Scout Report – Allan McGregor

Steve Bruce moved to solve Hull City’s goalkeeping dilemma earlier this week with the acquisition of Allan McGregor from Turkish side Besiktas on a three-year deal. The 31-year-old makes his way to the KC Stadium for an undisclosed fee and his arrival continues the recent spending spree which has also brought Curtis Davies and Ahmed Elmohamady to the club:

With last season’s number one David Stockdale now back at parent club Fulham, Bruce has been desperately scouring the market for a first-choice stopper. Although the Tigers have been linked with the likes of Kaspar Schmeichel and former Wigan man Chris Kirkland during the summer, McGregor admitted to the club’s official website that he’s been aware of a possible move for a number of weeks now:

“I got a call a while ago about the interest from Hull City and things progressed from there. Holidays stalled things a little bit, as they do at this time of year, but everything is done now and I’m just really happy to be here. I kept an eye on what was going on back here while I was playing in Turkey and I actually watched the last few minutes of Hull City’s game against Cardiff on the final day of the season – it was exciting. I’ve had a few chats with the manager here and I really had belief and confidence in what he was saying about the club. The chance to play in the Premier League is also a massive thing and I can’t wait to get started here.”

The History

A product of the Glasgow Rangers youth academy, McGregor’s career began back in 2001-02 with a couple of appearances for the first-team at the age of 20. He failed to play a single minute of the following treble-winning season and after featuring four times during 2003-04, spent a couple of years on loan at St Johnstone and Dunfermline. By 2006-07, however, he was installed as number one at Ibrox and picked up the Players Player of the Year Award as a result of his displays between the sticks under Paul Le Guen.

McGregor played 196 times over six seasons as the ‘Gers first-choice keeper, winning 11 major honours over his time at the Govan club, before making his way to Besiktas last summer after Ally McCoist’s side were relegated to the Scottish Third Division. Over a single season in Turkey he produced five clean sheets in 26 matches (his replacement managed three clean sheets in eight matches by comparison) and helped his side to a third place finish before Bruce clinched his signature earlier this week.

On the international stage, McGregor has turned out for Scotland Under 21s on six occasions and has also received 29 caps for the senior side. Although his heroics between the sticks have been crucial to Scotland at times, his overall number of appearances would surely be greater if he hadn’t been banned for over a year due to alcohol-related “multiple breaches of squad discipline” back in April 2009.

The Prospects

McGregor certainly seems guaranteed starts for the season ahead and as a first-choice stopper for one of the three promoted teams, can be expected to be priced in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games. Given that each of last term’s main promoted keepers came in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a similar price for the Scot looks on the cards, then.

Looking at their defensive displays in the Championship in 2012/13, the Tigers registered 16 clean sheets last term (10 at home, six away), though questions remain over whether Bruce’s 3-5-2 system may be picked apart in the top-flight. While plenty of saves are expected, McGregor’s Fantasy potential could also be determined by Ahmed Elmohamady’s classification in the Fantasy games – the Egyptian produced three goals and nine assists from a right wing-back role and, if listed as a defender, will surely offer us the most appealing route into Bruce’s backline.

For those eyeing up the Hull keeper as a possible rotation option, the opening schedule has certainly been kind to the promoted club. Their first six home games welcome Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace to the KC in a run that takes us up to Gameweek 12 – as mentioned in a previous article, Hull and Palace alternate home/away across the entire season, though for those looking for a short-term fix, West Brom, Norwich and West Ham offer up a strong goalkeeper combination over the opening six fixtures of the season.

He was pretty good last year from the little I saw, injured for the last 6-8 games.

I haven't got any stats Ryan. I reckon the 4.7 in Sky is worth a punt if he's fit for the start.
Hopefully he'll get a sub game or two before the off.

Majority of points to towards goals and assists in both games. Prices will be relatively similar.

Take the top 20 most expensive in the Sky game. I'd bet that 15 of them are the top 20 in the FPL game.

Bale 8.9, 9 players higher in value including Torres.
In FPL Bale is likely to be the 2nd highest in value. Players like Ba, Sturridge & Benteke are also valued higher.

Not sure if they factor the scoring system into the prices so much.

Sky is 11 players for 75m. That's just under 7m per player.

                      FPL is 15 for 100m. That's 6.666m per player.

                      No Sky players over 10m.

                        Sky = no subs.

As far as I remember. Last year about 90% of prices were very similar.
5% quite different and 5% a lot different.

This held true across the games. Different players in each of course as the various firms had a few varying opinions.
Still mainly very close in prices.

        Super cheap defence.

Marshall cause Cardiff most resilient of the promoted sides.

        Antonio Luna, new Villa fullback.

        Jack Hobbs, Hull centreback.

Damien Delaney, CP centreback, and vice captain

Definitely. I seem to recall the non-Sky players asking if there was even a budget when we posted RMTs last year.

Defenders are a bit steeper, and there are no obvious bargain strikers. Bellamy at 7.3, Bent at 7.5 if he gets a move. Carroll at 8.1 is probably the cheapest viable pick.

As I posted last page. I have the perfect team and don't need to look again until GW5, Other than for injuries or bans.

    Morning everyone

I’ve enjoyed this summer without world cup or euros, there I said it 🙂
Not much lurking here and it was really nice to watch those confederation cup matches without fantasy football stress! And somehow that made me think about this 😳

I’ve played fpl for 5 years now and it’s been something like this:
First year, learning, learning, learning (captain choices, hits, knee jerks etc)
Season 2 and 3 was just great, watched a lot of football and fantasy football gave huge boost for matches like Portsmouth – Blackburn etc.
Season 4 and it all started to feel bit too much work, continuous tinkering about fixtures, rotations etc – that extra fun was beginning to ruin the real game for me.

Then came last season…and the low point (?).
Few years ago fantasy gave nice bonus for tv matches, now I don’t want to watch football because of this fantasy aspect! I didn’t want to see how my “coin toss” decision once again went wrong and how my rival will eventually get that god damn Maloney from his bench because there was some surprise omission in his squad.
I think after january I watched only handful of games and made my fantasy decision based on what I read here.
Actually worked okayish, but it really wasn’t fun anymore and surely that 9 months stress/anger/anger management wasn’t worth that 50 euros price money that I managed to get in my mini league!

Now I just have to decide whether to join fpl next season or not?
Month ago I was very much leaning towards possible year off (at least semi seriously), but now thanks to this world cup / euro free summer, I think it’s time to get back to “business” in three weeks time 🙂

Have anyone actually taken year off to charge batteries or have you just managed to keep game fun for yourself, even after playing it for many years? If so, how did you do that??
Please don’t tell me that I am the only one (actually me + Adolf!) who can have his weekend ruined because of this little game?
I really love pre-season tinkering and that , but bit “worried” that after season starts, it all will feel like work again..

If you need to recharge your batteries after playing you should give it up imo... It's a game. If it ruins your weekend or drains you mentally then you should stop now. Of course you won't, so why ask? 😉

I think I've heard rumours that someone have actually managed to do it, taken a year off.
If this will be proven correct here today, we can all ruin our weekends knowing it can be done - next year 😉

I've been playing for more then 5 years, and I've never seen anyone on here that could prove that they took a whole year off by not having a FPL history for a specific season. Most play and when they do bad they have some sort of an excuse the next season about them not "actually" playing.

          Good luck in quitting.

yeah that gut thing is difficult - I bet it can't always be right, but then again it might be easier to suffer losses if it was "a gut decision". Or you might just feel stupid for not captaining Bale/Rvp etc.

Not overthinking + believing more in my own gut (+ not worrying too much for prices) , are actually something I try to improve next season.
        If I play fpl 😉

Obviously I don't just play FPL because of football, it's also very addictive and rewarding when you do well, but not watching football would take half of the fun away for me.

      Also know how you feel.

I think that the trick is just to relax and try not to get too invested in it. If something goes badly; so what? its only a game, don't let your skill at FPL validate your life.

Ultimately its a stupid game that relies hugely on luck and things that you have absolutely no control of. So if it goes well; be happy, and if not just shrug and get on with the gardening.

I was about to post something along these lines. But then I thought Id just piggyback on Bedknobs excellent words. 🙂 I deliberately take the off season literally and take the time off. Easy to get burn out, high level intensity hard to maintain!

Applying that same ethos to the game itself will pay huge dividends. A balance between caring and caring too much about the outcome. Knowing that luck plays an enormous part in the game can set you free, and ultimately be a good thing 🙂

This should be in the FPL rulebook (I've modified it a bit):

When you have a competitive ML season and you have taken the game seriously(too seriously) with lots of effort put in, then there can be an element of fatigue by the end. This is exasperated by the result. If things go against you and you end up losing ( Like me) then fatigue will feel worse. There is nothing like success or a victory to help you overcome that fatigue.

For me, taking the summer off is enough. I was delighted to hear the final whistle of 2012/2013 season. Now I'm nearly ready to enter that breach once again. By the time the game is launched I hope to be fully recharged.

It's a great game, just try to remember that it is ultimately A GAME

I'm so jealous of you for thinking of that as a hot topic before I did. 🙂 Great post.

Have I thought of a year off? No way. Even if I do badly I still enjoy it. Also helps that I have no Prem League club affiliation, so being a fantasy player doesn't hinder my enjoyment of the game. If anything makes me appreciate the game a bit more.

Yep I hear you completely. For one I think it is essential for everyone's sanity to restrict their FPL to the regular season only. A summer off is a great opportunity to recharge and start afresh. In fact the euro's last summer put me off FFS last year because I wasn't at all interested in it. This year I've chosen to be involved in FFS over the summer because it is more relaxed without having to stress about any FPL team.

I think you found your answer yourself this year. I don't play summer games and take few months off each year and come refreshed and ready for August madness. It helped me when I got bored after tough seasons.

Also, agree with guys who already talked about overthinking. Just play the game how you enjoy it. Though, I think the charm of this game is exactly that pressure and overthinking that we often find hard to bear.

Nice post, i was in a "fantasy football depression" at the end of this season as i was drifting from the top of my mini league with 6 straight red arrows, although at the end i got some ground back and was challenging for the title on the last day. Lost it, and i must say, i was just happy it was all over so i can recharge my batteries over the summer with some non-fantasy time.

Then euro u21 came along and i couldn't let my crew down ( as i am the commissioner ) so i made a league and did decent - was in the top 25 in the world until i slept through my transfer deadline. 🙁

Then i shut down on football for a few weeks to get some rest - but shortly i started getting hyped up for the new season, checking the site daily and thinking of potential fantasy teams and differential picks.

I'ts gonna be my 3rd season now (first one started GW10 though), so i hope to improve on my ~8k rank from this year and win my H2H ML (like i did the first year) and... finish above Forca in the Croatian national league.

If you want less stress, try to take a simple, conservative approach where you go for simple strategies where you have to make less difficult decisions (e.g. try not to take many hits)

I plan to play this year a lot more laid-back. I've proven to myself that I can get a very good rank if I put enough time into it but now I want to enjoy it a bit more. Last season got stressful at times!

I've just given it a hot topic Snowman - a lovely post - will be interesting to get more views on "Fantasy Fatigue" - I make a point of avoiding the Champions League and peripheral games for that very reason - not sure if I'd stay fresh for the season otherwise. Anyway...this is for discussion in your topic above.

I've played fpl, cl and of course world cup and euros.
Champions league might definetely be one to leave out, because it requires that "line up watch" before you can make transfers + bit more work to get info for players.

I'd say Bale and Hazard are going to be hugely popular - the man of the match awards really add to their appeal - big points earners. I'd also say a reliable heavy hitter at the back is worthwhile - I guess City cover is best here given their fixtures - so Kompany or Hart, although we need to assess how save points will benefit budget keepers who may well be great value as a result of the new bonus points.

Position by position guides in the works.

Defo the best team but the best team doesn't have 10 welshmen in it unfortunately. If Warburton wasn't injured, priestland was fit and bowe's hand had not recovered gat would have picked 13 welshmen.

Gray should have started one of the tests, the youngs brothers should be starting again. Warburton should not have got near a test team, heaslip should be no8, dricco should be playing instead if Davies who has been the wrong side of average all tour (easily the weakest centre option, croft v unlucky not to get no6 as well as one or two of the scots back row fwds being ul not to be at least in the squad.

Worst thing is this was the lions best chance to win a series in years as the aussies are the weakest of the tri nations sides and were crippled with injuries.

Yeah im thinking itll be 9.5 which is pretty damn good. Hes a great shot stopper and very commanding. He has CL experience too so wont be phased. I was at the Old Firm game when he save an 80 min pen for us to (pretty much) win the league. Never forget that.

    Hey guys!

    How's this for a GW1 team?

    Hart/Cheapie
    Clyne Mert Turner/Santon O'Brien Coleman
    Bale Carz Nolan Cheapie Cheapie
    Rvp Aguero Cheapie

All in all, calculated that it should be under the 100mil mark. (assuming the cheapies are 4.5 and below)
Any thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Unbalanced in terms of the weak midfield? Feel that Rvp and Aguero will be main attacking threats (given that tevez is gone and Rooney is out of favor) IMHO worth sacrificing one premium mid for

A couple. Bjorn needs to finish 1-5.

Poulter for a win @ 28/1...he dropped 5 shots in last 3 holes yest. lol
llonen to win @ 50/1...he dropped 6 shots over last 6 holes yest...lol..would have been the leader.

I'm not as talented as Forca.

    Morning all,

I see we have a hot topic trying to destroy the merits of even considering a Uber 😯

    Can I say one thing;

How about a BALANCE argument please.

I think people have presumed that the most important thing when picking an Uber is the price. It isn't. It is the same for if you are picking a defender at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 million, How nailed on is that player? If an Uber is available with nailed on players then there is relatively no more risk to your transfers than there is to picking any player as any player can become injured.

Just a quick reminder that the Uber I have put forward to the community, isn't full of 4 mil players.

    The RMT would look like;

    5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4

A quick look at the minutes played proves my point further with 5 players starting price at 5 or below and 5 players, 5 or above.

    Top ten defender by minutes played;

    Baines
    Shawcross
    Williams
    Lowton
    Ollson
    McCauley
    Johnson
    Walker
    Jagieka
    Huth

(FYI, Is it the same 5,5 split for the next 20)

The other thing to point out about the claim of 14 transfers, the Uber is designed to get you to the Jan WC(19GWs) where you can then load up of the Big Hitters at the back as this is when statistically the big clubs have an increase in CS. It also has a designed two transfer points where of course you can break the Uber and convert it to a 2+2+1 or even a 2+3 but you don't even have to wait till then as you can break the Uber whenever you want the same way as any other defender combination. To think you are locked in an Uber trying to fix injury after injury is ridiculous.

If we want to flip the argument on to the traditional defender formats, how many big hitters failed to deliver in the first half of the season?

    Baines?
    Kompany?
    Terry?
    Cole?
    Vidic?
    Lescott?
    Clichy?
    Richards?
    Vermaelen?
    BAE?
    Vertonghen?

The only three I can remember that did consistently hoover the points up for their price was Rafael, Ivan and Zaba. The three that were quoted as the Uber breakers. There is an argument that even Zaba hoovered more points up in the second half of the season.

Now even though it is coming across that I am hell bent of owning an Uber, I will be the first to play a 2+3 at the back if the budget can stretch to it. a Baines/Vertonghen/ Three way is my preference. I have shown enough three ways on these boards to prove that statement. What I don't like is a long winded post with no evidence or stat based theories trying to destroy a perfectly good option for the community. The winner last played an Uber 🙂

    Cheers 🙂

Yep. What people are forgetting is a decline in clean sheets doesn't necessary mean a 20 club decline in clean sheets. there are always exceptions to the rules. What we should all be looking for or trying to predict is the clubs that will break rule for the best cs/value. If that's Baines in a United shirt, then I will be the first to jump all over it

Isn't it called über because it's short for über-cheap? or have I misunderstood?

      If your backline is 5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4, then by definition that's not über-cheap.

22.5 is Uber imo. It is all relative to any other defender combination. A three way on those prices would cost you a minimum of 2.5 mil more. A 2+2 is at least 1 mil and this is if you are happy with the 6 mil market which tends to be full of unknowns (Cahill, Clichy, etc)

In that case I think it's a misnomer to call it über-cheap, which to my mind means as cheap as you can get. But actually, you just mean 'cheap', not 'über-cheap'.

I think this may be the cause of some confusion about your strategy as people might be assuming from the name that you mean a backline priced at 4.0 across the board.

Perfect example - Ryan below referring to 'übers' in the context of an individual defender. Are you really saying a defender priced at 5.0 can be defined as über? To my mind a 5.0 defender is decidedly mid-priced.

a 5 mil player on his own isn't but as a collective 22.5 mil defence? I would call that an Uber. If we want to call it something else, I'm really not that bothered 🙂

OK, so a defender who isn't an über can be part of an über-defence.

Is it just me that sees the room for confusion here? I guess that's my main point - you should be bothered about what you call it, because people can get confused about what you actually mean.

But that's the whole beauty of this game, in the end of day it all comes down to opinion. What I would classify an Uber might not be what you classify an Uber. Let people decide on that. I haven't written the definition of what is an Uber at any point.

Surely we all need to be clear in our minds what you actually mean by über? how else are we supposed to weigh up the relative merits of the strategy if we're not sure what you mean by that term?

Otherwise you'll just end up talking at cross-purposes with people who have a different idea of what an über-defence is.

Sorry if this comes across as me having a go at you, it's really not my intention as I think it's an interesting idea, just one which could do with a little clarity over what you actually mean.

                      No problems the3rdturd.

for me an Uber is a defence that would typically be anything between 1-x million cheaper than a conventional defence allowing you to invest more in attacking players which at the moment there seems to be an abundance of. If that is wrong, it is wrong.

Is Uber not relative to other options out their?

One season 21.5 mil is Uber, the next 23 could be Uber depending on FPL tower pricing.

If i'm wrong, I'm wrong but for me that's when I use the term Uber

Great post...dunno if you read my reply yesterday but i'll go again. I notice you concentrate on rotating defenders within what i assume is a set 3-4-3 formation (usually the best)...but how do things change if you consider rotating a defender (uber in your case) with a cheap mid...and in effect rotating formations....So for example...If Cardiff prove to be realatively prosperous on goals scored at home and Swansea prove tight on goals conceded at home then a rotation of formation is possible with an Uber defender and a cheap mid.

I've always thought defender/mid could be the best rotation. Would often fit into the fixtures better too.

Well posted Wakey. How about tripling up cheap def/mid/striker? Frees up your potential formations.

lol, a bit of a rant 😉 Last season I started with a lot of ubers, too many in fact. I found that injuries, losses of form and rotation hampered their effectiveness. At the end of the day, the majority of ubers are fairly rubbish options. Sometimes it takes a while to identify the real deal ubers from the pretenders. This is an argument of logic, rather than precise statistics which are subject to change, especially when there are new managers and new players at a club.

Tommy I like your theory but the one thing thats hard to do without hindsight is to pick the right teams for your uber.

Last season most would have had newcastle and qpr with possibly reading in their ubers and would likely have fallen behind due to their poor performances.

The one thing the one big def does is give you a vhance at ptedicting returns with a little more consistency imo.

As I say though I do like your theory.

True, but the same could be said of Utd or Spurs defenders. there's also the added complication this year that we just don't know what the backlines of City, Chelsea and Utd will be due to the new managers. I don't know if going for 5 cheap defenders will work, but given that uncertainty and the extreemly kind fixtures for a number of clubs, I think this season is the perfect time to give it a whirl.

We don't know what the defenders in these teams will do but we know the teams will end up with 16+ cs at the end of the year whereas we didn't know qpr and toon would be so shat last year. I wont be going uber but I will be trying to get the best value defenders out there in a 1 big plus four cheap as possible to rotate I reckon (made easier by the fact I have decided to forego rvp)

It's also harder if you've got a defence solely of 4.5s with the 'wrong teams' to sort it out - it would take many more transfers than if you have one big hitter to downgrade in there too.

I'm thinking of going 5, 5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0, so there should be enough leeway in there to swap things around.

I think that's very important to have leeway in your opening squad in all positions. You don't want to back yourself into a corner where you HAVE to WC in GW2 or 3 because you've gambled on a strategy that suddenly looks dreadful.

        Bzzzz.

You would not have had those teams in an uber if you'd have had my research at that time.

Meanwhile for the record, I have always thought of the uber simply as a defence where you have nobody guaranteed of their place, everyone rotates. Now whether you spend 20m or 22.5m is up to you.

On the subject of nijuries and getting dropped, I agree that you don't want to relie on such an intricate web of rotation that if you loose one player you're screwed. For this reason you should really try to have 4 defenders with playable fixtures if at all possible.

Having said this, if you do have an expensive defender and he gets injured, the results can be so much worse as you've now lost the player who's supposed to play week in week out. The big teams are also (arguably) more likely to rest and rotate defenders, increasing the risk to your defence.

This is an important point which most people seem to miss - yes, some posts are made hot topics pretty much straight away to draw attention and generate debate but many also happen more organically based upon the volume and quality of the replies.

The entire thread is the hot topic, the original post is just the seed from which it grows.

      More great stuff Tommy.

One thing that gives me pause about the minute disquisitions on cheapie rotation we've had the benefit of in recent weeks is that, unless I'm mistaken, it's all based on data from one (last) season. The more minute and statistical the method gets, the more tempting it becomes to confer "objectivity" on the resulting induction, but if we're only applying that method to one year's data I think we need to be correspondingly wary about using it to establish maxims.

        Morning Stilicho,

completely agree about minutes played. I didn't want to go publishing a huge amount of member stats so got them from the FPL site 😉 They'll be there for people to look though

Any rotation I find is using a calculated number based on the league tables stats for the previous 2 seasons with an applied relevance to each season.

I see a lot of talk about Ubers round these parts. Most recently the suggestion of rotating a combination of strikers/mids for starting position. Ive done this before, most recently in the run in last season, although in that case it was just for the final starting berth.

The interesting part of this to me is actually the implied combining funds pool for attacking and mid and applying rotation. Something bothers me though – why not extend this to the whole team? A pot for players who form your starting spine from week to week, and a pot for the ‘rotaters’ who are selected on the basis of fixture? This seems a logical extension to me. (and indeed is likely close to how many of us traditionally select our starting squads)

I don’t think it invalidates the idea of an Uber anywhere, but as mentioned elsewhere (Professor?) I would be a little concerned about becoming locked in to any Uber, and possibly being unable to jump on the necessary bandwagons which form a large part of FPL. (could be lack of suitable price point players to dump for the incoming bandwagon player, which would cost points to correct – flexibility is an important part of the game at the start particularly)

The again, flexibility is more of a moot point if you are an advocate of an early wild card (which I am – whole other debate :D) In which case you can afford to take more risks in your early selections, safe in the knowledge the wildcard can/will bail you out!

Of course, all this is possibly just the ill thought out ramblings of a mad man on a Friday morning with little else to do. 🙂

The rotation between positions is interesting, but I think that there's a risk of serious frustration if you pick the wrong attacker. I find it much more theraputic to just have a reliable bench player and a set attacking 7.

If you rotate across the squad, you're implying that you might play 4 at the back some weeks.......

The idea of squad rotation may be a tough one to argue though. Surely nobody in their right mind would want to start more than 3 defenders? in which case a mid/striker rotation is about the extent of which a whole squad rotation gets.
