Scout Report – Carles Gil

Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

Would you do Costa to Aguero on a free? (this week)

    then

Downing and Sig to Boyd and Fabs (+ a small defensive shuffle) as a wc? (next week)

Final piece to the WC puzzle. Would appreciate your views.

    A) Austin + Fabregas + Bertrand

    B) Costa + Chadli + PvA

The big question! I've been debating basically the same question all week, at the moment I'm going without Costa.

Yep! It's a tough one. With Costa's recent form and high ownership, I'm slightly apprehensive about selling him.

Its simple! Costa over Austin(for consistency), Fab over Chadli(for consistency), Bert over Van Aan(for consistency). A wins by 2 votes 🙂

i think silva chadli etc are more explosive than fab and i fancy them to match fab in the short term

as for costa his inability to get bonus points or score more than 1 goal or contribute assists for half a season already means his cap is 5-7 points per game. people are buying him for his potential which he has not really fulfilled so far. also most of the time i will not cap him over hazard and now there is aguero as (C).

would rather have a punt on other players rather than the template costa & fab

I dare to challenge you on Austin having great alternatives at the price point - given that everyone will already have Kane. Ings, Carrroll, Bojan, Perez and the like will not get the consistent score every week as Costa will.

its time to play our favourite game - "playone, bench one, cap one"!

    ready? go!

    Play one:
    A - Cissoko (LIV)
    B - bertrand (new)

    Bench one:
    A - Hazard (swa)
    B - Costa (swa)
    C - Austin (MUN)
    D - Sanchez (mci)
    E - Silva (ARS)

    Cap one:
    A - Baines (WBA)
    B - Eriksen (SUN)
    C - Kane (SUN)
    D - Dowining (HUL)

    Foster/Krul
    Bertrand/Terry/Trippier/PVA/Wisdom

My WC is basically identical. Great team. I've opted for Foster/Myhill, but it's much of a muchness. Some of Foster's hauls were in matches where you would have benched him. I started the season with that rotation and got burned a few times.

Jack Cork and Harrison Reed/Lloyd Isgrove doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

A: Vlaar ---> Terry (swa away, good CS potential)
B: Vlaar ---> Stoke (lei) or Burnley (CPA) defender

Dunno...but there seems to be a bit of interest in his signature...maybe it's that.

Thinking of ditching Costa -> Rooney if RVP is injured what say you?!?

Costa's good but he's been a little disappointing too. Have had him all season so would lose value. The fact that he's only gotten 11 BPs for his 15 goals is quite annoying you never ever see a players bonus total below his goal tally.

Why are people getting ShawX with Pieters @ 4.6 and Cameron @4.2

Shawcross is a greater goal threat. Cameron susceptible to rotation. Pieters and Wollscheid are two good options. Particularly the latter if he can keep his place from Muniesa.

74 points, so not a bad week at all. Moving on, what do you think I should be doing with this lot prior to next gameweek?

    Fabianski, Pantilimon
    Zabaleta, Bertrand, Terry, Wisdom, Hutton
    Sterling, Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, Marney
    Costa, Kane, Austin

Its far from madness & that was my original plan. But i had RVP as a place holder for Kun. So i decided id get it done before his price raised too much

I think many were planning on doing this, but unfortunately for that plan the frenzy might push his price up considerably by then, especially if he shows promise this Sunday.

Looks like price only likely to go up by £0.1 more this week, so I'd say it's safe to hold at least one GW (whish I'd done that!)

Is this WC a little weak at the back without a guaranteed Chelsea starter - just thought it could be wortha two week punt - if he doesn't get gametime, I can easily swayp him out by swapping him, Costa and Boyd fr Terry Kane and (Erikson/Sterling/Tadic/Downing/Chadli)

    Pants/Krul
Berty ZOUMA Wisdom Baird VAn A
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Siggy Boyd
    Aguero Costa Austin

Just think that despite his price, Costa is 95% certain to continue with 6ppg for the whole season, whereas a Kane/Austin or similar despite being cheaper, could well drop off.

Fair enough! Was just thinking as they played well, plus didn't he score in a cup game the week before? Ah well, punts are exactly that - and at 4.6 he might be an affordable one for me (guess he'll be a ZERO mins or a starter) especially if Baird nails down a place

    Panti
    Clyne - Clichy - Cameron
    Sanchez - Hazard - ADM - Sterling
    Aguero - Giroud - Kane

Few punts with Clichy, Sterling and Giroud but have reasons behind them.

Could easily do Clichy/Sterling --> Terry/Tadic if people think that's a better idea but kinda like being a bit different..
