Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – France

Having previously cast our eye over the talent to consider from the squad of Euro hopefuls Roy Hodgson has banded together, it’s time to see what kind of amuse-bouche England’s longstanding rivals from across the channel can offer Fantasy managers…

As mentioned in our last article we will witness France kick off their Group D campaign on Monday June 11 with a 5.00pm match against England. Saving on travel expenses, they will then play another tie in the Donbass Arena exactly four days later but this time against joint-hosts Ukraine at 5.00pm. A cross-country flight to the nation’s capital will see a game against Sweden on Tuesday June 19 at 7.45pm tidy up the group stages for France.

Group D is ripe for an upset or two. Any of the four sides are capable of either making it to the knockout stages or equally floundering at the first hurdle, leaving ample time for introspection from a nation’s press. France seem to have exorcised some of their past demons experienced under previous boss Raymond Domenech, Sweden have a team capable of threatening anyone on their day, England have enough to talent to pester the final eight and hope for more, while the Ukraine will be banking on the boost that tournament hosts often receive in this situation.

The Road To Qualification

Laurent Blanc’s outfit were handed what looked like one of the easiest groups to traverse but it still took them to the tenth and final fixture to secure qualification. With a home defeat against Belarus in their first match, things couldn’t have started any worse but four solid 2-0 victories on the bounce saw Blanc’s men quickly get themselves back on track. A draw away at Belarus (and then another in Romania a little later) made things a little more precarious for Les Bleus heading into the final furlong. In the end, it was a 78th minute penalty from Samir Nasri at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final fixture that allowed France to keep their closest rivals at bay and clinch top spot in their group.

Blanc’s side were hardly scintillating in attack, scoring more than two goals just the once – they grabbed 15 goals over their 10 matches, finding the net twice on five occasions. At the back, they shipped a mere four goals over qualifying and, with six clean sheets returned, didn’t concede more than one goal in any of those 10 games.

Most Appearances: Lloris (10), Rami & Malouda (9), M’Vila & Nasri (8)

Most Goals: Benzema, Gourcuff & Malouda (3), Remy (2)

Most Assists: Nasri, Benzema & Payet (2)

The Likely Lads

As the captain of his national side, there isn’t anyone safer to select from France’s backline than the hot property that is Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. With those afore-mentioned six clean sheets and four goals conceded, France had the second best defensive record in qualifying, with only Italy shipping less. All of which indicates that the 6.0 price-tag in the McDonald’s Euro 2012 game is a more than fair price point, considering Lloris is found a mark or two cheaper than the goalkeepers regarded at the very top of the echelon.

Samir Nasri is fast becoming one of the most important members of Blanc’s starting XI – his aforementioned crucial penalty against Bosnia-Herzegovina last October only typifying this fact. The recent Premier League winner will be travelling to the Ukraine on cloud nine and his manager and team-mates alike will be looking to the 8.5 McDonald’s offering to help his nation make a mark on this tournament. Nasri also appears to be in the driving seat for corners and free-kicks, further enhancing his appeal for Fantasy managers.

Priced at 9.5, Franck Ribery doesn’t come cheap. The Bayern Munich man arrives on the back of a strong domestic campaign, with 12 goals and 12 assists in 27 starts for the Bundesliga runners-up. Despite Nasri’s lesser price and set-piece duties, Ribery has so far proven to the more popular pick with Fantasy managers – over 13.5% have snapped him up, more than double the City man’s 6.3% ownership, with his opener in Thursday’s friendly win over Serbia serving a timely reminder of his capabilities.

Fresh off his most prolific season to date, helping Real Madrid amass 100 La Liga points and topple Barcelona, Karim Benzema is rich in form heading into this summer’s tournament. Very much anticipated as the leading striker in France’s 4-2-3-1 formation, Benzema should be relied upon to push his country through the group stages and into the knock-out arena of Euro 2012. Costing just 9.5 in the McDonald’s format, he, like his fellow countrymen, comes in at a lower price than that of the heavy hitters. This, in turn, opens up a nice value for money option for Fantasy managers needing a striker without having to break the bank.

Cheeky Punt

With some incredibly rotten luck Bacary Sagna managed to break his fibula not once but twice last season – the most recent fracture coming just a week before the end of the league campaign and ruling the Arsenal man out of the Euro 2012 tournament. His loss, however, will ultimately prove to be advantageous to Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy. The right-back has caught the eye of many managers in recent times, with Sir Alex Ferguson and Alan Pardew supposedly keen admirers of late, and at a 5.5 McDonalds price his under the radar status could prove a handy differential for those Fantasy managers aware of this fact. Underlining his potential at both ends of the pitch, Debuchy grabbed a goal in this week’s home win over Iceland, as the French battled back to overcome their visitors 3-2.

Florent Malouda hardly had the most impressive of domestic campaigns with Chelsea, starting just 11 of the Blues’ league games, but he was an integral figure in helping France qualify for the finals. Malouda played all but one of his nation’s 10 games and ended as joint-top scorer with Benzema on three goals. Factor in the occasional share of corners and a price of 8.0, he has been an overlooked asset in the attacking midfield three thus far – with just 0.7% ownership, there’s a definite case for him as a decent differential; his strike from outside the box in the Serbia win attests to that.

Came across this on Twitte on Kuyt's move.

Kuyt was signed by LFC in the same summer as United signed Carrick. 1 was loved for running around a bit, the other hated for winning medals.

I just did a trial GW 2 team.

I ended up swapping 5 players from my GW 1 team. Somehow, I just don't see how it's particularly useful.

I realized I wouldn't be getting in extra German. I'd be losing my Dutch for English and Spanish. I'd get an Italian defender, and buy more French attack.

I need to get Benzema and maybe another striker in (possibly CR7) plus maybe Lescott and Young (depends on whether I hold CR7 for the Holland game or get Rooney). Need to get an Italian defender, Kadlec and ditch Yarmolenko. Will likely be GW2 for me I think.

I was thinking of a few of those moves but how do I fit them in from this GW1 team:

          Chalkias, Given
          Zhirkov, Perquis, Strinic, Alba, Debuchy
          Shirokov, Ozil, Afellay, Nasri, Yarmolenko

Yarm and Ibra to Young and Cassano, RvP to CR7

Debuchy to Lescott. If unds are needed, get Menez over Nasri.

what would do with this team for GW2 if you were me

            Same keepers

Ignashevich, Pizszcek, other 3 the same

Same mid bar Nasri (I have Srna)

Srna should go GW2. Get Young in -1.5m
Maybe Gnasher or Alba to Lescott for +1m
              Pizszcek to Perquis +.5m
              Ibra to Cassano

Not sure about Yarm, thinking of keeping him unless I can find some dosh for a big hitter.

Do you not fancy RVP against the Germans? I think it will be a high scoring game. RVP vs Mertesacker...

Mertesacker may not start. It could be Hummels and Badstuber.

I fancy some France coverage, so need either Nasri or Bezema as well. That may require me to dump Afellay or Yarm. I also fancy CR7 v Denmark. May get him and switch Srna to Nasri.

I rate Spain CS-chances very highely. Predicting 1-0 for them over Italy. So he's worth the cash.

Ignashevich is a CB, decent goalscoring threat and takes FK's. Differential I reckon
Zhirkov is most attacking but only got 1 assist in the qualifiers. 0 goals.
Anyukov is very attacking. 3 assists in qualifiers. Differential too.

In the CL game there weren't very many price rises tbh, it won't affect the budget much.

There are only 6 Gameweeks, not many of your players will rise twice for you to make a profit.

The ones who rise will probably be dirt cheap mids or defenders who scored once or twice and everyone hops on the bandwagon. (See F. Frei in the UCL game)

Posted this in the heat of the deadzone last night but shall repost here and now for anybody who wants it. It's my preview of Ukraine 🙂

    THE DEFENCE

Don’t be fooled by the cheap prices of the Ukrainian defence. Over their past 21 friendlies, this defence has conceded an enormous 35 goals. On top of this, they will host Sweden who scored 31 goals in their qualifying campaign alone. A clean sheet in this game looks extremely unlikely.

If you are mad enough to have a punt at the defence, then you’ll be disappointed to know that we can’t be 100% sure who’ll be Ukraine’s number one goalkeeper for their first ever European Championships match. It was looking increasingly likely that Andriy Pyatov would start between the sticks but this notion was delivered a blow when he failed to play a single minute of Ukraine’s most recent friendly. However, there’s every chance that he’ll be recalled for the next friendly and indeed the tournament itself. Even at 5.0 million, he’s looking a little overpriced.

Defender Yaroslav Rakitskiy has netted twice in his last 10 international games and is nailed on to start all the matches (perhaps even in midfield) so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise for him to add to this tally during the tournament. He is the most expensive of all the Ukrainian defenders, though, at 5.5 million.

For 1 million cheaper, we have Yevhen Khacheridi who has started the last 3 games for the side. Normally, a price tag of 4.5 million alone would be tempting, but the team’s defensive frailties are too large a concern for even mild interest to be taken here.

    THE ATTACK

There’s no doubt that Ukraine’s matches in Euro 2012 will be full of goals because they may have conceded 35 goals in their last 21 matches, but managed to net 36 at the other end. Playing against a Swedish side struggling for clean sheets, a one week punt at least on a Ukrainian attacker looks an excellent move. The main source of attention so far is midfielder Andriy Yarmolenko who costs 7.0 million in the McDonald’s game. Interest is ripe in the Dynamo Kyiv left-footer as he has scored 5 times in his last 9 international matches and bagged 30 goals for his club in his 84 first team appearances. His most recent international match saw him get 2 assists in Austria on Friday.

At 6.5 million, we have Oleh Gusev who has 4 goals in Ukraine’s last 3 matches and is statistically Ukraine’s most in-form player heading into the tournament. He also took the team’s last spot-kick which increases his appeal further. Anyone looking for a differential can seriously consider this guy; his ownership is at just 0.7% compared to Yarmolenko’s 6.3%.

If you’re looking for something even cheaper, then midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka might be a decent pick. Many believe he won’t be part of the first choice 11, but having started Ukraine’s last 6 games, there’s every chance that he’ll get his fair share of minutes in Group D. He also managed 2 goals in those 6 games so has a proven eye for goal and may even prove to be an out of position prospect as a forward. It will only cost you 5.5 million to acquire his services.

Finally, how could I write about Ukrainian football without the inclusion of Andriy Shevchenko? The 2004 Ballon d’Or winner will of course be predominantly remembered for his incredible career at AC Milan and becoming the third-highest scorer in the history of European club football. However, since joining Dynamo Kyiv in 2009, his eye for goal hasn’t disappeared; he still managed 23 goals in 53 matches. Looking at his statistics is pointless, though, because with Shevchenko you’re purchasing him based on the fact that he’s captaining a host nation in what will probably be his last major international tournament. Surely, if he’s ever going to resurrect his legendary goal scoring form, it will be this summer? It will cost you 7.0 million if you have a hunch.

    IN SUMMARY

    • The defence in a no-go area but Yaroslav Rakitskiy is the best from a bad bunch due to his added goal threat.
    • Andriy Yarmolenko is the best attacking option and consequently the most popular Ukrainian in the game.
    • Oleh Gusev and Yevhen Konoplyanka both provide cheaper ways into a free-scoring Ukrainian attack.

Not surprised one bit but I personally think he's making a massive mistake playing Doyle up front. Think Walters and Long can cause far more problems for centre-back than Doyle.

Doyle is a bit better at keeping the ball up IMO

Lewandowski GW 1, Ronaldo GW 2 imo. Unless you have Kuba.
