World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Colombia

We kick off our analysis of Group C by taking a look at the South American contenders, Colombia. Jose Pekerman’s side open their campaign against Greece on Saturday June 14 at 5pm, then square up to Ivory Coast five days later at 5pm before a showdown with Japan on Tuesday June 24 at 9pm in the final round of Group C fixtures:

Road to Qualification

Pekerman’s side finished in second spot in the CONMEBOL standings, just two points behind top-of-the-table Argentina. Winning nine and drawing three of their 16 fixtures, Colombia scored 27 times, conceded just 13 – the most impressive defensive record amongst the South American sides – and registered seven clean sheets along the way.

Most Starts David Ospina (16), James Rodriguez (15), Pablo Armero (13), Radamel Falcao, Mario Yepes, Abel Aguilar (12), Luis Perea, Camilo Zuniga (11), Teofilo Gutierrez (10), Carlos Sanchez (9)

Most Goals Radamel Falcao (9), Teofilo Gutierrez (6), James Rodriguez (3)

The Key Targets

In recent friendlies, the South Americans have beaten Belgium and drawn with both Holland and Tunisia, and, given their form, are expected to progress despite the likely absence of top scorer Radamel Falcao. The Monaco frontman – who notched nine times during qualifying – is struggling to recover from a knee injury which will surely dent Colombia’s prospects; if passed fit, he’s available for a hefty 9.6 in FantasyiTeam.

Set to line up in a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, the full-back pairing of Camilo Zuniga and Pablo Armero (4.9 and 5.0 in FantasyiTeam) played a major part in the qualifying campaign. Their pace down the flanks is a key aspect of Colombia’s attack-minded philosophy, though at the heart of defence, veteran centre-halves Mario Yepes and Luis Perea, aged 38 and 35 respectively, could be exposed for lack of mobility in the conditions, thus reducing the chances of clean sheets. The latter two are similarly priced in FantasyiTeam, at 4.8 and 4.9 – Yepes scored twice during qualifying and carries a greater attacking threat.

In central midfield, Carlos Sanchez, Edwin Valencia and Abel Aguilar will battle it out for the double-pivot – providing a much-need energy in the middle of the park, their ball-winning contributions will be smiled upon favourably by the scoring system in the McDonald’s game.

Monaco’s James Rodriguez is the star attraction in the attacking midfield slots. He arrives in excellent form, having produced nine goals and 12 assists for his club in 2013/14 and was handed penalty duties in Falcao’s absence in the recent friendly draw with Tunisia. Rodriguez is nailed-on as a left winger in a 4-2-2-2, though could also be shifted to a central role behind a lone striker if Peckerman opts for a 4-2-3-1. He’s favourably priced in FantasyiTeam, setting you back just 6.5.

If Falcao fails to recover in time, Jackson Martinez (8.4 in FantasyiTeam,) could be tasked with firing the goals up front. Starting only four of the 16 qualifying matches, he’s been a peripheral figure under Pekerman but a superb season at Porto has harvested 20 goals and three assists.

The Long Shots

Another real in-form option, Juan Cuadrado has caught the eye with a series of commanding displays on the flank for Fiorentina. He racked up 11 goals and five assists in Serie A last time around and looks set to line up on the right flank – available for only 5.3 in FantasyiTeam,, he may sneak under the radar with Rodriguez likely to garner more attention in midfield.

Up front, Teofilo Gutierrez was Falcao’s main strike partner during qualification. Playing slightly deeper than the Monaco man, he still managed six goals and with 10 starts to his name during the group stages, he looks assured of continuing in Pekerman’s XI come the kick off – he’s also very kindly priced at just 6.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Colombia looks like a fine place to find cheap differentials - Juan Cuadrado especially.

What other cheap differentials are you looking at in the FantasyiTeam game and hoping are nice and cheap in the McD game?

To add to Wakeys Members stats post here is a list sorted by successful crosses, however it includes corners, free kicks and penalties with the list filtered to exclude players who don't deliver much. On this list you get the key players over the last 6 GWs so essentially the key form players who hopefully will be in that space next season. Slight bias towards teams with DGWs due to it focusing on the end of season GWs.

The real problem is, if they are stupid enough to write it to rules, are they smart enough not to interpret it very differently in the actual game when we've already selected our squads for the whole group stage.

Does anyone have any stats on how many Premier League assists would not be McDonald's assists?

I would imagine quite a few. And I would imagine a lot of the McDonald's "non-assists" would come from midfielders or strikers rather than defenders.

Another reason to go for defensive players?

Looks decent enough to me. I think the transfer policy is a bit too generous - I think you should get a bench and 0 transfers for the group stages, then transfers through the knockouts - but I'm gonna play and see how it goes with £0 invested in additional transfers.

I kinda feel cheated by the whole additional transfers thing though, like any effort I put in would be undermined by players who want to just spend an extra euro or two to beat me.

I think it's a good move on their part - like most popular phone/tablet games, they want to squeeze the cash out of you once you're hooked.

BUT. I think they should have two leagues. One with no prizes and no additional transfers, one with prizes paid for by in app spending. You could all start in the free league but as soon as you put your hand in your pocket, you migrate to the 'big league'.

*Mini leagues would be a complication though.

They'd get their money all the same and people would play on an even keel

+1, although the mini leagues you could just have an option "allow additional transfers in league" or not, players that use extras are ineligible if it's not allowed.

We still haven't managed to replace Okocha and have struggled to get goals from there. Oduamadi started most games in qualifying but he's a bit crap and didn't score once. I have no idea but I wouldn't be surprised to see Mikel start there too.

Personally, I think it's too early in his career to be making this sort of move.

Highly likely he'll be overpaid and underused; two things that can stifle his progress as a developing player.

If he was off to get regular game time in a foreign league, I think that'd be awesome, but he ain't good enough for a side presumably with title ambitions, yet.

I don't know where you're coming from with that "no depth" statement. Monaco has basically 2 starters for each position, usually one young and one experienced. It would be very difficult to break into that Monaco team as a winger, as they most of the time don't play with clear wide players (which might change with the manager though) and when they do, they have already Ocampos, Ferreira-Carrasco and Rodriguez for those places. Of course, he could get some cameos there, but as Ocampos and Ferreira-Carrasco already mostly start on bench, it would be hard to imagine Ince getting starts in that midfield.

Inter, on the other hand, hardly has any competition in wingers, so if they'd play with wingers, there would be good chances there. Only problem is they don't play with wingers, so Ince would have to be able to play in the middle. And then there's competition from Kovacic and Alvarez, even if they'd sell Guarin and Palacio started to fade. So not easy there either.

That said, I'd imagine that it would be beneficial to him to develop outside England.

Perhaps. But training at Inter with the likes of Kovacic and Dickardi, under Mazzarri's instructions would be beneficial - and while I generally think players should try and establish themselves locally first and not go try to get chances abroad, if he could take that challenge and if Mazzarri decided to play with a wide forward occasionally, that would be better to him than playing in Blackpool.

                  Yep true, I agree.

That's a lot of ifs and maybes though, he might just become one of those forgotten about players and Inter might only getting him as he's cheap and has pedigree.. So he might never even make it onto the pitch for them!

Kovacic will be the one to be given the majority of chances through the center and as you said they still have Guarin and Palacio..

I think he should sign for someone mid table with an attacking manager, in any league in Europe, but I don't think he's quite ready for a top-tier team yet (even if its debatable whether Inter are still top-tier, you'd probably still say they are)

Agreed, the massively big IF is playing time. Maybe a smaller club in a Continental league would be the best idea? Usually it works better that way. Youngsters should not haste in these situations, it is essential to make a good choice of team.

In France, I would perhaps think of Bordeaux, or possibly even Lyon who already have a very young team and if Briand leaves they are relying on youngsters only on right flank, and competing against his peers from Lyon's top class youth academy could do very good to him. In Italy, I would much rather look at Sampdoria, or even Fiorentina if they'd lose Cuadrado, in case Ince would take a shift to left flank, because the competition on that flank isn't immense in either club (if Cuadrado leaves)as they both actually use wingers or sort of wide forwards and the competition doesn't seem amazing.

Going to be interesting to see how the Maccy D's scoring system works out with supposed emphasis on defensive players..

        Nice work ENR!
