Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Tuesday

Papiss Cisse helps fire Newcastle to victory in his first appearance of the summer. Cardiff fall to defeat at Brentford, though Kim Bo-Kyung impresses with a goal and assist, Chris Hughton admits Seb Bassong may struggle to make the start of the season after undergoing minor surgery over the summer, Roberto Martinez discusses tactics, while Michael Kightly and Brek Shea grab a goal apiece as Stoke finish their US tour with a win:

St Mirren 0 Newcastle 2
Alan Pardew named a strong starting line-up for the trip to Paisley. The Magpies moved to a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa partnering Fabricio Coloccini at centre-half, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Sammy Ameobi were handed the flank roles as Papiss Cisse made his first appearance of the summer after resolving his dispute with the club. The Senegal striker needed just 19 minutes to make his mark, firing home thanks to an Ameobi assist before Mathieu Debuchy notched the second before the half-hour mark, with Vernun Anita supplying the final pass. Both Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye were given the night off as Pardew rang the changes as the second period progressed, making eight alterations in total as he continues to utilise the depth of his squad in order to boost match-fitness.

After the game, Pardew revealed he’s expecting progress to be made over the next few days as the club step up their search for a new forward. The Magpies have been linked with Darren Bent, Loic Remy and Bafetimbi Gomis over the past few weeks but, as yet, no deals have come to fruition – a situation their manager reckons will be resolved as he looks to rectify his side’s meagre 45-goal haul in the previous campaign:

“I’m hoping something happens before the Rangers friendly. I think that’s a realistic deadline for my team in the background to hopefully get something done. All I would say is that we’re keeping our options open regarding strikers because we can only do a deal that’s right. If a deal’s right we’ll do it, if a deal’s not right we won’t do it. You can only be as confident as the feeling that you’re getting and the feeling I’m getting at the moment is we’re pursuing and at the end of the day we’ll get something.”

Brentford 3 Cardiff 2
The Bluebirds fell to their first defeat in three pre-season matches yesterday evening. Worryingly for Cardiff, Malky Mackay fielded what many feel will be his first-choice back-four next term, with John Brayford making his first start at right-back alongside Ben Turner, Mark Hudson and Andrew Taylor, though Brayford and Taylor were amongst several second-half changes late on. Further up the pitch, Mackay omitted new boy Andreas Cornelius from the squad and handed Fraizer Campbell the lone striker role, with Craig Bellamy and Craig Noone on the flanks. Once again, though, it was Kim Bo-Kyung who was the Welsh outfit’s main man – the midfielder scored for the second successive match and also provided the assist for Campbell to fire the visitors two in front before Brentford clinched victory with an impressive comeback.

After the match, the Cardiff boss admitted he was keen to bring more new additions to the squad, though refused to confirm reports linking him with a loan move for Steven Caulker. The Tottenham man’s potential arrival may raise question marks over the starting roles of Turner and Hudson, with the former perhaps the likeliest to make way should the deal transpire:

“The group we have are at the fitness level we expect them to be at, so that’s important. but at the same time I still need to add two or three players. We’ve got various plates spinning. We’re working hard on it but they’ve got to come in and add to this group. We’re looking at good players to come in and we’re trying to improve in all areas.”

Brighton 1 Norwich 1
The Canaries recovered from back-to-back 1-0 losses to register a draw at the Amex Stadium last night. Chris Hughton handed new boys such as Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and Leroy Fer starting roles, while Nathan Redmond was selected in the first XI for the fourth match in a row. Redmond supplied the assist for Jonny Howson’s goal in a game that saw Gary Hooper make his Norwich debut after climbing off the bench to replace Fer with half an hour remaining.

Hughton – who made six second-half changes – was without many of his first-choice players for the clash, though, as Seb Bassong, Michael Turner, Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington all missed out. After the game, the Canaries boss explained the quartet’s absence and admitted Bassong may struggle to make the season opener against Everton, though refuted the recent speculation linking Snodgrass with a move to West Ham:

““It is very, very simple and I can set the record straight. It is a family issue. If he (Snodgrass) is not with us at Cambridge United then definitely at Braga. Any speculation is wide of the mark. It is a personal family issue and we look forward to seeing him again later this week….We’re hoping that Michael will play some part on Friday (against Braga). He is closer than Seb. Seb is maybe a week or two behind him. It is going to be very, very tight whether he makes the start of the season or not. We’re disappointed that we haven’t had them for the bulk of pre-season. Seb and Michael both had small operations in the summer and they are a little bit behind the rest. Pilks has got a slight knee problem but he will be fine. He has missed this game and he will probably miss Friday as well.”

Philadelphia Union 0 Stoke 2

Mark Hughes shuffled his pack and made seven changes for the final match of Stoke’s US tour. At the back, the Potters boss handed Marc Muniesa and Ryan Shotton the full-back roles and gave Thomas Sorensen a rare start in goal, while further up the pitch Michael Kightly and Brek Shea patrolled the flanks, with Marc Wilson afforded a start in central midfield as Cameron Jerome led the line in a 4-5-1. The two wingers played a pivotal part in the victory, grabbing a goal apiece, while Kightly also supplied the assist for Shea’s strike in a comfortable win. Hughes made a number of alterations after the break and introduced Peter Crouch and Kenwyne Jones as he moved to a 4-4-2 but the visitors were unable to find the net again.

Stoke suffered an injury blow midway through the game after Shea was forced off following a rash challenge and according to his manager, the US international looks likely to miss the start of the new campaign. A livid Hughes spoke to the club’s official website as he awaits a clearer prognosis:

“It’s incredibly frustrating and hugely disappointing to lose Brek, especially in a game like this where you would expect players to look after their fellow professionals. I really have no idea what the lad was thinking about by going in for the challenge like that. Maybe he was trying to make a name for himself, I have no idea, but whatever he was thinking it was totally wrong. We have been waiting a while to get Brek back here, and up until the injury he looked very bright, very dangerous and appeared to have a real understanding of what his role was on the left hand side of midfield. He will go for a scan tomorrow, but we know that we will definitely be without him for a number of weeks. It looks fairly serious, but fingers crossed it isn’t anymore serious than we already know it is.”

In Other News
Roberto Martinez took time out to discuss his tactical plans for the season ahead the other day. The new Everton boss has mainly utilised a 4-3-3 formation since arriving on Merseyside but reports in the local press indicate he trialled a three-man backline midway through the weekend win at Blackburn, with a defence comprised of Sylvain Distin, Johnny Heitinga and John Stones allowing the Toffees to move to the 3-4-3 shape Martinez preferred at former club Wigan.

The Spaniard admitted post-match that due to the numerous options available in his first-team squad, he’s unlikely to stick to just one set formation for the campaign ahead – a suggestion that we cannot be guaranteed the likes of Seamus Coleman will be fielded as an out of position midfielder every weekend:

“I don’t want to be a team that can only play in one way and to do that you need to experiment and try things in pre-season. This is about making ourselves a bit more expansive in terms of how we play and that is going to be a real strength for us. I want the players to be flexible and take on many different systems. You can see that certain players are suited to certain systems and I think it is about picking the right time and moment to use those players in those systems.”

Martinez also rolled out an update on Antolin Alcaraz, after the Paraguayan was omitted from Everton’s US tour due to a hamstring injury. The Toffees boss expects the defender to be back in training prior to the start of the season, with the problem deemed not too serious:

“Antolin will be out for a couple of weeks, I wouldn’t expect any more than that. It was more beneficial for him to work at Finch Farm so we can make sure we get him fully fit as soon as we can.”

Manuel Pellegrini has admitted Matija Nastasic requires further tests on the ankle injury sustained against Sunderland in Hong Kong last week. City were expected to find out the full prognosis of the central defender’s problem earlier this week after he was stretchered off in the 1-0 win over the Black Cats but with the situation still unclear, the Chilean was a little downbeat in his assessment:

“We will have to wait to find out how serious the injury to Nastasic is. At this moment, we don’t know whether he needs an operation or if there is another solution but I have a lot of players that I can rely on. There are enough players who can come in to replace any that are missing.”

While the news could promote the likes of Joleon Lescott or Micah Richards as a potential partner for Vincent Kompany, a length of absence may force Pellegrini into the transfer market again. Reports in Italy suggest the agent of Cagliari’s Davide Astori is already in talks with the Etihad club, while the new City boss may renew his interest in Real Madrid’s Pepe, having been linked with the Portuguese player all summer.

I'm starting to get worried about chelsea defender situation. I feel like my decision is between:

      A) Luiz & Mirallas
      B) Coleman & Oscar

My major reservation is that a defender who plays both ought to be on for 8-12 points plus goal/assist as a bonus whereas Oscar could play well in both and only come away with 5-6 points.

Dzeko will be 4th choice striker, he can't get that many games.

If Nani secures himself in the side early on, he could be a bargain. More likely he'll be in and out of the side all season like the rest of the Man U midfielders.

New managers always talk up players otherwise seemingly on the fringe. I read nothing in to Pele's comments about Dzeko other than he's staying at Citeh and will get some starts, some off-bench game time.

I expect same as last season, not enough starts to pick him, but scoring just well enough when he does to leave FPL players day-dreaming 'if-only's'... 🙂

Coutinho would be the better bet. He's on a pretty good run of form. Aspas will probably get a lot of game time now at the beginning of the season since Suarez is still suspended and Sturridge is still recovering from an injury

I think that's a good line up. Good Chelsea coverage if Az plays both, rotating the 4th mid I see. I think you should stick with Cout over silva. I think he will rack up more points and has less competition in his squad for the starting spot. I have Cout and aspas. Kone would be another option to aspas if you don't want to double up

In general I think he is, he can play CB or RB so that helps his cause. Good chance he'll contribute to the goal tally too. Azi will be flying with Spain too so is likely to only play 1 of the 2 DGW fixtures IMO.

Ok so we all have to wait and see who moves... Bale especially. If he stays I can see why many would favour him in the squad over RVP as it frees up 2 million to strengthen elsewhere. Plus the CS points and tge extra point for each goal.

I've been looking at a squad without Bale...excluding RVP also you can get such a nice team together but I think it would be a bit suicidal. I'd rather have RVP and if he doesn't perform as expected you can easily swap him out and have some money to play with.

I expect bale to go. In light of this here's my team. Not sure about the defenders I've gone for and the somewhat lightweight midfield.

    Marshall

    Touré, Coleman, Dawson
    Coutinho, Wallcott, Hazard, Hernandez
    Lukaku, RVP, Aspas

    Boruc, Koren, Chester, Par

The RMT tool predicts 312 points in 1st 6 GW's if I sub as it advises, which isnt too bad... I would probably look to sell Lukaku GW2 for a bony, Kone ...whoever is doing well. Wouldn't fancy benching him and Haz for GW3

Please share your thoughts and advice, Thanks.

I wouldn't do double Chelsea defence myself, feels too conservative. Do we know for sure that Szczesny won't fall out of favour again? And I don't believe in Anelka. But that's just personal taste; aside from that it's a great team.

Not sure how much Aspas is going to play. can't see him starting every game.

And not sold on Anelka and his gametime either, maybe downgrade Mirallas and use the funds for improving them.

Also the Bale issue, if he stays you'll want him.

Surely he'll be first choice? Even more so with Suarez unavailable and Sturridge injured/massively short of fitness?

Anelka's a punt I know but one I was willing to take before preseason and he hasn't disappointed with a good few goals either. He's their highest wage earner, he's not going to be sitting on the bench.

With Cahill, Luiz and Terry all battling for two spots it seems likely that only ONE of them will play twice. There seems to be a good argument for each one, with Luiz's international match adding more fuel to fire. There is also a case for Ivanovic but many believe Apzil is a better RB and is likely to start against Villa so there is risk there also.

Whilst each player comes with decent attacking threat, I'm starting to think Cole is the only sensible option for so early in the season. Should we really be taking such risks before the season has even begun?

my feeling is that Luiz and Terry will play the first game and Luiz and Cahill will play the 2nd

Very possible. Also another thing to include in your decision is goal threat. Terry had by far the better goals per minute last season than any (Chelsea) defender, probably right up there if you compare him to all defenders considering he had 4 goals in 14 apps.

That said, I got Cole. Safety first.

I was foolishly replying in general to what I read as a general comment at the end. But you didn't mean it as a general point, you meant it in the specific context of your chelsea defender question.

To your specific question: as always, it's about balancing risk and reward. Cole provides safety of starts but not much attacking threat (these days). Luiz and Ivan are less likely to start two games but could more than make up for that with a goal. And if one of them starts both AND scores then it's a big whammy.

Is anyone else giving consideration to Cech for the first gamesweek? Nailed on defensive cover for the double, and I seem to remember Mourinhos first Chelsea team being basically impossible to score against at home.

I'm becoming increasingly tempted to punt on Terry. Mad? If we say Ivan is basically a right back, his competition is Luiz (can play in midfield) and Cahill. Obviously he's not going to be secure all season, but I can't see Mou messing with the centre backs after the first game, and Terry is still his boy. Has a huge upside and goal threat for cheaper than Ivan, who himself is not nailed on.

    Coutinho's league apps/goals stats:

    Years Team Apps Gls
    2009–2010 Vasco da Gama 19 (1)
    2010–2013 Internazionale 28 (3)
    2012 → Espanyol (loan) 16 (5)
    2013– Liverpool 13 (3)

    Total -
    Apps (76)
    Goals (12)

Following these status I would suggest that Coutinho will score roughly 5 goals and 15 assists. (70 points)

Gerrard, on the other hand, I will predict he will score around 10 goals and 10 assists. (80 points)

Also, the new BAPS system will more likely favour Gerrard because of his defensive work, passes etc.

    Have I convinced anyone? 😉

Probably a bit unfair to include his days from Vasco and early Inter days since he's pretty much a youth back then.

The trend is that he scores 'every' 3-4 games. So this season's projection is prob 10 goals, and regarding assist, he got better potential than Gerrard definitely.

So more or less similar goal potential and more assists, I would go for Cou.

That just seems superflous analysis to me. How does Coutinho get 5 goals, when he had 3 in 13 last season. Surely this is going to be near 9-10 if anything, due to him being more accustomed to the league and pretty nailed on. How do you have Gerrard at 10. Can't see him reaching that unless Liverpool get a fair few pens

At 16 coutinho was regarded as the best player in the world at his age. His potential looked unfulfilled until he came to Liverpool. I don't think anyone can deny how good he was last season. The only stats I'm interested in are from that point onwards.

Interesting, but Gerrard's gametime is more difficult to quantify as he is more injury prone and susceptable to the odd 'rest'. Coutinho meanwhile looks nailed on to start every game. I rate him highly, 9m is a reasonable valuation in my humble opinion (people should ignore his value last season). Easy decision for me...

      Great post lukas.

I think some of your conclusions are a bit off but I do see gerro outscoring coutinho due to having pens and with his cm birth I think gerro will do very well under the new bps system.

Addressing some of the replies re gerro:

      A) he is not in decline as last year he scored the most fpl points since 08/09 season
      B) he is not more injury prone since he played more epl minutes last year than in any of the last 7 years

I do expect coutinho to do well but I also expect rotation for him with sterling and others as competition and I think he will be targetted for some special marking now he has shown what he can do. Gerro to outscore coutinho provided he plays as many minutes as last year imo

Good illustration of what you can pull together without either of those two!

As you say, all goes wrong if Bale stays. If he does then scrap that nice defence and get Gareth in.

Quick straw poll (FFS should have a feature where they so a couple of these daily....)

If Bale is still at Spurs for GW1 who intends leaving him out of their team in case he is 'rested' and then gets sold in late August or in case he has been affected by all this transfer malarkey.

Interesting point you raise, I think I'll keep him he could easily score away to Palace, I'll be surprised if Madrid don't snap it up by then anyhow

i might as there are other captain options for GW1 - but in all likelihood i'll chicken out and have him if he stays.

Turner has most chance of points but least of playing. Parr the opposite. Chester somewhere in the middle. Really, they're all pretty crap.

Yeah, Carlo was quite informative. Expect Mourinho to be the opposite, planting spurious hints in pressers that will annoy no end. 😉
