Injury Concerns for Pardew Ahead of Spurs Clash

While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

If you have Baines you should really be playing him every game, especially at home. I'd drop Kaboul or Noble to play him and maybe look at trying to get one more big midfielder in. Other than thats I think it's great 🙂 .

Is anyone going with 5 outfield DGWers? I'm thinking it's too risky as you'd have no subs (assuming no hits were taken in GW2 or GW3). Think I might have to settle for 3 x CHE and 1 x REA

I think 5 is too risky as it leaves you no wiggle room if anything unexpected happens. Plus it's hard to see RDG DGW's picking up more than 2 pts versus Chelsea.

4 points at the end of the season is a whole bunch of places! Also with 5 (and Torres to Roo in GW2 anyway) leaves a full team for GW3 with still 1FT in the bank if needed for any other players. Depends if you're punting much; for me all my others are pretty safe options

It 4pts in the immediate future but potentially transfers used after. And if you need to take a hit because of it then that advantage is immediately wiped out plus you had to field crappy players.

Too much of a gamble for me especially since Reading aren't great but different strokes for different folks. Be pretty boring if we all had the same teams.

I am. I have 6 DGWers. I'm doing Terry, Cole/Ivanovic, Ramires, Federici, Guthrie, Pogrebnyak.

I'm reasonably confident that my other 9 players are nailed on, so as long as I get in 2 nailed on transfers in by GW3, I shouldn't have any problems of fielding fewer than 11 players in GW3.

Then again, I backed Germany to beat Italy in the Euros, and Balotelli left me with 8 players in the final. So maybe don't listen to me.

+1 haha that made me laugh.

I absolutely dominated fantasy football for the entire Euros, and I did the same, albeit Italy beating Spain in the final (after beating an amazing German team) and I ended up with egg on my face.

I'll probably have 0 Reading. A dgw including che isn't much of a draw for a newly-promoted side.

Maybe the keeper for save points.

If your Reading players start both games, you basically get a bonus 2 points per Reading player, even if you think that Reading will get nothing form Chelsea.

Also, stranger things have happened than Reading beating Chelsea. If history has taught us anything, anyone can beat anyone in this league.

I am. Going to have Fed, Gunter, Robson-Kanu, Terry, Ramires and Torres (C). Then swap Torres for Rooney week 2, and Terry for Vidic week 3. That should give me 11 players for week 3 without taking any hits. Ramires will probably stay in my team long term, and the Reading players become bench fodder and are slowly upgraded with spare funds. It's risky and I might be forced to take hits but hopefully it will pay off.

At the minute i have Torres, cole and mata who can be switched for lamps or hazard at any moment, i also have pog as i think he will produce at the double, even if he starts, he will get 4, 2 more than any other cheap shit, he could even get an assist, that is my guess. First match 5 pts second 2. I also have 2 reading 4.0 starters on the bench - just in case, you never know, they may get 12 points a piece 🙂

Maybe this is just me trying to convince myself that owning Aguero over Tevez is a good idea. But some stats to suggest that could not be that wrong on this one.
    Tevez goals scored season
    09-10- 23(5penalties) 6assists
    10-11- 20(6 penalties) 7assists

So given the fact that he is not the pen taker anymore and less likely to play the full 90 than he was a couple of years ago. I could suggest that he will find it hard even to replicate what Adebayor did last season. 15 goals with 5 assist would be the max for him IMO.
And Aguero is on pens with Balo out for now. Thoughts?

    Just a thought.

If they were the same price then yes extremely valid but it depends on what you do with that extra 2.5m. Is that capable of bridging the gap in points (or realistically more due to Captaincy)? God knows.

Just saying that even if you dont captain either player, than Aguero will be better value than him. Plus he is a better captain option. I predict a 10 goal gap between them, that will also give mayor bonus advantage to Aguero. Plus he should be a better captain choice.

yes but you would have 2.5mil towards "another" possible captain choice, so there could be a big points gap between him and 1 of your lower priced players......its a tricky one!
