Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 21 – The Weak

Having analysed those sides with Strong schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks, our second instalment takes a look at those for whom the fixture list is not smiling so kindly. Thankfully for Fantasy managers, very few teams of Fantasy relevance are adversely affected, with only one of our featured six currently residing in the top half of the Premier League table:

Aston Villa

villa21

Earning three points at the expense of Sunderland could prove absolutely crucial to Paul Lambert’s embattled team. After failing to fully capitalise on a relatively kind festive fixture list, the Villains now have a storm to weather as they face Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton in the next four Gameweeks. The visit of West Brom should provide some relief but neither league nor Fantasy points look immediately forthcoming from the Midlands outfit.

In the short term, then, investment in a defence that has just one clean sheet in the last seven games doesn’t look well advised and owners of Nathan Baker and Brad Guzan might want to consider their options. Christian Benteke’s woeful form has looked to be a key factor in Villa’s plight and these fixtures won’t help him get back on track. Similarly, Gabby Agbonlahor’s winning strike against Sunderland might have earned him some early wildcard suitors if it weren’t for these fixtures. It is worth noting, however, that the picture brightens considerably around Gameweek 23, just in time for a late wildcard.

Swansea

swansea21

Michael Laudrup’s side put up a spirited fight against Man City on New Year’s Day and used their momentum to knock Man United out of the FA Cup. Unfortunately, the Swans face a further two consecutive tests of character in the form of another trip to Old Trafford and home game against Tottenham – fixtures which should be enough to delay any investment.

Swansea defenders have been something of a disappointment this time round and any remaining owners of the likes of Ashley Williams and Chico Flores may decide to cut their losses. The Swans’ attacking assets have not really earned themselves any fans over the last few months but Wilfried Bony’s brace against Man City and last-minute winner in the Cup showed some of the promise he showed during his wonder season in the Eredivisie and has brought him onto a few radars. The good news for suitors of the Ivorian is that, as with Villa, Swansea’s fixtures pick up considerably around Gameweek 23, making him a better call for a late wildcard than an early one.

Fulham

fulham21

Rene Meulensteen now has an unenviable job on his hands. Having steadied Martin Jol’s sinking ship with two wins from the last three, the Cottagers boss has a home game against Sunderland before the fixtures turn ugly, with Arsenal, Man United, Southampton and Liverpool in the following five. Fulham’s fixtures shine a cold light on an already unpopular source of Fantasy players.

Anyone who thought that Meulensteen’s arrival might bring a budget defence to the table may want to wait for a while before assessing the likes of Sascha Riether and Fernando Amorebieta. Steve Sidwell’s fourth goal of the season could have made him an unlikely budget prospect but not, surely, with these fixtures. With a goal in each of his last three games, it would appear that the new coach has indeed resurrected the dormant form of Dimitar Berbatov but, again, the schedule counsels against investment.

BE WARY OF

Newcastle
A spate of injuries and suspensions could hardly have come at a worse time as the Magpies brace themselves for the arrival of Man City next week. With games against Chelsea and Tottenham also in the next six, Fantasy investment in Alan Pardew’s side looks set to be slow. Clean sheets in particular look scarce on Tyneside in the short-term with Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul injured and Mathieu Debuchy suspended. Yohan Cabaye is also an injury doubt after missing the FA Cup loss to Cardiff – frustrating, given his consistent production – while Loic Remy’s stuttering winter form hardly fills his owners with optimism for the forthcoming fixtures.

West Bromwich Albion
Still without a permanent manager since sacking Steve Clarke, the Baggies are a little rudderless now. Not an ideal situation considering that the next six Gameweeks contain games against Southampton, Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea. Such a schedule should deter investment in a defence that has  kept just one clean sheet in ten games. Recent goals from Saido Berahino and Nicolas Anelka have registered their names on a few Fantasy radars, for use in a 3-5-2 formation, but caretaker manager Keith Downing continues to tinker with both team shape and player personnel, allowing us to steer clear until the schedule clears a little.

Cardiff
A triumphant FA Cup victory over Newcastle heralded the arrival of the Bluebirds’ new gaffer Ole Gunnar Solskjær. He has been handed a bit of tough task in the league, though, given that, while home games against West Ham and Norwich look eminently winnable, those fixtures come either side of back-to-back visits to the two Manchester teams. With Cardiff’s assets hitherto attractive primarily for defensive rotation, this schedule looks manageable but there’s a word of warning that Solskjær’s offensive-minded style could compromise the defensive solidity that his predecessor brought to the team. The flip side of that is that players such as Peter Whittingham and even Craig Noone could become more attractive, but it might be best to use these games to monitor the impact of the new regime.

yeah..he's a great pick at that price and those fixtures..Had he not been injured earlier in the season for their last good run of fixtures he would be closer to 5.5 than 4.5.

Does anybody think Aguero is liable to another 0.1m drop? I can get a pretty sexy looking side together with him at 11.8 but loathed to risk my wildcard should he stick at 11.9...guess it depends if he has a miraculous comeback or continues to miss matches.

Okay, this is my first year in BPL fantasy …

Getting pretty lucky with my choices since I am in first place by 60 points and I have Not used my Wildcard yet.

Question is, should I use my Wildcard now or wait to just use the January wildcard? I have Walcott so if I moved him today I would take a -4 pt hit.

BTW I have a team value of 109.7

Thanks for help on common uses of having 2 wildcards at this point in season.

Use January wild card whenever and hold your other one for another 6-7 weeks. You then have a major advantage. I did it last year and increased my lead by 100 points in 3 weeks after 2nd wildcard in March

New to FPL comment posting, but been reading for a long time. My 2cents on Walcott replacements. I am a Gooner and follow the whole team closely (though not at most of the matches). However, I was at the Sunderland match for Ozil's first game in an Arsenal shirt, and only 20 yds from him when he set up Giroud for the goal 🙂

It's very hard to choose between Ozil and Cazorla as a Walcott replacement. Both players have factors in their favour.

In favour of Ozil: Ozil is a better player than Cazorla. Hasn't really "hit his stride" yet in an Arsenal shirt. Way more to come. He could just explode. Also, Wenger always plays Ozil in the "floating central role" when available, meaning he has the most license to roam out of the attacking 3 midfielders. Ozil is nominally in the centre, but will float out to the right alot, but has freedom to go anywhere. If Cazorla plays along side Ozil he will start nominally on the left. He will still drift inside and across quite a bit, but not as much freedom as Ozil. You can see it in the stats that Ozil has way more penalty area touches than Cazorla. Cazorla will also be subbed off more frequently, likely for Podolski on about the 70 minute mark.

In favour of Cazorla: Form. Cazorla is well on form. Man of the Match performance against Spurs. But Ozil has not been on form recently. That may change given his "rest" since the 26th of December. This is a guy who's used to a 2 week winter break. He was looking tired against West Ham on the 26th, but had not played brilliantly before that. Last really good perfomance was against Everton on 8th of December. He looked decent against Spurs (nearly scored), but didn't really have enough time on the pitch to judge. There's also Ozil's away versus away league form (33 pts from 8 games away, versus 62 pts from 7 games home).

Given strong fixtures for Arsenal, I think one of Ozil or Cazorla is a must. But its not as easy to pick as some have said tonight.

The really interesting decision is Gnabry. Gnabry will get a run of games now. Wenger is seriously limited on the right. After Walcott he would normally play Oxlade-Chamberlain (also injured) because Arsenal play with an "outlet player" when they can (see below). When Ramsey comes back he will play him on the right sometimes, but its nowhere near his best position. He's much better as the more "attacking" member of the double pivot (ideally alongside Arteta, late runs into the penalty area - Lampard style).

The case for Gnabry is Arsenal's need for an outlet on the right. Their style of play strongly favours a "Walcott" style player stretching the play on the right. They need someone to stretch the defense to open it up for the central attackers (see Cazorla goals against Spurs on Sat). I have sat next the corner flag several times on the "wrong" side (left) and witnessed this right-side bias several times. And Gnabry is the only player fit in the squad who can provide the outlet. Arteta clearly thinks he can do this, saying "He’s got something not many players have in this team, which is pace and skill to go and beat people." (see http://arseblog.com/2014/01/coin-throwing-injuries-and-gnabrys-surge/) We witnessed Gnabry doing exactly this against Spurs on Saturday.

Further, he's already got form in the league this year: played four times (if you don't count 8 mins against man-utd) and scored 19 pts (almost 5 ppg), and that includes the 6-3 mauling against man-city where he only played 19 mins. 1 goal, 1 assist and 2 bonus points isn't bad for 3 starts.

And he's a huge differential (4.2 in FPL). Ideal fifth "cheap" midfielder. Start him, and if he doesn't play, your sub kicks in.

At the end of the day, it likely depends on Ramsey's form and match fitness. If Ramsey isn't rushed back, Gnabry will get a run of starts. Even if he is, Gnabry will likely get lots of minutes.

Being exhaustive about it (and I am!), Arsenal's attack almost picks itself at the moment. Double pivot is Arteta/Flamini plus one out of Wilshere/Ramsey/Rosicky. Wenger only plays Arteta and Flamini together when we're in "fortress mode".

Giroud will start up front if he's fit. Podolski is our only option if he's not (unless he goes with a false number 9).

That leaves the "attacking 3". Ozil owns the "centre" position. An on-form Cazorla will always start on the "left". That leaves the right. The only players left are Gnabry and two of Wilshere/Ramsey/Rosicky (because one is already playing in the middle). And those 3 are better played in the centre (see above).

After much deliberation I went for Ozil as a Walcott replacement as it gives me a differential over my main mini-league rival who has Cazorla. I had money to do it with my free transfer. But it could backfire 🙂

Might take a hit for Gnabry (Villa away), but more likely wait till Fulham at home next week.

Apologies for mega first post! Good job if you got this far!

Great post! Am finding it really difficult to pick between Ozil and Cazorla. Am I mistaken in thinking Cazorla is more of a goal threat?

Compare the last 4 games they've both played and Cazorla is miles ahead on shots, especially away from home.

Yes. Because Cazorla is on form. But check the stats and you'll find that the majority of Cazorla's shots are from outside the box. When he's on form those could start to fly in though. The real question is will Cazorla's form last when Ozil is back as "the main man"?

Good post although I disagree with some points. Ozil does not necessarily own the centre and Cazorla the left. Podolski can easily play on the left with Caz central and Ozil right, or even Jack on the left/right. There are a host of options and nothing is clear cut at all in that Arsenal midfield.

Interesting. Can you point me to a game where Ozil has played and not been in the centre? I agree that Ozil spends alot of time on the right, but he's never the "right sided outlet". Wilshere can play on the wing, but he's a bit rubbish there. Way better through the middle.

About to go to bed so can't really look into it too much but there are Gws where Ozil's average positions is much further towards the right such as GW16. I agree that Jack is better in the middle but he has been effective on the right in that game he scored 2 goals (CL was it?) while playing there so who knows? You may be spot on but all I'm saying is that it's hard to predict what will happen with so many options available.

Anyway off to bed, will check back on this post tomorrow morning. Once again, awesome post mate. 🙂

You could be right 🙂 Wenger is never 100% predictable. Ozil's average position is always weighted towards the right (in fact, if you watch his highlights reels from Real Madrid, there's a suspiciously large amount of assists from an advanced right position).

Its possible that Ozil could start on the "right" (Cazorla middle, Poldi left). But I still think that neither he nor Wilshere give Arsenal the pacey outlet option that stretches defenses. Maybe Wenger will play safe away from home (e.g., Wilshere on the "right" but really strengthening the centre) and give Gnabry another chance to impress at the Emirates against Fulham next week...

Great post mate, as a fellow Gooner I agree with everything you say. Caz does look the form player, although Ozil offers a greater threat in the central role.

Gnabry is an interesting proposition, but I don't see Wenger giving him a solid "run" in the team. He will almost definitely start the Villa match, but then I reckon he will either shift Rambo out there or even look to move Ozil aross and start Poldi. Not sure when The Ox is back either, but he will definitely start ahead of him in 2/3 of games given greater experience etc.

As an aside I think this injury is devastating for our title bid. Theo is a unique player in the prem, and his finishing has come on leaps and bounds. Don't see us having the goals in us to push on now, which is very sad. 🙁

You may be right about the "run" Gnabry gets. He's young, so Wenger won't want to play him to exhaustion. But what if he starts banging them in, beginning with Villa?

I agree with you about Walcott. The real tragedy for him personally is the World Cup. How many Brazil World Cups does a player get in his life?

Don't give up on the title yet 🙂 If Cazorla can click with Ozil, and Giroud can rediscover his form...

As an arsenal fan I would love gnabry to start... But once Ramsey is back they will be back to what they were like before Walcott came back plus they have Podolski fit and Ox coming back soon as well as Rosicky getting more time. I just don't see space for Gnabry on a regular basis.

You're right over the long term. But not sure when Ox is back, and he won't be match fit when he does. And Wenger needs some depth on the bench. Atm, if he starts his strongest team (assuming Ramsey is fit) he would have Poldi, Wilshere and Gnabry on the bench. There's minutes for the lad for sure for the next month or so provided his form stays good.

To be honest I don't think Gnabry for a hit is a good FPL move.

How often are you going to start a non nailed 4.2m midfielder? Not too often saying with the money saved you will have a super squad.

I think its a no brainer Ramsey plays up there when he is fit.

Özil is the obvious and smartest move as Walcott replacement.

Yes, I'm not promising, but I will likely not give into the temptation to take a hit to bring him in for the away game 🙂

He would be a short term prospect (4 weeks up to GW 24) anyway. If he scores points during that time with the WC active he will shoot up in price because the causals will see a 4.2 mid playing for Arsenal scoring points. So quids in.

Remember Ramsey's goal scoring form before this season was not brilliant. I speak as a firm Ramsey supporter. I had him in my team the minute he started scoring and he stayed there till recently. He'll be back in (probably for Ericksen) if his form picks up where it left off. But he was 5.5 for a reason at the beginning of the season.

Plus, Ramsey's contribution to Arsenal isn't just goals. He's probably our best tackler, and his all round game is amazingly improved. Perhaps he'll play "on the right" away from home, but he won't really be the outlet player, rather packing the mid-field and adding extra solidity. Its the home games I think Gnabry will be a prospect for (with Ramsey playing next to Arteta).

Great post mate, I agree with most of it.

Imo I think you are being a bit optomistic with gnabry however as a mid to attack with arteta, rambo, caz, ozil, gnabry behind giroud looks a little open to me and I think wenger liked having wilshere in one of the wide roles to drop in and cover for rambo when he made his forward runs so this will likely continue.

The other thing I felt when watching caz closely when I had him earlier in the season was that with ozil on the pitch not as much of the play went through him and this seemed to really hamper his impact on the game so unless he can learn to make penetrating runs behind the defence for ozil to pick out then I don't think his form will continue when ozil comes back (this is a feeling only and don't know if the stats back this up!)

Anyway thanks for the post, great read. If you have any critique on my thoughts they would be much appreciated also.

You may be right about the (Arteta, Ramsey; Cazorla, Ozil, Gnabry) combination feeling a little fragile away from home (though Villa are really struggling to score atm). But at home I think its a different matter. Fulham and Palace at home in the next 4 GW. Especially Palace where they will likely put 10 men behind the ball, and we will need an "X-factor" to stretch the defence.

One factor that might put a damper on Gnabry (but is another opportunity) is Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in full training now. If he's match fit he'll start ahead of Gnabry.

You're right to point out Wilshere backing up Ramsey, but I still think this is more likely away from home. And it depends on Ramsey picking up where he left off.

Your observation about the combination of Cazorla and Ozil is spot on. Lots of Gooners have been a bit frustrated by this. If they actually click, Arsenal will be unstoppable. Maybe this week is the week 🙂

Interesting thoughts matskm and you might be right about wenger not being afraid to go a little more open at home we'll have to keep a close eye on it over the next 3 or so gws before we play our wc.

Great news on ox I really rate him and hope he comes back and develops into the player I think he can even though he had that bad injury. He can look to ramsey for inspiration at least eh?

Interestingly in the 2012-2013 season, Cazorla scored 7 goals before Christmas (including a devastating hat-trick against Reading on the 17th Dec), but only 5 goals the rest of the season. Didn't score when we beat Newcastle 7-3 on Dec 29th. After Christmas he didn't score till Jan 23rd. You can make stats "suggest" whatever you want within reason - but its possible he did suffer a bit.

So him being in-form at this time can perhaps be explained by the fact that he has played a lot less so far this season…

My gut feeling says 'Cazorla', but I'm guessing that's because I ditched Ozil some time ago and was disenchanted by his lacklustre performances that I actually saw. Cazorla just looks more sharp and up for it at this point.

    Mannone / Harper
    Coleman / Kos / Clyne / Ward / Chester
    Hazard / Silva/ Walcott / Januzaj / Ramsey

Right now I could do something like:
    Marshall Mannone
    Coleman Kosc Chester Turner Ward
    Ozil Hazard Eriksen Barkley Mutch
    Suarez Aguero RVP

Of course that's make big assumptions on Aguero and RVP's returning from injury and into form, but theoretically, it's much easier to go down from one of those guys than ever up to them if one of them came back and started dominating....

Not actually going to do it, just a random thought.

      I'm doing it.

Midfield of Silva, Oscar, Ramsey, Gerrard.

Defence of Coleman + 4 cheapies

    Best for pts:

1--Eriksen or Ramsey as 5th Mid (w/ only 2 For)
    or
    2--Jrod (and no 5th mid)

    Ozil, YYT, Hazard, Eriksen (Gnabry)

Money banked for Welbeck to Aguero ASAP. Thoughts?

Anyone think Cabaye or Rooney will play?

Don't want to wildcard yet but may be forced too.
Rooney, Cabaye, G Johnson, Krul, Sterling and Wally all injured or unlikely to play.

I can field a pretty decent team with a Wally FT, Rooney and any other player being available

I'm confident Rooney will play but Cabaye looks to be in serious doubt now

I guess we have to wait for the pressers

I think GJ and Cabaye will play. But I'm very close to doing GJ > Baines and Walcott > Cazorla for -4 and avoid the WC until later in the month.
