Scout Report – Graziano Pelle

Ronald Koeman moved into the transfer for the second time last week by acquiring striker Graziano Pelle from former club Feyenoord on a three-year contract. The 28-year-old teams up with the Dutchman for the third time in his career, having also worked under his guidance at AZ Alkmaar, and his arrival hands the Saints a very prolific replacement for the departed Rickie Lambert:

Discussing his move with the club’s official site, Pelle admitted he didn’t need persuading to join the Koeman revolution for the season ahead:

“I had some teams interested in me, but this is going to be the best choice for me because the club wants to keep improving every year. The talks between us were only short in terms of how long it took to convince each other. I was pretty sure that, for me, this would be a great step. [Ronald] Koeman and I worked together for two amazing years at Feyenoord, and I hope that it will be the same here.”

The History

A product of the Lecce youth system, the Italian made his debut in back in January 2004. Pelle was unable to make any impact, though, and managed just 12 goalless appearances over three years at the club – loaned out to lower league Catania on three occasions over that period, he notched 16 times in 69 appearances.

In July 2007, Pelle left his native country to sign for Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. Spending four years in the Eredivisie, he struggled to make any real impact and netted only 14 times in 78 league outings before moving back to Italy with Parma. His toils continued, with a single goal in 12 appearances prompting loan stints at Sampdoria (four goals in 16 league games) and a first year under Koeman at Feyenoord, where he served up an excellent 29 goals and nine assists in 33 matches over 2012/13.

Midway through that loan spell with Feyenoord, Pelle signed a four-year deal with the Dutch outfit and officially joined on a permanent deal in the summer of 2013. Once again, he served up the goals for Koeman’s side, with 26 goals and six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions – indeed, over his two years with Feyenoord, an average of 0.88 goals per game was third around Europe, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo more prolific.

The Prospects

Earlier in the summer, the doubters were circling after Southampton lost their former manager and three key players but Koeman’s knowledge of the Dutch top-flight has quickly pacified Saints fans and Fantasy managers alike.

The acquisition of playmaker Dusan Tadic (16 goals and 14 assists last season) in addition to Pelle certainly suggests that Koeman has added real quality to the squad and more than atoned for the departure of Lallana and Lambert. Discussing his new forward with the club’s official website, the Dutchman summed up Pelle’s best qualities:

“I had Graziano in my team for my last two years at Feyenoord. He scored a lot of goals – more than 50 in two seasons – and they brought a lot of points to the club. Goals mean points, and we needed a good player in that position after Rickie Lambert left. In terms of his qualities, he’s a tall striker with a lot of movement and he’s fast. He’s a player who gives confidence to the team because he keeps the ball, and he’s very dangerous in front of goal. He’s almost 29 years old, so he brings a little bit of experience to a young team.”

Although the rebuilding is coming along nicely, the Saints new boys may need time to acclimatise to their new environment. Luckily, the transition has been made easier by a superb opening schedule which many may find hard to resist as we start to assemble our squads for the season ahead. Koeman’s side face just two of last term’s top eight in their opening 12 fixtures, with their first six home games seeing West Brom, Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester all make their way to St Mary’s.

Coming in at just 7.5 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game, Pelle has been reasonably priced for the campaign ahead. An eighth place finish last time around under Mauricio Pochettino – albeit impressive – ensures the club have no European fixtures to contend with, making rotation unnecessary and first-team starts assured. Furthermore, Lambert’s departure should ensure the Italian is handed spot-kicks and if he can even come close to replicating his previous displays under Koeman, that opening run of matches has the potential to richly reward those willing to invest.

    2nd draft:

    Krul Mannone
    Cahill Cameron Chester Chambers Duff
    Hazard Sanchez Arnautovic Snodgrass Albrighton
    RVP Dzeko Bony

I have tried to maximize my captaincy options...
Defence is one area where I like to spend less at the beginning because building team value is of top priority..

    Thoughts?

    2 questions for y'all:

    1) Why not much love for Phil Jones? He's a quality player (I am a Man Utd fan so possible blinkers here) and with LVG's propensity to give youth a chance plus Utd's fixtures he was the first DF in my team at a mere 5.5. Obviously should a top class CB get purchased soon then things will change.... but at the moment my money is on Jones & Evans as our CB pairing with Smalls as back-up. And of those 3 I'd put Jones comfortably as the number one choice.

    2) Why do some posters set up a team for 3 or 4 GWs and plan to Wildcard at that point?
Seems like complete insanity to me. WC should be savoured for DGWs or when you are really up sh1t creek without a paddle through injury or just plain terrible picks. We only get one per season that you can use at any time.......don't waste it guys!

      1) I'm not convinced by Man U defence, he doesn't have too much goal threat, and he has a propensity for throwing himself into danger, resulting in injury.

      2) Because every season it falls apart by Gw3! 😉

I always WC early. after 4 gw's is best because you've had a good look at the teams and the transfer window is shut. allows you to get all the form players and build TV really quickly.

Unless you happen to choose all the best players to start with, you'll most likely be missing at least 4/5 of the ones you would prefer to have and are going up quickly in value.

Interesting point about the value thing. But I must admit I've never had a problem building team value throughout the season, just getting on a few bandwagons and taking the odd hit here and there.

WCing for value seems a little drastic.

Then start of the season when teams are all likely to be very different. And it's the time of year where we will be finding out about who the players to have are. So using your WC early will help with this. Later in th season teams will be similar with or without wildcards.

It's not something I want to do, but it makes sense.

      1) In the main - injury prone. A good option if he can stay fit, though I prefer Rafael. Many like Shaw or DDG instead.

      2) In terms of logic I agree, its not the best idea to plan to use your wildcard. But funnily enough, thinking like this may mean you get off to a great start and decide to not use it, already having all the players everyone else is clamoring for

      1. Jones was pushed out of the defence already last year, and now that manU has to many midfielders already and is still looking for a top class DM, and are probably going to buy a new starting CB, Jones might well find himself on bench.

      2. It's because it allows you to get all the early bandwagons. If they work out well, you will not only win a big lead in the beginning, but also will have a lot more money to use on players in January, when there's a new wildcard. A late wildcard might help you very little if your team value is low, because the good players will have got crazy prices by the time you use the wildcard.

      1) I have him in my team but you have to admit, Jones and Evans don't come across as two of the best centre backs in the world.

      2) I normally wildcard 4-6 weeks in, you have an idea of who the nailed on players are, there is a lot of transfer activity as there are more teams active so you can increase value quickly and they've given us another wildcard to use later anyway. It's not a waste, just a different tactic.

      2) "The best laid schemes of mice and men..."
People are just being realistic in regards to just how wrong we are with all this preseason speculation.
An early WC gives you a quick lead in a game where we have a finite amount of time to score pts(obv) but, more importantly allows you to build team value which is a very under rated key (imo) to success in this game.

        Fair enough on point 2.

I do think though that TV can be built quite effectively through early trannies with the odd hit thrown in here or there too. So is it really woth losing a WC over?

Anyway, I'm planning for the long haul and if it all goes tits up early on then obviously I'll be hitting my WC

Oh, no one who's season is going wel is going to WC for the sake of WC.

Its just one WC strategy is to line up a team for the first 3/4 weeks - right around the first international break so they can maximise flipping players - and then hop on all the early bandwagons.

I don't advocate for this strat but, do understand the underlying merits.

Yes definitely. It makes sense if you think about it as the cb often has to cover behind the fb so they need to be able to tackle and pass with the left foot if they are playing left sided cb.

There should be at least one 5m spurs option though alright. I do fear pochetino will be a rotating nightmare when he has a squad like spurs do. He was bad enough at Southampton and they had no squad.

Yes there are but not by choice. As you say 50% of cb's are not left footed so the weaker teams usually have to make do with someone adequate on their left side playing left side cb. It is not ideal though

This is one of those odd things. Somehow it is never considered to be a problem when there are two right footers, but once there are two lefties, everybody is sure there can be no balance. Same in attack, everybody kept on pointing out the number of lefties in Arsenal attack, while many teams have 0-1 left footed players in their attacking 4-6 players.

There are not enough top left footed cb's to go around so right footed guys adequate on their left play there.

Most left footers are actually pretty good on their right too so it might not be much of a problem for them. I guess we'll see soon enough

There is a 29.8m clause on Reus contract that will increase to 45m in Jan 2015.

I think it is highly unlikely but not 0% as you stated earlier.

I can say because I've already read his exact words.

"I can definitely say that I will play for Dortmund next season," he is quoted as telling Kicker. "I don't have to keep stressing how well I feel here.

"After playing 10 years in the youth here I had to go a step back via Ahlen and Monchengladbach to make two steps forward.

"Now I am back in Dortmund and – again – I feel totally well here and have a contract until 2017."

0%, irrespective of the release clause the value of which has only ever been speculated. Think of it like this, if Marco Reus is going for 30 million why are people not killing each other to sign him? Added to that he's already said he'll be a Dortmund player next season.

As for Isco, I've heard nothing on that so I can neither agree or disagree with you.

Sorry Roy 🙁 Genuinely I would like to see your boys getting a really top notch talent because a) it would rekindle my appeal in Pool going all out attack this season and therefore make Sturridge more appealing to me in FPL and more importantly b) I do believe them to be a massive club that really should be in the top 4 most years. Would rather Pool there than Chelsea.

Yeah, it's critical they get one "marquee" signed. Look at the difference the Ozil signing made to Arsenal fans mentality and whole squad was lifted after a bad start.

I agree with you. It's a tough region to be in really, there's no consistent CL to offer big players yet (that would come after 2 or 3 seasons finishing in the top 4 and losing Suarez, while increasing funds, possibly dents appeal to those looking at Pool as a possible club to join.

It's conversely why United are still okay at the moment as they've not gone consistently without CL, just one season. If they miss out this season and the following season, big trouble lies ahead. But I agree, it's very important especially for the younger guys like Sterling to get a big player that can boost them like Suarez did.

😆 If you can get Pogba, Vidal, Reus and Benzema to Liverpool with £75M combined, you deserve a title just for that.

Liverpool team is starting to look pretty good:

Mignolet (or Courtois, they might fit him to that £75M too)
        GJ-Skrtel-Sakho-Enrique
        Vidal-Pogba
        Lallana
        Benzema-Sturridge-Reus

Bit top heavy, should invest some more on defence.

5 playing mids but only one premium?
      Matic won't get many points.
      Naismith won't play.
Probably too much money tied up in defence.

Lads, there are 3 players I'm flirting with getting into my team:

    - Tadic
    - de Jong
    - Shelvey

Now all these 3 have difficult first GW fixtures. So, I'm considering getting Mirallas in (7.5) for the first game vs Leicester, and then shipping out for one of the above, after watching each game and critically analysing them, as all three players have great runs from GW 2 onwards.

I know this comes under 'Planning my first transfer' which a no-no for some players. But what do you think of the preliminary plan?

It's a decent plan, but you may struggle to properly evaluate a player if their team has so little play. De Jong may be great this season, but I can't see him showing anything against Man city for example.

I personally wouldn't plan a GW1 transfer, but each to their own.

My advice would be pick a team you are happy with for the first 5/6 gws as you will be free to bring in the bargain bandwagons that always appear in the first few gws.

Top tip: don't plan transfers for first 5/6 gws

Interesting choice. Wouldn't go there unless they had a great run of fixtures, which they don't.

Go down in price a bit to 5.0-6.0 range or pray Bony leaves then we have Gomis @ 7.0

Wrote about / researched this earlier.

Outside of putting the ball in the net Carroll has been one of the most threatening attackers over the past cpl years.

His issues is his conversion rate... A paltry 4% last year.

If he got that up into the 'normal' 10/15% range then he would have nabbed 8 goals in his 15 games last year.

Extrapolated that over 30 games & you'd have a 15 goal man for £7mil, not too shabby.

      IF, IF, IF...

True we laugh about it now but back then it seems like a bargain.
Young star in Serie A and La Liga's most consistent striker.

I don't feel any excitement with Liverpool's current signing.
Lambert is old, Lallana is okay but way overpriced,
Markovic honestly never heard of him, and Emre is okay since he's young but Paulinho seems better

        Lambert better than Soldado
Lallana and Eriksen is a tough one, possibly a tie.
Markovic vs Lamela, both really unknown in England, once again a tie I feel.
Paulinho is currently better than Can although how Can will do in PL once more is unknown.

Mixed bag really, probably hinges on how Lamela, Markovic and Can perform.

Eriksen shits all over Lallana. Lallana has one good season and everyone gets excited.
+ Eriksen is still only 22 whilst Lallana is 26.

Lamela is better then Markovic at the moment as he proved with his goals in Serie A.
I like Markovic though and he is only 20, similar with Can they both have potential to be future stars.

Well steady on now. Eriksen is good, and yes he's younger but going on current PL ability I don't think Eriksen is better. Not to say he won't be if the team gets itself together properly, same goes for Lamela who I believe to be better than Markovic as well but how either will adjust to PL (lets face it, Lamela barely got a chance to adjust) is an entirely different story.

              (LM & NOT CAM).

Yea I agree on Lamela, the way he was managed last season was a joke. Thankfully everything has been good going into this season.

Lambert is better than Loldado, and has experience in PL, and was waaaay cheaper. That alone makes it look better for Liverpool.

But with the rest of it, you may actually be right. Spurs did buy some players with unquestionable merits. Just that they screwed everything up, and one of their better buys got injured in his 2nd match, doesn't mean those players are bad. Lamela is still a very promising player, no matter what happened last season.

I'm pretty settled on my team structure, players may change a bit depending on who looks nailed. I see a lot going with a cheap 5th mid as usual, namely Albrighton. There are a good range of cheap strikers 5.0-5.5 and atm I'm happy with one of these as my cheapie. The lack of good mid-priced strikers compared to midfielders makes this pretty appealing this year

Dzeko would be a nice solution to the mid-priced striker but even if nailed on, I don't trust him in the big games, which they have a fair few of early doors (plus I may start with Aguero).

Gomis would be ideal if Bony leaves

RvP, Costa, Dzeko/Bony up top but I'm 0.1 short if Costa is 10.5 (have Rooney as a filler as I thought that's what he'd come in at)

Sanchez, Eriksen, Arnie, Siggy, Wanyama is my current midfield.

Also, on the Spurs defence, Kaboul could be an option if picked over Dawson and Vlad.
