Dane’s more budget-friendly cost may well persuade owners to take a punt and also afford Soldado’s owners a greater degree of optimism, with the forward relying purely on spot-kicks as a source of goals thus far.

While the spotlight shines brightly on the other side of north London following Mesut Ozil’s arrival at Arsenal, Eriksen’s capture could turn out just as significant. Immediately, the Dane has been handed a kind run of fixtures to quickly make an impact – with home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, allied with trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, Villas-Boas’ side will be confident of returning to winning ways as they face up to life in the top-flight without a certain Welshman.

None of these are either nailed on medium-long term or proven point scorers in the FPL.

Sorry guys just moving this from the bottom of the last page.

    Team:

    Boruc - Davis
    Mert - Zab - Toure - Collins - Olsson
    Walcott - Silva - Coutinho - Nolan - Whittingham
    Soldado - Giroud - Lambert

    Bank: £0.9m

    Planned transfers:
    This week: Olsson -> Chester
Next week: Toure -> whichever Liverpool defender starts at right back

What do we think? Solid plans? Should leave me with roughly £2mil in the bank for a Nolan or Lambert upgrade.

I will not have RVP this entire season. I want to see how I can do without him. It may affect my overall rank but quite frankly I am not too fussed, and I enjoy the difficult captain choices each week.

If my random captain choice pays off one week and RVP blanks that same week, I will be content with my 2013/14 season.

If you have a lot of cash towards the end of the season, there are established budget options performing well in midfield (a la Sigurdsson @ £5m) and RVP is scoring at a goal a game or more then it would be madness not to have him.

Right now it is obviously very debatable if he's worth it, and personally I don't think he is, but circumstances change and he could become a more realistic option if the scenario above plays out

Right, lots of people have been asking about what Liverpool's options are at RB, with Johnson out for up to 10 weeks (7 or 8 gameweeks) so here's the rundown:

    A) Skrtel at RB

The last time Skrtel played RB this happened: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/14869938
    Never again.

    B) Toure at RB.

Toure did play RB at Arsenal before he became a CB, but that was a long time ago, and he's a bit slower these days, so realistically he is competing with Skrtel and Sakho for a CB slot now. Still a better option than Skrtel at RB though.

    C) Wisdom at RB.

Wisdom is definitely in pole position for the RB role, having done well there last season when both Johnson and Kelly were out. He is primarily a CB by trade, having played there at all youth levels (and captaining England U21s from CB) but was eased into the team at RB last season, and didn't look too assured when playing CB in the preseason friendlies.

    D) Kelly at RB.

Kelly has been out for a whole year, and doesn't quite have full match fitness, so won't be starting there initially. If Johnson is out for a long time then I'd expect to see Kelly get some gametime at some point though. Like Wisdom, Kelly is a CB who got his first team opportunities in the RB role, but a couple of years older, though it should be noted that before he did his cruciate ligament last September he was keeping Enrique out of the team with his good form at RB leading to GJ playing LB, so once he is fully recovered and match fit he'll be ahead of Wisdom in the pecking order for RB I reckon.

    E) Flanagan at RB

John Flanagan is another prospect who could get time. Unlike Kelly and Wisdom he is a specialist RB unlike Kelly and Wisdom, and is the same age as Wisdom, though got his debut before Wisdom did. Rodgers promoted Wisdom ahead of him in the pecking order last season for the RB role, so I'd imagine he won't be starting.

    F) Ryan McLaughlin at RB

A name to keep an eye on is that of Ryan McLaughhlin, a specialised RB from the youth setup, only 18 and already called up for Northern Ireland, a very good prospect. Kelly and Wisdom played CB at junior levels, but have only been trusted at RB at senior level so far. I wouldn't expect to see McLaughlin starting, but he will probably make the bench at some point.

    G) 3-5-2 with Henderson as a right wing back

This is possible, with a back 3 of Agger, Sakho, Toure/Skrtel, and Enrique LWB. Equally one of the names above could play RWB instead of Henderson, but this is the formation in which Henderson is competing with those above for his place.

    H) Sakho LB, Enrique RB.

This is theoretically possible, but Enrique has never played RB for Liverpool, and while Rodgers might trust Johnson playing full back with his weaker foot, I don't think he'd trust Enrique nearly as far, and so this won't be happening.

    Tl;dr?

Basically Wisdom will almost certainly play RB in a 4-4-2 vs Swansea, after that it is less clear, with Sakho also still to be integrated into the team.

Vs Swansea I would expect a back 4 of: Enrique, Agger, Skrtel/Toure, Wisdom

Wisdom is a good prospect but is not nailed on while Johnson is out, as Kelly will likely get some minutes sometime. Once Johnson is back Wisdom will return to the bench or go on loan.

Nope, he'll not be starting any time soon, but I should perhaps have included him.

Good youth prospect, only 20, and one for the future, but at CB, his pace would stand him in good stead for playing RB (broke Nani and Ronaldo's speed records in the Sporting Academy) but his inexperience will lead to him not being thrown in at the deep end yet. An occasional bench role with sub appearances if we're winning beckon

If Liverpool keep Sturridge fit & scoring, aligned with Suarez & Coutinho both creating/scoring I'd suggest more than 4th is possible for us this season.

We might not have spent like Spurs,or brought in big names like Arsenal or City, but what we do have is a manager that's been able to produce a unity, spirit, determination & hunger that all sides need to achieve their goals over the course of a season.

I've been singing this tune since last season.been subject to constant derision from the blue noses in work & the Man U lot but the positive feeling about where we're heading is a just one.

If we beat Swansea we'll be heading into a home game v Southampton with a chance of taking 15 points out of 15...last season we took only 15 out of the 1st 36.

fintess is key as you are still not deep enough. If gerrard, Lucas or Agger get hurt you might feel it badly too. And that is quite a injury prone bunch

None of the key players for top sides are as fragile IMO. Arsenal maybe have Walcott, United you could say Vidic, but they wont be hurt as bad as LIV IMO as your replacement is that much worse. I would go as far to say that if Lucas is out you dont have anyone who could do his job nearly as well. I think he is key for your defense

arsenal always seem to manage, but Giroud out would hurt them.

Instead or RVP United have Roo or Chicha so not an empty hole. Yaya is key for sure, but again they have Fernandinho or Javi Garcia. It will hurt all these sides but not as much IMO

Yes and what you said about most of the big sides is incorrect, ManU would still challenge without RVP similarly you could take any big player from Arsenal and City and they would have reasonable backup, Pool would be 8th-10th again without Gerrard.

Seriously calm down, you've had a nice start but it's a long season. I do agree Rodgers has done a great job and the club seems to be really together on and off the pitch at the moment but I feel that a top four finish would a brilliant season for Liverpool, don't expect any more, and be prepared to be 6th again because I think that's where you're likely to finish.

They are what they are, Everton have conceded very few shots in and out of the box. I'd wait a little more than 3 weeks to see if the stats even themselves out, don't know if Everton will continue to be that strong defensively.

      Tremendous team.
Loving your forwards, midfield looks quite strong (HBA and Nolan to, say, Lamela and Brady a possibility) - but think defence / gk could be better.
I might look to swap goalkeepers for Mignolet plus 4.0 option (spending your 0.8m on this upgrade) and resign yourself to playing him every week. Alternatively switch Collins to Coleman.
Also - Koscielny instead of Mert, saves a whopping 0.1m!

Dropped Coutinho cause he hadn't done a thing all year. Have Sturridge for Pool attacking anyways.
Picked up Yaya when I dropped Silva just to keep exposure there. He's managed to surprise me for a long time with his attacking potential.
Don't want Wolcott & Giroud, one of the two is fine and I'd rather hold Giroud. Lamela is a possibility, was debating whether to go after him or Eriksen. Feeling M's so far this year aren't doing a whole lot but looking for that answer...

I think Eriksen is going to be pivotal in build up play for spurs this season, but Lamela seems more of a goal scoring option if he gels quickly into the side after his large goal haul last season.

In hope of the prospect of Ravel Morrison getting a game (so I can field a good Brady rotation without a trade) I goggled West Ham injuries. Much to my delight I saw a few pages that suggest Downing could be out for a few weeks, On closer inspection I saw Joe Cole is doubtful as well which leads to even better odds of Ravel getting a game. He had a great preseason and most recently scored in the Capitol One Clash against Cheltenham (Notably Allardyce publicly called for him to seize the most of his opportunities and he did by putting in a MOTM performance)

I hope this is his opportunity he can finally solidify a place in the team.

    Brady/Ravel rotations fixtures:
CAR new hull AVL eve swa SUN/AVL

    Pretty good I think.
Anyone else kept a hold of young Ravel?
