Scout Scribbles – Coloccini Doubt for Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini is an early concern for Newcastle with a muscle problem. Christian Benteke has returned to training but will be rested by Belgium, Andros Townsend is a slight doubt for England duties, Jozy Altidore is confident of ending his Sunderland goal drought and Anthony Pilkington withdraws from the Republic of Ireland squad:

Coloccini Worry for Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini has given Alan Pardew cause for concern ahead of Newcastle’s home game with Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime. The Magpies skipper has been forced out of Argentina’s match with Uruguay later tonight due to a muscle injury and faces a race against time to be passed fit for the weekend showdown.

The Scout Says: Given that his side are set to face the red-hot partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, Pardew will be desperate for his skipper to recover in time. The Newcastle boss has clearly been unimpressed by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and subbed off the Frenchman for Mike Williamson in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton – Steven Taylor is believed to be edging closer to a comeback though it remains uncertain whether he’ll make it in time, handing the Tyneside team a real headache and perhaps boosting the armband prospects of both Suarez and Sturridge, given that Newcastle shipped three against Hull in their last match at St James’ Park.

Benteke Rested Out by Belgium

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has confirmed he won’t involve Christian Benteke for tonight’s clash against Wales. With his country having qualified for next year’s World Cup in Brazil after beating Croatia last Friday, Wilmots has ruled out the Villa forward and is expected to continue with Romelu Lukaku up top again.

“He trained for the first time in three weeks with the group on Friday but I won’t risk him.”

The Scout Says: Certainly, Benteke’s prospects of a quick domestic comeback have been boosted by a return to training for the national team. While Paul Lambert has yet to comment or assess his star forward, there’s no doubt a fully-fit Benteke would be immediately reinstalled to the Villa XI – all the more so after the midlanders’ failure to find the net away to Hull last time around. Home games against Spurs and Everton are far from straightforward but given that he’s already scored against Arsenal and Chelsea this season, Benteke – now down to 8.8 in FPL – has shown he’s more than capable of breaching any backline.

Pilkington Concern for Canaries

The Norwich midfielder has withdrawn from Republic of Ireland’s match against Kazakhstan this evening. Pilkington, an unused sub in his nation’s defeat in Germany last Friday, has been allowed to return to Carrow Road for treatment on an unspecified injury.

The Scout Says: Chris Hughton will be sweating on Pilkington’s fitness after a couple of impressive displays. Handed his first start of the season against Stoke in Gameweek 6 due to a injury to Nathan Redmond, the left winger supplied the assist for Jonny Howson’s winner at the Britannia and kept his place in spite of Redmond’s return to fitness last time round. Pilkington’s consolation strike in the 3-1 home defeat by Chelsea was one of the only positives for Hughton’s side and with 15 FPL points over his last couple of appearances, he could be a real differential to consider providing he proves his fitness, with games against Cardiff, West Ham, Newcastle and Palace in the next six.

Vydra Boost for Baggies

The West Brom on-loan forward has insisted he is ready to make his mark after a hamstring injury curtailed his early-season game time. Vydra has managed just 30 minutes in the league over the opening seven Gameweeks but has revealed he is finally free of injury:

“Now I feel in perfect shape. The leg doesn’t hurt and I’m ready. I played 60 minutes for the reserve team against Reading and even scored. Then another 45 minutes for the first team versus a youth side from Derby County. Everything was fine. I have been in training with the first team for quite some while already and endure the full burden without any problems.”

The Scout Says: Unfortunately for the Czech international, the influx of new arrivals has led to a change in formation which is likely to limit his first-team options. The introduction of Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano has seen Steve Clarke switch to the 4-2-3-1 system of last season, with the former sitting in “the hole” behind a lone forward – with the likes of Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe and Shane Long all vying for the central berth, Vydra may have to rely on appearances off the bench unless Clarke decides to switch system. Given that the Baggies have taken seven points from nine since Sessegnon and Amalfitano arrived, any alterations seem highly unlikely right now.

Altidore Confident Despite Drought

Sunderland’s summer signing revealed he is still full of self-belief in spite of a frustrating start to his career on Wearside.

“Any player is a product of the environment. If we’re playing good attacking football, you’re always going to have opportunities to score goals. I don’t change my mentality or the way I play. I feel like I’m playing well at Sunderland. We just have some bad luck right now, but I feel like I’m playing well and doing things right….If we can just focus on building a good team and try to leave the rest of the stuff out, it will be good for us. Hopefully the new manager can help us do that.”

The Scout Says: Yet to score in six league appearances, Altidore’s only strike for the Black Cats has come courtesy of the Capital One Cup against MK Dons. The big forward returned to scoring form for the US national team against Jamaica at the weekend, however, and with Steven Fletcher still stuck in the treatment room with a dislocated shoulder, Altidore will be tasked with grabbing the goals under new boss Gus Poyet as Sunderland ready themselves for a schedule which hands them a home derby with Newcastle and a trip to Hull in the next three Gameweeks.

Townsend Worry for England

Roy Hodgson has revealed Andros Townsend requires a fitness check ahead of England’s game with Poland tonight after the wide man picked up a problem in last week’s win over Montenegro.

“Andros took a slight knock on Friday so we will have to monitor that but we are hopeful he will be okay for Tuesday.”

The Scout Says: In spite of his showing for England last Friday, Townsend has been far from impressive domestically. While Hodgson’s prognosis suggests the winger is likely to be available, his first-team place at the Lane is coming under increasing threat with Aaron Lennon pushing for a return to fitness and Erik Lamela also in contention after a spate of sub appearances. Granted, his confidence will be sky-high after his goal against Montenegro but with just a single assist to his name over six league starts for Tottenham, there’d be no real surprise if Townsend made way over the next few weeks as Villas-Boas looks to rectify a run which has harvested just six goals in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Surprised with your evaluation of Townsend domestically. Was poor initially but has been improving greatly over the last few weeks. Still overdoes the long shot, but I would be very surprised to see him dropped any time soon.

I may ignore Lukaku this week for Terry as captain. Guaranteed 90 mins against Cardiff whereas Lukaku (my initial choice) could play 180 mins for Belguim after tonight.

Rooney against a strong SOU defence would worry me... and Utd aren't firing yet either.

I know... could be crazy but with rest/rotation hanging over the top sides after the INternationals, he's a guaranteed starter, against Cardiff, and has BPS and goal threat appeal.

Lukaku would be my first choice, so will see if he plays tonight.

        Yep, line up is currently;

        Vorm
        Kos Vidic Vert Terry
        Ramsey Michu Moses OR Eriksen
        Giroud Sturridge Lukaku

Moses or Eriksen needs to bench, loathed to bench Ramsey at home to Norwich. Originally was all for Moses on bench, but then leant towards Eriksen.... Only thing swinging me other way again is that Eriksen plays on Sunday and so it gives an additional reason to watch match..... Anyway, hopefully the internationals will take care of my selection choice and someone will get injured

    a) Amalfitano (5.1)
    b) Barkley (5.5)
    c) Townsend (5.5)

    With b) and c) I CAN'T afford Mirallas -> Walcott next week.

How much would you be short of doing Mirallas -> Walcott next week if you brought in Barkley? Bare in mind that Barkley's probably going to rise another 0.2 by then, so if you're only 0.1 short, then you'll probably be fine, I reckon.

Hmmm. Sunderland have conceded 14 goals in their last 5 games. Swansea looked very good against Southampton even though they lost, created a host of chances and were unlucky not to score.
Very tempted by Michu this week. May well be the game that really gets his bandwagon rolling....

I think that Michu will be good at the weekend also ..... but not necessarily because its Sunderland.

I think we will see a better Sunderland than the 14 goals conceded in their last 5 games now post Di Canio. - they looked at least like they were trying against United.

For me he will score but I don't see Swansea running riot on Sunderland.

0-0, 2-2 in this fixture since Swansea reached the PL. You have a point about Sunderland, they were a shambles in the couples of games I saw, against Palace and Pool but with a new manager and the slate wiped clean we may see some more spirit. It's just that Swansea played very well against a good Saints side that tempts me.

And what about Poyet as a manager? Is he any good? I liked him as a player but he seems to drivel on and on as a pundit, quite difficult to understand what he's saying at times. Very often seems to have a bee in his bonnet about something but it's difficult to see exactly what's set him off.

Appreciate some advice on my team for GW8.

    Migs (Lewis)
    Terry Toure Zabaleta
    Ozil Michu Erikson Ramsey
    Sturridge Lukaku Rooney
    (Januzaj BTurner Chester)

Captain..? It would be Lukaku if his minutes are limited tonight, otherwise Ozil, Terry and Michu tempt me.

Also tempted by Erikson -> Oscar for -4 and armband him, but I believe he's still a doubt.

I have fallen out of favour of hits this season, I would take a punt and sub Erikson for Januzaj, and then transfer Erikson to Oscar next week. Captain you have so many options, Michu, Sturridge would be my picks

Team below, have my FT this week but am thinking of saving it.
If I save plan to do Ozil  Walcott the following week and use the extra funds to reinforce defence (namely Collins)
Do you agree? (have WC too but no intention of playing)

    Boruc – MUN a(Marshall)
Wilson (WBA H) Coleman (Hul H) Toure (New A) – Chester (inj) & Collins (oof) on bench
Michu Oscar Ozil Ramsey (barkey on bench)
    Suarez Giroud Sturridge
    £0.4m in the bank

Very nice front 8. Very nice. No improvements there.

Your defence is needing surgery, which will need cash. I agree, Ozil -> Wally or Suarez-> Benteke will allow you to upgrade... Terry, Luiz, Evra or Baines would enhance your backline.

Hi gents...ever asked a question to the community and got the response you didn't want. So stick with the community decision or go with my gut?

    Myhill (Boruc)
Vidic • baines • dawson (wilson burner)
michu • eriksen • ramsey • barkley (brady)
    suarez • giroud • lukaku

    A: Brady >> januzaj on a FT
    B: save FT

    Pros:
    - i think one of my attackers might be rested so wanted a fit bench. Also, one of dawson/wilson may not play
    - i can build TV by 0.4m atleast
    - i think januzaj will play alteast in the next 3 gw's so a short term punt

    Cons:
    - waste of a transfer IF my current 11 play

Presumably you've asked the community because you weren't sure what to do, if you got a fair few replies i would lean towards the collective knowledge of the group but in the end its your team.

With regards to your question you can easily get 11 good players out so I would save the FT, plus it won't be long till Brady is back, if you were going to get rid it should have been a few weeks ago.

Fantasy football scout daily hot topic

Which players do you fear/expect will be rested after their international commitments this week? Does anyone have any examples of managers being more keen to rest players after an international break? Or players that are particularly prone to needing a rest following long flights and international games.

I've been looking at Suarez and he does tend to play even after his long travels so should be safe. I know that Hernandez was pretty much always rested by SAF after his international games (I use him just as an example as Moyes rests him whatever the situation these days).

Exactly my point, Injury risk. The more minutes he plays, more the risk of getting tackled / muscle pull. Very risky strategy of early transfers, if u hv only 1 FT. But dont worry Demi, I was referring to the casual players.

Fair point if he gets injured. I guess that's the risk people take. I'd rather take the risk imo, to get him .3 cheaper in this case. I don't think it's much of an issue though, Lukaku doesn't really have a track record of getting injuries before.

If Lukaku plays tonight, he'll be a big risk. 🙁

Cahill, Lampard, Sturridge (long shot but if he plays 180 mins with his injury record)

Suarez always plays, so he'll be fine.

      Mignolet (harper)
      Walker Coleman Davies Fonte Wilson
      Michu Ozil Eriksen Barkley Amalfitano
      Lukaku Suarez Giroud

      Im thinking this week;
      Davies > Terry
      Eriksen > Hazard/Oscar

      And then next week:
      Ozil> Walcott
      Giroud > Tekkers

No. Last year was midfield power 5. I'm proposing a defense called power 3 based on their increase in bonus points this year and their goal scoring potential.

Yes possibly. A power 4 could become a real proposition if defenders are really making grounds this year. I imagine a discussion like this at FPL towers last year.

"How can we make the game different this year?"

Probably one they have every pre season. Then one of the team suggests

"Let's make defenders score higher so they are a real competitor with mids and forwards. Stop everyone buying cheap solid defenders and expensive mids and forwards"

Hence more bonus points for defenders making the game far more interesting.

Couple that with premium mids not taking control yet means me having a crack at premium defenders as the way forward.

          Just a theory mind.

Agree. Meanwhile RVP will play just as much for United, Rooney even more, and both have a crucial CL game the midweek after, with better replacements for their spots in the league. Yet nobody mentions the possibility of one of them getting rested.

This article should quell any doubts of Lukaku getting managed like he did at West Brom http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/oct/09/roberto-martinez-romelu-lukaku-chelsea-everton?CMP=twt_gu

I went to the Arsenal vs Norwich game last season and we were losing till the last 10 mins or so and came back to win 3-1.

I don't think it will be a smashing as Norwich have a decent defence and not that many injurys. On this basis I may not captain Giroud after all.

Suarez against a dodgy Newcastle defence will be better i think.

        I agree.

        But 2 points to note

1 - This seems a different Arsenal and

2 - Giroud scored one of 3 and got assist for penalty too.

        Make that 3 points:

3 - Norwich did also beat them 1-0 in the return game

He should score but Suarez is probably more of a sure thing

Sky game players - how are you planning on making use of the double captain this week? Aston Villa offer the only credible option who play again on Sat 26th which would of been easy to take advantage of if Benteke was fit.

Will you use transfers to avoid the problem and still gain two captains (ie Capt Spurs player then remove them) or risk bringing in Benteke even if on the Bench in the hope that he gets a cameo then Starts on the 26th?

I don't as I always seem to end up with a captain playing the following Sunday. I've really screwed up my Sky teams this year.
Much the same as last year. I just haven't given the Sky game the time it needed at the start.
