World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday One, Day Three

James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado deliver the Fantasy returns as Colombia chalk up a comfortable win over Greece. Joel Campbell steers Costa Rica to a shock triumph over Uruguay, Mario Balotelli nods Italy to victory over England and Serge Aurier serves up a pair of assists as Ivory Coast overcome Japan 2-1:

Rodriguez Shines in Colombia Cruise
A popular pick amongst Fantasy managers, the Monaco man was handed a change of position as Jose Pekerman shuffled his options to cope with the loss of Radamel Falcao. Rodriguez was mainly utilised on the left in a 4-2-2-2 during qualifying but was afforded a central role in a switch to 4-2-3-1 for the South Americans against Greece and caught the eye with a performance that bristled with attacking intent. Firing six efforts on goal (twice the number of any player on the pitch) the 22-year-old grabbed his side’s late third in a comprehensive win and looks pivotal to Colombia’s prospects in the attacking third, with more investment on the way ahead of games against Ivory Coast and Japan.

Cuadrado and Gutierrez Also in the Points
Many had selected Juan Cuadrado over Rodriguez as a route into the Colombia midfield after the former came in at a cheaper price in most Fantasy games. Cuadrado arrived on the back of a season which saw him score 11 goals and provide five assists for Fiorentina and his creativity came to the fore with a pair of assists from a role on the right to eclipse his fellow midfielder for Fantasy returns. Up top, Teofilo Gutierrez seems to have won the race to lead the line on Falcao’s absence. Handed the lone forward role ahead of Porto’s Jackson Martinez, Gutierrez vindicated Pekerman’s decision by firing the second in a 3-0 rout, though his withdrawal on 76 minutes suggests he could be replaced late on in games as the South Americans look for fresh legs up front.

Greeks Offer Little in Disappointing Defeat
Considering they scored a mere 12 goals over 10 qualifying games, yesterday’s failure to find the net was hardly surprising. Indeed, the 3-0 reverse means Fernando Santos’ side have now lost six of their last seven World Cup games and have failed to score in any of those defeats – in terms of lessons learned, steering clear of Greece’s assets seems a sensible move, with upcoming opponents Japan and Ivory Coast looking good value options at both ends of the pitch.

Santos may well choose to freshen up his side after such a lethargic display. Fulham’s Kostas Mitroglou and veteran Giorgos Karagounis both featured as subs late on and may well be called upon for the upcoming clash with the Japanese as Greek attempt to avoid an early exit.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, only one player from each side managed five or more recovered balls – Colombia right-back Juan Zuniga, with seven, and Greece central midfielder, Konstantinos Katsouranis, with five.

Campbell Inspires Shock Costa Rica Win
The Arsenal forward sparked a stunning second-half turnaround as Jorge Luis Pinto’s side shook Group D by sweeping aside Uruguay 3-1. Fielded as a lone striker in a 5-4-1 formation, Campbell’s pace and strength on the break troubled the South Americans time and again – a 54th minute equaliser was followed by the assist for Marcos Urena’s late strike, after Campbell was moved to the right to accommodate his fellow forward. While the youngster’s display underlined his ability to produce on the big stage, upcoming games against Italy and England will perhaps deter Fantasy managers to invest in Costa Rica’s options, with other sides set for far favourable fixtures in the final two group games.

Suarez Absence Stifles Uruguay
Hot favourites to sweep aside their underdog opponents, the South Americans only had a converted Edinson Cavani spot-kick to show for their efforts in a shock 3-1 defeat. Uruguay turned in a lacklustre display that seemed devoid of any urgency – after the break, in particular, they were second best in every department and looked sluggish at both ends of the pitch. Undoubtedly, Luis Suarez’ failure to feature was key. With his side trailing in the second period, Oscar Tabarez’ decision to leave the Liverpool forward on the bench certainly indicates he is not yet ready to return to action after recently undergoing minor knee surgery, and with only four days until a showdown with England, another absence for Suarez could be critical. One player who Tabarez will definitely be without is Maxi Pereira – the right-back is suspended after receiving his marching orders in the dying minutes for a shocking challenge on Campbell.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three Uruguay player registered seven recovered balls apiece –centre-back Diego Godin, central midfielder Arevalo Rios and left-back Martin Caceres. Centre-half Giancarlo Gonzalez, with six, was the standout performer for the victors.

Italy Front Three in the Points
Cesare Prandelli ditched his preferred 3-5-2 formation and rolled out a 4-3-3 for last night’s win. Mario Balotelli led the line, with Claudio Marchisio and Antonio Candreva on the flanks, and all three delivered the points for their Fantasy owners – the former two bagged a goal apiece, whilst Candreva, who delivered 12 goals and six assists for Lazio last term, provided an assist in a narrow 2-1 victory and looks a decent shout as a budget-friendly option across the Fantasy games.

Prandelli’s selection certainly raised a few eyebrows. With Gianluigi Buffon injured, Salvatore Sirigu was handed a rare start between the posts, whilst three of the expected defensive starters – Ignazio Abate, Leonardo Bonucci and Mattia De Sciglio – warmed the bench. The Italy boss opted for Matteo Darmian, Gabriel Paletta and Andrea Barzagli instead, as Giorgio Chiellini shifted over to left-back – with so much uncertainty, it’s likely we will steer clear of the Italy defence, with Chiellini perhaps the only nailed-on option right now.

Sturridge Strike Not Enough for Three Lions
Roy Hodgson made one surprise selection in the England starting XI, with Raheem Sterling preferred ahead of Adam Lallana. The Liverpool man was fielded in “the hole” behind Daniel Sturridge, with Wayne Rooney moved to the left, before a half-time reshuffle allowed the United man to shift centrally and Sterling wide right. In spite of his out of position berth for the first 45 minutes, Rooney still managed to provide the assist for Sturridge’s strike and looks more likely to be kept in the centre next time around, having improved after the break. Sturridge limped off towards the end of the match after a hefty challenge and his owners will be anxiously awaiting the prognosis ahead of a vital midweek match with Uruguay, as both sides look to recover from opening defeats.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Jordan Henderson was England’s main man for recovered balls, with seven to his name. Three of the back-four also impressed – Phil Jagielka managed six and full-backs Leighton Baines and Glen Johnson registered four apiece, whilst Chiellini (six) was Italy’s more impressive performer.

Aurier the Creator Ivory Coast
The highly-rated right-back played a pivotal part as Ivory Coast came from behind to get the better of Japan in the early hours of this morning. Aurier provided the assist for both goals in a 2-1 win – with Wilfried Bony and Gervinho supplying the finishing touches to the youngster’s raids down the flank – and underlined his capabilities as a cut-price option across the Fantasy games ahead of upcoming clashes with Colombia and Greece.

As expected, the Ivorians started the game in a 4-3-3 formation, though Sabri Lamouchi’s decision to opt for Wilfried Bony as the lone striker ahead of Didier Drogba was somewhat surprising. The veteran’s introduction, allied with a switch to 4-4-2 proved the turning point, however – the Africans scored both goals within four minutes of Drogba appearing from the bench to secure the points.

Honda Strike Not Enough for Japan
Alberto Zacherroni’s side have it all to do now after letting their lead slip. Milan’s Keisuke Honda – playing in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 – fired Japan into the lead in 15 minutes courtesy of an assist from left-back Yuto Nagatomo before their second-half capitulation. With just seven shots on goal compared to their opponents’ 21 efforts, they can count themselves fortunate to only have lost by such a narrow margin and with a victory over Greece in midweek vital to their prospects, the likes of Honda and Mainz’ Shinji Ozazaki will need to step up, whilst Zacherroni may freshen up his options for the lone striker role, with Yoichiro Kakitani offering an alternative to Yuya Osako up top.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ivory Coast were very consistent when it came to recovered balls, with eight of their starting XI managing four or more. Aurier and Chieck Tiote were the most impressive, with eight apiece, whilst Yaya Toure also caught the eye with five. For Japan, all of the back-four registered five or more, with full-backs Atsuto Uchida and Nagatomo the main men, producing eight and six respectively.

So i'm trying to work out how i can manipulate my subs so that I dont get stuck with anyone on the right most side of the pitch.
I've put all my players playing in 10hours in the right most point (Rojo, Pjanic)
Leaving players with 4 hours (Scharr) and 7 hours (Pogba, Evra, Valbuana) in the left position..
So when I wake up tomorrow (Australia), If Pogba/Valbuena score well.. they stay on.. if they score poorly i can sub them out and rearrange the formation without locking out the player on the right most side.
    Fool proof plan?

    My verdict on yesterdays game:

The defence was fairly solid for me, the two goals came as a result of a lack of concentration at a set piece which was very well worked by the Italians, and the defence being outnumbered as the Italians hit us on the break down the left hand side. The only real issue for me was the lack of protection down the left, which left Baines vs Candreva & Darmain on numerous occasions which caused trouble, but fortunately enough Hart came out to collect most of the balls into the danger area, as most of the deliveries were quite poorly placed.
Baines didn't have as much of an attacking threat as I had hoped, although Baines did put a superb ball into Rooney to create the goal. Jagielka & Cahill weren't really threatening from corners, mainly due to poor deliveries.

The midfield duo of Gerrard and Henderson were quite frustrating I thought. Both, particularly Gerrard, just seemed to continuously play the ball from left to right without much purpose, and Henderson didn't pick the ball up and drive at the defence enough to have as much of an effect as he has had for Liverpool this season, same with Wilshere when he came on.

The three in behind Sturridge worked quite well for me. Welbeck worked tirelessly for 60 minutes, and frequently dispossessed the Italians(particularly Chiellini) enabling us to hit them on the counter attack, but I feel he needed to take more risks on the ball rather than playing a backwards pass if he wanted to have a bigger effect on the game.
Sterling was my man of the match from an English perspective. He picked up the ball from deep and made an impact in the final third, although he still lacked that end ball to create the chance. Veratti just couldn't get near him, as Sterling used his physical presence and pure pace to drive past him. Sterling also did a fairly decent job at preventing Pirlo from playing many of those long field passes by closing him down(although Balotelli was offside quite frequently) and dispossessed Pirlo's midfield partners on occasions to start attacks.
Rooney just didn't perform for me. He was almost wasted out on the left hand side. Despite creating the goal, he didn't have much of an effect, even when he did play up front once Sturridge came off. The one chance he did have he put it just past the near post and really, in the World Cup, chances like those against a team like Italy, have to go in. Rooney also failed to track Darmain during the first half, but fortunately Darmain didn't really have the cutting edge going forward, otherwise it could've been a lot worse. I feel like Roy tried to shoehorn him into the side, when maybe someone like Lallana or barkley may've been a better option.

Sturridge had a decent game. The only frustrating thing about Sturridge was that he pulled out to the wing too often for me, meaning that if we did fashion a chance, he wasn't in the box to finish it. He could've made more runs beyond the defence also, especially against Paletta. He took his goal well, however, and I hope that he's ok to lead the line in what is a must win game against Uruguay.

If I was Roy Hodgson, i'd be tempted to make a couple of changes ahead of Thursday's game.

    - Play Sterling wide left. After Pereira's sending off against Costa Rica, a player of Sterling's quality could exploit the second choice full-back and really be that cutting edge.
    - Play Rooney in the No 10 role. The above change allows Rooney to come into his prefered role, something which will hopefully pay off and make him much more effective against a weak Uruguay defence, another positive being that he won't need to track back too often, so we won't be left vulnerable at the back. Another option is Barkley playing in there, although he is a tad raw and didn't have too much of an effect against a tiring Italian side last night.
    - Oxlade-Chamberlain/Lallana over Welbeck. As well as Welbeck played against the Italians, he lacks the attacking qualities to break down opposition that sit deep like the Uruguayans are likely to, so Oxlade-Chamberlain/Lallana's quality on the ball could be decisive in breaking down Uruguay.
    - Jones ahead of Henderson. This may sound controversial, but I feel Jones could do a similar job on Suarez as he has done against players like Ronaldo & Ozil in the past. He can close down Suarez early and not allow him time to turn into space and driving at the slow figures of Cahill and Jagielka by simply man marking him throughout the game. This could also allow Gerrard to play a bit further forward and with a bit more freedom, meaning he can display his attacking qualities which he still possesses, rather than play in that deep lying playmaker role.

I still don't understand Roy's decision to play Rooney on the left. He's supposedly the focal point of the team and bigged up ahead of the tournament yet he's played out of position and should be now be dropped after a bad game. Typical knee-jerking media only helped by Roy's poor decision.

Rooneys predicament is quite simple. You either play a system focused on Rooney or don't play him at all. Rooneys style of play is near impossible to fit in a system, you have to make other players play around him. This is exactly why he should be dropped in my opinion.

I didnt think Roo was that bad - however if he was planning on that formation, then Roy should better Full backs - both selected are known for attacking ability.

I would like to see the same shape deployed but with Stirling and Ox out wide (if fit) and Roo at no10

Barkley and Wellbeck from to come on on the hour. A lot of positives despite defeat.

It's pretty clear why Roy played Rooney on the left imo. He was trying to emulate Liverpool's system where Suarez plays off-centre and Sterling is central. He just didn't realise Rooney is nowhere near the player Suarez is.

Agree with some of what you said, I thought Henderson had a good game though. I don't think playing Rooney no. 10 will work either though. He just doesn't do enough defensively, meaning we'd play just 2 CMs which is just crazy in intl football imo.

Sturridge limping off might allow us to play this.

      Rooney
      Sterling - Barkley - Welbeck
      Gerrard - Henderson

I don't think we have a mobile or good enough CM partnership to play both Rooney and Sturridge, one has to drop out. Should be Rooney but if Sturridge is injured it will be him.

I wasn't that impressed by Henderson and though he was fairly average, and i'm not sure a midfield of him and Gerrard have enough defencive capabilities to deal with Suarez, so i'd have to sacrifice Henderson.
I disagree about the Rooney part, Uruguay play a bog standard 4-4-2, and we can essentially match that by playing Rooney in the No 10 role and don't need to play 3 in midfield. I'd give him another chance.

That's probably the most obvious change, but as I said it'd be controversial to drop Henderson for Jones and it's highly unlikely that that will happen, it's just what i'd do if I was in Roy's boots and I wanted to try and stop Suarez.

      +1 for effort.

I think GJ should also get a mention. He stepped his game up, and defended much better than he has been. Still not great, and he takes too much time on the, but a marked improvement from the friendlies.

On the Jones issue, I disagree. Henderson is much better in the middle, and Jones isnt good enough on the ball for midfield.

Rooney should be dropped. Period. No good on the wing, 10 or 9.

      Welbeck was great, keep him.

Have Ox and Barkley as subs.

      Lallana as a 10!

Agreed on the Johnson part, he was decent, but still nothing spectacular.

I feel Gerrard and Henderson won't be able to handle Suarez dropping into those pockets and aren't good enough defensively, so that's why i'd play Jones to try and stop world-class players like Suarez.

Not too sure about Rooney, one last chance, surely. Even if he gets hauled off at half time.

If Suarez plays though, wont he be left wing?

Also, Uruguays midfield is poor, so surely we should outplay them. Playing a CB in central midfield is very negative considering they are a very average side.

Suarez will probably play in that number 10 role, which is why I feel Henderson & Gerrard aren't capable enough as negative as it may be, Jones is better suited in there.

Last thing England needs is another unsettled line up.

Play the same team against Uruguay I say. England looked good, they'll only get better.

I honestly feel that if that game was played again and again it could go either way every time. I don't have too much of a problem losing playing in that fashion unless it happens consistently. Far more exciting than many England games i have seen.

Agree with Gerrard. He doesn't seem to do anything for me in this role. Doesn't win many tackles or intercept or get forward much.

Just Welbs to Lala for me. I felt we lacked someone who could link the mids to forwards (as it was). 1 pass by Sterling to Rooney and we had them in all kinds of trouble. That way Welbeck can bring on some pace later on.

Rooney needs to play as striker. Either drop Sturridge or play him on the wing.
Sterling runs around like a headless chicken. He has no end product. Drop him for Milner.
Gerrard was useless as usual. He doesn't have the capacity to control the tempo of a game like Pirlo does.
      Henderson out, Barkley in.
      Baines is just awful.

Sturridge has been dropping off to the right wing all season. The thing is when he did it for Liverpool this was Suarez's cue to move forward and central to lead the line. With a player of his quality Sturridge going wide made little difference, but playing for England, Rooney doesn't offer the same so you're left with a big hole up front with no presence whatsoever.

Hodgson has tried play like Liverpool with Sterling in the hole and Rooney(Suarez) out wide, with definitely didn't work, so he needs to either change the system(based around Rooney), or change the players(drop Rooney).

Obviously, we need to fine-tune the system if we really want to go far. And with Rooney in the system it isn't working, which is why I can see Roy trying out Barkley/Sterling in there instead.

Yeah, and Rooney just couldn't get close to filling Suarez's shoes. If he could then the system you played could work quite well as Rooney and Sturridge would both drift right and open up space for Baines to move into and do what he does best. But Rooney wasn't good enough to make Darmian even bother with him really, then he didn't track back allowing Darmian to run riot down the flank, which then made Baines look like the average defender he is.

For formation changes on Maccy D's do you just sub out the player first I.e. a striker out that had played and then change formation from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 and a spot will open up to bring a mid that hasn't played?

What's all this about players on the right going out automatically?

I created a test account this morning to try it out. I can confirm its the player on the right (on the screen) going out automatically. if he has played or not doesnt matter. If you change from say 3-4-3 to 5-3-2 both the midfielder and forward "to the right" are sent to the bench. And in this scenario then giving you two empty spaces in the defence line. The empty spaces occuring form formation change also appear on the right.

Basically this means that when setting up your team before each round make sure you place players from left to right according to what time and date they play on. This will give you most flexibility to change formation as the round draws towards its end.

Fair play, I am really enjoying the Telegraph WC game. We have a mini league in work (12 teams) and you can see the situation changing and developing after each game.

It is a really straightforward format with a team of 11 (usual formations allowed) no subs and you just get 40 transfers to use throughout the tournament, even during each day. You can change your formation within limits as you make transfers.

Some have used quite a few transfers already and are flying high, others are keeping their subs till the knockout rounds. I have used a couple of strategic transfers (Neymar > Sanchez > Cavani) and will use another today (Cavani > Messi). I have got quite a few transfers planned half way through the group stages to get extra games (Brazil players to Russia / Spain players).

    It's really good. 🙂

I have a question to ask. I have the following situation - my formation is 5-4-1, but now I want to change it to 4-4-2. As we know if I do it directly in my case this would mean to bench my rightmost defender. So the line of defenders ABCDE will lose its E member and will look like ABCD.

However, another of my defenders (defender A) has 2 points less than the rightmost one and I prefer, of course, to bench him so that the four guys that will be left are BCDE. Do you think that if I reverse the actions:

at first bench defender A (so that I am left with +BCDE)
and then change the formation to 4-4-2

I will be able to have BCDE left and thus keep the rightmost defender in my team?

I will post here what happened - but I still have to wait for the match of Switzerland later today to see whether I will have an even weaker defender to leave out because my defender D is still to play and may be he will be even worse than defender A.

Just tried it out - What happens is, you remove player A, then you change formation and you are left with:-

            x B C D (E still goes to bench) and a new space free for a forward

So basically you cannot avoid losing player D!

Actually I managed to try it with my forwards so I think the bad news is that it will still be the rightmost that is benched and not the empty space. It was easy to try it with my forwards as I have Messi there and he is still to play.

So I have changed the formation to 5-3-2 and thus, an empty space appeared right from Messi. Then I benched Messi and I was left with 2 empty spaces in attack. Then I have put Messi back but this time on the right side so that now the empty space is from his left. And then I changed the formation back to 5-4-1 hoping that it will be the empty space that dissappears and not Messi. However, the empty space remained and Messi was benched.

So if the same logic is applied then I guess I will unfortunately lose the defender in my case but maybe they programmed it in such a way that it will drop the space and not the defender because the defender already has points (while Messi still did not play) but I doubt they thought about it.

Yes, I see that Icon have just confirmed the same conclusion. It is really silly from the game developers to have it like that.

Still may be Icon benched such a player like I did (i.e. Messi - one that did not yet play). So may be if the rightmost is one who already has points then the program will not benched him but the empty space. Icon, did you do with with a guy who actually already has played?

do we think there is a chance of a Brazil in the fifa game? On the basis that they won't be able to comp with the out of sequence fixtures? I had intended to swap out cesar but wonder if it is worth sticking with him in case
