Scout Scribbles – Wounded Magpies

Hatem Ben Arfa picks up a hamstring injury as Newcastle secure progress to the Europa League knockout stages. Jonjo Shelvey is fielded as a lone forward and fires Liverpool ahead against Young Boys, Moussa Dembele returns from injury in Spurs’ goalless draw with Lazio, while Theo Walcott is ruled out of Arsenal’s trip to Villa…

Newcastle 1 Maritino 1
Sylvain Marveaux’s goal helped clinch a point that secured Newcastle’s progress but last night’s match came at a cost. Alan Pardew went into the match with 10 players out through injury or suspension but saw Hatem Ben Arfa limp out of the proceedings with a hamstring injury. Post-match, Newcastle have confirmed that the Frenchman has been ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Southampton by Pardew. Although Demba Ba came through 50 minutes unscathed after climbing off the bench to replace Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse could also add to Pardew’s selection woes after he was subbed off with a thigh problem on 50 minutes.

“He [Cisse] got a kick on the thigh and he was starting to limp with it because it tightened up over half-time, so unfortunately I had to take him off when I didn’t really want to. With no striker on the bench, it was proving problematic…Shola looks doubtful for the next couple of weeks but Papiss, I think, has got a good chance for Sunday. Hopefully we have done enough tonight to protect him.”

With Yohan Cabaye now expected to be sidelined for six weeks due to groin surgery and Jonas Gutierrez still a weekend doubt with a hamstring problem, Pardew’s side could be without several of their regulars for the St Mary’s game. Factor in Fabricio Coloccini’s suspension and Newcastle’s winless away record so far and Southampton’s Fantasy owners will be a little more optimistic heading into Gameweek 13.

Newcastle Starting XI: Krul; Simpson, S Taylor, Coloccini, Santon; Bigirimana, Anita; Sammy Ameobi (Abeid 76), Ben Arfa (Ba 40), Marveaux; Cisse (Amalfitano 50)

Lazio 0 Tottenham 0
Hugo Lloris was selected ahead of Brad Friedel again between the sticks for the trip to Italy, while Steven Caulker returned after missing out last weekend at Arsenal. Andre Villas-Boas selected Gylfi Sigurdsson ahead of Aaron Lennon on the right, with Clint Dempsey tucked in behind Emmanuel Adebayor up top. Frustratingly for Spurs, Gareth Bale had a goal disallowed last night which means they still have all to play for heading into their final group game. On the positive side, Moussa Dembele returned as a second-half sub after missing the last few with a hip problem.

Spurs Starting XI: Lloris; Walker, Caulker, Vertonghen, Naughton; Sandro, Carroll (Dembele 76); Sigurdsson (Lennon 63), Dempsey (Defoe 63), Bale; Adebayor

Liverpool 2 Young Boys 2
Jonjo Shelvey as the lone striker was vindicated Brendan Rodgers’ bold decision to field him as the lone striker by firing the hosts ahead last night. Joe Cole also played his part with a goal and assist, though Andre Wisdom’s owners were given cause for concern after the full-back was subbed off after 31 minutes, with Steven Gerrard his replacement. Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling also climbed off the bench – the Uruguayan was afforded a half-hour second-half run out, while Sterling came on with 15 minutes left on the clock. A win would have been enough to take the hosts through by a late leveller for the Swiss outfit means Rodgers’ side head to Udinese in a fortnight’s time with their hopes of progress still on the line. Post-match, the Liverpool boss seemed confident Wisdom will be available for the weekend trip to Swansea:

“It was a precaution really, he had a little knock in his knee. Hopefully he’ll be fine but it meant we had to adapt.”

Liverpool Starting XI: Reina; Wisdom (Gerrard 31), Skrtel, Carragher, Downing; Henderson, Sahin; Cole (Sterling 75), Suso (Suarez 61), Assaidi; Shelvey

In Other News
West Brom boss Steve Clarke also rolled out an injury update yesterday. The Scot revealed Gareth McAuley is available once again after missing out against Chelsea last weekend, though Youssouf Mulumbu is sidelined with a hamstring injury. While the latter could return for the Gameweek 14 trip to Swansea on Wednesday evening, his absence at the weekend may see James Morrison drop deeper into central midfield – Morrison moved out of his regular role in “the hole” and covered there recently for Claudio Yacob. Clarke also delivered some potentially worrying news for Ben Foster’s owner. The keeper will miss out with a groin injury this weekend for the third game in a row and with the problem requiring further assessment, it seems his return might not be imminent:

“Ben won’t be fit this week. We’re thinking he may have a similar problem on the other side now so we’ll get that checked out.”

Any lengthy absence for Foster could bring Boaz Myhill onto the radar as a cut-price keeper option. At 4.4 in FPL, West Brom’s strong home record and rotation with Stoke could make him one to consider is the Foster prognosis is pessimistic.

Martin Jol gave Fantasy managers a window into his thinking ahead of Fulham’s trip to Stoke tomorrow. After confirming Bryan Ruiz and Alec Kacaniklic are out for a fortnight with hamstring injuries, the Cottagers boss admitted he has plenty of permutations to consider up front, with Ruiz’s absence denying Jol the chance to partner the Costa Rican with Dimitar Berbatov for the fourth game running:

“Berbatov could drop into a number 10 role with Mladen Petrić coming in. We could play in a 4-4-2 or we could play with a 4-4-1-1, so that is the decision we have to make. We know Stoke well; they are very strong, especially at home so it’s only a matter of whether we go with Hugo Rodallega up front or Petrić up front. Hugo was playing on the left against Sunderland because Richardson was not there and Kaca was not there. Petrić came on at the weekend and he scored so he can play with Berbatov. They do well in training together. [But] Rodallega can make a good pair with Berbatov too, and Berbatov can play on his own. Giorgos [Karagounis] can play in the hole too so there are a few options.”

Arsene Wenger’s Thursday update came with the news that Theo Walcott and Andre Santos are out of Arsenal’s trip to Villa. Walcott’s absence is particularly frustrating from a Fantasy perspective – having returned to the first XI in Gameweek 11, he has produced a goal and three assists in the last couple and has already been transferred in by almost 14,000 Fantasy managers. Bearing in mind that the Gameweek 14 deadline is 7.30pm on Tuesday evening, Walcott’s owners may choose to hold after Wenger revealed he could be ready for the following day’s trip to Everton, though the return of Gervinho may be enough to persuade many to sell him on. The latter is expected to be sidelined for 10 days, though with Kieran Gibbs now fit and available, his absence will be minimal at best, given his recent peripheral role.

Tony Pulis has revealed that Stoke face an anxious wait on the availability of Andy Wilkinson after the full-back sustained an injury in Monday’s draw at West Ham. The Potters website claim Wilkinson is “unlikely” to feature this weekend and their manager went on to praise the display of replacement Ryan Shotton at Upton Park:

”Shots came on and did really well on Monday, so he’ll be in the frame. We are concerned Wilko may have damaged a disc, but we must wait to see what the scan shows before we know the extent. “

Any potential length of absence for Wilkinson would leave FPL managers with one less route into the tightest home defence in the league. Shotton’s classification as a midfielder, allied with regular left-back Marc Wilson’s broken leg, means Geoff Cameron, at 4.7, is comfortably the cheapest Stoke defender on offer.

no you'll get away with it! arsenal won't win thse games too comfortably and there is no good cover unless giroud or walcott show consistancy! podolski is a negative oop and cazorla plays as deep as arteta sometimes which isnt good for a 9.5m midfielder

Explosion imminent series of table are throwing some differentials out there. Shorey for chances created 😯 Should we considering Shorey as a 7th midfielder, a mini Baines?

Fancy Lambert and Defoe this weekend to explode

Hardly. Unless your willing to play Shorey over the course of the season every week to benefit from his assist potential.

Course he only has one of them so far and not much CS potential.

          Meh.

Yep...he is the Tesco value Baines that every dgw team should have. I leapt on him as soon as Doosra put his table up....eye popping stats for a 4.1 defender. Got me a couple of nice scores over the last two weeks.

I'm personally holding off from comparing him to Baines until we see more. He's almost matchin Baines in terms of creativity, yes, but he's not as involved so I don't know if he will be as much of a BAP magnet and doesn't have penalties.

Also, Reading are surely at the lower end (bottom maybe) of the league for chances created into assists. So normally he would have to create a lot more chances than other players to match their assists.

For £4.1m he certainly seems a steal so it's minimum risk I suppose.

Jelavic is still undoubtedly a class finisher so there's no reason why some of Baines' future created chances won't be converted. Like they mentioned on the scoutcast, Everton have been wasteful and I'd expect improvement.

He's got bonus with no assist in the 1-1 with Qpr, plus another last week when he got an assist.

Reply to Brian from the last page (and hopefully the start of a new discussion!):

Interesting question regarding projecting assist point for players whose created chances come from mostly/solely from crosses. I'm not aware of any work that's been done on the conversion of chances created by crosses vs the conversion of chances created by through balls. We would need historic data for it first and I don't think there's a filter in the stats part of the members area. Any FPL statisticians out there?

The easy part I suppose would be nailing down how many CS we can expect, Pens and basic starting points.

The assist returns seem much more random and harder to predict. Have not seeing a concrete model on it, but i'm not statistician.

You can work on the assumption that for every X amount of chances created, on average you can expect 1 assist. The X usually varies from (roughly speaking) 5-15 depending on the player and quality his of team-mates that he's creating chances for. The theory is that you can make a forecast based on the historical data.

For example, over a large sample size (say 2 seasons), the league average is 1 assist every chance created. You can then look at a team's and an individual player's average conversion rate and create a forecast from those three figures.

This model doesn't account for whether those assists/chances created came from crosses, through balls, or even simple lay-offs that lead to individual goals or lucky rebounds in the box that still count as assists on FPL.

Yeah I was thinking you could get Everton's conversion rate of chances as a team, then find the average conversion rate for crosses (as you'd expect Baines chances conversion rate to be lower due to the nature of crosses vs through balls).

But again, i'm no great shakes at stats. But I imagine it is workable, you just would not usually do it for an individual due to all the work it would take to do it for every player in the league.

Exactly. I can tell you what Baines' convrsion rate is for the season as he hasn't provided any through balls but that's not very useful in isolation. Also, in order to work out if it's above/below league average, we'd have to have a reliable point of reference and it would be extremely difficult and time consuming to do it for all other players in the league. I'm not even sure how we'd do it give the current stats available in the members area.

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

At least we have a basis behind it.

I'm guessing the Scout team could have access to the relevant data and grind it out.

They have the people as well (Glover, Mark etc) with the skills.

Not sure it would be something allot of people would be interested in over here though and they are busy people of course. I have seeing Glover's work for example take allot of flack on here (unfairly imo). It is a developing field for football and many normal fans don't take to it yet.

Depends on the attack Fergie puts out. Could be RVP and Rooney up front or RVP and Chico/Welbeck with Rooney in behind. You would think it will be Young and Valencia on the wings but in the narrow formation he plays in Europe, he hasnt used the wingers.

I would play with wingers (Young & Valencia) Scholes and Carrick, Rooney and RVP up front, in which case Young could get plenty of assists, but he isnt a nailed on starter imo.

Struggling to pick a captain, hoping my esteemed FFers can help sway me. Instinct was Bale, but after a demoralising defeat to Le Arse, then a trip to Italy he'll be knackered. Then thought Cazola (been good on the road), but with Walcott out will the Gunners lose a bit of their recent momentum? Too much of a weird stroy line going on at Chelsea to hand it it to Tevez (Benitez will get a honeymoon, right?). So I'm leaning towards Valencia, United will rack up the goals, surely he'll create a few of them....thoughts?

    Cuellar---Smalling---Baines

    Begovic
    Clark Baines Rafael
    Sterling Nolan Ramirez Mata
    Ba Jelavic RVP (C)

    Subs: Demel, Nelsen

Plan was to save FT but then Fellaini got booked and I need to play Nolan. Was considering Nolan -> AJ or Sessegnon but not sure really.

          13 Home to WBA
          14 Home to QPR
          15 Away to Norwich
16 Home to Chelsea, home to Reading

Red flag is treated like an injury, so Fellaini needs more NTO than if he was not suspended. But FISO is more accurate and I would be fairly sure that he'll drop in price tonight.

Non Suarez owners, what's your current thinking?

Wait until he hopefully gets his 5th yellow and then bring him in?
Ignoring, as you have Sterling and think he'll be involved in enough goals so good 'cover'?
Buying regardless and will just take his 1 match ban on the chin?
    Avoiding altogether?

Hi folks, would appreciate an opinion on these potentially transfers (2 Free):

Rafael > Billy Jones, Bale > Maloney, Berbs > Van Persie

Have a feeling Rafa might get rested and the other transfer is purely to fund VanP.

    Would give me:

    Begovic
    Cameron, Baines, Cuellar
    Cazorla, Maloney, Mata, Johnson
    Van Persie, Tevez, Suarez

    Rudd, Morrison, Clyne, Fellaini

Well my problem is (other than the inability to read this morning, including my own posts) is that my midfield is a nightmare on who to take out. I'm thinking maybe a punt on Rooney may be on the cards, or to possibly transfer Berbs to Podolski/Giroud and downgrade Morrison to Puncheon.

Puncheon, rather than Maloney. Go, go, go. 🙂

Yeah he was on my radar mainly for price and for the fact that I'm sick of seeing Morrison continually score points from my bench 😀

Yeah I've thought about it, only to downgrade Morrison and upgrade to Aguero though. City + Silva = greater potential for Tevez imo. Assuming he gets the games of course.

Midfield is quite weak downgrade either of Tevez or Suarez and beef up the midfield

Yeah I could do but I took out VP before to Suarez and he's been pretty good to me since! Tevez is a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment, assuming he avoids rotation, I think Silva might help his chances of bigger hauls. My midfield before the transfers is mata, bale, santi, fellaini, morrison - is that weak?

Damnit I'm sticking with the front 3 I have and will ride out this week and next if necessary 🙂

    Tevez Defoe RVP

Just my opinion, but I'd look at another option for Taarabt myself. Like the Larsson pick btw

This is what's putting me off as well. But saying that, MON is known for capitalising on a result like that to get his players going.

    Begovic
    Baines Rafael cueller
    michu cazorla sterling nasri
    rvp ba berba

Have 1FT and 0.7m….good to go??

nasri is the only sticking point but AJ is the only option but i have my doubts on him.

could always do nasri + ba/berba >> morrison/walters + suarez/tevez worth a hit? but superconfused on whether to keep ba and berba for this week.
