Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Sore Night For Mourinho

Eden Hazard nets another spot-kick as Chelsea suffer a 3-1 Champions League loss to PSG. Jose Mourinho fields Andre Schurrle as the lone forward and is scathing over his other strikers’ recent displays. Ross Barkley remains a doubt for Everton’s clash with Arsenal, Kostas Mitroglou could be out for the season, whilst Stoke’s Oussama Assaidi continues to struggle with a knee problem:

Chelsea Slip to Parisian Defeat

It’s two losses in the space of five days for Jose Mourinho’s boys as they sunk to a 3-1 defeat in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against PSG. Mourinho opted to go into the game without a named striker, instead fielding Andre Schurrle furthest forward with Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian in behind the German. Hazard slotted home a 26th minute penalty after Oscar was brought down in the area, before David Luiz donned his villain cap, slicing the ball into his own net to put Chelsea behind.

Post-match, Mourinho was quick to criticise his team’s defending for each of the three goals they conceded, and also commented on his frontline tinkering:

“Of course. It’s difficult for us to score goals. I’m not happy with my strikers’ performances so I have to try things. With André at least I know we have one more player to have the ball, and even not being dangerous because he’s not a striker, he can associate and the team can have control of the ball. But football is not just about that. It’s also about scoring goals, getting behind, and that is for strikers. Real strikers.”

The Scout Says: Last night’s result, coupled with Saturday’s loss to strugglers Crystal Palace, has clearly got to the Chelsea boss. With Samuel Eto’o struggling with a hamstring injury, Fernando Torres losing his manager’s faith and Demba Ba having never really earned it, Mourinho’s frustration with his strikers is clearly hitting boiling point. In light of this, Schurrle may well continue in the forward role; such out of position prospects will add plenty of appeal to a player who has scored four in his last four Premier League starts. Meanwhile, if it’s goals Mourinho wants, there’s one man still doing his best to find them. Another goal from the spot last night for Hazard will only remind his manager, and Fantasy managers, of the Belgian’s importance for his side; now up to 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Hazard is far from budget friendly, but his explosive potential will have those managers who recently sold the Belgian for the double Gameweek 31 looks for a way back in. Home games against Stoke City and Sunderland, with a trip Swansea sandwiched in between, offer Chelsea the ideal opportunity to overcome their dip in form and kick-start their hunt for the title, and Hazard is likely to be the central figure in ensuring that that’s the case.

Martinez Rolls Out Injury Update

Roberto Martinez issued an injury update on a selection of key players yesterday. The Everton boss stressed that Phil Jagielka will feature again soon for his side having missed the Toffees’ last six games with a hamstring injury, though he is still being monitored, and also revealed that Ross Barkley is ‘touch-and-go’ for Sunday’s game against Arsenal after picking up a calf problem last weekend:

“Ross had a knock on his calf and he is recovering well from it. Over the next three or four days we will have a clearer idea of where he is and we are going to treat every day as it comes.”

Martinez also declared his confidence that Steven Pienaar will feature again for Everton this season, after the South African picked up a knee injury playing in the FA Cup last month.

The Scout Says: Plenty of Fantasy managers will be keen to see Barkley prove his fitness for the weekend, with the youngster having started the last three games for the Toffees and scoring in two of those appearances. The midfielder disappointed his 92,000+ new owners last Sunday after he was forced off at half-time against Fulham, and those same owners will be desperate to see the 5.2-priced man make it four starts in a row this weekend. Should he indeed recover, and be handed another start by Martinez, Barkley will be hot property ahead of Everton’s double Gameweek 34. Meanwhile, news that Jagielka will still be eased back into action ensures that Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines remain the Toffees’ defenders of choice, whilst a return to action for Pienaar in the coming weeks will come as yet another worry for owners of Kevin Mirallas, as the South African’s presence will only increase competition in the wide areas.

FULHAM FEAR FOR MITROGLOU

The injured Kostas Mitroglou has travelled to Italy to see a specialist, with fears mounting that the record signing could remain on the sidelines for the rest of season. The £12m man has only featured twice for Fulham since joining in January and has failed to show signs of fully recovering from a knee injury he picked up in training almost a month ago.

The Scout Says: If Fulham weren’t already beginning to regret their decision to splash out on Mitroglou in the winter, yesterday’s developments will truly have them ruing their luck. The striker was a sensation for former club Olympiacos, and Fulham’s capture of the big Greek looked set to lend them a major helping hand in the relegation battle. Subsequently, an initial FPL price of 6.5 was assigned to the Cottagers’ forward and he appeared to have the potential to make a mockery of that price tag. With the Greek international now set to continue on the sidelines and out-of-favour Darren Bent publicly criticising Felix Magath earlier in the week, it seems the Cottagers will be pinning their hopes on the inexperienced Cauley Woodrow or Moussa Dembele in their battle to beat the drop.

Assaidi Still Recovering

Stoke’s on-loan winger admitted he’s not completely over a recent knee problem and is struggling to stake a claim for inclusion in Mark Hughes’ plans for the run-in:

“Things are certainly getting better, but my knee is still not fully healed. I could forget about the pain and play, but that would be a massive long-term risk, so I believe it’s best to be patient and wait for it to get better before playing. I am recovering well so I hope it isn’t too long until I can be picked to play again.”

The Scout Says: Having scored three times in six appearances between Gameweek 15-20, Assaidi looked to have established himself as a regular for the Staffordshire outfit. His recent stint on the sidelines has allowed Marko Arnautovic to cement a role on the left of the attacking midfield three, with the Austrian turning in some crucial displays in a run that has now seen Hughes’ side drop just two points in the last five. With Charlie Adam, Stephen Ireland and Jon Walters now vying for the role in “the hole” and Peter Odemwingie frustratingly classified as a forward, Arnautovic – with 19 points in the last three Gameweeks – still has home games with Newcastle, Spurs and Fulham, in addition to trips to Cardiff and West Brom, to boost his differential appeal.

@ Liverpool fans. What sort of areas do you think Liverpool should strengthen this summer?
I would like to see a CB come in, maybe 2 as Kolo hasn't panned out as the experienced temp cover for Carragher.
I would also like to see a box to box mid come in to start taking over from Gerrard.
One more attacking mid and a Michael Owen/Defoe/Javi Hernandez style player upfront to cover.

Non Liverpool fans can shed their opinion too.

Any ideas, I would like to see an bid for Hernandez, even though he is a UTD player and I can imagine he would want first team football. But with our style of training, I think he will improve and with the extra games from the CL, he could end up playing a fair bit.

No way would Hernandez leave United to warm the bench anywhere else, especially not Liverpool.

He'll leave to become a deserved starter, or to be back up at one of the best clubs in the world.

2 CB, a box to box mid, an attacking mid, and a striker? You don't need 5 players.

A young striker that won't mind being back up, will be cheap, can learn how to play liverpool's style, and will grow.. and a top notch CB, that's all you need.

With the added pressure of the CL we will need a much bigger squad. Many thought we couldn't keep up the title challenge due to small size, I think we've been fairly lucky with lack of injuries.

First priority is a CB. Then maybe a midfield enforcer. Beyond that, it's looking to improve on both left and right but those are more incremental changes.

If people think that this season has been different to any other, it's because they're doing it wrong. The same nonsense crops up every year, usually as a way to justify one's poor returns. It's inevitable that everyone will end up with a very similar team, it's been happening for years. Ronaldo (C) anyone?

Jafalad 130,444 current (5,555 Ave rank last 3 years)
Pascal Evans 239,524 current rank(3,897 Ave rank last 7 years)

For some, 50k is a target.
For some, 100k is a target.

Yeah. Depends on perspective. From one perspective above 50k is a position higher than 50k, so 1-49999, from the other it is a number >50000. Obviously only the latter is always bad.

Frankly, I don't feel I'm doing well if I don't get into the top 10k. Last season was my first in FPL, I took some punts to make ground and felt I failed completely. I was somewhere between 25k and 30k in the end (checked that this winter as it was asked). So, as that was crappy, being out of top 25k at least is bad, and out of top 50k definitely is bad.

So, basically, I'm with you. Anything worse than top 10k is a failure.

The minimum objective is to get in there. I was very much achieving that this season, but the bloody GW26 storm dropped me almost 15k down to around 20k. I had five City and Everton players and round that I expected to make groun in turned completely miserable. I was back then chasing the top 1k, but now I think I would feel okay to get back into top 10k. Not far from it currently, and I think less than 30 points from top 5k too, so even that is still possible.

I suppose it depends on the individual. If you're constantly getting top 10k finishes you'd be pulling your hair out wondering what's gone wrong. Simple answer is it can happen to anyone. For me a good season is top 5 or 10k because that seems the consensus. I've only managed that once myself unfortunately.

A good start helps a lot, but not everything. From experience, I have had a pretty tough start this and last year and managed a decent end with relatively modest TV. A good start is definitely not the be all end all, in my humble opinion of course.

Before I found FFS my aim was always top 20k. That then got revised to top 10k.

After last year anything was going to be a disappointment. If I can get inside top 50k this season I think I'll be satisfied now, think top 10k is too far gone.

Nah Mourinho doesn't trust any of his other attackers enough to rest Hazard. Especially after losing their last 2, they'll want to bounce back big vs Stoke (who are in form and won't be easy)

And Hazard is freakingly fit player. At most, Mou will take Hazard out on second half if they're winning.

He definitely didn't look off the pace. Chelsea looked very much out of ideas attackingly, but that wasn't because of him. Mourinho did not count that they would be down after just minutes, and PSG just made their quality count on the second half. End of story.

Gerrard to Silva looks a good move. Although if you already have Toure and a ManC defender and want Aguero then this is not an option. I'm thinking Eriksen could be a good alternative - fixtures looks strong.

I have 2FTs using one for Gerrard to Silva. Already gave Zab and and Yaya. If Agueros is fit I will free up finds getting rid of Zab and doing Sturridge to Aguero. Not the greatest plan but it should work out I hope.

He's got to go for me, as there's too much uncertainty. The 9 yellows mean he'll be at risk of starting, or at best a chance to be hauled off if the game is won. He's also relying solely on set pieces/pens for returns. Which seeing as Suarez seems to have taken over FK duties, and Coutinho is taking a lot of the corners, is not ideal. All of that plus the fact you have Nasri and Silva in the same bracket with more games, more attacking potential and less uncertainty over minutes, makes it an easy decision for me.

The tough call is who for.

Drogba hattrick last day of the 2009/10 season. He stole the ball from Frank Lampard to score a penalty as well. This led to me winning the FFS Paddy Power Cup plus my cash mini league. A brace wouldn't have been good enough as main rivals captained RVP, who scored.

I will dine out on that moment of glory forever.

I did more or less the opposite last season to my hit a week every week strategy this season. I started with all the Belgians in the prem (ten of them) and never transferred them in or out for the entire season...only used the remaining five places in the squad for transfers. It was a great team and did well....

Wow, beautiful strategy and must have paid well! Just think about Lukaku's, Benteke's, Vermaelen's, Fellaini's and others hauls last season. You must have transferred Vermaelen and Fellaini out at some point for sure? Vermaelen missed like the whole spring season.

No...kept them in, Mirallas missed a lot as well...Slowly, slowly catchy monkey and done with some really odd formations but with some great picks and the money left over from a cheap front line meant I had a strong overall squad in midfield and defence ahead of the game. Bale, Wally and Michu as rotating mids in and out...bliss.

I only started in GW3 due to holidays which was why I decided to just go for something novel. Finished about 100th out of about 20k...murdered my mini leagues though.

Not bad overall, especially without two first GW's. I did worse than you and started GW1 and didn't have any obsessed strategy.

Dunno...have to look at which country had a decent core to the squad...It only works if it leaves enough space for transfer activity for non nationals....either that or go for something like England only....Narrowing down your options is actually a great strategy...

                        The ten Belgians last season

                        MIgnolet

                        Kompany Vermaelen Vertonghen

                        Hazard Fellaini Dembele

Lukaku Benteke Mirallas (he was a forward last season)

And enough left over to bring Bale, Wally, Michu Baines and co in and out at will..NO RVP, or any other forwards for that matter.

I can't remember one single great moment for me in FPL. I guess I'm the glass half empty guy then. I guess there are some, though, I just can't seem to remember any.

we should put our half empty glasses together

My favorite was Huth in home game against Sunderland. He scored twice and assisted once in a 3-2 victory. I watched it live, it was amazing. I love Huth.

Don't remind me. Got the captain wrong each time.

This GW's best thing must have been tripling on Palace in January. Speroni, Ward and Puncheon got me some nice points. I even had them all on bench for that Spurs match! (Punch penalty miss)

For many the worst must be the Zigic(c) a couple of season ago. I dodged that one.

Best for me was Lampard(c) in my ML in 2008 when he scored 4 GLS vs Derby. No one in my ML owned him.

                        http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/chelsea-6-derby-county-1-lampard-hits-four-as-derby-reel-under-chelsea-backlash-795082.html

Worst for me was Zamora(c) in a Fulham DGW when everyone went Demsey(c). BZ played 20 minutes I think over the 2 fixtures and scored like 2 points while Dempsey got a 20+.

Yeah, the Rooney(c) when we all scored 160+ in a DGW don't count.

The season where everything snowed out and most of us only had 3 players playing and Tevez scored some points was hilarious. Was the GW Ave not less then 10 or something?

It was in the days of setting the (c) on value/form.

Can't say I miss those days.

Owning both Nolan (3 goals) and Ameobi (2 goals) for the 5-1 against Sunderland. Also captained Nolan.

                          That was a good day.

best moment was when i held on to dzeko and he scored 4 times (21 points) at spurs.

worst moment was the day after when rooney (the player i let go for dzeko in my wildcard) scored a hattrick with 2 assists (23 points) against arsenal.

Clint Dempsey's double gameweek heroics over the years. I remember captaining him in a double pretty much won my mini league one year, and he even saved his brace for the second game to up the tension.

First GW last season, having both Michu and Petric. Even more funny with Petric doing his disappearance act shortly after. Ranked 258 overall that week, a shame it didnt last the season. Have some good memories of Sessegnon the spring of 11/12, he was on fire.

And not very far back, but getting -1 on JT after he scores an OG giving Liverpool the chance to go top of PL was great 😀

worst moment was in 09/10 season when I had just made it into top 1k, I transferred out Lampard and he scored 4 and due to all other big players missing for some reason everyone got him as emergency (c). I dropped from 700 something to outside top 1k.

Best: Captaining Defoe when he scored 5 vs Wigan (2009-10).

Worst: Being equal first in my mini-league at full-time on the final day of the 2011-12 season... but then losing by 1 after bonus points were awarded.

                              currently have:

                              boruc/adrian
                              cahill/williamson/chester/demel/ward
                              hazard/toure/nasri/mata/noone
                              stur/suarez/lukaku
                              2 FT 0,5m itb

i want to replace sturridge for dzeko/aguero but not sure whether to drop mata this week or next. and also not sure whether to bring in barkley or eriksen.

                              A) get eriksen now for mata and then do aguero>stur and jagielka>demel in wk 34
                              B) get barkley now for mata and do aguero>stur and jagielka/coleman>demel in wk 34
                              C) get dzeko and barkley/eriksen now and then go coleman/jagielka>demel in wk34

risk of dzeko is of course rotation and aguero not sure if he'll play much if at all in wk 34? what is the best option?

Hi all, any advice would be kindly appreciated if you can spare a moment 🙂

                                Boruc,

                                Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Coleman

                                Silva, Yaya, Hazard, Mirallas

                                Lukaku, Sturridge, Suarez

                                Davis, Noone, Marriapa, Bruce

I have 2 FTS and 0.2 in the bank. Struggling to decide what to do. Mirallas is a rotation risk, but he has done well for me since I brought him in and has a DGW coming up. Double Chelsea defense is looking dicey, but they have been solid for so long, who knows? They may justify a bit more faith going forward.

I'll be requiring another city player soon, but with the Aguero situation so unclear :/ Lallana looks good as ever, but Mirallas to him seems pretty sideward.

Wow that team is so good, there's nothing I can think of.. Perhaps Boruc to Mannone/Speroni with DGW in mind and to save 0.2/0.3 if you can't come up with any other transfers

Would keep mirallas for the DGW

Saints have conceded 2 or more in 4 of last 6, including at home against Norwich and away to West Ham and goal shy Spurs. Seen they are visiting the place where every PL defence is ripped to shreds, I would not be so confident about their form.

                                  maybe ivanovic ----> zabaleta/demichelis

i think you should use 1 transfer this week because you have reached max saved transfers, so if you don't want to do the above one, maybe davis ----> harper to give that rotation option with the goalkeepers, or boruc ---> mannone if you think those 2 dgws will be profitable...get rid of mirallas for lallana after the double, and if aguero is fit you can do sturridge ----> aguero and downgrade ivan to some cheapie...

Was considering a city defender, they are against SOU this week though whilst Chelsea have Stoke at home, seems like a decent bet for a clean sheet. Your right though, I should use one FT. As above, not sure about that Sunderland form situation.

If Aguero was fit, it would be an easy choice. But as is, he is just confusing things.

I would've agreed with the ivan -> city defender, but not for this week.. and it's probably a better idea to save that 3rd city player slot until aguero situation becomes clearer after this weekend

Nice. Almost identical to mine. 🙂 I have only one Chelski defender, but I think Zaba can do in place of Ivanovic and I can get Adrian on goal instead of Boruc at Etihad. You need one more City player in my opinion, and could do with a better bench.

I know that ain't ideal, but rather Big Sam's West Ham GK at home against big boys than anyone at Etihad.

I mean, I know they have conceded a lot, time to time, especially against big teams this season, and SaS ain't what you want against your GK. But this is a choice between two sub-prime options, and Hammers also can sometimes pull that 0-0 when they only focus to defence, and Suarez ain't half as good away as he is at home. Away at City, on the other hand, is a few goals at least is guaranteed. Let's say, with Adrian, I'm confident it will be 3 or less conceded with Boruc I would expect 2 or more.

Stats: Pool has scored over three only thrice this season away from home, been left to 1 or less 6 times, and Hammers has not once conceded more than 3 at home, while they have 9 times kept opponent in 1 or less. City has scored less than 2 in only 3 occasions at home in PL this season, 50% of times scoring 4 or more, and while Saints boast a great defensive record all season long, they have recently conceded 3 at Spurs and West Ham and even 2 at home against Norwich. So they are conceding against any team that has any scoring potential. And city has a lot of that.

Cheers, definitely want +1 city for the DGW. Not sure if that will be an attacker or defender yet though. Would want to hurry up and make my mind up 😀

I agree about the bench, but so close to the line, i'm reluctant to spend there. Maybe double up on Crystal palace for the DGW could be an option, grab a cheap defender like ward to go with Marriapa.

Let's say it takes 2400 points to win, if you make transfers every week and change your captain but don't put much thought into it you should scrape ~1700 points (70%) easily.

If you keep your finger on the pulse, read and watch games, you should manage upwards of ~2100 points (90%).

If you want to win you need quite a bit of luck, good captains, all your punts to come off and your players need to stay fit when you make early transfers.

The so called "Fallen Giants" bad seasons still fall within the realms of bad luck, and perhaps a slight dropping of the ball.

That assumes a base score of 0 though - we can see from the dead teams that those who play with no consciousness (make no transfers/changes to captains) get well over 1,000 points.

going for differentials when chasing caused my worst rank by almost 30k.
that season they guy i was chasing actually slipped at the end but instead of being in striking distance i'd simply compounded the defecit trying to mix it up. and this was never mixing up the captaincy, this was just transfers. i imagine going all out differentials has the potential to get really messy.
very much against chasing tactics. maybe if i tried it 5 times it would work once, 1 fail out of 1 was enough for me to not try again though. don't even check rival's teams these days, just look at the league table

That's my story this season. Started with Ramsey and me refusing to get him. Fell behind.

Then I went Sturridge(c) in Liverpool's DGW a couple of days ago and sold Snoddy to Sterling(-4).

ML leader went Suarez(c) and Snoddy scored 7pts more then my Sterling.

50pt deficit should have come down to 31, but didn't.

Silva/Mata just compounded the problem last week.

                                  The fat lady has sung.

Very easy mistakes to make though.. I captained Sturridge too.
I got lucky with Ramsey though 😀

Is Hazard a must have from now until the end?

I got rid for the DGW and getting him back would mean either playing an uber 4th mid (Ki) most weeks, or avoiding Aguero for the DGW.

I was thinking this earlier, if Schurrle is given a couple of games up front in a row he could be invaluable.

But he'll never be safe from rotation.

Especially since I don't have Hazard.
