Van Gaal Confirmed as United Boss

After weeks of speculation, Manchester United finally confirmed Louis Van Gaal as their new manager earlier this afternoon.

The Dutchman has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford and has named Ryan Giggs as his assistant manager, with Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout coming on board as assistant coaches.

Van Gaal will take over the helm once the Netherlands’ participation in this summer’s World Cup comes to an end and is expected to be handed a considerable budget as the Red Devils attempt to put last year’s miserable seventh place finish behind them. Speaking to the club’s official website, the 62-year-old went on to say:

“It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are. This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I’m sure we will make history.”

We’ll have a Moving Target piece on Van Gaal’s installation later in the week as we look at the potential knock-on effect, both from a tactical and personnel perspective, his appointment is expected to have.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Kieran Trippier

It seems like the whole of FFS is getting a bit giddy at the prospect of Burnley's Kieran Trippier being in FPL next season. A budget-friendly, assist-machine defender is the stuff of dreams apparently, and few seem to be in any doubt that he is a 'must have' for next season. I'm certain he'll be in a staggering number of RMTs before we see GW1 kick off but I'm not so sure we should be falling over ourselves to invest.

Most of the nailed on defenders from the promoted clubs come in at £4.5m but there's usually at least one from each team available at a cheeky £4.0m. Best case scenario: Trippier is in the £4.5m bracket. Worst case scenario: FPL assess his potential in the same exuberant manner as many round here and slap a hefty £5.0m price tag on him. That's a 0.5/1.0 premium you'll be paying on the basis of attacking potential - a risky game to play when attacking returns are difficult to predict. Unless you're planning to play a Burnley defender every game there's a good chance you'll bench some of those attacking points which starts to negate the reason to own him in the first place.

I've run some stats to try to help me decide if he really will be worth it.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trippier's Key Figures From Last Season

    Appearances: 41 (21 home, 20 away)
    Goals: 1 (scored at home)
    Assists: 12 (7 home, 5 away)

Burnley's Key Figures From Last Season

    Games: 46
    Goals: 72 (37 home, 35 away)
    Goals Conceded: 37 (14 home, 23 away)
    Clean Sheets: 18 (11 home, 7 away)

The following are some calculations I've performed to try to estimate his possible FPL performances. (There will be some numbers which don't quite add up as I've displayed them rounded to the nearest integer, the calculations are performed on the accurate, unrounded numbers though.)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we were to work on a strict pro rata basis and assume Burnley and Trippier would perform at these levels in the Premier League with the only difference being a reduced number of fixtures, I calculate Trippier's potential stats as:

    Appearances: 34 (17 home, 17 away)
    Goals: 1 (scored at home)
    Assists: 10 (6 home, 4 away)

In FPL terms this would translate into:

    68 appearance points
    53 clean sheet points
    -9 points for goals conceded
    30 points for assists
    5 points for a goal
    147 points total

This would be at Fonte (149), Cahill (147) and Zabaleta (146) standards from the season just gone.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we were to assume Burnley will match Crystal Palace's performances from this season, that would be:

    Appearances: 34 (17 home, 17 away)
    Goals: 1 (scored at home)
    Assists: 5 (3 home, 2 away)

In FPL terms this would translate into:

    68 appearance points
    43 clean sheet points
    -16 points for goals conceded
    17 points for assists
    3 points for a goal
    114 points total

This would be at Kolarov (116), C. Davies (115) and Demel (112) standards from the season just gone.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we were to assume Burnley will match Hull's performances from this season, that would be:

    Appearances: 34 (17 home, 17 away)
    Goals: 1 (scored at home)
    Assists: 6 (4 home, 2 away)

In FPL terms this would translate into:

    68 appearance points
    36 clean sheet points
    -17 points for goals conceded
    19 points for assists
    3 points for a goal
    108 points total

This would be at Azpilicueta (109), Shawcross and Cameron (108) standards from the season just gone.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we were to assume Burnley will match Cardiff's performances from this season, that would be:

    Appearances: 34 (17 home, 17 away)
    Goals: 0
    Assists: 5 (3 home, 2 away)

In FPL terms this would translate into:

    68 appearance points
    25 clean sheet points
    -33 points for goals conceded
    16 points for assists
    3 points for a goal
    78 points total

This would be at Mariappa, Smalling (79) and R. Martin (78) standards from the season just gone.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Conclusion

With kind opening fixtures and a £4.5m price tag I may be tempted to take a chance, anything else and I'll be steering clear - if I'm paying for attacking potential I don't want to see half of it wasted on the bench and I doubt I'll want to play a Burnley defender every week.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Other Notes

    - I haven't included positive points for Bonus as it's too complex a system to take a stab at for me but fair to say Trippier would earn a boost through this.
    - I haven't included negative points for Yellow/Red Cards or Own Goals.
    - 'FPL assists' may boost his figures (although this doesn't have a big impact on everyone - Trippier's typical style of assist is probably more fairly reflected in the figures than many).
    - Burnley's record last season was more similar to Cardiff's promotion season than either of the other two clubs.

This is obviously massively over the top analysis and blatantly unnecessary but things are quiet and it's the kind of thing I do in the pre-season 🙂

True, although I got about 30 points off my bench the whole of last season - I rarely pick rotation risks so I think my autosubs only saw action about 8 times!

That was one of the surprising things about the Gargatron i.e. how little we actually get from our autosubs.

It would be interesting to know how often our third sub was used throughout the season on average as this could tell us whether we should really be looking at putting a budget possibly non playing player there if they are the cheapest.

I thought that but actually my tactics were slightly more complex (and probably the worse for it) than that.

Whilst in any given week I didn't need my bench, I did rotate my players so that my third bench player one week may be in the team next week. I actively used my squad of 15 so by writing one of them off as a permanent bench warmer I'd reduce my options in the rest of the team.

Whether that extra budget would make up for the loss in flexibility is an interesting question with no simple answer.

I did much the same thinking about it.

I wanted every player in my team to be able to contribute but as the season wore on I had 4 big defenders and collins from wham who was not playing and if you are going down the route of 3 big defenders then you could very easily get away with a 4.0m non playing defender if there was no solid 4.0 playing options.

I guess early doors when budget is tight we might have to go for some gambles in the cheaper positions but since you don't know who will be dropped or do well etc we do really need to be picking players we think will start as we might need them.

Absolutely. I was mildly hamstrung early in the season by my foolish Johnny Williams pick - he got limited minutes then injured himself for the season. It was at least a month before I transferred him out as there were always more pressing matters than my cheap 5th midfielder - the reduced flexibility was uncomfortable as I didn't have the budget to have a really strong core.

Later in the season may be a different matter.

Cheers Dino. There's something about pre-season that motivates me to do these things - I think it's partially the longevity of posts during the quieter times as you point out, I think it's also that with no games being played there are no injuries/suspensions/transfers to worry about and it frees up room to explore this kind of thing in more depth. I find I have far less to say during the season as everyone else says it first and better 🙂

OK so lets put all this into perspective. This guy is going to be playing in the Premier League. Burnley are going to be playing in the Premier League. Neither player nor team are prepared for what lies ahead.

The risk you court with this defender is he could deliver you between zero and -2 points every gameweek if Burnley "do a Derby".

However, he will be in my team if priced right and will be used very very sparingly, at home, to teams who I judge wont destroy Burnley.

Cheers TFF, a bit of both really. He's more of a Baines without the goal threat I suppose - plenty of set piece delivery and he seems to get forward to put in a lot of open play crosses.

          b)a weaker team and
c)less license to go forward as he did in the Championship

A toughie to decide this. I'll be staying away if priced at 5 or more

I'm pretty much certain he'll reward his owners at certain points in the season but there'll be some patience required to hit those moments. The real thing can be frustrating for long periods so I fear a smart price Baines will drive me up the wall!

Nice piece. Its all down to price at 4.5£m hes in everyones GW1 team.

And of course theres playing the fixtures. I wouldn't be playing Trippier away to Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City etc just like I wouldn't play a Hull defender for example.
He's reminding be a bit of Nicky Shorey.

He scored attacking points at a 4-3 at Old Trafford if I'm correct.

Suppose that highlights your point re: patience for returns and the unpredictability of attacking returns.

Exactly - with a cheap defender who accumulates points through clean sheets you don't bench that many because you see most of them coming and can play the odds. When it's a player with attacking threat it's much harder.

It's the key principle behind the first half of "never bench never captain" for Baines - it's too hard to predict a penalty/a perfect cross so you take the chance even in hard away games. The trouble doing that with Trippier is Burnley may get smashed in those games!

it's a very minor thing and i'll be honest i'm about to read this all now rather than have already but trippier was given 14 opta assists. seem to have same figures as the scout article in here. a bit strange other figures could be less than opta as normally they are the strict ones so other sources would either be equal or higher.
anyway, off to read it now

Ah, I haven't cited sources as they were many but I settled on starting from the same stats as in the Burnley promoted article here for the sake of consistency. I also didn't sweat it too much as we all know FPL assist figures can deviate significantly anyway and without trying to dig out Youtube footage of all the Burnley goals from last season I wasn't going to trust the accuracy 100% anyway. Interesting that OPTA have more though - are they all league assists?

NB - There are some sites which credit Trippier with a second league goal last season but again, I went with the FFS approved stats.

14 opta wise. probbaly guess about 17 fpl wise, for example the goal later downgraded to an own goal would be another assist, just not an opta one.
but yeah i saw the 12 figure on transfermarkt a while ago too, was surprised as usually it's higher or equal, not lower.
anyway read it now, and you've got a +1 here

      Great post.
The only thing is that I often play cheap defenders away from home..and generally only bench when playing against teams in the top 8 - making it less likely I'll miss out on attacking returns as the team is generally less likely to score.
Seems to be a very good player though.

I remember when everyone was tossing themselves off over Neil Clement. "He scored 9 goals last year and he is a defender!!"

I decided to ignore last season's stats. Anyone can score in that Mickey Mouse Division One. Premiership is a different kettle of fish.

...then he scores two goals in his first two matches.

My tip: jump on the Trippier bandwagon.

He could, that touches on one of my biggest problems with him though - clean sheets, whilst not completely predictable, are still easier to predict than assists. A rotation built on clean sheet likelihood can be decent (although even rotating 2 goalkeepers frequently ends in tears!) but a rotation where someone's key strength is their assist potential is bound for many benched points in my eyes which means a £4.0m Burnley defender may be only fractionally less well scoring.

I'm probably just jaundiced by my own poor benching decisions though 🙂

But if you look at it the other way, you'll have a player in a three way rotation who offers more than just the chance of a clean sheet, he offers attacking threat as well. Even if his team concedes, he may well get an assist.

Yup, and that's going to be the big decision I guess - will paying the premium for him over (a hypothetical) £4.0m Burnley defender be worth it? If you played both of them every game it almost certainly would be, if you pick and choose when to play them you can get stung - it's all about risk/reward and your attitude to risk management 🙂

To be fair his assessment should make people more interested in signing him as only five 4.5m defenders would have beaten his total last season (Fonte Shaw Clyne Delaney and Curtis Davies) beat his predicted total (with davies and demel only slightly higher) if Burnley turn out to be a Hull and GW has not taken account of bonus points.

If GW's analysis is putting you off him then you might need to question your expectations from cheap defenders.

It's all about options and FPL tactics - if you don't trust Burnley enough to play a defender from them very often and there's a nailed on £4.0m player then you may as well get them I reckon. If you're prepared to be a bit bolder and give Trippier a chance to earn attacking points by playing him in more games than not then it may work out.

No, I was more relying on his attacking threat and not Burnley's defensive capabilities. After reading GW's post, I think I'd prefer a cheap player from a team who has more chance of keeping a clean sheet, and not rely on assists. Because as he said, we'll probably bench him for a lot of his assists, if he continues his form.

Has anyone got any experience with organising a sweepstakes?

I'm doing one in work for the World Cup. I'm ok organising it for who wins but it's been suggested that I should add a top goalscorer prize. I've never done before as I've felt it was too hard but they seem to want it. What's the best way to add it in?

Should I just add it an extra to the team prize (so if you draw Portugal and Ronaldo gets it you win the prize) have a separate draw with all the teams in and work on the same basis, or pick 1 player from every team and award the prize to whichever of those players scores highest?

The argument against that is that the top scorer could well come from a top 3 team anyway, but adding players into the mix complicates things IMO (e.g do you pick Messi or Kun? Do you pick Muller or Klose? What Spaniard do you pick?)

I'd just do it as if Messi or Aguero was the top goal scorer, then whoever has Argentina wins. Any German player wins it, then whoever had Germany wins it.

Or you could hand out teams to everyone to win the World Cup, and then another set for the top goal scorer to come from that country.

but the guy who suggested it said, 1 player per team. You could do it your way, but just picking a team seems easy. If you get Argentina, Messi, Aguero etc would win the money.

From the Premier League website, something that I wanted to know and I'm sure most if you do as well.

The fixture list for the 2014/15 season will be announced on Wednesday 18 June at 09:00 BST.
The first set of changes take place when television companies select the first group of matches they would like to screen live. This usually happens within a few weeks of the original list coming out.
At around the same time, the clubs that are playing in Europe will examine the list to see if there are any matches which need to be moved. Once teams progress to the later rounds of the other cup competitions, League fixtures can be altered. In this instance we always consult with the local police and the clubs concerned.

ROFL yeah looks like it eh Som?

Tbf I think most of those comments are from people that didn't get on with him or that had questionable attitudes.

Sir Bobby Robson once called him "the top of the tree". "He is a genius, the best I've ever seen on a training pitch," Mehmet Scholl

"To make things even worse, he was having all kinds of trouble to keep star player Rivaldo in check. The Brazilian refused to play on the left wing any longer after winning the Ballon d'Or and Fifa Player of the Year award in 1999, but van Gaal didn't budge and benched the forward, much to the dismay of the fans" - Rooney be ware!!!

Oh I think he's absolutely perfect for the role to be honest, players at United need a right kick up the arse and he's the perfect man for that. Some of them that are willing to work might have a really terrific future under him, others will struggle big time and I am absolutely fine with that 😀 My own opinion on the man is that he is unquestionably arrogant but it's better to have the arrogance in the manager than in the players. Once the players rule the dressing room, that's it (as poor old Moyesie found out)

So confirmed at last. I'm not convinced the good times are returning to OT any time soon with VG in charge. It will all depend upon whether the existing players like it up em or whether we are in for a few dressing room bust ups and stand offs, i suspect we might be...time will tell. Good move in the long run though.

it all depends on the players recruited.

Van Gaal is a step up from Moyes.

I reckon they need at least 6 new quality signings to challenge for top 4.

To be honest, Van Gaal should have been there before Moyes. (I understand why he wasn't of course) but I think the big egos needed a reality check and Moyes was too kind to them in many regards. I think long term this is definitely a good thing.

Agreed. We have only scratched the surface of what went on under Moyes but it wasn't a happy camp. Ego is the right word, either directed at Moyes or between the players themselves. Wrong manager altogether in retrospect and way out of his depth in terms of man management.

Exactly this. Winning the dressing room was impossible for him and no help from the board.

I did think he really improved DDG by bringing in Woods, I thought they really formed a good relationship.

You can say that the players aren't good enough, certainly some of them are not. But to win the PL (albeit with the weakest side to win the PL) and revert to 7th is a bit overboard, something else was going on. Now I don't doubt the players aren't good enough but when they aren't even arsed trying to play for Moyes that's when they're really exposed.

I do think RVP, Roo, Janu, Kagawa, Mata, DDG, Rafael (despite insanity) were good enough. Carrick could have been good enough but he really didn't bother. Fellaini isn't good enough, nor is Cleverley, Evra knackered, Vidic is good but too old and injury prone, Rio not good enough, I personally don't think Welbeck is either, Fletcher wasn't, Nani and Young weren't (Valencia was okay). Hernandez unfortunately is not well rounded enough. So while there is dead weight, there was some talent there too.

Agreed certainly some talent (Personnsly think Januzaj is an amazing prospect ) allot of the players you listed play in the similar positions .

Actually would not write of fellaini either

The 1st to 7th I think mainly is down to you losing one the greatest managers (for his club) of all time

Football has changed with the 4-2-3-1 fluid attacking line up used by your rivals
And United have not adapted quickly enough yet

Exactly, felt a lot of sympathy for him in some ways. I know people will point to the money he's earned now etc. and that's fair but I still thought to pit him against a dressing room full of PL winners (some of whom were carried by other players and had a grossly incorrect self perception) was just unfair. I was very critical of RVP for seemingly throwing a hissy fit but the more I think about it and the more I see I think it was Rooney pulling the strings and causing a lot of issues as well.

I don't think it's Moyes is a bad manager , It's Fergie was an amazing manager who can get wins and trophies out of a squad ...even when the squad is the not the best

I remember when United had injuries , it affected them a lot less than other teams ...because fergie could get the replacements together and get the 3 points

Exactly but you have to wonder why. If I'm a manager who has won everything under the sun and I tell you what to do, you'll probably do it. If I'm a manager that, on a trophy or medal level, has nowhere near what you have, you will question my tactics. This only really applies to very successful teams, I'm absolutely certain from day 1 they were challenging Moyes' tactics and it really was not fair in many regards.

No doubt about it he was dealing with the left overs of SAF's final season...and it was Rooney who had the biggest axe to grind...He's a pain in the neck most of the time.

Not sure it was what he had won that made players toe the line but more to do with the fact that Saf was the absolute power there and every player that went against him no matter how big they were got the boot (some of them literally).

I reckon some of the senior players knew they could push Moyes knowing the club would back them over the manager and Moyes didn't really have any experience with dealing with this whereas at least lvg has.

Tbf saf had the same problem himself when he landed at Utd and he had to get rid of a lot of senior players to get the team playing the way he wanted. Who knows if even saf would have been able to take over Utd in the way Moyes did?

Indeed. However I am very much a lone voice on Rooney amongst my circle of friends

Then again, for a long time, I was on De Gea as well

Really. They are happy with his new contract are they? Blimey.

                Where are they on Nani?

I'd say yes. van gaal won't take any nonsense and making a stand with rooney will be the first thing that will happen if rooney doesn't do a muttley.

What say you lads? Intentional shot on goal or not? http://www.mlssoccer.com/video/2014/05/17/goal-obafemi-martins-chips-impossible-angle

think it's intentional, especially with the complete absence of any team mates in the area. it's not *that* incredible at all for a lefty, a quick look at the keeper then go for it

I'm in between on it. The Seattle Times and NBC Sports implied it was most likely a cross, and I might say that I lean towards that notion. Plus, Oba usually does his whole backflip thing after scoring. This time around, he seemed to be laughing too hard, which could suggest that he was surprised it went in.

Intentional in my view. Can't believe they have fire shooting out when the goal is scored, so very painfully American.

Ha. I suspected a sort of anti-American sentiment would crop up. That was too predictable. What's more embarrassing for me is the artificial turf. And, Seattle isn't the only team that has such a surface. That being said, the league is entertaining enough. Does well to fill the void left by EPL's break in action.

We are all praying for Rooney to leave and for Mata to get the coveted 'hole' position

RVP & Mata would then be golden.

Celtic play their champ league qualifier two days after World Cup final.
Not very long for Fraser to fly back and play

        Here's a scenario...

Imagine if the Dutch squad implodes before the World Cup even starts (happened many times before) or dont get out of a group containing Spain, Chile and Australia (not that implausible)

Van Gaal could be at the training ground with his new team a lot quicker than expected. But his reputation could be in tatters.

even better, the squad implodes france style with rvp the bad boy ring leader. van gaal wants nothing to do with him next season

We won't beat SPain so at best we'll finish 2nd in the group, though that's probably a 50/50 chance, optimistically. Best case scenario we face Brazil in the first knockout round and we'll lose to them.
