Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 6, Day 1

The World Cup returns to our screens once again this evening, after Holland’s dramatic spot-kick win over Costa Rica on Saturday night brought the quarter-finals to a conclusion. This time around, hosts Brazil have it all to do against Germany – with Thiago Silva suspended at the heart of defence and Neymar sidelined due to a back injury, Big Phil Scolari doesn’t have his problems to seek:

Brazil: Cesar; Maicon, Luiz, Dante, Marcelo; Fernandinho, Gustavo; Hulk, Oscar, Bernard; Fred

Germany: Neuer; Lahm, Hummels, Boateng, Hoewedes; Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Kroos; Muller, Klose, Ozil

Scolari makes three changes from the side that narrowly beat Colombia in the quarter-finals. Bayern Munich’s Dante replaces the suspended Silva at centre-half, Luiz Gustavo returns from a one-match ban to take the place of Paulinho in the centre of the park, whilst Shakhtar Donetsk wide man Bernard gets the nod in the attacking midfield three.

The Brazil boss keeps faith with the misfiring Fred, then, despite a return of one goal from the opening five matches, whilst Oscar will be looking to improve upon his recent displays – after a goal and assist in the tournament opener against Croatian, he’s mustered just a single assist in the subsequent four fixtures. David Luiz has been subject to heavy Fantasy interest right across the games after producing two goals and an assist in his last three appearances – as we saw in the win over Jose Pekerman’s side, his set-piece duties could be key if the hosts are to prevail.

For the Germans, Joachim Low continues with the XI that started last week’s 1-0 win over France. Per Mertesacker remains on the bench, then, with Philip Lahm at right-back again and Jerome Boateng partnering Mats Hummels at centre-half, whilst Miroslav Klose is handed the lone forward role.

Top scorer Thomas Muller is looking to end a two-game drought – having scored four times in the group stages, the Bayern man has delivered back-to-back blanks against Algeria and France but will fancy his chances against a backline with one clean sheet in five matches. At the back, Mats Hummels’ second goal of the tournament got the better of the French last weekend and with three clean sheets to his name over four appearances, the Dortmund centre-half has picked up plenty of new Fantasy owners ahead of this evening’s crunch encounter.

Mats Hummels on the knee injury - 'an irritation of a tendon in the hollow of the knee' - that required him to substitute himself off at half-time tonight:

"I don't just have a few problems with the knee, but a few *more* problems with the knee. We'll find out tomorrow what it is exactly.

"There are no 'horror diagnoses' at the moment, but instead good reason to hope that it will be functioning again in five days time.

"But it will certainly have to be treated intensively. I will have to perform the exercises well that I'm able to do and have to do, so that it (= the knee) is functioning again by Saturday at the latest.

"If I'm not able to train on Saturday, then I wouldn't be so presumptuous to say that I can play on Sunday."

          Million dollar question.

But we've got able replacements in Dzeko and Negredo which other teams don't have. Last season Aguero was injured for the large part of the season and we still won the league.

My issue is that I've been following his career since the very start and it has always been the same. And yes he is fine talent to develop, absolutely, but I will remain firm on my point that he was no great buy. He was not a bad buy either. He was a purchase that has had a lot of ups and a lot of downs and until that's ironed out of him he won't be a great buy for me!

Still got a Suarez pic too... 😆

But on a serious note, that thing about United and LVG was very bitter after complaining about other people's bitterness here. Then you say Lambert is a bargain, he's 32 and a target man, is he really what Brendan wanted?

Coutinho is definitely not quality when he's this wasteful, that's just having the blinkers on.

Brendan also probably didn't have a clue what an Origi was until he saw 5 minutes of him at the World Cup and started bidding millions on him...

What? Where did i complain about anyone being bitter? And i'm not having a dig at utd. They are a shambles atm. Lambert is good backup to sturridge this season. Coutinho is quality. And wasteful and improving all the time. Suarez is a legend. That last paragraph is laughable

markovic is 20mil, Can 9mil, Lallana 16.5mil taking away the 4mil bournemouth got, lovren will be under 20mil, origi is 6 mil rising to 9 and getting loaned back.

All that is 70 mil the budget pool had before anything this summer they had 15mil in jan not used and earned the most in tv revenue this past season thats all before even getting into Suarez fee they're going to get and others they going to release, I don't think they'll spend it all but there will be another 2-3 signing for sure that will come in.

Because my understanding is that over the 11/12 and 12/13 season they made a total loss of approximately £104.5 million. Would like to know how they cleared that.

They only investigate grand in Europe at the moment and everything I have read has nothing to do with this debt being cleared. It'll be fine if they absorb some Suarez money or at least they might get away with it but I've not seen any reports showing the debt cleared.

Markovic is 20 and has all the makings of a superstar. Lambert was a bargain, origi is cheap and will probably be loaned back another for the future. Lallana was overpriced but we know exactly what quality he'll bring. Can is another for the future and could prove a bargain for 10 mil. Loving the transfer policy tbh. BR building something special

We need to be a little realistic here. Markovic has ability but he isn't anywhere close to having the makings of a superstar yet. Pool shouldn't be sspending on players like Origi until they have their playing squad sorted out. Lambert and Lallana are good signings. Can, having watched him a good deal, is nothing special. They need a big signing.

yes he does just because most haven't seen him play, the guy is top 20 young player right now. Chelsea had first dibs on him, them not taking him doesn't mean much since they're stacked in that position.

Origi was scouted before world cup they're doing the same thing chelsea do and that not to miss out on him now since wc would have attracted alot of other clubs to his potential

Agree on the rest and they'll spend for sure, they aren't stupid they'll know pool supporters will be pissed if they don't get atleast one big name

Not saying anything about Chelsea rejecting him, wouldn't consider that much but he has a long way to go, remember that the Portuguese leagues aren't quite as demanding as the PL.

As for Origi, I'm not saying he's a bad signing but the question is what do Pool need right now to consolidate 4th place, is it a player out on loan? It's their choice, if it meant having an extra £10 million to use for signing a bigger starting 11 player then I would think that the most prudent move but that's just my thinking.

I do hope a big name comes in, I thought Sanchez was going to be it but now that that has slipped I'm intrigued about who they'll target.

I know I'm just saying they weren't the only ones that have had interest in him, ofcourse the league isn't great but matic has had great opinion on him aswell as grant former chelsea coach. ronaldo didn't exactly take epl by storm but 3-4 season later he killed it.

think they have too much money as it is and don't need the extra 10. Chelsea have done similar why can't Pool and stock up in talent if they can while continue to improve their squad

personally I think they throw money at cavani, It hasn't been mentioned anywhere but I think hes obtainable and seemed quite unhappy past season

Pool will try to get establish players but it's hard ask utd, unless you have city money where you pay double wages or suddenly utd and pool move to london or win the title they will struggle to get them before City,Chelsea an arsenal if they're willing to spend

really if Chelsea signed lallana I would be raging. decent player that had a good season. Not a world class player. Lovern ain't worth the money quoted. Origi very ordinary. Can didn't make the grade at Bayern was sold on the cheap to Leverkusen with an option to buy back that they didn't take up so he can't be much good.
Decent squad players but nothing that will get Liverpool near the title again.

lallana is for depth and English apart from utd the other teams will struggle to find English players in a yr or 2. lovren is worth about 15mil they get him close to 18 in the end, Origi is a talent potential wise you have zero reason to say he's ordinary when he's outplayed your lukaku. Can didn't make the grade... really thats why bayern are pissed pool got him ? Buyback only comes in next yr thats why.

last season was as good as it gets for liverpool... everything was in place for them to end their 24 year wait for a league title last season and they bottled it spectacularly... their best and only genuine world class talent cant wait to jump ship and they have to fight at the highest level on 2 fronts now with champions league.. they can spend what they want.. they missed the boat last year.. and after one successful title challenge in 20 odd years that they blew it may be time for their fans to get off the high horse.. leave the title challenges to the big boys who have been there and done it

no bother mate.. i wouldnt entertain a discussion with a chelski fan theres only so much they can talk about in their entire ten year history to be honest... just took exception to your comment above about united being a shambles.. admittedly last season was but its one year.. we have a genuine world class coaching staff in place and quite a bit of financial muscle as always to throw at strengthening where we need to.. we will be there or there abouts again mate make no mistake about it..

well that was mental- i genuinely havn't seen anything like that in a game of that level since ive been watching football.
on a side note, david luiz's blatent atempt to just boot the player and not the ball was horible, and in my eyes just as worthy of a lengthy ban as what suarez did, if not more so.
had much more chance of actually injuring someone.

Anyone else find Arsenal fans on twitter very annoying, bitter and a bit deluded?

That being said, Arsenal fans on this website, and here (I live in London), are a great bunch! Maybe Twitter isn't the place for me, I'm not sure.

United has the perfect start though: SWA(H), Sun, BUR, QPR, Lei, WHU, EVE, Wba, CHE (October 25th).

      A dream run for LVG.

Mc Ds game has been fun but can't wait for FPL to open. Any guesses at when it opens?

With Arsenal signing Sanchez hard to see them signing a top striker now. Ground best option FPL wise

True but akways thought of him as a Mid but we defo dont need another mid interesting to see what FPL class him as. Really excited for Arsenal this season

Arsenal could very well gain 18 million more loyal followers if that happens 😉

Swapped armband from Hummels to Schneider. Thinking he's so pissed off hitting the woodwork twice v Ricans that he'll find his range v Argentina.
