Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

Wouldn't want him past GW1 though.

I think with the flexibilty of being able to build your team round your DGW plan then you should find a better option for one of the Chelsea slots IMO.

Which players in the last few years have had a great pre-season and gone on to have a great start in the actual campaign? It seems that pre-season is often a bit of a false flag. I still have nightmares about the magnificent Mauro Boselli

After captaining Ivanovic for the Week 1 DGW last season I feel bad not having him in my team once again for this one but I feel a little to unsure over his game time in the second match. How does this look?

    Mignolet
    Luiz (c) / Terry (vc) / Collins
    Cazorla / Hazard / Silva / Jarvis
    Negredo / Sturridge / Giroud

    4.0 GK / Thomas / Turner / Chester

Luiz (c) is probably going to end in tears , Jarvis could be a great pick but his potential might be blunted if Carrol is injured, Not sure why you have gone Caz over Walcott price aside Walcott outscored him with 1000 less mins, Terry might be good in short term not long term, No Bale is a massive error in judgement

You really don't have a consistent captaincy option eg Van Persie or Bale who will score regularly against the bad teams Sturridge will score very well infrequently against the bad teams but he lacks consistency.

Howver, I'm going to take the guy who's banging in 20 goals a season over the guy who played for Sporting Lisbon - a club that's gone off the rails during the time he was there, but none of the big clubs in the league wanted him.

But on a more serious note, excluding the top 7 teams within the league Norwich have one of the best / better defensive records that puts them on par with Swansea and close to Everton and Liverpool.
The one thing they were seriously lacking was quality upfront, they only scored 41 goals all season which isn't a lot when you consider Fulham, Southampton, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Wigan, Reading scored more than them, yet still managed to finish below them, and in the case of Wigan and Reading, got relegated.
Once Norwich finish that final piece of the puzzle you should start seeing a real quality team emerging and challenging for a high place.

Thoughts on my team? I honestly think it has a great balance and I have managed to fit in RVP and Bale in as well, after a lot of tinkering this is what I came up with.

    Boruc

    Mertesacker, Luiz, Clyne

    Bale, Hazard, Snodgrass, Nolan

    Rodriguez, RVP, Kone

Bench: Jakupovic, Collins, Colback and Baker

What are your thoughts on the forwards in particular? I could shuffle things around a bit and try get Anelka and Lukaku but do you think Lukaku will be a regular starter this year?

I got Anelka over Lukaku to give me some extra $$$. I am not getting RVP or Bale, cost too much lol, and for the dollars between them I can get decent players. I think you should sell either one and use that extra dollars on a better defender or bench.

This is my current line up.

DEF - Baines, Jagielka, Bassong (Baker, Garrido)

He is by some people, those who thought he'd get a big club move.

He's clearly a good finisher with his goalscoring record but he's unproven at the top level, this is his chance to show he's good enough.

We'll have to see how each performs, looks like rotation will damage both as FPL prospects though.

    RMT please

    Mignolet (boruc)

    Nastasic Cole Clyne (baker) (mcnaughton)

    silva hazard bale paulinho (koren)

    kone rvw sturridge

I know Paulinho is a bit of a risk but his goalscoring record in previous years, and also for brazil has impressed me...hopefully that can translate to the premiership.

I'll be swapping rvw for bent if bent makes a transfer to fulham, and may potentially swap coutinho for silva

    Merte / Nasty / Ivan or Luiz (2 x 4.0)

    Wally / Haz / Mirallas / Kags (4.5)

    Lukaku / Benteke / Sturridge

Will downgrade Che Defender after GW2 to 4.5 and upgrade Benteke or Lukaku to City attacker (Kun being possible)

Not nailed down on Kags and Mirallas (would love to see Kags explode this season, though)
Sturridge would be long term prospect, not sure about first the game, so not nailed down either.

So with the opening DGW, it's likely that we'll have to field some of our 4.5 / 5.0 players in Gameweek 3.

Those going with 4 DGW outfielders will have choice of 11 outfield players, if both free transfers are used. Possible less than 11 if one of your picks is injured, or starts the season out of favour.

This puts me off Hull players like Chester and Quinn (and I was never on him, but Koren) as they play Man City away.

Also puts me off punts such as Ravel Morrison or Alex Pozuelo, both priced at 4.5. If they're not starting, they're pretty useless that week.

What budget players are in your team? Do you think they're pretty safe for GW3?

If Cech is one of your doublers you get more leeway. But yes we are going to have to use our bench players, makes getting every slot right all the more important. I was on Quinn but general DGW restructuring has forced him out - looks like I'm going with 5 mids now. Mainly because I don't trust the Chelsea striker options enough.

The world has gone mad I say! Mad. So many posts on here declaring and justifying the almost instant use of a precious WC. With managers spending countless hours getting all their preparations fine tuned, to then opt for such a pointless and potentially costly move is mindblowing.
A DGW concering 2 teams, one of whose immediate appeal is limited in terms of fixtures. Chelsea have 3 games prior to their blank, with the potential to carry over transfers or god forbid take a hit, it's pretty straight foward to reconstruct things. Minus 4 or 8 and keep my WC is a no brainer. I've even seen one reply to a RMT post telling him to WC. Really dodgy advice to be handing out imo.

I achieved a massive team value last season and didn't use WC until after Jan. Chelsea's line up is far from clear, to load up with defenders is very risky also, Hull and Villa will have a real go, very likely to no avail, however they only need to score one to damage defensive returns.

A major problem with planning 4 or 8 points to sort out your Chelsea players is that there's no room for sorting out your other poor picks in the opening squad. Missed this year's Michu? That's another 4 points. Pressure's on to get the rest of the squad right...

But if you need to transfer players out anyway for Week 3, why not just get this year's Michu in place of Chelsea players/Benteke?

Nevermind, I understand what you're saying. You've got this year's Boselli as well as the Chelsea players.

You don't have to get them all GW2 though. No such things as must haves after one gameweek anyway, 2-3 transfers if you decide to go that route should be sufficient.

As Baby above alludes to with Boselli, already planning to use too many transfers on DGW is risky if you've also got players in your squad who subsequently prove to be bench warmers or not the superstar you thought they were. Agree that it's not good to plan for a WC early on, but 12 pointers aren't great either. Saying that, if there's a good time to play a big point hit it's GW2 to get on the rising values.

The voice of reason! Personally I'll be waiting until at least GW4 before I panic and waste mine.

    FINALLY, Fitted around for Bale.

This is my current line up.

    GK - Mignolet (McGregor)
DEF - Clyne, Jagielka, Bassong (Baker, Garrido)
MID - Bale(C), Hazard, Walcott, Couthino, Snodgrass
    FWD - Bony, Kone, (Anelka)

    Thanks.

Also: Anyone getting Fellaini? Worth it?

Fellaini is not worth it because he will not be playng at a number 10 , You might want to get one expensive forward eg Aguero for flexibility purposes , Coleman instead of Jags

What's the word on Cabral? I have Wanyama in at the moment, but I'm hearing good things and might save myself the 0.5. Any 4.5 who isn't thomas and will play is good enough for me!

2 goals in 96 games for Basel. Not sure how good that is.

for a 4.5 bench fodder all you want is someone that plays every week

I've heard he's nailed on, taking up CM along side Larsson. He's my cheap mid.

I like Morrison and Johnson as differentials , Collins is 4.5 instead of Rat, double Liverpool seems excessive ditch Kolo and get Clyne
