Champions League

Wednesday’s Notes From Europe – Matchday Three

Matchday Three of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game locked its doors shut for another fortnight yesterday evening. Here’s our round-up of the main highlights from Wednesday night’s eight fixtures:

Ukraine and Russia Ignite

If you’re hot on the twitter button you will undoubtedly have seen Jonathan Wilson (expert on pretty much all European football East of the Rhine) pine over this Eastern Bloc fixture and the highlights we’ve seen certainly back this up.

Shakhtar midfielder Willian returned from an injury picked up in the summer and saw the Zenit goalkeeper only able to paw his curling shot into the top corner after quarter of an hour. Roman Shirokov then snuck in by the last man and goalkeeper to grab an equaliser from virtually on the bye-line for the visitors – his day wasn’t complete though as later on his timid penalty was saved, costing him 2 vital fantasy points.

Just before the break, Luiz Adriano was on hand to turn a shoot instinctively into the bottom corner, similar to Jermain Defoe’s strike in Sunday afternoon’s tie at Newcastle. A calamity at the back for Shakhtar allowed Viktor Fayzulin free on goal to level affairs with a chip, ending the goalscoring at 2-2.

Fernando at the Double

With his domestic ban still carried on into this weekend’s trip to QPR, Fernando Torres used last night’s game against Genk to further suggest a return to form under the guidance of Andre Villas-Boas. The Spaniard grabbed a double in the 5-0 romp over a weakened Belgian side, adding to an early opener from Raul Meireles as Chelsea equalled their biggest ever Champions League win with an eye-catching performance. Goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou completed the rout, in a match that saw both Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge given the night off with the game at Loftus Road in mind.

Tedium at the Velodrome

I did not enjoy this game in the slightest. If I could have a time refund I’d be first in the queue. However, from a purely Fantasy Football perspective, this moribund performance from Arsenal and Marseille at least gave the visiting side something to cheer about at the death. Something other than the final whistle, at least.

After missing last weekend’s Premier League fixture with an ever so slightly damaged hamstring, Aaron Ramsey returned with a 15 minute cameo from the bench and scored the solitary goal in a less-than-memorable game. As a result, the Welshman has been added to our FPL Watchlist with the Gunners’ kind run of domestic fixtures in mind. Carl Jenkinson picked up a knee problem in the game and will be monitored ahead of Sunday’s game against Stoke. Marseille have now carried their poor form from Ligue 1 into the Champions League but sit just one point behind the Gunners in second place in Group F.

Barca and AC Get The Job Done

Continuing the slow, inevitable march towards qualification to the knockout stages, both Barcelona and AC Milan notched relatively low scoring (2-0 in both games) victories over much weaker opponents, with all due respect, of Plzen and BATE respectively.

Lionel Messi was his usual magnificent best but only walked away from the game with a single assist despite all of his efforts. Some rather ridiculous quick one touch interplay between the Argentine and his team-mate Andres Iniesta resulted in the first goal while David Villa was on hand to slot home a loose ball after he was upended in the box 10 yards from goal.

Getting AC Milan into first gear was recent Barcelona departee Zlatan Ibrahimovic, when a rebounded ball into the box fell kindly for the big Swede to grab the first striker’s goal for our Watchlist. Not one to be outdone, Kevin-Prince Boateng scored a thunderous strike from outside the box.

All fairly routine but could, and perhaps should, have been more for both of these sides.

Apoel Stay Top With Stalemate

Another draw on Matchday Three sees Group G remain the tightest and most unpredictable of the lot. FC APOEL of Cyprus would likely have been written off by most long before the tournament began and yet, as things stand, after a 1-1 draw away at FC Porto yesterday evening, they find themselves in the plum spot ahead of Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian champions.

Things looked to be going according to predictions when Hulk rifled in another almighty whallop of a free-kick inside the first quarter of an hour. APOEL’s 4.1m striking bargain Ailton never read the script, though, and grabbed an equaliser just a short while after to keep his side at the top of the group.

Valencia Left Kicking The Dirt – And Themselves

After absolutely dominating the first half of their trip away at the BayArena, Valencia were ultimately left ruing their profligacy in front of goal as Bayer Leverkusen came back from a turgid performance and a goal behind to win the game 2-1. Valencia striker Roberto Soldado this time turned provider as his ball into the box allowed Jonas to give his side the lead from a few yards out.

The visitors then failed to capitalise on the advantage as they continued to spurn chances and not long after the break. Andre Schurrle and Sidney Sam made the Spaniards pay with two early goals in the second half turning the game on its head completely as Leverkusen wound out 2-1 victors and cemented their place in second place in the group at the half-way stage.

German Champions Crumble

Borussia Dortmund may have grabbed themselves a hard earned and much needed victory in the Bundesliga last weekend, but their new adventures in Europe continued down a far rockier road as Olympiakos soundly beat them 3-1.

Jose Holebas, Rafik Djebbour and Francois Modesto scored the goals for the home side with Robert Lewandowski having scored a lovely first half equaliser from a Mario Gotze cross.

Next Matchday’s reverse of this fixture becomes a must win for Dortmund if they stand any realistic chance of making it a step further. Good job We’ll have a Scout Report (see our previous instalments on Porto and Milan/Napoli) on their squad coming up next week.

The semi-finals of the Asian Champions League would appear to be a bit more fiercely competitive than the European version. After Mamadou Niang scored a controversial goal to put the Al Sadd (of Qatar) 2-0 up away at Suwon Samsung Bluewings (South Korea) in the first leg, this little skirmish ensued.

    http://www.20min.ch/videotv/?vid=222947&cid=44

The result? One kung-fu kick, three red cards and a ten-minute interruption to the game. The second leg takes place next Wednesday.

Hi bds. I think they're almost certain to score roughly equally over the season but my pick would be Modric. He's found himself in plenty of good situations last few Spurs games I watched.

I'd almost certainly try to find the extra money for VDV if I wanted to invest in Spurs midfield myself though.

To be fair, my next choice after VDV and Adebayor would be Parker, he's been putting in plenty of good passes so far. If you're struggling for cash I'd say he's your man!

Yes, VdV would be the better option, but don't really have the funds. My only concern is that he doesn't seem to get full 90 minutes anymore.

Who is it that you so desperately want to lose? Is it Barton? I think your team looks pretty nice for the next weeks.

Yes, Barton. I can do straight swap to Modric/Bale or I can get VdV if I also transfer out Richards (I think City will concede in the upcoming games).

I see. Bit tempting that. On the other hand Richards is very tasty and I think City have some more clean sheets in them. After United away they got WOL, qpr, NEW. I'd be wary to break up such a good defence that you have. Hm.

Yes it is a little bit tempting. But I believe both Bale and Modric will outscore Barton, so that transfer does feel solid. Gonna watch the game tonight and make a decision afterwards.

    Silva, Nani, Gerrard, Anderson (Ferguson)
    Rooney, ?, Suarez

My current team for the weekend:

    Given

    Enrique, Taylor, Simpson

    Nani, Silva, Moses, M Petrov,

    Adebayor, Van Persie (c), Rooney.

subs: Ruddy, Kompany, Norwich Johnson, Gabbidon

0,0 in bank and 1 transfer.

    Any obvious changes required?

I am happy with the balance in my team and until I wildcard I tend to swap the big strikers due to fixtures.

Like next week I am planning to get Aguero in for Van Persie and so on. Thoughts?

Throwing this out their again as it got lost on the last thread 😉

    Given Ruddy
    Kompany Bosingwa Simpson Naylor Gabbidon
    Nani Mata Brunt Sinclair Moses
    Rooney Suarez Adebayor

2 frees, 0.3 in the bank.

Really unsure what to do this week. Only think im thinking is Brunt -> Petrov/Walter/Eagles etc. Im tempted to let the other transfer role over and then i can get some City coverage next week or something.

    Thoughts?

I have the same transfer dilemma, the plan was always to do Brunt to Petrov this week but I'm now considering perhaps hanging on - particularly with concerns over Simpson and Woodgate I might need two trannies next week. Not helpful I know.

If you're planning on going for Walters I'd definitely wait one week as I'd argue Brunt has the better fixture this week anyway.

That fair enough with only having one transfer but as ive got 2, i might as well use 1! Petrov seems the best option. Id like to go for Eagles but his play doesnt look that assured.

Agree with my fellow Boomer. If you're short you could fund it by down grading Moses to someone cheaper who also gets 2 ppg. You'll want to do it eventually......

Moses to another sub 5m midfielder is a horrible transfer to do tho. I hate having somone as cheap as Moses as it is. I know hes done sod all but least hes got good fixtures unlike others in his bracket.

Probably is Garg im a bit restricted. I havent got the funds really upgrade him and theirs no one else really around the same so the only option is to make extra funds but in my defence ive got the 2 reliable big hitters than 3 x 4m defenders so not oportunity for getting cash their. Midfield again ive got the 2 big hitters in Nani & Mata and then its hard to change Brunt or Sinclair for anyone to make money and im also happy with my strike force.

The only way i thought of getting money to upgrade Moses is doing Bosingwa -> Shawcross as Chelsea havent kept many cleanies, but he has high ownership and can bag attacking points.

Simpson might not play, I think the City and Utd game will be a tight game, unless there is an early goal/sending off or something. I still see Utd winning, maybe 1-0/2-1. Don't expect Silva or any City player to do much either, Ferguson really wants to win this one.

Anyone else thinking of doing Rooney to Suarez?

Good or bad move, I can't see Rooney outscoring him in the next two games. My only concern is will Suarez play because of the whole Evra thing, the home game to Norwich might be the perfect game to rest him.

Got both but would keep Rooney if I had him unless you can get him back without a loss of value. Suarez does not strike me as the sort of guy who would let a bit of bad press get to him! 😉

I think Rooney could score, but I'm more concerned about captain options, Suarez is a safe bet to me, Rooney has a very tough fixture in City. I also have Van Persie and Sturridge, but Stoke are a tougher proposition than Sunderland, and you never know what you are going to get with QPR, they could keep a clean sheet against Chelsea.

A minor irritation*, but I get wound up by people who misspell repeatedly the names of the players in their FPL teams i.e. Saurez, Adams, Boswinga, Adebayour etc.

(*No, I don't have OCD - I wouldn't dream of having a disorder where the letters in the abbreviation are in the wrong alphabetical order...)

Pluralising players names*. "your Gerrards, your Lampards, your Rooneys" etc. I think Redknapp started it, the dopey twat.

*Obviously if you're talking about Newcastle then "your Taylors, your Ameobis, your Lua Luas" is all fine.

I still cannot make my mind on Drogba vs Suarez. Which plan do you think better way to go ?

              Krul - (Vorm)
              Kompany - Bosingwa - Simpson - (N.Taylor) - (De Laet)
              Nani - Silva - Mata - Moses - (Dyer)
              Adebayor - Drogba - RVP

              A) Gw9 : Play Drogba vs QPR and save transfer.
Gw10 : Two free trades to fit Aguero or VDV in.

              B) Gw9 : Drogba > Suarez
Gw10 : One hit to fit Aguero or VDV in.

              Any idea please.
