Tackling The Tricky Player Price Points

In this article I am going to look at some of the most tough-to-pick price points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game in  2015/16 – some of the position and price combinations that are causing the most headaches. I have picked out three key price points and will use a variety of sources to shortlist who I feel are the main protagonists.

4.5 DEFENDERS

There can’t be many people who don’t have at least one spot for a budget defender – and with viable 4.0 options few and far between this year, the spotlight falls on the myriad of 4.5 defenders vying for our attention. A lot of this will hinge on rotation, but I will look at the key players in isolation here.

Micah Richards: The former Manchester City full back should be nailed on following his move to Aston Villa and has a favourable set of early fixtures. If he can recapture his attacking returns of old – a goal and six assists in his last regular season (2011/12) – he could be a bargain, but will injuries be his downfall?

Robert Huth: Close to Richards in the projections, man-mountain Huth excelled following his move from Stoke to Leicester, securing six clean sheets in 14 appearances as well as a goal.  Another player with a history of attacking returns (six goals his Premier League season-best), Huth also has a kind set of opening fixtures.

Sebastian Coates: The 24-year-old centre back played very well at the tail end of last season under Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat, scooping four clean sheets in nine appearances. Tipping the tape at 6’5’’, Coates should also be a goal threat at set pieces, having grabbed 10 goals in 135 career appearances to date. The only risk is competition from club captain John O’Shea and new signing Younes Kaboul, however a starting place currently looks like his to lose.

My top recommendation: Robert Huth

7.0 MIDFIELDERS

This price point looks to be a rich source of potential FPL value this season and one that has been much discussed.  Here are my top picks:

Jordan Henderson: The Liverpool central midfielder is absolutely nailed on as club captain and will be looking to continue his emergence from the shadow of club legend Steven Gerrard. Henderson proved a valuable asset last season, bagging seven goals and 10 assists whilst averaging a solid 4.38 points per appearance. The only two doubts are whether he keeps penalty duties in light of the acquisition of Christian Benteke and whether another new boy, James Milner, takes some of his attacking duties.  Liverpool’s opening fixtures are a real mixed bag with tough away games combined with some appealing home ties.

James Milner: Milner was one of Manchester City’s best performers last season.  Although still in and out of the starting line-up he still managed to notch up five goals and eight assists. There should be no such concerns over playing time at Liverpool, with Milner seemingly glued into the midfield alongside Henderson. Looking at matches where Milner played at least 60 minutes, he averaged 4.47 points per appearance, marginally ahead of Henderson.  Milner has also caught the eye in pre-season, regularly getting forward and helping himself to a couple of goals.

Nacer Chadli: The Spurs midfielder seemed to pick up goals even when he wasn’t playing particularly well last season, ending up with an impressive 11 goals and six assists in 35 appearances. He seems to be nailed on when available, scoring at a rate of 4.57 per appearance. He regularly got subbed during the last 30 minutes, making his points per 90 minutes an even more impressive 6.0. Perhaps his playing time will be increased this term as he adapts to the rigours of English football.

Dusan Tadic: After a steady start last year, Southampton’s Tadic jumped into the FPL hall of fame with a 23-point haul in Gameweek 8. That seemed to be something of an anomaly as he only managed double figures in one more week. In fact, he was to prove a frustrating player to own, ‘blanking’ in 22 out of his 31 appearances. Finishing with four goals and nine assists, he averaged 3.77 points per appearance. An impressive pre-season combined with the Saints’ favourable early fixtures means that Tadic sneaks onto my shortlist for those who can’t stretch to other higher priced Southampton targets Sadio Mane or Graziano Pelle.

My top recommendations: James Milner and Nacer Chadli

8.0 – 9.0 MIDFIELDERS

In this minefield of a category, I will also include 8.5 players as people tend to bracket them together (and maybe even a sneaky 8.0!).  My shortlist:

Theo Walcott (9.0): The Arsenal player is an interesting one as he hardly featured last season due to injury but, as we all know, when he plays, he’s FPL gold.  Last season was hard to judge as he largely played cameos, racking up just 447 minutes across 14 appearances, grabbing five goals and an assist. Overall he scored at a modest 3.64 points per appearance, although if we look at just the four games where he played 60+ minutes, that shoots up to 9.5.  Looking at it another way, his ‘points per 90 minutes’ averaged at 10.3 (for reference, Aguero’s was 7.7).  The issue with Theo is always whether he will get the starts.

Aaron Ramsey (8.5): With the quality on show combined with the Gunners’ attractive opening schedule, I could easily have filled this price point with Arsenal midfielders; however, I will pick out just one more Gunner. Ramsey must now be seen as an established FPL asset.  In a somewhat fragmented season, the Wales international notched six goals and assists in 29 appearances, scoring at an average of 4.0 FPL points per appearance. Both Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil outscored him here (4.54 and 4.68 respectively) but I have picked Ramsey out as he finished the season strongest, averaging 5.7 per appearance in the last 10 Gameweeks (Cazorla 4.0, Ozil 3.33).

Memphis Depay (8.5): I am normally wary of considering players that are new to the Premier League, however Depay looks like he could be a bit special, with Van Gaal describing the player he managed as Dutch coach as “the most talented young player at the World Cup”.  A direct free-kick specialist, he racked up 22 goals and five assists in 30 appearances in Eredivisie last season.  In pre-season he has been deployed in an attacking central role, just behind (and sometimes even ahead of) Wayne Rooney and appears full of confidence. He has featured consistently in pre-season, including a start against Barcelona in a team that Van Gaal described as close to his team to play Spurs.  He looks very promising ahead of a decent fixture list although whether he can transfer his prior form to the Premier League remains to be seen.

Sadio Mane (8.0): A small step down in price but another very interesting selection in this bracket. The Southampton raider accumulated an impressive 11 goals and four assists in his debut Premier League season in 30 appearances, at a rate of 4.57 per appearance. A somewhat explosive player, he took a while to really get going and if we look at his form post-Christmas, his points per appearance increases to an impressive 5.42. Perhaps he had a new pair of boots in his Christmas stocking? Again, Mane should benefit from the Saints’ ‘sea of blue’ easy fixture list.

My top recommendations: Aaron Ramsey and Sadio Mane (plus a short-term punt on Walcott)

thanks for submitting. Mane certainly has the potential to be underpriced if he can maintain his second half of last season form.

I am just curious. What are your thoughts about Fabregas compared to the other 8 - 9 players? I am struggling to justify his inclusion, but his stats and history always make him a great pick. What do you think?

I'm asking exactly this question. I have him in because of his history in the first half of the season, but the value for money in midfield this year is arguably even better than last season. My gut feeling is to get a solid start and adjust as the season progresses depending on form

I have bought Fab to cover Chelsea's offense for the time being. His PPG v £ is slightly better than Costa and Haz and he tends to perform best in the 1st half of the season.

I know. And I agree. He stayed in my team from the beginning. But he is not a natural goalscorer, and there might be cheaper options available that do alright. Fab is also not a captain option, and you need those in your team. Saving a million could go a long way, and a heavy strikeforce is desirable since it is more difficult to predict who the succesful cheaper forwards will be.

I don't see many teams going with both Fabregas and Hazard, why is that?

            Haha, yeah i guess so.

Would you be so nice to post your team? You seem to put some thought into it, and i'm curious what you came up with.

My team at the moment is:

            Panti - Hennesey
            Mert - Clyne - Cedric - Coates - Huth
            Cesc - Wally - Ozil - Mane - Milner
            Kane - Pelle - Wilson

            1 million in the bank.

I'm mostly debating whether to switch Ozil to Ramsey and if I should find a place for Rooney/Benteke/Sakho by downgrading Milner / using my 1 million. I could use an extra captain option, even though I don't mind not following the template (Chelsea defender for example!).

            What do you think?

Erm, that looks okay, but, having a 7 as cheapest middy could hamstring you down the line. Given Man U's decent fixtures I'd certainly have one in there.

My lot? I'm trying to have a team that feels okay rather than one that I might be trying to be just a bit too clever, it's boring though! lol

              Cech/Elliot

              Cedric - Huth - Azpi - Coates - Moore

              Sterling - Hendo - Fabgas - Mane - Surnam

              Giroud - Kane - Roo

Well, thanks for responding! I have 1.5 in the bank actually, that makes a little difference.

You are both right about Milner and the United fixtures, perhaps I should bring someone in. Rooney is the standout candidate, but you pay for that as well. I just think Kane is going to continue where he left off or pick up again. He is still the focal point, United always start slowly and he takes penalties when Townsend is off the pitch. Perhaps I can squeeze them both in. Do you know if Rooney is one penalties?

I also like your Giroud pick, but I don't understand why you have Cech instead of any other defender.

Good team, if a little light in defence! Clearly 3-4-3 with a strong strikeforce and quite flexible. Since the cheaper strikers are not as consistent as the expensive ones, you should be alright and be able off to a good start.

Haha, I won't but understand your line of thinking.

I changed some things, think there is a case to be made that this team is stronger than the one I had.

                    It looks like this:

                    Panti - Hennesey
                    Mert - Clyne - Cedric - Coates - Huth
                    Cesc - Ozil - Mane - Lens - King
                    Rooney - Kane - Giroud

So basically Pelle, Wilson, Wallcott, Milner to Rooney, Giroud, Lens and King.

Giroud could also be Pelle or Benteke for that matter. I think it has more captain potential, but I do miss Wallcott and it is a bit less flexible.

Which one do you guys prefer?

Some of the projections were way off last year, especially in the budget category. Mirallas springs to mind of one who was touted for greatness but didn't deliver, plus how does Bentekes projection stay the same after a move from villa to Liverpool?. Id take the fingers with a pinch of salt.

Go more on gut feeling. Depay is the new Di Maria. Huth is a walking red card and is part of a new formation with 3 at the back. Richards was always dodgy defensively and is part of a very weak back line. Beware of Ramsey playing on a deeper central role which will diminish his attacking threat, plus there's a huge rotation risk of which the same goes for the hit and miss Walcott. Nobody in thrift right kind would spend 9m on a player who isn't nailed.

Thanks for your reaction! Since we have a lot of the same players I quitte like your team. I find it funny that we both have a totally different frontline, and I have no idea which one is better. Your frontline is better I suppose, but also 2.5 m more expensive. We also both have an Ars defender, Cedric, Coates, Huth, Ozil, Milner.

What I would change though (aside from Hazard, so I will ignore him) is
      1. Kos to Mert. You can use all the money you can get, and I believe their attacking returns will be similar.
      2. Courtois -> Someone cheaper. Apparantly it is better to stick with someone cheaper since they will generate more points. If he provides value, why not double up? And if he does not, why stick with him? So I would get rid of him, he is also fairly expensive. The 5.0 picks for me are Panti, Adrian and Fabbi.
      3. Wanyama -> King or someone else with less ownership. Wanyama is not gonna set the world on fire with his performances, and his price will drop because everybody owns him. You might want three Soton players at some point, and he is not the one you will want to have by then.
      4. Sterling -> Someone more likeable. I even prefer Yaya! I think he will do alright, but I am biased to get him in. No way Jose!

GK: Cech over Courtois for me! But i still stress having a playing 4.5m (Schmeichel/Butland?)

      DEF: can't fault it...

MID: Wanyama not really gonna get you points, but frees up funds... Cazorla > Ozil. Imo downgrade Haz to Fab, for first few GWs, and spend the extra 3.5m on upgrading sako to Kane? (I feel Haz will take a while to hit form this season, but when he inevitably does, get him in!)

FWD: Benteke still 50/50 for me, Rooney a good shout, Sako is a punt. Any plans to get Aguerooooo in? With sterling, they'll smash the points system...

Finally someone who says Fab over Haz early on! I'm not buying the Hazard bandwagon, I remember vividly having Hazard last year early on and getting burnt. Seems like everyone forgot how slow of a start Hazard had and a super consistent and productive form Fabregas had early on. In my books it's a no brainer. What can happen is that with 50 plus percent of ownership Hazard can drop from 11.5 to 10.8 in few weeks if doesn't deliver at premium, and you can get Fab rising from 9.0 to 9.5 in first few weeks as people might do this direct transfer and you end up making over a mil on such transaction.

I am also intrigued by Sterling, in the preseason he did so much work, looks very active and energetic after the move with a chip on his shoulder. If City don't bring De Bruyne in he might be a top 5 mid at only 9mil.

WOW!!! thanks so much, the most insightful and useful replies/response I've ever had. All very sound and valid points indeed. food for the thought.

By swapping Haz for Fab does free up so much cash, and can now get Kane
trade-off -- one less capt choice. Really only have Rooney then :-/ maybe sterling

      thanks again

Thanks, that's nice to hear! By downgrading Hazard to Fabregas you can almost upgrade Sakho to Kane. Downgrade Koscielny or Courtois and you are already there. Whether to do that, I don't know. I think that's a difficult decision since Sakho provides great value and has Payet behind him to create chances. Carroll and Valenica are injured I believe, so he is a good option with those home games coming up. It's just whether you play him every week or rotate with a strong midfielder. Or kick out Benteke, but he is also a good option.

One more thing. I read that Francis is not as likely to play as previously thought. You might want to consider swapping him for Mings (the leftback from the same team).

        Good luck!

Interesting read. I think the 6.5m forwards are even more appealing than the 7.0m midfielders but this is a helpful approach.

Another thought to managing these price points is maybe going in a bit on the high end of a price point so you can make a transfer more easily without knee jerking, since some bandwagons will roll after gw1 but we might not be ready to jump on them. Having your risky players like Walcott be a bit more expensive might give you flexibility to catch Memphis at 8.6 or 8.7m, for example. A like for like switch from Ramsey to Memohis demands immediate action.

I have all three of those defenders so I hope they all tie for 1st!

    Thanks for the article.

No problem. I think that's a good point about the "high end" - another reason why Walcott may be a good short term punt - lots of players at 9.0 and 8.5 (or even lower) that you can switch to as soon as you get bored!

Nice article! Especially with the 4.5 defenders, I'd been struggling for ages.

Can someone help me with this?

    RMT
    Cech
    Azpilcueta - Cedric - Clyne
    Hazard - Depay - Henderson - Chadli
    Rooney - Costa - Deeney

    Bench: Hennessey, Wanyama, Huth, Senderos.

GK: Cech a good shout, will keep many CS this season i feel! Hennessy i presume won't play for you, just to free up funds?

      DEF: Looks solid!

MID: Very strong! Imo, Depay won't hit full form straight away so id favour Mata to begin with. But no Arsenal/City Mids? Defo think you're gonna miss out there! I suggest finding a way of getting Cazorla/Sterling in if possible

FWD: Rooney a good shout, Costa not so; looks injured and injury prone, downgrade to Kane/Pelle/Lukaku/Tekkers and use the money to upgrade/free up funds for elsewhere..

      But id give a good 7.5/8 /10

        Ok so ignoring the backline;

I've decided to punt on Depay - I think his pace and attacking intent will do him in good stead over Mata, but we'll see.

        How is this;

        Hazard/Hendo/Cazorla/Depay

        Rooney/Pelle/Deeney

Decided to go for Pelle over Bentekkers as it gives me 2.0 in the bank for Aguero.

Who is the better promotion punt do you think; Deeney or Wilson?

Well Baker is supposedly getting loaned out, and can't really think of any other 4.0's in the meantime.

        I've actually taken some advice from above, what do you think about;

    Azpi Darmian Clyne (Mings, Targett)

    Fab Walcott Haz Ritchie (Fletcher)

Want to bring in Aguero asap, unsure about def, comfortable enough with GK and MIds.

      7.5/10

GK: Rudd just to free up funds? Schmeichel/Butland would be a v good rotation with Ruddy...

DEF: Utd i can't see keeping many CS, Azpi+Clyne good picks, Id say Francis > Mings though

MID: Best part and similar to mine! Walcott v punt, downgrade to cazorla who is nailed on and a better bet, id also downgrade Haz to Sterling for first few GWs, I feel Haz will have a slow start to form, and use the +2.5m to get Kane in, or to use towards getting Agueroooo (If you can get Sterling/Silva + Aguero you will be laughing at the points you will get). Ritchie is a v good pick, will rocket up in price i feel

FWD: Good choices! Imo id rather have Wilson > Deeney, Ritchie will deffo create more chances for Wilson than Watford will for Deeney...

Thanks appreciate the feedback. Still toying around with it, of course.

Tbh I'm not wild about rotations, ran with it for a bit last season and remain unconvinced. If anything I would be more inclined to go Cech and Myhill if I was to change but quite like Ruddy and Norwich fixtures for the foreseeable future.

Walcott is a punt, but a short term one at best. May switch to Rambo or Caz though, and probably Sterling in the long term.

Really want Aguero and Rooney ultimately, but want a steady team to start with and take it from there.

I had broadly the same shortlists as this but settled on Hendo, Coates and Ozil. Guess it comes down to personal preference between a few players.

Just wondering why you didn't do a budget forward category. That it provoking a lot of discussion with the great Wilson vs Deeney debate as well as Sakho and Bamford in the 5.5m-6.5m category.

Also I am doing my best to talk myself into keeping Fabregas but am struggling. I have Costa and am thinking about going for Ramsey as well as Walcott instead of Fab. Never owned Ramsey before but he seems to playing high up the pitch.

    Nice article Numb

I think a lot of people are overlooking Puncheon too as a mid-priced midfielder. I believe he has been massively under-priced at 6.0 considering his returns over the last season.

Pardew has brought the best out of him since going to Palace, and with Cabaye there we may see more goals from them. He'll still share set pieces with Cabaye so I don't see that being much of an issue.

    Certainly worth considering!

Depay is on my watchlist for now, I just can't bring myself to take the risk on fresh face to the PL until I see how United gel with their new signings

Yeah, Puncheon could be good - I would just like to see how Palace shape up - Bolasie is another I would consider as well as Cabaye, depending on what role he plays. Thanks

Great read thanks a ton! Although I remain still sceptical about Depay, Barca's defence was very generous towards American audience, I would not take the preseason overly seriously as it cannot simulate stingy and physical BPL defences.

I think Wallcott is a possible week1 sensation and a short bandwagon at best, before Sanchez returns. I have him C for week 1 for now.

RMT please: would appreciate any comments -

    GK: Schmeichel/Buttland
Def: Koscielny, Cedric, Ivanovic, Huth, 4.0
Mid: Wallcott (c - week1), Fabregas, Ozil, Ritchie, Wanyama (but thinking of getting another 4.5 due to risk of price drop)
    Fwd: Benteke, Rooney, Pele
    0.5m in the bank

The game plan is to take Ivanovic out after week one for an emerging bandwagon cheap defender as Chelski schedule after is rough and I think he can do great week 1.
Week 2, I would probs get Sterling in over Wallcott if he doesn't work out or save transfer.
Week 3, would take Aguero for week 4 for Rooney as I would have extra $ from Ivanovic transfer.

Cheers. In terms of Depay and pre-season, it was more to see whether he looks likely to start (he will imo) and what position he is taking up (a good one!) rather than the performances

Nice team - not a fan of Pelle but he seems to defy his ability with goals. Also, I prefer others over Ozil but could go either way to be honest. Nice to have a rough plan but be ready to tear it up!

        • 9 Years

I have Pele in the team just for first few weeks as Soton have great schedule, there could be a similar bandwagon stretch as last year with him and then a long drought, plus I don't have Mane so some offensive coverage of Soton at least during the early stretch. And it would also buy me some time to scout Deeney, Wilson, Sakho or some other emerging strikers or even switch to 352.

With Ozil you have a point, I just feel like this year we might see the superstar he once was. He had an offseason and might feel motivated again. I feel like he can be a consistent contributor, but more like an ast or two at best. Then I could use my early transfers elsewhere. I think having 2 solid mids (Fab and Ozil/Sterling) that you can leave in your line up for weeks is important not to go crazy with taking hits (took too many last season).

Yea the plan is just very rough now ofc 🙂 and ofc ready to tear it up, but I'm pretty sure I will part ways with Ivanovic and I will surely get Aguero in for that Watford game. I agree with you that Sterling plus Aguero can be deadly this season. Less pressure on Sterling to score as his finishing is not clinical to say the least, while Aguero is.

Lens has had a good record of scoring 1 in 3 I believe and has previously played under Advocaat for both AZ and PSV. He plays mostly from the left, but is more of a striker than a winger. He is quite fast, has decent dribbling skills and has fine finishing ability. Therefore, he will score goals for Sunderland. He is now 27 years old, a dutch international, is feeling confident and will be one of Sunderland's most important players this year. Advocaat also brought his own players to the club, so expect a slightly more attacking sunderland that will line up in a 4-3-3 formation with more speed on the wings. Van aanholt's overlapping runs will also allow Lens to drift inside looking to take up positions in the box.

He could be a great option and belongs in the list you compiled. I get that a wait and see policy is probably safer, but with the fixtures Sunderland have he should at least be included in the options to choose from.

Yeah good stuff Numb. There's also a few around that iffy 5.5m worth a mention, Brunt in particular rarely/never gets a mention, but @3.8 PPG / 5.5m = 69% and he won't be subject to the same rotation-risk that say Ki or Mahrez might be. Certainly one to consider when Kun might have to be bought.

Guys I need some help I think i am taking a huge risk with the 3 attackers and my defenders, my team is:
    Cech/krul
    Clyne baker shaw Cedric benaloune
    Hazard sterling depay Sinclair cazarola
    Benteke lukaku mitrovic

I got 0 in bank I like taking risk but I want more balanced team

    1. Daaf

      8 years, 9 months ago

You are correct, you are taking a huge risk. If you want a more balanced team you should make compromises somewhere. Right now, you are not doing that. Or not at the right places.

I would start with the goalkeeping situation, you can easily safe 0.5-1.0 by downgrading either Krul/Cech or both.

I would suggest downgrading some (1 or 2) of your midfield players. If you really like Hazard, keep him, but I think he is too expensive. Your forward line is not really terrible, you just invested in the wrong players. If you select Sakho and Pelle instead of Lukaku and Mitrovic your team is already miles better. Think of Depay as your punt, even Santi could be qualified that way. Or take Wilson/Deeney instead of Mitrovic, and you can upgrade Benteke to Kane ( But I guess you don't want to do that.

      Was this helpful?

I think you r right, I should replace krul cuz I already got an expensive Gk.
For the midfield do u think I should use 4 expensive midfielder and one cheap or I should make it more balanced?
I really like Benteke and I want him to remain I am not sure about the other two. Sakho is a guaranteed starter with Valencia injured. Lukaku is inconsisted but pelle is the same.
Do u think I need to upgrade my back line?

        Ty bro for your help

        1. Daaf
          • 8 Years

I think Pelle is alright. Sure, he didn't score much for the second halve of last season but he's had a full pre-season, looks sharp and did play over 3000 minutes in a tough league last year. I would back him. I'm undecided about Sakho too, but would have him over Mitrovic for sure.

Whether you'd want 4 strong midfield players or not depends on your forward line I suppose. If you go all out attack, you will have to downgrade somewhere plus there are valuable midfield players at almost every price range. Cheap strikers can outperform the more expensive ones, but selecting them is much harder. You also avoided the really cheap ones at 5.5, even they could be an option. Like I said, I prefer Sakho and Pelle over the other two, but selecting Rooney or Kane by downgrading Hazard or Sterling sounds fine too.

He's not bad value for 5.5 tbh, a PPG of 3.5 is 63%, not quite in the Ki/Brunt zone, but a tad ahead of Mahrez so not bad as a steady 5th.

You guys seem to know what you're talking about so I will see what you can tell me about my team. My starting 11 is:

    Stekelenburg
    Mert, Cahill, Cedric
    Cesc, Walcott, Hendo, Cazorla
    Pelle, Kane, Rooney

    Subs:,
    Schwarzer, Turner, Smith, Barry

Got Pelle in the team purely due to the fact that he is Southampton's no.1 Striker and their opening games look very favourable. Hoping Walcott will start and play up front and Rooney is the only striker left at Man United who seems capable of getting 20+ goals this season.

I think you stated your case very well mate. I did raise an eyebrow in a Roger Moore kind of a way at the 12m you spent on Mert & Cahill? I would consider Azpi & Kosc as much better value, weighing in at a whopping 9 PPG combined, 75% of 12m rates extremely highly amongst us trainspotters.

Pre-season stats show that it's been Terry & Cahill that have been most at risk from Zouma S-S. Yes the CS was different due to Azpi's yellow, leading to the bench for protection.
