PlayON Picks Gameweek 8 – £2,500 Guaranteed Game

As always on a Friday lunchtime, we analyse the PlayON player price list ahead of tomorrow’s 10.45am deadline. Below we offer a couple of picks per position: one essential weekend target and a left-field alternative for your consideration.

This week PlayON has a £2,500 Guaranteed Pot on offer and there is a special promotion for this game: Enter one Team and Get a Second Entry For Free – click here to Enter Your Team 1 and Get Your Free Second Entry . There is also a £500 Winner Takes All Game this week.

Separately, PlayON have been doing a lot of work on their player pricing algorithm over the past few months and next week is the first time this is going to be put live on PlayON.co . The new algorithm prices will be going live next Monday so if you have any thoughts on whether it is a better or worse pricing model, let the PlayON Team know on their Facebook Page or @playon on Twitter.

Goalkeeper – Tim Howard 7.4m
It’s unusual to label a goalkeeper of Howard’s standing a left-field pick but with only a solitary clean sheet for Everton, the American certainly could have had a better start to the season. A home clash against a Villa side that has failed to score in their last three offers a chance for the Toffees defence to find some defensive form and Howard, at only 7.4m, looks a bargain when compared to his pricier team-mates. Southampton have been in excellent form under Ronald Koeman and their dependability at the back has seen them concede just once in front of their own supporters. We opt for Fraser Forster, then, with the Saints stopper setting you back just 7.8m in PlayON as Sunderland make their way to St Mary’s.

Defender – Hector Bellerin
With Mathieu Debuchy injured and Calum Chambers suspended, the young Frenchman looks set for a rare start at home to Hull this weekend. Bellerin is available for just 7.2m as the Gunners attempt to rediscover the resilience that served up 11 clean sheets in front of their own fans in the season gone by. If you’re willing to splash the cash, though, there’s no doubt that Leighton Baines (9.1m) looks a strong contender at both ends of the pitch at home to Villa. As mentioned above, Paul Lambert’s troops have drawn blanks in each of the last three, whilst Baines – despite missing a spot-kick against Man United last time around – has still served up a goal or assist in all but one of his previous five appearances.

Midfielder – Dusan Tadic
We were keen to opt for the Serbian’s team-mate Sadio Mane but with the Senegal international still travelling back from international duties, we’re going to play it safe. Tadic has chalked up three assists in the first seven Gameweeks and, despite failing to score, has so far fired 17 shots – only Raheem Sterling has managed more amongst midfielders. At 8.4m, the summer signing from FC Twente could finally be set to break his duck against the Black Cats tomorrow. It’s difficult to ignore the formidable Chelsea side that sits five points clear at the summit. Eden Hazard has had a relatively disappointing start to the season by his own high standards but has still managed a pair of goals and assists. A penalty against Arsenal in the previous Gameweek reminded us of the Belgian’s abilities and although he’s a little expensive at 10.4m this week in PlayON, an away trip to Crystal Palace could bring home the points once again.

Forward – Papiss Demba Cisse
The Newcastle frontman has so far scored four goals in three appearances this term, earning him the best goal per minutes ratio in the Premier League. With the Magpies hosting a Leicester City side who have conceded seven in their last three, Cisse will be hoping for a third brace of the season, though at 11.0m, he doesn’t come cheap. For only 9.7m, Danny Welbeck looks an excellent value option as Arsenal look to bounce back from the previous Gameweek’s loss to Chelsea. He may have notched just once in the league since joining from Man United but Welbeck is still very much in form – with seven goals in his last nine appearances for club and country across all competitions, he looks set to trouble a shaky Hull defence that have conceded in five of the last six.

thats mad Arvin, I really fancy Mane to do well and I was looking at ways of getting him in but I dont want to take another -4 this week to do it. Was also just off the comparison tool looking at the merits of Jordan Henderson over Sterling as I need to free cash. Although the stats say not to touch it with a bargepole there is only the 1 point per game difference and for £3 million it doesn't seem like good business to keep Sterling around. Maybe will make the changes next week. nice article though, cheers

Henderson has actually quite a few merits...his creativity stats really aren't far behind Sterling's and he's much more of a bap magnet than Raheem. See the comments below for that article...in one of them I speak about the difference in their baps!

Good luck with whatever you end up doing mate, thanks. 🙂

Killian, I'm not over impressed that you said I had to do it by a certain date last week to get the special offer and then you open it up again. A little more transparency please, I don't like to be duped....

Just to be clear-I felt I was gaining an adavnatage by doing it in the time allotted so I would have two teams vs one for others who didn't make the deadline-this advantage has gone and perhaps you should give me another free entry......

      2. PlayON

        Hi Tommy,

We certainly weren't looking to dupe you - we decided to extend the offer for the full gameweek as a number of people weren't engaged last weekend due to the international fixtures. We only made this decision post the previous deadline having passed

          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yes but as you can see-you have now wiped out the advantage that all those that met the deadline would have had-there will now be more teams top compete against and I think this is very mis-leading as you have now reduced my odds.

      One other point to note:

We have been working on our player pricing algorithm over the past few months and next week is the first time this is going to be put live on the site. We would very much welcome the thoughts of the FFS Community on whether the prices are better or worse than they have been in the past. Feel free to let us know on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/PlayON or on our Twitter page: https://twitter.com/PlayON

I think the price point for the main game is too high and in my view will reduce number of players-I think anything over £3 reduces the attractiveness for players. I think an entry of £3 in to a £1000 game(or lower) is better than £5.50 in to a £2k game.

Hi Killian I'm in a similar boat to Tommy J above in terms of meeting the original bonus deadline but now not getting the promised advantage. Why did you extend the offer beyond the deadlline?

      1. PlayON
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

        Hi Weston,

We put out a large guaranteed pot of £2,500 this week as we are looking to grow the user numbers on PlayON over the coming months.

We extended the offer of "Enter a team and get a second entry free" beyond last Saturday as a lot of people weren't focused on the Premier League last weekend and it is only at the point of 500 people entering the game do we break even.

        1. Kloppelganger
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

Killian, that's a pretty poor response mate. Your first point only answers why you'd run a promotion, not why it was extended.

Your second point is surely the reason you set the original Tuesday deadline in the first place. And the numbers just don't work on your final point, i.e. with no promotion you make £250 from 500 entries but with this (extended) promotion your break-even entry requirement is substantially higher (exact numbers depend on whether there is still a £0.50 charge added to the free entry).

I really like this game and so play it regularly but you guys have erred by extending this deadline and are compounding it by offering insufficient justification.

          1. Tommy J

I totally agree-our chances of winning are now greatly reduced and we were mistakenly enticed in to the game 'early' and now any advantage has totally gone.

        2. Tommy J
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 14 Years

You're missing the point Killian-we made sure we met the deadline as we would have an advantage over all those who joined afterwards(two teams vs one). Therefore our odds of winning have reduced-I may have made a different decision about joining because I'd now prefer everyone only had one team. This is mis-leading and I think is a notifiable complaint.

      Hi Killian

You really do need to get the performance of this new website sorted, it's very painful again this morning.

It will no doubt turn people off from playing.

iPad sometimes is at a standstill using it and loggin in...

I gotta agree with Evs. I have found it so much more painful than last year. It's the lack of live updates that takes the fun out too.

Last year, with every block, tackle etc counting, an almost instant total updates, it was so much more fun. The lack of ways for a defender to score now makes it dull.

Also, I have entered 3 teams into the £2,500 pot, and not got one of my entry fees back.

Cahill is the worst of the options in the Chelski backline, so I think you'd be better getting in Baines, then if you want a Chelski defender in future get Azpi/Ivan

He does as do all the other Chelse defenders. Problem is he has less chance of attacking returns than the likes of Ivan.

    Should I do

    King > Downing/Moses

For Chadli cover incase he doesn't play?

Can do it for free and still have 2FTs for next week. Only thing is it burns my 1.1 ITB which I wanted for possible Walcott/Sanchez/ADM e.t.c. type moves from next week.

If yes, which would you go for? I'm leaning towards Moses.

Why isn't Jagielka more popular on here with everton finally getting a good run of fixtures? I know Baines is the number one pick from their defenders, but surely jags is good value at 5.4

    1. Piggs Boson

People buy Baines because his attacking returns are that of a midfielder. They don't buy him for CSs. Seeing Jagielka as an alternative is nonsensical!

Because they've not been keeping clean sheets and he's not overly attacking. I agree though with the fixtures 5.4 is an absolute steal and he's really good for bps also.

      Baines is just everything:

      - nailed on
      - dead ball situations
      - assists/open play goals
      - chance of a cleanie
      - fullbacks seem to be picking up more BAPs

Ivan is less attacking though better defensively.

Yeah..just do it. Nothing better than you having Welbeck against his Ramsey...or Silva and Aguero...That sort of stuff. Takes watching SKY footy to another level. We used to agree to do three transfers quite often because he can get a bit bored having the same team for too long...that helps keep them interested for the long run. It all works best if you just forget about OR.

Boyd for now. 4.4 and gives you a reliant 2 pointer if he should ever come off the bench for you.

People claiming Baines is a midfielder with clean sheet potential. If he was a midfielder he would be ranked 16th in the overall rankings below Jedinak, Diame and Routledge who are all priced significantly lower than Baines. Baines has the advantage of clean sheet points too so looking at this it doesn't really look great

Compare there historic yearly points total with Baines and see if he really is that terrible.

      For last year alone

      Jedinak- 95
      Routledge - 95
      Baines - 169

That's with CSs though. 39 extra points due to that, plus a few baps, so you're looking at 120-125 points as a mid. Not great, but not terrible either.

Is Stirling to Santi worth a hit.

I'm in 2 minds myself to be honest. I may listen to what Wenger has to say this afternoon and make a choice.

Bottom line though is my team is totally template at the minute: -

        Ivan, Clyne...
        Siggy, ADM, Stirling, Fabs
        Costa, Pelle, Welbeck

Boring really...sometimes I think I have to man up and back myself...but I'm also 9th in my companys mini league (well I say mini league - there are 800 of us) and do not want to lose ground - so tough one really.

I like Arsenals fixtures, but I also know Stirling V QPR could bring tasty points
