The Community Round Up

In our latest community round up we look back at the hottest topics over the last week, and find that community members are still in a spin over rotation issues. We also discover which members of the community are ‘dullards’ or ‘mavericks’ and take a look at the community leagues that are currently taking over this summer.

As always, those running community tournaments are urged to email me ahead of the new season at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk for inclusion in forthcoming community round-up articles.

The Hottest Topics

The three promoted Premier League sides of Hull, Crystal Palace and Cardiff are likely to produce some budget gems over the course of the 2013/14 season. Thankfully Demi was on hand this week to run the rule over these promoted team’s set piece takers, who may well tempt investment.

Rotation spreadsheets continue to dominate discussion after the Premier League fixture computer did its thing. Among the best rotation posts were Portsmouth Bubblejet‘s look at home and away rotating pairs over the entire season and Yes the Sess!‘s post about the best budget goalkeeping rotation pairs.

Our own In Tommy We Trust has also been looking at three-way and incredibly five- way rotation options. Ubers, the nickname for those who favour an uber cheap defence, have clearly been in their element this week.

Elsewhere the “deadzone”, the name given to the period between midnight and 8am when many of our overseas community members join the discussion, continues to show the daylight dwellers, tucked up in bed, what they are missing out on. Among the most thought provoking discussions in the wee small hours was Triggerlips’s look at what makes a great FPL player and why is it that Mark always seems to beat Granville?

Its been six years since Jose Mourinho last managed in the Premier League, which has prompted Mathmo to take a look at his recent history with Real Madrid in terms of attacking and defensive strategies. This proved to be a fascinating insight into how Chelsea could be set to play next season.

In addition, Teddy has also been helping the community out by searching out next season’s most attacking defenders .

If you’re new to Fantasy Football, Fantasy Premier League or just faced with introducing some novices to your mini-league, you will surely be interested in In Tommy We Trust’s epic post that provided a beginners guide, offering the key strategies for success for newcomers and some timely reminders for more experienced managers.

Lanley Staurel’s research into how last season’s top FPL managers spread their cash across the four positions was another hot topic that proved popular and offered valuable insight.

And finally, we asked in our daily hot topics which members of the community are “dullards”, who like to make safe choice, which are the “mavericks” who take risks and which are “dullardinhos”, a phrase invented by Fantasy Football Scout’s suspension tightrope custodian Anorak to describe a dullard with a dash of flair. In a similar vein Lateriser12 asked whether gut instinct can be trusted?

Community Leagues

The FFS Uefa group’s transfer window simulation reached its Round 2 stage this week with community members organised into Premier League club themed groups bidding for defenders. Manchester United, owned by Count of Monte Hristo emerged triumphant with the acquisition of big name players Thiago Silva and Sergi Ramos. Eboue and Doosra’s management of West Ham continue to focus on flair, with their signing of Eliaqum Mangala taking their opponents by surprise. Round 3 bidding for midfielders has already begun and the deadline is this Saturday, June 29 at 2359 BST. For those looking to join the game, you can sign up here.

Conrad’s Confederation Cup Fantasy Football 2013 competition is edging towards its thrilling conclusion. Conrad has created the game himself and  explains that it is a stripped down version of typical Fantasy football games with 3-4-3 formation only. Ahead of tonight’s first semi-final MB10 is in the lead with 166 points, followed by Patrick Star on 162 points with Conrad back on 153.

Anyone know how the Barcelona B team works?

Am I right in thinking they're just the Barcelona reserve team that play in a lower division?

    Are they any good?

Just trying to gauge how good this Luis Alberto is.

£7m could be a bargain when you consider Alex Oxlade-ChambElaine cost Arsenal £12m. Or it could be a big waste.

Barcelona B and Real Madrid Castilla both play in the Segunda division. These are the only teams in the league who cannot be promoted to Liga BBVA.

Barcelona B acts as a feeder team to the first team. As with all professional clubs you get some reserve players who are unlikely to make the step up but there is good opportunity to work their way into the first team. Barcelona have their u-9's playing good football so they have talented players from the bottom up and will continue to produce top players.

Oh man i'm glad i saw this question lol, i might be more obsessed with the B team than the first team.

Alright so i've watched a lot of Barca B matches and to be honest, he definitely wasnt the player that caught my eye the most, it would generally be Deulofeu, Rafinha, and Dongou but i don't think i've ever seen him play badly. Him being a starter in that system and with him only really being on loan so management would be tempted not to play him, should give you an idea of how good he is. His only problem in my opinion is the position he's going to play, he reminds me a little of Bojan in that i cant think of the best position for him (although his style is quite different to Bojan's, he relies on assists just as much as goals so hes not your typical striker) so if that's sorted out and i think Rodgers is the perfect coach for something like this, he'll do well, just dont expect much from the first season. Hope that helps

Oh wow thanks for the explanation and for the sticky 🙂

By the way, i forgot to mention that Luis Alberto was playing as a false 9 with Deulofeu on the left and that worked by having Alberto drop deep, go on the wings, make runs into the box, so it required Deulofeu to be cutting in from the left and this is when he looked the most comfortable. I didn't know if Rodgers was a big fan of this formation when he got Borini, i assumed that Borini was going to be the striker and Suarez on the wing cutting in but he put Borini on the left and let Suarez be a sort of false 9, he wasn't exactly a striker like Benteke for example (Michu also transformed from an attacking mid to a false 9 as the season continued, he was never really a "striker"). So Rodgers seems to like the false 9 system and this could be great for Alberto. So if Suarez leaves, and Rodgers doesn't sign a striker like Benteke
(however, it's rumored that Rodgers wants Benteke) then theres a good chance Liver play with a system that would suit Alberto. But Aspas also signed and he was playing as a striker for Celta last season but again he's not your typical striker, he got a lot of assists last season so im expecting an extremely fluid front 3 from Rodgers if Suarez leaves.

An absolute waste of talent in my opinion, Cristiano has the left wing which leaves the attacking mid or right wing spot. He'd be wasted on the right wing, and for him to play attacking mid means that Ozil, Kaka, and Modric would all be benched (unless you think Modric will play instead of or with Alonso but i have doubts about that) which is doubtful. Isco Aguero Navas Silva, now that would've been nice to see.....

It's hard to gauge the conversation when you are not face to face with a girl. Unless the chat is obvious that she wants a piece.

Don't be too nice to them. They complain about guys treating them like shit but they don't seem to like guys who are too nice either. They are mental.

IF RvW comes in at 6.5 I probably won't buy him. Not planning to spend more than 6.0 on my 3rd striker. I;d only stretch to 6.5 if I could afford it, and then, I'd bench him for tough away games.

That was because FPL had cocked up the start date. So while they worked on the rest of the game they released a few a day on Facebook or Twitter.

Last few have been around 16th-20th. Maybe get it a week earlier with luck.

  25. Clean sheet analysis
    Absinthe 42

I've been taking a look at the last 10 years of clean sheet data.

Primarily I wondered, are clean sheets declining and how do promoted sides compare to established ones?

I'm curious if cut price defenders from promoted teams are worth the investment, especially the strategy of rotating them to play home games before the Jan WC.

    DECLINE
There has been a definite trend to less clean sheets over the period.
These are the raw numbers from oldest to most recent.

    224
    219
    244
    233
    218
    246
    221
    191
    206
    200

As soon as we apply a four year average to the figures, it becomes more noticeable and the effect is recent as we all have felt.

    230
    228.5
    235.25
    229.5
    219
    216
    204.5

So it looks as if we are about 10% down over the length of the period in question. Who knows if it is a trend that will hold though.

    PROMOTED TEAMS
How do promoted teams fare in their first season?

I compared the number of clean sheets to the median for the league.
Is a team doing better or worse than an average team?

Of the 30 promoted teams, 6 managed to be on or above the median.

    CS vs Median CS
    Reading 2006/7: 13 vs 12
    Stoke 2008/9: 11 vs 11
    Birmingham 2009/10: 11 vs 11
    Newcastle 2010/11: 9 vs 9
    Swansea 2011/12: 14 vs 11
    West Ham 2012/13: 11 vs 10

    HOME GAMES
I then took a look at whether promoted teams get significantly more CS at home than away.

Indeed they do, 140 of 225 CS came at home.
    That's 62%

    FAST STARTERS
It's been mentioned that promoted teams are more likely to get their CS early in the season. Due to having momentum, a cautious set of tactics, the surprise element etc.

    But this doesn't hold up.

Only 116 of 225 CS came in the first half of the season.

    EARLY HOME
But since the CS come more at home, then perhaps it's still a good tactic to have a promoted defender or two before the Jan WC.

65 of the 225 CS come in this period, which is 29% a slight amount above the 25% you'd expect if there was no trend.

Disappointingly, only 4 of the 30 teams managed to supply 4 or more CS during this period.

    LATE COMERS
So surprisingly the promoted teams are actually doing better at home in the second half of the season.

74 of the 225 CS come at home from GW20 onwards, which is almost 33%. That's quite a significant stat.

    AWAY DAYS
Just to be sure I looked at away games in the first half of the season.

They supplied 46 of 225 CS, which is 20%. So there is no credence to hoping that they go away and play for a 0-0 and succeed.

    CONCLUSION
Just putting promoted defenders in your initial squad doesn't seem to be a route to success.
But there are some teams who buck the poor trends.
Can these teams be found before the season or only once we are underway?

I think for me, this will prevent me bothering with a promoted player unless they have considerable attacking appeal.

Bringing in a promoted player in the Jan WC, from a team that looks to have founds its way in the league might be a sensible thing to do.

I think I'll be rotating players from more established teams. I might look into ways of predicting those in the near future. Once my brain cools down from this afternoon's effort.

Superb analysis. You should re-post outside of the DZ, perhaps.

One stat that I found particularly interesting was that of the 6 promoted teams registering clean sheets at or above the median for the season, there has been one in each of the last 5 seasons (Stoke, Birmingham, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham). I'm trying to think whether they have anything in common. With the exception of Birmingham, they have all stayed in the PL, and have enjoyed a fair amount of success beyond their clean sheets. I had not followed the PL too closely until last season, so I have nothing more insightful, I'm afraid.

Without any further analysis, I would argue that of this year's promoted teams, Cardiff looks best positioned for success for in the Premier League. Whether that necessarily translates to clean sheets is another matter. But I would not be afraid to snap up a Cardiff defender, at least after their early run of difficult fixtures.

Thanks again for the crunching the numbers!

The thing in common seems to be:

        1. A team that retains the ball way above the average (Swansea
        2. An old fashioned manager who plans around clean sheets (Birmingham, West Ham, Newcastle, Stoke).

With this years promoted clubs we have:

        Cardiff - Young manager, inexperienced.
Hull - Experienced but unspectacular manager. Not really known for planning around defense.
        Palace - Maverick attacking manager.

I'd be prepared to guess none of them are worth investing in for CS.

Its fair to say that come halfway through the season it will be easy to judge the defensive potential for teams and whether they have started to improve. For me this analysis is particularly useful when selecting a team from GW1.

Took a quick look at two other sets of clubs.

      1. The three that just avoided relegation the previous season.
      2. The three above them, 12th-14th.

Over the ten seasons the promoted clubs had 225 CS.
The three that just avoided relegation had 268 CS.
The three finishing 12-14 had 297 CS.

Using Promoted clubs as the baseline that means:
      100%
      119%
      132%

Of these new teams, 24 of the 60 ended up in the top half of the CS table the following season.
So 40% of them really turned it around.

Perhaps teams that just get out of a relegation scrap are more prepared to invest in a better defence the following season?

If that happens next season, then we can expect two or three of these teams to be doing well for CS.

        NEW
        AVL
        SOT

So with those teams in mind (+ Maybe exceptions such as SWA, WBA and WHU) we can start making conclusions for any new data such as prices:

12-14th expected to improve if the current managers stay, which are FUL and SOT. STO unpredictable at the moment.

15-17th last year: AVL also expecting to improve, especially since Villa have retained most of their squad and added a left back (Luna).

So pair AVL, FUL and SOT with 2 of WBA, SWA or WHU and you might have a decent 5 man backline there...

You can't afford to miss out on players who are gonna shoot up in price early on in the season....There are some 4.0-4.5 defenders who always do well at the start, and you just can't wait till Jan to do that.

Great post Absinthe. I have spent an age over the last couple of years looking at forecasting clean sheet success. I've done a similar and fairly well related analysis on my blog, comparing attacking and defensive strengths of teams in their promoted year compared to first year in the Prem, over the lsat 7 seasons.

Conclusion is none of this year's promoted clubs had a standout defensive record relative to other promoted clubs. Only Cardiff's home record of 15 GA is of note and compares similarly with the performance of Newcastle and Swansea in their promotion seasons and indeed prior to them both exceeding expectations in the first season of FPL. Here's the link if that's allowed: http://blog.insidefpl.com/2013/07/prospects-of-promoted-clubs.html

Absinthe makes the stats grow longer.

Good effort Absinthe, some interesting bits of info there.

A couple of points to perhaps be considered amongst this,

1 Trying to get players from the established teams to rotate, who have their places almost assured. Will almost certainly cost an extra £1mil or so above the usually cheaper promoted team's players.
This might cost anything between £5 and £10 mil more, thus restricting your budget for the BIG hitters.

2 Leaving promoted team's players until the Jan WC. Those worth having, will no longer be the bargain prices they were early in the season (I give you Michu).

The stats themselves (I just read them again) are very interesting and I'm sure there is a lot we can take from your post to give us all an extra angle to consider and hopefully profit from.

    Thanks for your work Absinthe.

      RE: Your #2.
I'd never advocate not picking up an attacking player, this is purely based on defence.

Spending more on the initial defence rather than winging it with promoted defenders doesn't necessarily cost more.

By that I mean the extra points & reduced maintenance via transfers, could outweigh the initial cost of a 0.5m extra for some of the defenders.

Thats the thing, great analysis though it is.

Does spending say £1.5m extra on 3 slightly better defenders and downgrading an attacking player as a result really translate into more points.

Par example, as they say in France: Say I wanted to get 2 x £4m defs and 1 x £4.5m def but then read your article and decided to get 2 x £4.5m defs and 1 x £5m def. With the new prices I now realize that I do not have enough money to buy Hazard or Mata as well as Bale.

So, I have to buy Oscar instead.

Will the 3 defenders I upgraded to score more points than the cheap defenders I jettisoned out to balance out the difference between what Haz/Mat will score over Oscar?

Ultimately, when price is a serious consideration, the fact is that the extra £1.5/£2m spent on defence has to come from somewhere........

Not necessarily - you are right. However, this is a crap example - as Oscar WILL score more points! 😀

Exactly, in some cases it might be worth getting the ubers at 4m and pick up the 0's, 1's and dare I say the -1's(Fabio....gw 1...last season) if it gives you the additional captain's choice somewhere else in your team.

And face it I doubt any team will go through a season with zero cs's. Wigan/Qpr went down with 5 or 6 CS's last season I think.

Great analysis nevertheless(rather you then me!).

Bottom line for me is - I'm getting the uber's the "balance the books". Any CS's will just be a bonus.

      Probably not.

      Last season:

      Jussi/Federici/Davis = all 4.5m

I dreamt recently that I made a transfer without realising it was still last season, that it cost me 4 points and that my overall rank dropped as a result.

That would give him an ideal defense.
