Scout Scribbles – United Stumble Again

United serve up a dire display and are comprehensively beaten by Olympiacos. Liverpool and Sunderland are set for a double Gameweek 31, Aaron Ramsey could be back for mid-March, Lacina Traore is ruled out with a hamstring injury for Everton, whilst Jonny Howson is back in action for Norwich:

United Slump in Greece

For last night’s 2-0 loss at Olympiacos, David Moyes made just three changes to the side that won at Selhurst Park last weekend. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic continued at the back, though further up the field, Tom Cleverley, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young came in for Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj (omitted from the squad altogether) and the cup-tied Juan Mata. On the injury front, Danny Welbeck cemented his comeback from a knee problem with a second-half sub appearance, though Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Rafael failed to make the squad.

The Scout Says: A single shot on target in a dire display will do little to raise hopes and expectations of United’s main Fantasy assets. Moyes’ men now have this weekend off before returning to action in Gameweek 29 away to West Brom, and with a double Gameweek 31 also on their agenda, essentially have four fixtures over that period when many other sides play just twice. With Liverpool and City set for a double that week, though, Robin van Persie – despite scoring in four of his last five in the league – may struggle to persuade many to take a punt, whilst Mata and Wayne Rooney also look a little less enticing as United continue to toil under Moyes.

Double Gameweek 31 for Liverpool and Sunderland

The Premier League confirmed a new date for Liverpool’s home clash against Sunderland, which was originally set to take place in Gameweek 29. The Anfield encounter has been moved to Wednesday March 26, thus handing both sides a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 31 – Liverpool travel to Cardiff, whilst the Black Cats pay visit to Norwich prior to their midweek confrontation on Merseyside.

The Scout Says: At present, then, this leaves six teams with doubles in Gameweek 31, with United, City, West Ham and Hull also set to feature twice. Fantasy managers now have the dilemma of choosing between the likes of Robin van Persie, Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge for the double, though with both Manchester sides up against one another, Liverpool’s far kinder pair of matches is sure to see substantial investment in both their forwards. For the short-term, at least, it’s likely to quash any ideas over selling Suarez to free up budget – both he and Sturridge look capable of running riot across both games, whilst the likes of Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling are set to offer options across the price brackets for those loading up on the Premier League’s top-scoring side.

Ramsey Close to Gunners Return

Reports suggest the Welshman is stepping up his recovery from a thigh problem and could be in line to return in time for Arsenal’s north London derby with Tottenham on Sunday March 16 (Gameweek 30).

The Scout Says: Despite missing the last nine league matches through injury, Ramsey is still joint-top scoring midfielder along with Mesut Ozil for the Gunners in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Not only does that sum up his early-season form, it’s somewhat reflective of the German’s inability to produce in recent matches – he’s managed a single assist since Ramsey limped off at West Ham back in Gameweek 18. Certainly, providing the Welshman can prove his fitness, there’s no doubt he’d grab our attentions again – he’s down to 7.0 in FPL now – but bearing in mind he also suffered a setback last month, most Fantasy managers will be a little tentative to pencil in plans for Ramsey’s return until he’s pronounced fit by Arsene Wenger.

Traore Setback for Toffees

The Ivorian is set to be sidelined with the hamstring injury sustained in the pre-match warm-up against Chelsea last weekend. Roberto Martinez rolled out an update on both Traore and Romelu Lukaku ahead of the weekend visit of West Ham:

“It is going to take a long period of time which at this stage of the season will be a big miss. It will be weeks rather than months. It’s a really disappointing outcome. He was ready and had been working really hard since he arrived at the club. Starting the game at Chelsea was the next target after Swansea and for him to pull his hamstring in the last action of the warm-up was a really disappointing moment….Romelu has been working really well and he is looking fresh and ready. We are all very excited to see him back enjoying his football with really top energy levels.”

The Scout Says: Traore needed just four minutes of his debut in the FA Cup to net his first goal for the Merseysiders and had looked set to offer strong competition for the lone forward role under Martinez. Yesterday’s news, allied with confirmation of Lukaku’s return, puts the big Belgian back at the top of the pecking order in spite of Steven Naismith’s recent fine form. The Toffees have failed to score in any of their last four league matches – a run coinciding with Lukaku’s ankle injury absence – but with a very favourable schedule to follow, he may yet come into contention as a third forward option once again. Now down to 11% ownership after scoring just once in his last 10 starts, the 8.2-priced Lukaku has home games with West Ham, Cardiff and Swansea and a trip to Fulham in the next five to reignite our interest.

Howson Steps Up Canaries Comeback

The Norwich midfielder turned out for 60 minutes of last night’s reserve clash against Everton as he edges nearer to a first-team return. The reserves team coach, Mark Robson, rolled out an update:

“He trained with us and he trained really, really well. It’s nice for Jon because he’s been out for a while and he obviously needs a few minutes under his belt to get back into the swing of things. I’m sure there will be a few fans who want to come down and see him because he’s a top player. It will be great if we can get a few more supporters through the door because of that.”

The Scout Says: Sidelined since mid-December with a back problem, Howson has started all but two of Norwich’s first 16 Gameweeks and was a pivotal figure in Chris Hughton’s first XI. Despite missing the last 11 league matches, Howson’s two-goal tally – he’s notched against Stoke and Arsenal – is just one less than Robert Snodgrass, for example, in the Canaries midfield. Providing he can prove his fitness, Howson could return for a schedule that pits Hughton’s side against fellow strugglers Villa, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, West Brom and Fulham in six of the next seven Gameweeks. With Snodgrass understandably set to be the main source of interest, though, there may yet be one or two Canaries who prove real differentials over that upcoming spell.

          Most offensive-minded Everton midfielder and also on set-piece duties now. Even when Naismith was playing the lone forward role, he was still getting points. Lukaku's return will have little effect on him. With plenty of options up front and since Everton has to be covered somehow, the Mirallas is indeed essential for the DGW, yes, in my opinion.

        This isn't a case of Rodgers trying to implement a good new playing style and struggling initially. This is archaic tactics and consistently poor team selection. I agree with your point, unless he shows a willingness to go for games it won't happen. Players must be held accountable too.

          Absolutely, the players need to take some responsibility but the Manager always ends up taking the flack. Everyone single one of them should be ashamed of themselves, can you imagine RVP slating the tactics under Fergie? no chance!

          4-4-2 with rubbish wingers simply doesn't work, playing players not in their favoured positions to accommodate his system is the wrong approach. All the top teams are playing different, its boring, it's predictable and it has to change.

            Exactly! I honestly cannot understand the insistence on playing wingers when our winners have been, at best, inconsistent. When you have Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj and Rooney who all prefer the CAM position, easily could implement a "tight" 3 CAM formation like Dortmund used to sometimes when Kagawa was with them.

      Sorry to be a pest, but I wanted to Re-post my thoughts on the ManU hulk on the last page:

      From a fantasy perspective, if you leave your expectations and feelings to one side, why not just treat Manchester United the same way you would any other team? They are a decent side with some decent fantasy potential. RVP is consistent, if not over-priced. Rooney can tear it up on occasion. Januzaj is having a great season and is very cheap, albiet with some rotation risk. Evra is worth a look too.

      Overall, don't let your expectations cloud your judgement. Pick the players based on their fantasy potential, not based on who they play for.

      Innit.

          Perhaps Bubbles, perhaps. Rooney did well for me earlier in the season. I just meant that because the team isn't living up to expectations doesn't mean you should write off their players from a fantasy perspective. I suspect they'll have a point to prove against West Brom.

        it's more of a case of players from other teams having more value at their prices

        take januzaj for example, yeah he's been good but he's in & out of the side like a yo-yo, youre better off with sterling who's playing every game in a team scoring bundles of goals

        you could make cases like that against every utd player

Iv put this together but without the knowledge of evertons game its probably too early to start putting together drafts! fancied finding out if i can build a semi decent team to take full advantage of the DGW. Top of my ML and being the only player with a WC i want a healthy lead for the run up to the end of the season.

      Hot Topic

      Lots of talks here since yesterday on potentially selling Hazard for GW31... I think this is rubbish... as he now costs 11.0 and most serious players will have a selling price in the low 10... he's the main Chelsea offensive asset to own in FPL terms so losing th money and a transfer to get him back is not advisable Am I missing something?

          Of course I bought at 9.1M. If you bought him above 10M, maybe ditching short-term could pay off but we all saw against Newcastle what kind of explosion can happen at anytime really.

          Exactly, if AJ can find some form he'll have three extra fixtures (11vs8) and save money that may be needed for Aguero or Yaya. I'll consider it nearer the time.

      Assuming Everton-Palace is rearranged to the most logical GW31 then Everton would have from GWs30-32 - CAR, SWA&CPL, ful. Baines anyone?!

        Coleman more dangerous than Baines.

        No only does Baines' points not justify his price, nor does his play style. And free kicks are gone.

              Yes possibly and I'm certainly not that. But Jelavic/Long and Sterling are excellent and cheap DGW options which can allow for a little Baines flirtation.

        I have Baines and I'd hold.

        For me the strength of the fixtures within the dgw is essential and those after.

        Plenty are measuring the numbers of players surely plenty without wildcard will have a double figure amount of dgw players.

          Yup, agreed. Which is one of the big reasons why I may go into GW31 without any City. 1 of the fixtures isn't that good and 2 of the next 3 are pretty poor too.

        I was strongly considering getting him in, but I won't be able to afford SAS and Aguero up front on GW31 if I have Baines at the back. If money wasn't an issue, I'd definitely get him, though. Everton looked solid against Everton and he's always scoring from the penalty-spot.

          What are people's thoughts on Mirallas for their upcoming DGW's? Everton's fixtures look great but might Lukaku's return negatively influence Mirallas' scoring potential? (it seems Mirallas has scored better in Lukaku's absence). Also, rotation. I noticed Mirallas was benched for the Palace game which got called off at the last min. Can we afford to pick a player that's susceptible to the odd rest or do the juicy fixtures make up for it?

            With Lukaku and Deulofeu back I wouldn't touch Mirallas. Very big rotation risk as Deulofeu started competing with him for a starting spot before his injury.

              This was the exact transfer I was looking at with a view of buying Yaya back for the DGW (I don't rate Silva's potential, only 2 assists from his last 7 games). Just not sure about Mirallas now looking at things.

            Juicy fixtures make up for it I think. Worst case is probably that he comes off the bench - that's not a horrendous prospect given the matches they've got lined up. Not 100% sure I'd get him in, but I'm certainly sticking with him.

            He is nailed on, no doubt. It's just that he's not playing OoP anymore. But he's offensive minded enough (and now on set-piece duties) to ignore. With plenty of options up front for GW31, I think he's indeed an essential Everton cover if they do have a DGW as well. Their fixtures are too good to ignore.

              He was on the bench for the Palace game though before it was called off? So not sure he is nailed on...?

              I could see him score well though. Wondering if picking Baines might be a better bet though and going with a cheaper mid like Sterling to raise the funds.

                But he started the Chelsea game, which was a way more difficult/important game. For now his place is safe. He's in form and wouldn't be benched. Deulofeu is still returning from injury. I'd get Baines myself wasn't for his price. Can't accommodate him with SAS and Aguero up front altogether.

                        Chelski 23

                        HAZARD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
                        He takes me to watch on green pastures;
                        He leads me beside the still waters.
                        He restores my goals;
                        He dribbles in the paths of righteousness for the game's sake.
                        Yea, though I walk through the valley of the Stamford Bridge,
                        I will fear no Özil; For HE is with me;
                        Lampard and Ramires, they comfort me -
                        But you delight and entertain me in the presence of our enemies;
                        You fill my head with glee; My lager overflows.
                        Surely Torres and Oscar shall follow HIM for the rest of the Season;
                        And I will dwell in the Mathew Harding Stand forever!

                        😀 I have offered it to all Chelski fans, free of charge! 😉

                  Assuming no games are rescheduled before GW30 (please correct me if that's mad), teams will have this number of fixtures remaining:

                  Man City, Sunderland - 12
                  Everton - 11
                  Palace, Arsenal, Villa, Hull, Liverpool, Man Utd, New, Swansea, West Brom, West Ham - 10
                  Tottenham, Southampton, Stoke, Norwich, Fulham, Chelsea, Cardiff - 9

                  So after these blanks could be good time to get some everton back in your team, a cheekey distin or jagielka perhaps, as even their tough fixtures against the top three are all at home.
                  I hope AJ's form for Sunderland picks up by then too.

                  ( Gabbidon &n Kolarov ) but both will not play

                  so I want to sell on of them and get good defender can get CS next week...
