Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

Not convinced about some of these RMT
See if you can pick this one apart....

    Given, Kenny
    Kompany, Hughes, Jagielka, Brown, Simpson
    Malouda, Toure, Wilshere, N'Zog, Ferguson
    RVP, Suarez, Odemwingie

Newcastle subs are a bit weak but allow me to fit in 4 players capable of being captain.

Yeah that could be a good move, I'm struggling to see what cover I can get with regard to Chelsea if I don't have Malouda as Lampard is the only guaranteed and costs a fortune.
Maybe Nasri and Dempsey in, Wilshere and Malouda out and a Jagielka downgrade but will wait on transfer news. Happy to leave it until after my two week holiday anyway.

Odemwingie is good from gw 3 onwards not the first two...I'd prefer Zamora to Odem for the first couple of weeks.

Simpson is fine...but Ferguson is weaker than Charles Hawtrey at a lace making competition.

RVP, Suarez, Toure and Malouda is probably costing you. Three heavy hitters will help the rest of your team. But which one to ditch?

Odem was scoring nearly every week end of last season and I hate having transfers planned out for the first few weeks as I never have enough transfers to jump on the early bandwagons and make some money.
Ferguson is awful but appears to have been mispriced as he is the only midfielder at 4m. I think you can get by with 13 outfield players at the start of the season before fatigue and injuries catch up later on.

I think at the beginning you will need 15 definite starters. A couple of injuries and a shocking discovery that one or two of your pics are just subs will mean you could be down to 10 outfield players within a week.

Its all a mixture of fixtures and form. Odem is great, but will he score against Man Utd or Chelsea, West Brom's first two games. As I said Zamora on current form is more likely to score more over those two.

I'm going for Zamora or another cheaper striker, but Odem is my top choice week 3.

From the EA SPORTS INDEX regarding bonus points.

Subjective factors relating to individual player skill levels or evidence of specific flair, such as a spectacular pass or goal are NOT included in the index.

I guess this plays into the hands of people who like all the stats in the game. Just don't think it will be right if a player dribbles the length of the pitch and scores a wonder goal and gets 0 bonus points. Big changes to the tactics this year.

Suarez. Better value. He also takes freekicks, plays in the most lucrative number 10 spot, bonus magnet. If he plays anything like he did at the end of last season, will be a must-have.

Rooney is a good choice though, and kind of under the radar around here. I'm going to leave off for a bit though seeing as they have somewhat tough opening fixtures, and are traditionally slow starters.

      Don't like it.

I know you're a Rovers fan, but Kalinic is a lost cause, and Samba isn't worth the price unless he moves to Arsenal.

Defense heavy, but not in the right players. Riise definitely overpriced. You need a bench sitter. Simpson will do.

Midfield is average. Don't like Tiote (word is Buzsaky could be the value pick if Taarabt goes). Duff probably not the best value. I like Sessegnon and Sinclair though.

Carroll is a brave punt, but I don't think he's as good fantasy wise as Suarez. We'll see. I'd go for Drogba instead.

    Hey everyone,

It wpuld be great to get a RMT on my first draft...Think I need to strengthen y midfield ut not sure where to find enough cash needed too.

    Downing, NZog, Tchoyi, Albrighton (Sinclair)

I say keep Suarez, after his performance in the Copa so far, i dont think there should be any questions over match sharpness. He also assured fans he'd be ready for the start of the season. Feeling optimistic about him for the start of the season, and his value will quickly rocket.

Do you need Vidic from the start? Cashley has better fixtures or you could downgrade and spend on midfield. Fulham have good fixtures, maybe look at getting on of there players in.
Brave choice not to go with Given but variety is nice.
Does anyone know how influential Murphy is these days and whether he takes penalties?

I think Demba Ba could be a bit of a monster this year. 7 goals in 12 games for a struggling West Ham aint all bad. Newcastle were pretty good going forward in the second half of last season even after Carroll went. If Ben Arfa is back in the creative mix too I predict big things for Demba....

    Hi guys,

I am looking at a lot of RMTs which seem to consider players way beyond GW3. The fact is that there is the international break between Aug 28 and Sep 10 and that I will most probably wild card for GW4 or GW5 to capture value and position myself on the unexpected studs.

So my only task is to look at what teams have strong first 3 GWs.
I see: Villa, Blackburn, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool, City, Newcastle, Wigan and Swansea.

The Copa America also excludes many players such as Suarez and Lucas until at least GW2.

So here is where I am getting at:

    Given (De Vries)
    Luiz - Kompany - Skrtel - Samba - (Simpson)
    VDV - NZogbia - Sinclair - Duff - (Tiote)
    RVP - Torres - (Holt)

VDV and RVP do not have great fixtures but I tend to think that they are fixture-proof...

Any opinion or things I should improve at this stage?

      Right now, QPR defence is

      Orr, Gorkks, Connolly, Hill

Hill is LB but don't be fooled, he isn't a wingback. Orr is the only one who bombs forward, Hill tends to stay back. Orr is good value at £4m.

      Not sure about Norwich.

In other words.. I would get Given & Begovic instead of Cech & Ruddy.

I would get Simpson unless Enrique moves to somewhere like Liverpool, Baines & Cole could be decent, Luiz not guaranteed a start and Riise could be good but is he guaranteed a start?

Sinclair looks a good pick, I would rather get Zamora upfront rather than Duff in mid-field from a Fulham attacking point of view. O'Hara and Albrighton could come good although Albrighton will probably get more assists.

Will Drogba start ahead of Torres? Suarez might not be ready for the start of the season, Zamora looks a good pick as does Ba. RVP could be essential but tough opening fixtures.

        Fantastic feedback, much appreciated

Looked at Cech for Chelsea's easy start.

Enrique is purely with a move to a bigger club in mind, Not confident on Luiz either, was what me have a look at making a slightly different team! Riise should start, Fulham in European action will confirm likely team.

I'd love to have an RVP Suarez Tevez (if he stays and repeats past form) frontline

Long way to go before the season starts, and expecting a few big signings to pose a dilemma or 2

For all those considering RVP, yes he is kind of fixture proof, but so is Rooney and his service will be infinitely better from Nani/Young/Valencia, then RVP gets form Wilshere/Ramsey/Arshavin

Same price. Both on pens, Rooney prob has more touches too i.e. more BP's??

With the Tevez saga up in the air it's really hard to plan. On one hand I want him at home to Swansea but the other I wish he would leave to make things easier.
Should he stay and his head is right I think he's a must have for the beginning of the season.

There's the obvious issue with Ballotelli, if tevez stays/ is replaced with someone like Aguero he'll be a masive rotation risk, but thats something to watch as pre season continues.

Also not sure about O'hara, his performances last year were very reliant on an in form doyle, who would chase everything, for the same price you should get Jarvis, he became an assist machine for wolves.

Finally, is lampard worth the investment? Certainly didnt provide nearly enough returns last time round. I say downgrade to malouda and use the funds to bolster your attack
