World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Switzerland

The final team in our Group E analysis is Switzerland. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side open their World Cup campaign against Ecuador on Sunday June 15 at 5pm, then square up to France five days later at 8pm before taking on Honduras in their final group match on Wednesday June 25 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The Swiss served up some impressive showings over the qualifying period. Drawn against Iceland, Slovenia, Norway, Albania and Cyprus, they remained unbeaten throughout, winning seven and drawing three of their 10 matches. Scoring 17 times and conceding on just six occasions (including a 4-4 home draw with Iceland), Hitzfeld’s team registered seven clean sheets and were equally strong both home and away – indeed, 13 of their 24 points arrived on the road, with just a single goal conceded in their five road trips.

Most Starts Steve Von Bergen, Ricardo Rodriguez, Gokhan Inler, Valon Behrami, Xherdan Shaqiri (9), Diego Benaglio, Stephan Lichsteiner, Granit Xhaka (8), Valentin Stocker (6)

Most Goals Fabian Schar (3), Stephan Lichsteiner, Gokhan Inler, Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Mario Gavranovic (2)

Most Assists Granit Xhaka (4), Xherdan Shaqiri (3), Gokhan Inler (2)

The Key Targets

The majority of Hitzfeld’s starting XI looks settled, with eight players starting eight or more of the qualifying matches. In addition, a number of these players won the Under 17 World Cup in 2009 and also reached the final of the European Under 21 Championships in 2011, suggesting they could well be set to spring a surprise. Since clinching qualification, the Swiss have played three friendlies – losing to South Korea and drawing with Croatia before winning 1-0 against Jamaica on Friday evening.

Full-backs Stephan Lichsteiner and Ricardo Rodriguez are both nailed-on down the flanks. The former served up two goals and eight assists for Juventus last season, though is fielded on the right of a five-man midfield, whilst Rodriguez arrives on the back of an outstanding season for Wolfsburg, where he produced five goals and nine assists from the left-back berth. They will set you back 5.5 and 5.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Those two look the best options at the back, where Steve Von Bergen (5.4 in FantasyiTeam) will be partnered by one of Johan Djourou, Philippe Senderos or Fabian Schar. Certainly, the latter’s set-piece ability and eye for goal would be the most beneficial to Fantasy managers – he started three of the last four qualifying matches and notched three times and comes in at 5.1 in FantasyiTeam

In the double-pivot, Napoli duo Gokhan Inler and Valon Behrami will be tasked with protecting the back-four and quickly distributing the ball to the attacking quartet further up the pitch. Available for 5.8 and 5.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam, both may appeal in Fantasy games that reward defensive duties, though Inler, with two goals and a pair of assists during qualifying, has the attacking edge on the former West Ham man.

Playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri will be key for the Swiss. Despite being handed just 10 league starts for Bayern Munich last term, he still netted on six occasions and will certainly be fresh after being used somewhat sparingly by Pep Guardiola – with set-pieces also boosting his appeal, he’s likely to see plenty of investment and sets you back 6.3 in FantasyiTeam. Alternatively, Granit Xhaka could be worth a punt. Priced at 6.2 in FantasyiTeam, he’ll be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker and provided more assists than any team-mate during qualification.

Up top, Josip Drmic is a man in form. Firing 17 goals for relegated Nuremburg last term, he was the Bundesliga’s third top scorer and has already been snapped up by Bayer Leverkusen – available for a very tempting 6.3 in FantasyiTeam, he opened his account for the Swiss with a brace in March’s friendly draw against Croatia and also fired the winner against the Jamaicans a couple of days ago.

The Long Shots

Hertha Berlin’s recent capture, Valentin Stocker, may well be worth considering as an alternative in the attacking midfield roles. A regular on the left flank under Hitzfeld, he arrives in the best form of any of the Swiss midfielders, having produced 13 goals and eight assists for Basel in 2013/14, yet remains very budget-friendly at just 5.7 in FantasyiTeam.

I "won" a Playstation a couple of years back for having the highest match day score in one of the Champions League match days although it was by utter default. I actually finished 7th but the first six said they were from the likes of Japan and the Arctic and excluded themselves from any prizes! 😀

After much searching I think I have found the perfect World Cup game. Its from the Daily Mirror but is exactly like FPL, free to play and 100000% better then that McDonald`s crap where a squad of 23 is needed but you can only play 11 of them!! The Mirror game looks spot on

    http://fantasyfootball.mirror.co.uk/CleverTV/en/mirror/fantasy/27/clienthome.do

    Squad Selection

With Mirror World Cup Fantasy Football you can assemble an all-star squad picking from the best players on the planet.

You may only select one squad for the competition - multiple squads will be deleted. Your squad must consist of:

    2 Goalkeepers
    5 Defenders
    5 Midfielders
    3 Forwards

The number of players you can select from a single team depends on the stage of the competition.
    Stage Players Per Side
    Group stage 3
    Round of 16 4
    Quarter-finals 5
    Semi-finals 6
    Final and Third Place 12
    Budget

Just as real managers have to, you too must manage your budget and work within your means.

Your initial squad value must not exceed £100m. Once the group stage is complete, each team will be given an additional £5m.
    Scoring

Based on their performance, players will be allocated points after each game. Actions occurring in extra time count but penalty shoot-outs do not. Points are awarded as detailed in the table below:
    Action Points
    Playing in a game 1
Playing at least 60 minutes in a game (includes playing points mentioned above) 2
Goal scored by a goalkeeper or defender 6
Goal scored by a midfielder 5
Goal scored by a forward 4
    Assist (defender or goalkeeper) 4
    Assist (midfielder or forward) 3
Defender or Goalkeeper clean sheet (must play at least 60 minutes) 4
Midfielder clean sheet (must play at least 60 minutes) 1
    Earning a penalty 1
    Conceding a penalty -1
    Penalty miss -3
    Penalty save 6
For every goal conceded by a goalkeeper or defender -1
    Yellow card -2
Red card (includes any yellow card deduction) -5
    Own Goal -2

Mirror Fantasy Football will not enter into any correspondence relating to the allocation of points to players. We accept no responsibility for the accuracy of this data.

    Assists

A player will be credited with a 'goal assist' when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.). In addition an attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal. When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker. Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored. No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick. No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

    Deadlines

The matchday deadline is the first scheduled kick-off of that matchday.

Any transfers, captain changes or substitutions made after the deadline will become active at the next deadline.

Teams entered after the matchday deadline can still score points for that matchday. Players will only score points for that matchday if they play after the entry was made.

Any selected players who have already played in the matchday when the entry was made will not score points for that matchday, and will not be eligible for automatic substitutions. All players will score points as normal in the following matchdays.
    Substitutions

Use the 'My Team' page to select eleven players to form your team for the next matchday. Your formation will automatically change based on the players you have chosen.

    Automatic substitutions

Automatic substitutions will take place at the end of the matchday, when all matches have been played. If your goalkeeper plays no part in the matchday, then the computer will substitute the player for your replacement goalkeeper, if they played in the matchday.

If any of your outfield players play no part in the matchday, then the computer will try to substitute the inactive player for one of your replacements. This is done by replacing them with your highest priority substitute who actually played in the matchday. You can change your substitution priorities on the 'My Team' page. Automatic-substitutions will only bring in a player if he fits into one of the permitted formations.
    Captains

You must nominate a member of your team to be captain. This player will score double the number of points they would usually have been awarded that matchday.

If your captain does not play then the bonus will be lost. Another player will not take over the captaincy in their place.
    Transfers

Use the transfers page to change your squad for the next matchday. The number of transfers which can be made are as follows:
    Matchday Transfers
    Matchday 1 Unlimited
    Matchday 2 3
    Matchday 3 3
    Round of 16 Unlimited
    Quarter-Finals 6
    Semi-Finals 6
    Final and Third Place 6

If you do not use your full allocation of transfers for a single Matchday, then unused transfers are not carried over to the following matchday.

      Ticas (ladies) and Ticos ([gentle]men),

As Captain of 'La Sele', it is with the utmost pride and sincerity that I present this opportunity to the wonderful people of the forum, to play titanic roles in this summer's UEFA World Cup, and to cast legendary shadows over the annals of fantasy history.

Costa Rica is now open to applications from the users of Fantasy Football Scout for the four remaining UEFA World Cup roles, including that of the highly prestigious Vice-Captain 😎

I can assure you that our presence in Brazil will bring you happiness exceeded only in the hearts and souls of fans of free flowing, pimp-esque technique - for whom we bear the torch - but also the chance to forge lasting friendships in an unforgettable journey to against-the-odds glory. The road to victory will be rocky, for we have only the smallest of wheels on our wagon, but with hearts of lions our engines roar loudest and we are here to make our mark.

A mountainous journey, indeed, but it begins with a single step. To those of you already pulsating with heroism I say strap yourselves into the furriest of loincloths and don your finest scowl. Step forwards and register your interest by emailing r.fairbrass1@gmail.com. Your bravery will drive us on to glory.

To those who's interests have been piqued but require further persuasion, allow me to share some insight into what it is to be a part of this exuberant nation, for your measured philosophy will make a welcome accent to our feisty approach.

      - Costa Rica, known for its progressive environmental policies, is the only country in the world to meet all five criteria established to measure environmental sustainability.
      - With just 51,100 square kilometres of land, we boast an enormous 1,287.5 kilometres of coastline *making bikini-thongs essential wear for the peach-assed ticas roaming the country.
      - Perhaps in consequence, the New Economics Foundation (NEF) ranked Costa Rica 1st in its Happy Planet Index in both 2009 and 2012.

      - The national team is the most successful of the central Americas, reaching four World Cups and reigning as champions of the CONCACAF on three occasions.
      - Having began life as a footballing nation with the 7-0 obliteration of El Salvador in the Independence Centenary Games back in 1921, going on to win the title, Costa Rica's early promise as a footballing nation faltered *due to the inevitable excesses of phenomenal women and celebratory narcotics. However, since the 1990's, La Sele have been rising from their own spliff-induced ashes like a mighty phoenix on the path to Rio-Redemption, qualifying for four finals since Italia '90.

And to the mavericks among you, for whom commitment and team-play holds no place in your heart, your ice-cold, Cantona-collared-arrogance may make all the difference in our fiercest battles. Witness the fitness of Paolo Wanchope and be inspired: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrLJGAFDOXQ (I so wish i made this tribute myself!)

*style choices of 'peach-assed ticas' and the percentage of the population for which they are accredited, and recreational drug use among elite athletes in Costa Rica remain undocumented phenomena and thus, these statements may be based on inaccurate or unproven assumptions.

32 teams, 5 in each team. Each team goes head to head against the teams in their group. The scoring is based on your Macdonalds fantasy score for that gameweek. The team that wins three or more head to heads in that gameweek gets 3 points. Top 2 in each group progress to the knockouts. Check the thread unger articles for more info 🙂

basically, you will be applying to be a part of a 5 man squad representing one of the nations at the World Cup.

Each team has a captain who will be responsible for arranging the 5 members into a "formation" which effectively determines who your head to head opponents will be (by position)

Teams are paired up and play against each other in the groups, and then we go into a knockout tree like the real thing.

I am Costa Rica captain, and you'll see (in the main article) that there are many others here looking for team-members.

Pick a team, approach the captain for a spot. Get involved!

Anyway, I've got a mate who is starting a football blog. It sounds good but he's lacking a name. He's aiming for in-depth look at the premier league, looking at some of the big issues, along with some neat original features. Have any of you got any ideas for what you'd like to see? Any name ideas?

He's keen to find out what real fans look for in a website and I said I'd ask around here as you guys are avid fans with proper football brains.

            Hey Lucy,

sorry to hear of your loss. I am sure you will arrive at the right phd selection in good time.

            If i were to list the top features of an article that i would like to read, they'd be;
            - detailed analysis; stat-based features (individual involvement/role) and tactical deconstruction (team set-up/formation)
            - interviews or player/manager features.

            If i were to list the things that i think would drive the most traffic to the site, however, they'd be;
            - Gossip roundups/speculative opinions - transfer talk etc
            - reputable team predictions/lineups and approach

As for names for the site, that has to be personal IMO. He'll have a moment of clarity, just get him pissed up.

On another note, fancy joining the Costa Rican World Cup Party-Bus? (see above)
