Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – Swansea and Cardiff

Today, we roll out the sixth in our series of rotation articles for the season ahead. So far, we’ve analysed the prospects of pairing West Ham/Southampton, Norwich/Stoke, Crystal Palace/Hull, Newcastle/Sunderland and Aston Villa/West Brom. We wing our way to Wales this time round to asses what’s on offer by combining Cardiff and Swansea.

The Fixtures

Once again, our featured duo offer an alternating home/away partnership right across the entire 38 Gameweeks. The fixture list, however, is firmly against the idea of kicking off the season with this combination – Cardiff entertain City, Everton, Spurs, United and Arsenal by Gameweek 13, while Swansea welcome United, Liverpool and Arsenal to the Liberty in their first three home games; a schedule that looks anything but conducive to clean sheets.

From Gameweek 7 until Gameweek 19, however, the Welsh duo face just three tricky home games between them and offer up a run of 10 favourable fixtures out of 13 (NEW, SUN, WHM, SWA, STO, NEW, HUL, WBA, SOT, SUN), with the only issues being in Gameweek 12, 13 and 17, with home clashes against United, Arsenal and Everton. For those eyeing up a three-way defender rotation, Newcastle hand us an alternative not only across those three matches (NOR, WBA, cpl) but also have a kind opening schedule which, combined with the best on offer from Swansea and Cardiff would give you (whm, WHM, FUL, hul, HUL, ful) over the first six Gameweeks.

In the second half of the campaign, while a Cardiff/Swansea rotation partnership would allow you 14 favourable home fixtures from 19, Malky Mackay’s side work even better with Sunderland. Pairing the Bluebirds and Black Cats would hand Fantasy managers 16 obliging fixtures in front of their own fans over the remaining 19 Gameweeks – a tactic to consider when wielding a winter wildcards, perhaps.

Defence

Cardiff
The Championship winners’ exploits last term certainly bode well for those looking to invest in their main defensive assets. Mackay’s side racked up 18 clean sheets (10 at home and eight on the road), suggesting they could offer a decent option in the budget bracket .

David Marshall is nailed-on between the sticks and should accumulate plenty save points if his side do concede – the former Glasgow Celtic man has the potential to be one of the best value keepers over the coming season, with a 4.5 price tag expected in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Elsewhere at the back, Andrew Taylor provided five assists from left-back, while Matthew Connolly (five goals) and skipper Mark Hudson (four goals, three assists) offered some decent attacking returns last term – the latter is hoping to recover from ankle surgery which forced him out towards the end of the title-winning campaign.

Swansea
Over at the Liberty, a drop in price for Michel Vorm looks on the cards. The Dutchman was slapped with a 5.5 price tag in FPL last term after earning 158 points in his debut season but with injuries limiting him to 26 starts, Vorm will surely slip to 5.0, bearing in mind the Swans’ number of clean sheets also dropped from 14 to 10 after Brendan Rodgers was replaced by Michael Laudrup. Angel Rangel looks the stand-out option from defence – very occasionally utilised on the right of the attacking midfield three, the Spaniard’s three goals and an assist, while enough to see him finish higher than any defensive option for the Welsh club last year, is unlikely to earn him a price rise from 5.0.

At left-back, Ben Davies’ prospects have been hit hard by Neil Taylor’s return from injury – the pair could alternate from one game to the next and thus negate one another’s Fantasy potential. Ideally, then, a move away for Ashley Williams could promote new boy Jordi Amat as a possible budget option, though Williams’ exit may well dent the Swans’ overall defensive appeal.

Attacking Options

Cardiff
Looking at the statistics from 2012/13, Peter Whittingham (eight goals, seven assists) and Craig Noone (seven goals, eight assists) will turn heads but neither looks a guaranteed starter under Mackay. Whittingham failed to score after October and relied on game time off the bench towards the end of the season, while Noone suffered from his manager’s penchant for rotation out wide on too many occasions.

Aron Gunnarson, with eight goals and five assists, looks to be more of an assured pick in a deeper, central midfield role, while Bo Kyung-Kim became more influential as the campaign unfolded and is expected to be a pivotal figure in the middle of the park. Both are expected to cost around the 5.0 to 5.5 mark and could offer us a viable midfield option, though Blackpool’s Tom Ince could be the one to watch if Mackay manages to secure his signature.

Elsewhere, Craig Bellamy’s potential is dented by the 4-5-1 – the Welshman is fielded out wide in his manager’s favoured system and, if classified as a forward, will be a reverse out of position prospect. New centre-forward Andreas Cornelius has the target man qualities which should ensure he will spearhead the Bluebirds’ attack, with Bellamy or Fraizer Campbell partnering the big Dane if Mackay opts for a front two.

Swansea
Having produced 18 goals and 190 FPL points in his first season in the English top-flight, Michu will no doubt be targeted by many a Fantasy manager next time out. The Spaniard will be subject to a significant price hike, though – a jump from last term’s 6.5 to around the 8.5 mark would be no real surprise, given his advanced role in “the hole” and occasional stint up front; bearing in mind he netted in only four fixtures from Gameweek 19 onwards, many may overlook him initially in light of his opening few fixtures.

With Europa League duties also to consider now, rotation on the flanks looks an even greater risk – Laudrup could once again alternate Nathan Dyer, Wayne Routledge and Pablo Hernandez, thus reducing their chances of consistent starts. Given that the Swans are intent on sealing a deal for Vitesse Arnhem forward Wilfried Bony, Jonathan de Guzman’s chances of occasionally been fielded in “the hole”, with Michu up top, look reduced – the Dutchman was second only to Michu for the Swans last time out and with a share of set-pieces and corners (and spot-kicks, at present) in his locker, may be worth considering if he remains around the 6.0 mark.

With Jose Canas already on board, Laudrup bolstered his options further yesterday by picking up Alejandro Pozuelo from Real Betis and is also in the market of Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey. Given the number of options available, then, rest and rotation could be a real issue for many of the Swans’ mid-price midfield protagonists – while Michu’s price could be an issue, he looks like one of the few to offer us guaranteed game time under Laudrup next time out.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic.

What is the key information you hope the pre-season friendlies will provide for you as you set up your fantasy football team?

How can you be sure if a top performer in pre-season friendlies will also do well when the season kicks off? What other factors do you consider?

Many fantasy managers have been caught out by the likes of Boselli and Graham in the past, but an equal number of also been able to discover the likes of Hazard and Michu through pre-season form.

I may pay less attention to it his year after Graham last year. 🙂 I'd like to know if Azpili is nailed on as he may be the cheapest option at the back for Chelsea.

The Chelsea line ups are a key piece of information I hope to glean. Want to see how nailed on Mata. Hazard and Oscar are likely to be. Also whether they get a new striker and how they fit in.

And yes, the defence is key. We just don't know who he favours at the moment.

I'll certainly be wary of budget striker form though. Pre season will be all about line ups for me.

"I'll certainly be wary of budget striker form though."

This is the reason why we often fall for pre-season goalscorers that turn into season flops like Graham last season and Boselli the season before that, it´s because we tend to go for a budget forward and feel attracted for one with a good pre-season.

Those examples you gave tell us that it´s tough to guess unless the quality has been shown before like in Michu and Hazard´s case.

I usually look for players that have prove they´re consistent before, and those who get a good percentage of starts in pre-season.

That's exactly why I asked it. Each year we all get caught out by Boselli or Graham. It takes experience to treat pre season friendlies how you are.

RVW is another I'll be looking at. He has the good track record already...he just needs to give us that extra nudge....if he can't score in friendlies then it may make me avoid.

I will be very careful assessing RvW since I´ve seen him play for the past 2 seasons, if he gets the right support he might come good, although I think he is bound to do fine with a quality ball supplier like Snodgrass.

Snodgrass is another player that could have a great season. He had very good attacking and distribution stats last season...just no one getting on the end of them...bit like Jarvis at West Ham.

I think the information gleaned on defences is more reliable - managers are more likely to try to get a defence to gel, less chance for data to be skewed by anomalous performances a la Boselli.

So I'll be looking out for who the likes of Mourinho and Pellegrini are bedding in to their back lines.

I fell for the Moses pre-season two years ago. I actually captained him one of his first games too. All friendlies being relative, I feel they are always a time for a manager to tweak and for players to show what they have. Sometimes friendlies only show us what players can do, but not what they are allowed to do once the league starts. Michu is an exception though.

Pre season is an opportunity to simply determine who is likely nailed on for GW1. Graham was actually a good shout last year. Pre season determined that he should be nailed on and he was given an opportunity to produce. That is all you can ask for.

Depends on the price. Hernandez is a better fantasy option as gets forward more, but De Guzman has penalties - although Swansea didn't get any in the Prem as I recall (may have got one - happy to be corrected).

Realistically 5.5m is the most I'd pay for two middling mids in a mid table team.

    Lamps: Pens
    Mata: FKs & Corners, Hole
    Hazard: Some corners
    Oscar: Nout

Getting Mata and Lampard would be 'playing the odds', getting either Hazard or Oscar would be going 'with your gut'. IMO

Wilshire - injury prone, Cazorla more attack minded, Arteta - yes, but when he's injured they are short. Ramsey patchy, Diaby (really!) and Rosicky - injury prone.

there have been many times last season when many are injured and his centre and defensive midfield as looked very short. I'm not saying Wilshire and Cazorla are not good...its just Cazorla is better suited playing in an attacking midfield role and Wilshire is great but injury prone.

Spurs based ramble on rumours, tactics and FPL impact - might be a long post.

Paulinho's signed, Villa I expect to come, Bale I expect to stay. I think those are the 3 key things looking forward to our season next year.

    Tactically I expect a shift to 4-3-3
    Lloris
    Walker Kaboul* Vertonghen BAE**
    Paulinho Sandro Dembele
    Lennon Villa Bale

*Rumours of long-term knee problem so may not start the season - keep an eye on Dawson if so
** Think AVB would like a new LB but not sure who - Rose could start in BAE's place with a shift to 4-3-3 the width Rose would give may be appreciated but I wouldn't bet on anything there.

In the middle I'd see Sandro largely sitting with Dembele and Paulinho pressing and creating. Expect Paulinho to chip in with a few goals and the odd assist but not likely to be worth owning on FPL except possibly in a DGW.

I also expect to see much more rotation this season with the squad being smaller but more efficiently used. May well be that Any 2 of Sandro/Dembele/Paulinho is then complimented by one of Sigurdsson or Holtby or a shift to 4-2-3-1 and Bale in the hole.

Expect Huddlestone, Parker and Livermore to go - Paulinho and Carroll in their place.

One of Adebayor and Defoe to leave but unsure which - I'd put my money on Defoe because he could be more realistically sold to a PL team for a bit of cash. There's talk of a move for Soldado/Benteke in addition to Villa but I have my doubts over that financially being viable. If that did occur I think you could see Bale inverted on the right big man in the middle and Villa on the left but again squad game would see Lennon get plenty of minutes still.

I'd hope that we can keep a few more cleansheets this season too although that may be dependent on Kaboul's knee and signing a LB (or Rose being very good). Statistically we were always conceding more goals than chances/shots conceded suggested we should do.

FPLwise: get Bale, possibly consider Benteke/Soldado if that does come to fruition (again don't think it will), monitor Villa to see how he settles (if he signs). The left-back slot could be a bargain if somebody settles into it as unless we sign a big name (we won't) that slot will likely be 5.5.

    Any questions/disagreements?

I really think you guys should be looking a little higher than Villa. He's out of practice and not as sharp as in his 20's. 32 this year and there are plenty of players in their prime Spurs can afford.

Possibly and I think we are but if you look at that squad there's very little experience in it - now Gallas has gone nobody has really won anything big time so Villa offers that too. Also can play 2 positions or in a 4-4-2 with Ade if he stays and won't be too dear.

Defensively Spurs interests me. Vertonghen especially. Your defensive stats last year were among the best in the league but you didn't keep many clean sheets. did you watch them? Could you put your finger on why?

Also, could you see Vertonghen at left back?

Club stats article I wrote the other month showing Spurs defensive qualities

Early season - Walker's brain farts, later season Dawson/Vertonghen/Lloris individual errors and poor defending at set-pieces.

I don't see Vertonghen at LB long-term - it's not his optimal position and he doesn't like it. However he'll play there vs. West Ham and Stoke which is 4 fixtures with decent enough cleansheet odds.

So basically Bale seems to be the only likely nailed on FPL prospect, with everybody else a rotation risk. You've also go Sig and Dempsey to squeeze into this mix too...... Good times to be a spurs fan, but tricky from a FPL prospect. That fair comment?

      Great post Scroobius!

Do you think Bale is a viable prospect in the hole in a 4-3-3, or just a 4-2-3-1?

Any thoughts on Villa getting fielded out wide, as he was at times at Barca, or is that a waste of his talents?

I've probably spent more time analysing things in the past few weeks than all of last season put together.

Sadly I've yet to find any correlation between total minutes spent per GW and GW ranking, minutes spent/season and overall ranking, percentage free time spent and overall ranking, number of children under 5 in the household vs ranking, or perhaps most surprisingly, time spent getting nagged by the other half vs ranking 😉

        Bit harsh Gimli.

I would have thought Roberts and BOD would have been ideal mix of brains and brawn with Tuilagi on the bench to come on if they needed more brawn. I do like davies but he has been in chronic form and doesn't have the same nous or experience as BOD. What is Sexton supposed to do with those two planks running beside him?

Murray shouldn't even be in the squad imo he is so slow getting the ball away its criminal.

Ps this is an Irish perspective though.

for FF team I can take risk with Azpil.
But for Chelsea team, Ivan is slight better at RB, same as he play for Serbia.
He play as CB at Chelsea sometimes and not working for him, never seen him play CB in Serbia tbh.

Monreal is an interesting one. I think he's better than Gibbs, hell, i think he's better than Jordi Alba, but, Gibbs is an Arsenal boy, impossible to tell who will start the season as 1st choice. Both will get games though.

Monreal is a better defender. Wenger prefers Gibbs at home as he's more attacking.

Monreal is also great going forward. From an FPL point of view, unless one is injured, probably best to avoid both.

Monreal better than Alba? I think as an all round LB, he is. Not impressed at all by Albas defensive quality.

To steal AB's argument that's about the same as saying Hibbert > Baines or indeed say 2 years ago when both were at their peak Sagna > Alves. Alba is a much, much better player. Comparable to his attacking ability he's not that great of a defender because he's a converted left-winger and because he doesn't need to. But look at his overall contribution to play and he's unbelievably good.

Yeah im not saying he's rubbish or anything like that, i just think that if Spain play with only Busquets anchoring, they'll be better off playing Monreal. However, if they play Martinez and Busquets, then Alba should be 1st choice.

Pre-season frendlies can be such a poisoned chalice. Swaying you towards a player banging in the goals against fitness fodder that never turn into FPL points.

My mantra this year is to try and fit a starting 11 of proven PL players in my squad, with a subs bench Home Bargains would be envious of, and then see how the start of the season pans out.

Pre-season is just for sorting out formations and nailed on players from each team.

*Cue RvW hattrick away to Fleetwood and I'm all over it!* 😉
