Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Galling

A couple of Frenchman are set for a short stint on the sidelines after falling foul of the referee’s wrath over the weekend’s fixtures. Mathieu Debuchy and Mathieu Flamini received their fifth yellow cards of the campaign, meaning both are set to serve a one-match suspension in Gameweek 12:

Debuchy’s caution in Newcastle’s 1-0 win at White Hart Lane will force him out of the upcoming home game against Norwich as Alan Pardew’s side go in search of a third successive clean sheet. The right-back’s absence is a real blow to the Tyneside team – he has played every minute of the season so far, though the versatile Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa could deputise, allowing fit-again Fabricio Coloccini the chance to slot in alongside Mike Williamson in the heart of the backline.

Flamini has certainly show a flair for racking up the cards since returning to the Emirates this summer. The holding midfielder has received five cautions in just 511 minutes’ game time – his absence for the upcoming visit of Southampton should see Aaron Ramsey shift back into the double-pivot alongside Mikel Arteta, after the Welshman was moved to the right flank once again away to United yesterday.

The Suspension Tightrope welcomed a number of new faces in the Gameweek gone by. West Brom duo Jonas Olsson and Claudio Yacob, Hull’s defensive rock Curtis Davies, Fulham’s Scott Parker, Chelsea right-back Branislav Ivanovic and Norwich’s Michael Turner all climbed aboard on Saturday. Sunday’s matches saw Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere, Spurs centre-half Michael Dawson, City’s Javi Garcia, United utility man Phil Jones, Stoke centre-half Robert Huth, Swansea pair Chico and Angel Rangel and Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko also earn their fourth bookings of the season.

Only four clubs – Liverpool, Cardiff, Palace and Southampton – are not represented in the updated widget on your sidebar, which now heaves under the weight of 23 players.

In terms of ongoing suspensions, Sunderland pair Andreas Dossena and Lee Cattermole will sit out the second of a three-match ban in the upcoming round of matches– both will be available for the Gameweek 14 visit of Chelsea. Swansea stopper Michel Vorm makes a return after serving a one-match ban in Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Stoke.

      Who will be your captain?

Inclined to do A from those choices. At least Mirallas plays some minutes as opposed to Toure.

I'm carrying quite a bit of dead wood

    Chambers, Jenkinson, Brady

but I also want to get rid of Giroud. Looking like a -4 for me this GW.

Brady's played 22 minutes of football in 3 weeks and has Liverpool and Arsenal in his next 3 games that's not a good set of circumstances

      Jenks -> Rat or 4.5m
      Drop Coleman to the bench.
      Play Migs

And then play the rest of your XI like last week. Sorted.

Hobo Shotgun earlier asked if anyone knows how many games were postponed last year due to frozen pitches....

Actually, like you suggested, the pitches arent the issue as they all have under pitch heating, its the roads, and pavements and fans getting to the ground causing apparent 'danger' that leads to matches getting postponed...

Does anyone have any stats on matches being postponed due to weather? is it a major issue or is it just hot air?

The following matches were moved to a different game-week in 2012-13, only one of which was weather-related:
GW2: 1 match (SUN v RDG) unexpectedly postponed (waterlogged pitch).
GW3: 1 match (CHE v RDG) brought forward to GW1 (because of UEFA Super Cup).
GW17: 1 match (CHE v SOU) postponed (because of FIFA Club World Cup).
GW19: 1 match (ARS v WHU) postponed (because of London Underground industrial action).
GW27: 1 match (LIV v SWA) brought forward to GW26 (because of League Cup Final).
GW29: 4 matches (MCI v WIG, WHU v MUN, ARS v EVE, FUL v CHE) postponed (because of FA Cup 6th round).
GW33: 3 matches (WIG v SWA, MCI v WBA, CHE v TOT) postponed (because of FA Cup Semi-finals).

In 2011-12 the following were moved, none of them being weather-related:
GW1: 1 match (TOT v EVE) postponed because of riots.
GW26: 1 match (LIV v EVE) postponed because of Carling Cup Final.
GW29: 1 match (AVL v BOL) postponed because of Muamba heart attack
GW34: 4 matches (BOL v TOT, CHE v NEW, LIV v FUL, STO v EVE) postponed because of FA Cup Semi-Finals.

In 2010-11, however, many matches were postponed because of the weather, including 3 at Blackpool:
GW16: 1 match postponed (BL v MU) because of the freeze.
GW18: All but 3 matches postponed because of the freeze, and most were in doubt until after the GW deadline, so fielding a short team was unavoidable.
GW19: 2 matches postponed (BL v LI & EV v BI) because of the freeze, the latter after the GW deadline.
GW28: 2 matches postponed (CH v BI & TH v AR) because of FA Cup replays. 'Chicarito' and 'Morons FC' (the top two in the world at the time) both played their main wildcard in GW 28, when AR, TH and BI had no matches and a number of players were also either injured or suspended, thus avoiding the need to take a hit in order to field a full team.
GW33: 3 matches postponed (FU v BW, MC v TH & SC v WW) because of FA Cup semi-finals.

    Johnson(eve-hul)
    Dawson(mci-MU)
    Williams(FUL-mci)
    Clyne(ars-che)
