The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 12

Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours.

Defence

Chelsea’s upturn in fixtures earns Thibaut Courtois a climb to the top of the keeper standings. At 6.0, the Belgian is a relatively cheap option when compared to most of Jose Mourinho’s defensive options and a kind set of fixtures (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL, sto) in the next six should arrest a run of four matches without a clean sheet. At 7.2, Branislav Ivanovic remains our Blues defender of choice – we expect the Serbian’s raids down the right to come to fruition over that schedule.

West Ham pair Adrian and Aaron Cresswell have some kind upcoming fixtures (eve, NEW, wba, SWA, sun) to prosper. At 5.4, the latter may be the dearest Hammers defensive option around but he’s justified that in recent outings, earning 22 points in the last four Gameweeks.

Having kept out the Hammers last time out, Villa duo Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar are on the up ahead of showdowns with Burnley, Palace, Leicester and West Brom in the next five. Vlaar is, however, nursing a knock picked up on international duty and any possible period of absence will dent our confidence here.

Southampton slip in our estimations as Ronald Koeman’s men brace themselves for matches against City, United, Arsenal and Everton in the next six, suggesting Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand will find it hard to replicate the resilience which has seen them concede just five times in 11 matches.

Elsewhere at the back, Leighton Baines stays at the defenders summit in spite of his current hamstring complaint. Given that Everton have refused to rule him out of this weekend’s clash with West Ham, there’s every chance of a speedy return to action for a player who has now earned attacking returns in seven of the last nine.

Burnley’s Kieran Trippier remains in consideration after finally earning attacking points last time around. The right-back served up a 12-point haul against Hull and, now down to 4.8, has Stoke, Villa, Newcastle and QPR in the next four. If you’re scraping around the budget bracket for a first-choice defender, the 3.9-priced Yun Suk-Young has started the last four for QPR and hosts Leicester, Burnley and West Brom in the next six, whilst Paul Dummett (4.1) has been key to the resilience which has seen Newcastle concede just once in the last four.

Midfield

Alexis Sanchez’ move up front for Arsenal ensures the in-form Chilean holds steady at the summit – the Gunners face three dodgy defence (MUN, wba, sto) in the next four.

Eden Hazard is our premium Chelsea midfielder – the decision is made easier by the fact that Cesc Fabregas is battling a hamstring injury and is also just one booking from suspension. The 10.0-priced Hazard has served up double figures in each of his last two at the Bridge ahead of the Blues’ above-mentioned run, whilst Oscar, at 8.4 and with 4% ownership, looks a decent cheaper differential, with three goals in the last six.

Stewart Downing remains our mid-price midfielder of choice, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson climbs as Swansea’s fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 13 and Nacer Chadli continues to thrive for out-of-sorts Tottenham. The Belgian’s sixth goal of the season against Stoke took him into second spot in the FPL midfield standings and with Hull, Everton, Palace and Burnley in the upcoming six, it’s perhaps a little surprising only 16% have snapped him up.

Ross Barkley has started three of the last four for Everton since returning from injury and has the fixtures to play his way into consideration. The Toffees entertain West Ham, Hull and QPR and also travel to Spurs in the next five and at 6.7, Barkley’s 4% ownership suggests he could be a decent mid-price differential if he can avoid Roberto Martinez’ rotation policy.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, Raheem Sterling faces Palace, Stoke, Leicester and Sunderland in the next four, though with reports suggesting Daniel Sturridge has suffered another injury setback in training, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can rediscover his early-season form.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic is the main faller. The playmaker’s underlying stats remain strong but, having blanked in seven of the opening 11 Gameweeks, his consistency is clearly an issue and with the schedule stiffening, he may struggle to stay in the reckoning.

Forwards

Up front, Sergio Aguero holds firm after firing seven goals in the last four for City, with the Argentine’s armband credentials affording him the edge over any frontline option right now.

Finally free from injury and rested for Spain’s recent internationals, Diego Costa looks poised to take advantage of Chelsea’s upcoming schedule. Having scored in seven of his nine league appearances, the summer signing is on a par with Aguero for consistency but sits just one yellow card away from a single-match ban after earning a fourth booking of the season at Anfield last time around.

Below them, Charlie Austin and Diafra Sakho look the pick of the budget strikers right now. The former’s four goals in the last three – including back-to-back strikes against Chelsea and City underline his capabilities, whilst Sakho has netted in all but one of his league starts for the Hammers and, like Austin, looks an absolute steal in the sub 6.0 category.

Olivier Giroud’s imminent return for Arsenal knocks Danny Welbeck down in our estimations, whilst Graziano Pelle – another forward who is one booking shy of a ban – also takes a tumble in light of Southampton’s post-Gameweek 12 schedule.

Further down, Tottenham’s Harry Kane offers an option in the sub-5.0 bracket – handed his first start in the previous Gameweek, his current form suggests the youngster could be a real bargain if he remains ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in the pecking order. We’d tentatively reserved a place for Daniel Sturridge ahead of Liverpool’s fine fixtures but, as mentioned above, the striker could be sidelined yet again after apparently suffering a thigh injury in training.

Just from scanning comments it's looking like Baines has a small chance for WHU, but will probably miss it but back for gw13, and Fab is more unclear just my view that he will start WBA and it was all part of a scheme so he could rest

Did anyone see the Sky Sporst "experts" discuss Wayne Rooney after todays game? I for one completely agree with Jamie Carragher. Rooney is an England great, ofcourse he is. But is he a world great, world class? I 100% think the answer to that is no. Disuss?

Like, i can understand why people would argue that he might be/is. He has a good scoring record for his country and club, its pretty damn good actually. But for me hes never been someone i looked at as world class. Back in the days, during the 2004 Euros and then that season where he injured himself vs Bayern Munchen he was very good. But hes so inconsistant in his performances, and the last few years even his best performances havent been world class level and his good patches have been few and far apart.

Im not trying to "dish out" at his abilities or his fans, going for discussion.

I would suggest the last players that could be called great were Moore, Hurst, Charlton et al, granny shagger has won nothing for england and has scored lots of goals in qualification games and no where near enough in actual tournaments. 😛

I feel this argument is a bit invalid. The game has changed so much in just the last 20-30 years that comparing it to events before even the BPL was founded just doesnt make sense to me, at all. Yeah hes won nothing at international level, but thats nowhere near just his fault. SO many other things to factor in. There are far better players than Rooney that have been unable to lead their teams solely to international glory.

But the point is that 'Great' players do lead their countries to trophy success. He's a good player who has done well for his country but is a Henry or a Muller, i think not. 😛

So by the same token Messi and Ronaldo arent great players, then? Since theyve won nothing at international level as well, i mean.

Good point well made 😉 but yeah i'd sorta carry on that tack with both of them as Argentinian fans would not rate Messi as high as Maradonna and lets be honest Ronaldo has hardly dragged Portugal onto success has he. I stand by my opinion on Rooney though, he has flattered to decieve for England considering his early promise.

I agree with that, Rooney has, despite delivering good in terms of stats and numbers. But his promise was so much higher, and hasnt managed to become top class.

Furthermore, the difference in club football and international is big. At club level they train with eachother every day and the best players more or less have the teams build around them. Its like that to a certain extent on the international team as well, but its not even remotely comparable.

Argentinians dont rate Messi over Maradona simply because Maradona won them the WC. By cheating: Messi is by far the better and bigger player. But like i said before, comparing football now and from the 80s is literally impossible.

Maradonna won the WC in 86 by being the most complete player the world had ever seen my friend and scored one of the best WC goals of all time in the same game as the hand of god goal so to say he won the WC by cheating is simply wrong i'm afraid.

I dont think so personally, even without the Hand of God goal in extra time Maradonna would of been the difference imo......England did play well though. 🙂

But we`ll never know, will we. So even though Maradona was the best player in the world and likely could have led Argentina to be world champions, the fact remains that it was his cheating hand of god that ultimately allowed them to win. No matter how you wanna spin it, that truth can never be undone.

To me this would depend on your level of "scaling" players, if you would. Like if you grade them in 4-5 different stages, then youd ofcourse have like your Messi and Ronaldo on top, along with some from the early 2000`s/ late 90`s, then you have your Zlatans, Suarez, Iniesta etc in the group below that, and even below that you have your great/very good players. For me Rooney would be nowhere near the level of those in the group behind, i wouldnt mention him in the same breath as Iniesta, Zlatan etc. No way.

Possibly at his prime you could argue for the second group but overall yeah if group 1 is the elite greatest of all time, and group B is great players from history then Rooney is likely third tier alright. but thats a massive standard too. Frankly Zlatan is another one who argualby shouldnt be in it. Mercurial talent sure, but what has he really done in the big games?

Hes lead every single one of his teams to championships. Zlatan for sure is tier 2. Very close to the top of that bunch for me, too. And when i make up these tiers in my head, im just using players i have seen play, so nobody from before the 90s. Maybe something to keep in mind.

He hardly led Barca. He was like a fringe player there. And he's done well in the other leagues alright but again, hard to call that such a great achievement given their standards. Champions League and World Cup is what you're judging Rooney on. Zlatan should be judged on the same.

Well, he did hardly lead Barca. But he had something like 19 goals and 13-14 assists in La Liga, shifted out wide for Messi`s comfort. Id say thats not too shabby. World cup can never be comparable when hes swedish and Rooney is english. Thats just not fair. And i havent said that i judge players by that, at all. Wasnt me, that.

Sweden have often been a better team than England so it is fair. Zlatan scored 4 himself against England in a friendly lol

Fair point about being shifted to accomodate Messi and sorry yeah it was another guy who said that criteria. apologies

No worries m8. Well Sweden may have had better teams because they are used to working as a team, but seeing as the BPL is in England, the England team should always be favourites over Sweden. Where Sweden has one star, England has 4-5-6, almost every generation.

This is my opinion, Rooney must be a great player to have in a squad but if I had to name just an 11 he probably won't make it as there are better strikers and better in the hole players.

England great but not a legend , never fulfilled potential and only ever performed at one major tournament that was very early in his career and that adds to the disapointment factor , nowhere near a world great , tier 3 footballer I would say with Messi and Ronaldo tier 1 by their selves , tier 2 , Suarez Neymar Ibrahimovic Bale Xavi Iniesta

Agree 100%. There are many players in the tier 2 category (assuming everyone agrees that Messi/Ronaldo are alone at tier 1), and i cant find a place for Rooney in that same space.

Not a world great. Just google players who have scored more than 50 international goals to see the world is full of players who have bullied crap opposition to score a lot of international goals. Great players perform on the greatest stage when given the opportunity and beyond his first euros which showed so much promise, Rooney had failed to deliver when it's counted.

I brought my 7 year old son to his first ever game tonight. Ireland 4 USA 1.

He was so excited for days. The jersey, the scarf, face painted.. The look on his face as we climbed the last few steps and he saw the floodlit pitch for the first time in "real life". His reactions to the crowd noises and the goals going in... the half time burgers... picking out his favourite players...

These are the days you get to remember for the rest of your life, for both him and me. I'm happy .. over and out 🙂

My father brought my friend and I to Croke Park to watch Tipperary and Galway in the Hurling All-Ireland final 1988.

We sat in the Nally stand, tucked away in the corner but the atmosphere was incredible.

I was 11 at the time and I'll never forget the buzz.

Tipperary lost. I wanted to take my flag down and put away my colours but my father wouldn't let me do it.

He told me to always be proud of where I came from and to never hide it.

Lets say it does go through and he goes to Liverpool
what price would people be happy paying for him? Would personally not pay anything over 9.5

He`d probably be around 9.0, which i`d happily pay. Then again, i paid 10 for Balotelli, so what do i know.

Boyd in for a week if AdM is hurt seems fine. You have two players on 4 yellow cards and I think you can get by at defense if Baines misses out. Reassess next week with two frees.

So having a dilemma trying to pick between Guzan and Adrian.

Guzan gives me 0.4 extra cash and has tastier fixtures, Adrian more expensive but in a better team..

Who would you go for until the January WC?

Really close between the two. If you have Hutton I'd go with Adrian, if not, I'd go with Guzan. Not enough in it I think I'd rather take the savings. I think Villa have better fixtures than West Ham until Jan WC.

Yeah I don't have Hutton. Basically have Forster and a non playing keeper.

                  Im liking the Villa fixtures.

Defence over the next couple of week will be:
                  Guzan
                  Baines N.Taylor Wisdom Duff Dummett.

Planning on upgrading Duff to CHE or MCI defence in a couple of weeks

id go with Adrian...have a feeling West Ham will start keeping clean sheets, they have been fairly solid against tough opposition so luck should turn for them eventually on that front

Following RCA great post, what was the first live football game everyone attended?

My dad was into rugby being welsh and that so I never went to football with him. If you can believe it my first live match was an FA cup final Chelsea v Middlesbrough. My junior running club had a bar they ran there so I worked it despite only being 15/16. Doubt that can happen now. Had to work before kick off and half time but got to see 40 mins of each half. Only downer being I missed di matteo opening goal. Still great to have been there, been to many live games since.

I remember watching that on TV, still the fastest cup final goal ever I beleive 🙂 my first game was West Ham 1 Liverpool 2 at Upton Park in 1994 I was 8 years old , Martin Allen lobbed David James inside the first minute at my end ( all standing back then I nearly got crushed ) the noise and the buzz I fell in love with , unfortunately a ageing Ian Rush equalised and a young Robbie Fowler scored the winner , one of the best memories of my life will never ever forget that day my older brother took me

Chamberlain and Montero are the only ones who look good imo...maybe Diame

you have 8 good attackers, so how about downgrade Tadic to Wanyama/Boyd and avoid the benching dilemma? 🙂

That is what im doing, looking to downgrade so i dont have the benching dilemma, but its always nice to have some form of point potential on the bench for a rainy day. Might just do the safe and boring thing and get Boyd and use the rest to upgrade Pellè.

That was always the plan, sucks a little that hes out of the Villa game. Might just play Siggy and save the transfer so that i have a little more room to work with. I was looking for Sturridge, now that doesnt work... Actually getting Costa in again would be kind of a differential since most people dont still have him AND Aguero...

Im pretty sure im just gonna keep him and Siggy as first sub. Siggy can produce against anyone, and City hardly are keeping it tight these days. Having 2 ft is so powerful, i can pretty much rotate my entire team for the price of just one hit..

I think i could pretty easily squeeze in Costa as well. Having no attacking cover of the league leaders also seems a bit scary, might look into that.

Giroud matters not. I`d expect Sanchez either to keep centrally off of Welbeck or Giroud, or out to the left. Theo can only play wide right, even though he imagines that he can actually play as a striker.

I think he will stay central. Ozil is the only one who might push him wide I feel though Wegner loved putting him on the wing.

Hard to say at this point..there are several different options that could come to fruition. Bottom line though is Alexis will still be worth having regardless of position in my opinion.

Really? He played off of Di Natale in his last and best season in Italy, scoring 20 odd goals before leaving for Spain. I always thought that was his preferred position. I dont really think it matters too much where he plays anyway, as long as he does.

Sanchez has put in great performance both in the hole & on the left. On the national side when Pinilla is subbed in, he's slotted on the left & had a great record from there.

Sanchez on the right for Barca, I would say limited his goal scoring capabilities. Now he can at least cut in on his preferred foot. Keep in mind gents 19 goals, 10 assists last season limited to his near post 😉

A lot of that has to do with playing atleast second or third fiddle to Messi, whilst at Arsenal hes the whole damn orchestra. When Messi had his injury last season i believe Sanchez played a lot down the middle and on the left, shifting with Pedro and Neymar.

Guaranteed? That's a bit of an assumption imo!! Surely it depends on the situation in the game?

I can't see many scenarios playing out where United are cruising at Arsenal this weekend and that would be the only situation in which i could see him coming off after 60 minutes

sorry word almost seemed to slip out as I was typing'almost guaranteed' and yes speculation on my part, but even before this injury news I thought him a major candidate for being subbed off earlier than expected in games. Maybe not as early as 60mins, but 70/75, which I brought down to 60 cos of the injury.

Obviously a lot of scenarios could happen.

Yeah whenever theyre worried about swelling it's usually a good sign in injury terms anyways.

I dont have him so I guess Im in that awkward position where I dont want him to do well but I also dont want people to jump on my players lol

Forster for me. Will be sad to see him go. A rock in my defence.

Hey guys, quick (random) question as I'm new to the game. What's the deal with the Cup that starts in GW18? When we get drawn with someone, can we see who we are drawn against at the beginning of the week.. or is only after the deadline that we can see their squad??

Now that I've sat on my hands through all these price rises due to injury fears, Pelle/Tadic->Austin/Sanchez now for a hit, or wait until next week to do for free?

Sorry, by "now" I meant this GW assuming everyone is fit. Guess that is a lot of ifs.

It looks like good trade on paper tbh. Sanchez on fire in particular.

Does ADM flagged means his price won't change?

I believe it means that quite a lot more have to drop for his price to move. Can still move, but stickier.
